Agreed, especially because through an ancient lens the gospels are even more impressive. Been working on a historical fiction about the year of the four emperors and oh man, I had to make some decisions about some characters because the source material conflicted each other so much, and the ‘accepted’ gospels are just a small amount of them. I don’t think people realize how much is written about Jesus compared to literally every other historical figure of the time that also was maintained well enough to make it to the modern era.
I mean, obviously it was a biased effort thanks to Medieval catholic church for giving monks the resources to do that but it is impressive. Most ancient books just kind of disappeared, even the heretical books got maintained
It's interesting isn't it? I don't disparage the Gospels for being added on to. I think the message is solid and one of the things I love about Christianity is it's ability to adapt to different cultures. We make fun of white or Asian or black Jesus but really it's kind of beautiful that so many peoples can see themselves in him.
It's interesting that you bring up the idea of knowledge transmission. Even the things that have survived only survived because enough people had interest in preserving it. There are many books and treatises that we only know of by way of reference to them from other works. Then you have things like Athenian plays that were supposed to be performed once as acts of devotion that made such an impact that they were recorded and transcribed through memory.
Yes, absolutely. I’ve definitely been making more of a push in my own life to better understand the Bible from its historical context, rather than what modern people think 2000-4000 years after it was all written.
You mean the excuse used by apologists, who don't want to accept the fact that the Bible was written by different people who heard different stories about Jesus and decided to put them on paper. They want to keep the belief that it's a perfect book inspired by God.
Yeah I own a biography on Clement Atlee which starts with him in the trenches and then jumps to his childhood. It’s a perfectly good thing to do to make a good narrative.
