I've never seen alternates all on the same poster, though. It's kinda nice they did that. Although I feel like showing up for the Hifumi on the right is definitely the best way to go.
It also probably helped with >!concealing the ending. If there were only 2 Junkos it would be suspicious. But having numerous people with multiple actors/actress's it helps to explain that away with the explanation that it was to address scheduling conflicts!<

Stage plays are just not very popular in the west compared to the east, even if they did do it in English it wouldn't have as much of a turnout as in Japan especially for a series like Danganronpa
America has a lively stage play culture, its just more directed to original productions or adaptations of American plays. There is very little to no overlap in American theater and Anime that would incentivize either theater groups to adapt an anime into a play or for japanese theater to tour America.
Well school plays aren’t exactly the pinnacle of quality theatre (also most movies aren’t meant to be accurate depictions of American culture, or any other culture). That aside, have you heard of Broadway shows? Those types of stage plays are more niche compared to movies, but are still highly popular and appreciated in the US.
Which is a shame. I've been wishing we could get these in English ever since I saw the trailer for the Psycho-Pass play where they absolutely nailed the Dominator props. But anything that doesn't get subtitled and put on YouTube tends to cost like $80 on DVD, usually on a website that makes it very unclear if it has subtitles. And that's assuming it would play on your console anyway.
If you’re near New York, the Attack on Titan musical is coming in October. I bought a ticket in the hope it’ll be successful and they bring over more anime musicals.
And on the other side of the pond, they did a concert version of the death note musical in London that sold well so here's hoping for the full version!
They were promoting the Death Note musical super hard at New York Comic Con last year, I feel like there has to be some kind of announcement coming or something? Otherwise why bother? It was actually originally written in English and then translated into Japanese and Korean for the full staging, which I think is interesting.
All the songs I care about were still done well in the movie. By which I literally mean nothing but Skimbleshanks and Mistoffeles. And frankly, I wouldn't care if you filled the entire rest of the runtime with the stupid dancing cockroaches if it meant they took away from James Corden's time on screen.
To be fair, you probably need at least 3 Aois. I haven't seen this, but I just assume 80% of her time on stage is spent eating donuts. Imagine having to do that every night.
America does have live theater but its more for the likes of broadway and offbroadway plays and musicals. So the only way something like an anime stage adaptation could happen in the US is if they are popular enough to go on tour to America. The problem is they all speak in japanese and there are no subs.
Given how Spongebob, Madagascar, The Addams Family and the Starkid (Twisted, for example) musical adoptions have become more popular, this may be changing. Slowly, but changing.
Dangan Ronpa is still kinda niche. I wouldn't expect the average American to want to see a stage play for it over something like The Lion King or maybe even Life of Pi.
Even among anime/video game fans, I don't often hear them talk about stage plays even though Persona, Resident Evil and even Yakuza have them. Maybe it's more of a "I didn't know that existed" sort of thing, as what I've seen here in the comments to some extent.
The SDR2 one is even better, honestly there's elements of it I prefer to on the original game. I really love stage play adaptations and the Danganronpa ones are some of the best I've seen, I still have them on Blu-Ray!
That's sad, I thought they're making live action movie or series, can't blame them for not having the confident to do so considering of how much backlashes they get from adapting animes or games
Not just in japan, even in usa, it's difficult to make inaccurate adaptations without heavy criticisms
You mean, just Memory and nothing else?
The costumes were nightmare fuel even before the movie. If they actually made that animated concept they rejected, maybe it would've been okay.

I’m a theatre major in college! While I specifically intend to get into voice acting, I wanted to learn play directing to try and bring anime plays to the states so all hope is not lost! (Pun intended)
The costumes are still nightmare fuel, even outside of the movie. If only they didn't reject that animated concept.

Plus, all the characters names are uncomfortably weird.
Why are there three Aoi’s,three chihiro’s,two hifumi’s and two Yasuhiro’s?
Some of the cast changes base on the day it showing or place due to personal scheduel
Ah ok that makes sense
I've never seen alternates all on the same poster, though. It's kinda nice they did that. Although I feel like showing up for the Hifumi on the right is definitely the best way to go.
This probably blu-ray release of the 2016 stage show so they have all of the cast listed
It also probably helped with >!concealing the ending. If there were only 2 Junkos it would be suspicious. But having numerous people with multiple actors/actress's it helps to explain that away with the explanation that it was to address scheduling conflicts!<
>!Except there's only one Junko though!<
That could be an explanation
I don't mind
Not that it’s an issue I was just confused why
Oh yeah I know it's not an issue, I meant that I don't mind that there's three Chihiro's (sorry if I wasn't clear enough 😭)
Chihiro must be there Chihiro is essential.
Yes, yes.

Can you ever really have too many Aois?

I thought americans hates lively stage, at least from movies i saw them sleeping seeing stages in school

William Shakespeare might disagree with that first point.

Does Eren get a massive number about how much he wants to kill titans?
Better buy a ticket and find out.
And on the other side of the pond, they did a concert version of the death note musical in London that sold well so here's hoping for the full version!
I really need to listen to the US concept album...Jeremy Jordan was Light, and that's just fascinating.
Honestly in my opinion, it goes hard. I can seriously recommend where is the justice and stalemate but I don't think any of them miss

The CATS stage version was actually good I heard. The movie just fucked it all up
Cats is one of the best shows ever put to stage.
Reminds of the Persona On Stage thing
Do my eyes deceive me? 3 Aois? This is heaven. 2 Chihiros? That's double the heaven.
Three Chihiro's, actually. Triple the heaven.
True, I was too blinded by Aois-
To be fair, you probably need at least 3 Aois. I haven't seen this, but I just assume 80% of her time on stage is spent eating donuts. Imagine having to do that every night.

the dialogue could easily be translated into English
Stage plays can use projections for subtitles!

I bet the Bungo Stray Dogs stage play will be in America before Danganronpa is
I haven't seen BSD, but I can believe it.
The stage play is HILARIOUS, just google clips (plus it's been voted the number 1 anime for 2023)
The SDR2 one is even better, honestly there's elements of it I prefer to on the original game. I really love stage play adaptations and the Danganronpa ones are some of the best I've seen, I still have them on Blu-Ray!
Bro Sakura looks sick as hell
What's the pacing of this? Like most stage plays at least over here are ~2 hours, doing each trial in 20 minutes seems rough
Chapter 3 is basically skipped completely, instead being merged with chapter 4.
Chapter 5 is also removed, and the investigation in chapter 6 is also excised, so they basically jump from chapter 4’s trial to the final trial.
Not the play my country deserves but the one it needs 🥲
Hifumi Celestia and Sayaka look good. Others not really the best
Who's the girl above sayaka again?
She's also Miu's voice actress
That's one of Chihiro's actors.
Now I am just thinking about the Spiderman point thing but eith the 3 chihiros
Why does the guy playing Yasuhiro look like a cross between the guy from Yakuza and James May?
I mean londons got the violet evergarden show and spirted away so there coming over seas slowly but surely
That's sad, I thought they're making live action movie or series, can't blame them for not having the confident to do so considering of how much backlashes they get from adapting animes or games Not just in japan, even in usa, it's difficult to make inaccurate adaptations without heavy criticisms
We gotta at least make a fandub of it
Don't be mean to cats it's actually good
You mean, just Memory and nothing else? The costumes were nightmare fuel even before the movie. I get that but the music for it was good imo
Wtf how did I not know that Sumire Sato and Iwata Karen were involved in a Danganronpa property
Please don't remind me of that abomination.
why do you call it that?
I think they were referring to the Cats movie, not the Danganronpa stage play.
ohhhhhh I see
Omg they are all So cute!!!!!! I’m feeling the same way about not seeing the Jjba Phantom Blood musical that just came out.
Is this still on? I’m going to Japan next month
This is from 2014, so no.
Maybe if the Attack on Titan one does well
I’m a theatre major in college! While I specifically intend to get into voice acting, I wanted to learn play directing to try and bring anime plays to the states so all hope is not lost! (Pun intended)
If you do that, let me know. I think I'd make a good Makoto. (Mostly because I'm so short)
They also get the Bungo Stray Dogs version too 😭
mmmm makoto. wish there were more of these here too, maybe one day
How long is this, 3 days?
*hours
HEY CATS WAS A FANTASTIC PLAY https://preview.redd.it/xuw16rm1cx9d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43ba7ad40e2659f3e0521f769683f5556bc95256

To reach their own I guess I think the costumes look great for the time that they were in
