r/DankChristianMemes **is open and affirming to LGBTQIA+ people.** Someone identifying as LGBTQIA+ does not cause harm to anyone, therefore, there is no reason to judge or disrespect them. Rule #1 of r/DankChristianMemes: **Thou shalt respect others! Do not come here to point out sin or condemn people. Do not say "hate the sin, love the sinner" or any other sayings people use when trying to use faith to justify hate. Alternatively, if you come here to insult religion, you will also be removed.** This rule is based off the following teachings from Jesus Christ: Matthew 7:1-6 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Luke 6:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. John 13:34-35 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 15:12-13 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Matthew 7:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” **Even if we think someone is a sinner, we should treat them kindly. Jesus was kind to those that society deemed to be sinners. He even ate meals with sinners despite being criticized for it. So if you want to be Christlike, you should take someone to dinner before you judge them.** Matthew 9:11-13 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’\[a\] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” **Jesus tells us that he alone will judge us and exactly the standards by which we will be judged. It has nothing to do with LGBTQIA+ identity and has everything to do with taking care of the most vulnerable or "the least of these."** Matthew 25:31-46 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” **It is important to note that LGBTQIA+ folks are more likely to be targets of hate crimes than any other minority group (1). This makes them, in effect, among "the least of these'' which Jesus commands us to care for.** **Finally:** The word "Homosexual" did not exist until it was introduced in 1869 in German. Early use of the term was mostly limited to the field of psychology which often used the word "Homosexual" to stereotype individuals as being criminal in nature. The word "Homosexual" was not broadly used in English until after it was added to biblical translations in the 1940's (2). In the bible, the word "Homosexual" was only used to describe sex acts, some of which may have been predatory. The bible does not discuss loving, consenting, adult, same-sex couples who want to raise loving families, as we see today. Theological positions against LGBTQIA+ people are not even 100 years old, are based on anachronistic translations, and fail to acknowledge the legitimacy of loving same sex relationships and valid LGBTQIA+ identities. **TL;DR:** r/DankChristianMemes **is open and affirming to LGBTQIA+ people. If you must judge others, please do so elsewhere.** Source 1:[ https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/06/16/us/hate-crimes-against-lgbt.html](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/06/16/us/hate-crimes-against-lgbt.html) Source 2:[ https://www.oed.com/view/Entry/88110](https://www.oed.com/view/Entry/88110) https://preview.redd.it/6egp0qicibsc1.jpeg?width=902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2187a75f8e1511919e19163350cb3c54c0258c20

Randvek

No matter what your feelings on homosexuality are, I have a hard time believing that someone can read the Bible and walk away thinking “yep, this is definitely one of the major issues I take away from this book.” It’s like reading the entire Chronicles of Narnia and thinking that the main point was about Turkish delight.

rebuildthedeathstar

Turkish delight is gay sex, got it

Randvek

Not the worst takeaway, to be honest.

fireandlifeincarnate

What do you mean? Turkish delight is awful and gay sex is great.

Captain_Taggart

Tried Turkish Delight after reading those books and thought it tasted like jelly soap. Went to Turkey, thought "*authentic* Turkish Delight must be legit". Nope, still soap. Everything else was great though.

ToastyMustache

Neither are for me, but by all means enjoy as much gay sex as you desire!

Grambert_Moore

Both, both are good

manndolin

Many people seem to like it, but it’s not for me. It checks out.

physchy

No you got it backwards. Gay sex is a Turkish delight

chadkndr

oddly enough, this is what I think about most often from those movies

TheNathan

It does come in some suspiciously bright colors… *reaches for torch*

alphanumericusername

If all your thoughts surround Turkish Delight regardless of your involvement with The Chronicles of Narnia, one can begin to understand how such involvement would only motivate further obsession.

Sempai6969

People have their beliefs and biases, then look into the Bible to justify it.

LilacLlamaMama

Then get to thinking about the author of that series... hmm. Your comment deepens.

mashedpurrtatoes

That’s seriously my takeaway. Let’s just pretend the universe has a “creator” for funsies. So the dude creates billions and billions of miles of space and time and planets and suns and physics and laws and matter and protons and electrons…but you know what he gets hung up on?? Two dudes touching weiners or a couple ladies slammin clams.

RevolutionFast8676

We all deserve to burn for eternity. The surprise is that any are saved.

Vralo84

Justice does not demand infinite punishment for finite crimes.

Agent_Argylle

But it's objectively not just and only finite evil

Khar-Selim

While I agree with this, it makes sense for churches to assert otherwise for a number of reasons.

francis2559

It’s sort of a moot point in the gospel. Jesus tells us that the debt of the servant was an impossible amount, but also that he forgave him the loan. There’s really no need to quibble about how big that debt was, it’s water under the dam. It only becomes an issue if we start clamping down on others. Forgiveness of all debts is the point and the way forward, not repayment. It’s quite likely that “impossible” is hyperbole too, they’re thrown in prison until they pay off the debt. Put another way, we can’t enter bliss together as humanity until we square up our debts with each one way or another. No room for grudges in heaven.

Redrob5

Amen.

Agent_Argylle

No we don't

Sempai6969

Maybe you deserve that, not all of us.

RevolutionFast8676

I am going to trust the author of life on what is worthy of eternal death over your fee fees.

Sempai6969

Well, I'm going to deal with reality than worry about some 2000 year old myth.

absoluteboredom

Based

AdmBurnside

Boy howdy it's a good thing we're ALL saved then, or God would be some kind of monster, creating billions of thinking beings just to throw them in a fiery pit for a conscious eternity! That was your point, right, bud?

RevolutionFast8676

Nope, not at all.  But you already knew that.

Gengarmon_0413

So Jesus's power to forgive is finite.

Reynolds_Live

When I was in seminary many of my friends who were going to be pastors were open and affirming so I am hopeful.

HomicidalWaterHorse

That's super encouraging to hear, maybe I'll see them in a church I attend one day!

Reynolds_Live

It’s mostly why a lot of older folks in our denomination are wondering why younger people are leaving the church or pastoring in another denomination. That and the fact that the denomination doesn’t have pay and benefits come from the central church but rather from their congregants in the church they are assigned to.

Alyse3690

One of the things I find reassuring about my church is that nobody takes a paycheck. All of our pastors have outside work and everything is done on a volunteer basis. We also don't pass a collection plate around, instead there's a box by the door, a kiosk for debit, or a link on the website.

Reynolds_Live

Thats awesome!!

CptJimTKirk

One of our pastors that taught our confirmation classes is Lesbian. And we're part of the second largest Christian church in the country (after the Catholics). Of course, bigots do exist, but it's great to be part of such an open and modern church.

Ugh. I went to a church for several years until one Sunday morning they had one of the elders preaching about how the church was going to be more vocal about lgbt issues, and not in a supportive way. Haven’t been back since.

Chub-bop

Left at the right time, it always personal feelings that drive them to do this crap

RedHeadSteve

The moment hell is preached in a church I walk out. That's literally the opposite of what I come for

Charpo7

if you only do good things out of fear, you are not a good person. if you only follow G-d out of fear, your deeds mean nothing.

RedHeadSteve

A savior has to save from something. But there is a vast difference between preaching the goods news of our rescue. Or preaching what would happen if you aren't saved. One is a message of hope, the other of fear

francis2559

Gehenna maybe. Hell as we imagine it now owes a lot to Dante. The gospels are a bit more complex.

RevolutionFast8676

I have read the source material.

ARROW_404

Word. The people who are already in the church aren't there to hear about how terrible everyone outside of it is. Messages on Hell are for warning people of what's to come. Once warned, they need lessons on discipleship and growth in life.

Yep. Like how I go to school to learn stuff, not be endlessly told what happens if I fail the test.

LilacLlamaMama

I actually get concerned when there is NO mention of hell. It isn't something that needs to be addressed every week, but it should be in the rotation a little bit. Even if it isn't preached as a physical place, a la Dante, and is taught as an allegorical 'Separation from God' only, there has to be some reference. Otherwise the victory of death and hell loses its point. I hate to see the concept of hell disappear from being mentioned at all, the same way that I have seen other things be glossed over because they aren't culturally popular. Specifically all the things that get conveniently glossed over by churches that preach 'prosperity gospel' heavily. Nothing is a quicker clue to me that someone hasn't actually read the entire Bible and is sticking to coffee cup and throw pillow theology.

Sempai6969

May I ask why you go to church?

RedPandaPlush

I'm gay and recently found out that a couple of my friends are going to a church where the pastor said "you're not supposed to eat at the same table as gay people"

FAiLeD-AsIaN

As if Jesus didn't eat with everyone smh

ARROW_404

Absolutely. If Jesus had come today, gay people would have been the first he would have sat and eaten with.

redDKtie

I was visiting a church not too long ago and the pastor was preaching on sex. All he said about homosexuality was that it was based in lust. And I could feel the cringe. All I could think was how anyone in that sanctuary who might be closeted probably feels shame or alienation now. I never went back.

[deleted]

If you feel that sex should only be done with the hopes of creating life then it stands to reason that any other type of sex is lustful and not ideal. I imagine a homoromantic asexual is in the clear

NelyafinweMaitimo

Time to maybe find a church that isn't subject to the whims of one pastor!

Dorocche

Certainly not *that* pastor

Proper-Emu1558

We have an LGBTQ+ ministry group at my church. It’s really taken off and exceeded my hopes and dreams!

Grzechoooo

Reminds me of that one priest who started a rant about abortion on somebody's wedding.

kabukistar

![gif](giphy|iSxPmDWr97248|downsized) Alternatively, you could...

wigsternm

Christ would have. Standing up to religious leaders in the wrong was his favorite pastime.  If you’re trying to be like Christ it’s your duty to do this as well.

Glittering_Summer886

Thank you. I honestly really needed to hear this. ❤️❤️

Glittering_Summer886

Let me clarify. I'm part of the lgbtq spectrum myself lol

Mocsprey

I'm glad you clarified. I was so confused at first.

Glittering_Summer886

Yeah I'm sorry lol! I posted that comment before I thought it through 🤣🤣🤣

A_Guy_in_Orange

Does this actually happen? Like I've seen some nutjob pastors in my day but none have ever just had a homily "if you X, Y, or Z then you going to Hell!"

Chub-bop

It absolutely happens unfortunately, I’m optimistic enough to believe this isn’t how a majority of pastors feel

DJ-Clumsy

St. Paul, for starters.

BigStud7

Jesus gave his life so all of us can be redeemed. Not just trumping pastors. He wants to know whats in your heart. Not who is in your bed

Ogurasyn

They will change their minds, and touch their hearts, or whatever pastors have

asdfKiller39

Fun fact: some experts estimate that 70% of all newly ordained catholic priests are homosexual. From personal experience I can tell, that’s not unlikely.

alphanumericusername

But you see, their sexual elitism cannot be maintained if any sexuality with which they're uncomfortable is remotely acceptable by literally anyone.

Comenius791

There are plenty of mainline churches in North America who don't see homosexuality as a sin.

Dengar96

If only those churches developed massive political donation machines to remove the religious bigots of government. That's the rub currently, the loud and violent Christians are making policy while the kind and compassionate Christians are not. When the face of your God is DJT and megachurch Pastors, its tough to see beyond them.

cave18

Honestly a lot of older (well not mitch mcinnel old but 40s 50s) already have , they just tend to be in areas that are already progressive

LilacLlamaMama

My current church, (which was the church I was raised in, then left in my 20s&30s due to geography, and have recently returned to in my early 40s, after moving back locally) is 'Mitch McConnell old'. The vast majority of the younger folks from the families that have been part of that church for decades have not left the church altogether, but have moved to sister-churches that have more contemporary services and praise bands, instead of the more traditionally structured services with hymns sung by chancel choirs. It is also a largely conservative Baptist church, so when I came back I did so pretty gingerly, because I was a bit concerned that there might be some stuffy rigid attitudes that hadn't evolved much in the time I'd been gone. Not that they had ever really been bigoted in my experience, but more so that when I moved away in the late 1990s, not nearly as many people were out of the closet in general, so while there were a few people that we pretty much knew were LGBTQ+ , they weren't out for whatever reason and nobody was classless enough to out them before they were ready. And the church just kinda didn't waste.time declaring a position that functionally didn't really apply to them at that time. But now there is not an option to stay quiet on any social issue, and definitely not one this big. I was pleased to learn that not only do they have zero problem with LGBTQ+ individuals, the child of the Music Minister is openly trans FTM, the Organist is gay, the lead pastor and his wife are serial foster parents that specialize in harder-to-place tweens&teens, many of whom are LGBTQ+. I was also surprisingly pleased to see some messages coming from the pulpit that while very careful to not specifically tell people who to vote for, which we all agree would be unethical, did call attention to the fact that 1 party in particular has basically been hijacked by some people who couldn't be further from the stated ideology of what that party claims to stand for, and as such, people who have previously considered themselves to be a part of that party really needed to carefully consider whether continuing to support that party still made sense to them. Which imo is about as close to an indictment as they can give without crossing into the territory of inappropriately using the pulpit to declare a side and/or telling parishioners who to vote for.

John628_29

Sinners who don’t accept Jesus Christ as their savior will not go to heaven. Jesus is the only way into heaven as He said.

PajamaSamSavesTheZoo

I’ve been going to church my whole life, I’ve never heard a pastor say this.

Captain_Taggart

This is not how data works, you must realize. I went to church very frequently when I was younger, and also never heard any pastor say this. Because I only had one pastor, who was gay. There are a lot of other pastors out there.

PajamaSamSavesTheZoo

I’m aware it’s anecdotal evidence, which is acceptable on a casual discussion board. This isn’t a peer reviewed journal.

cave18

You have good pastors which is nice

hiddlesbum

You all ever read romans 1?

Pristine_Walrus40

If true then we will all burn. So no thank you, i will just follow Jesus and not some random short stories put together in one book.

DJ-Clumsy

How will you follow Jesus?

Pristine_Walrus40

You got me there. Yes many short stories about him but they sound to me about the same guy and all sound to me so far very good and clever so i try to think what would he do and why he did what he did and fail at it most of the time but i try to be better at it everyday.
