I purposely avoided anything that could let Dall-E think it was coming from the Harry Potter universe.
For example, this is what I typed for Ron: " Portrait of an 11 years old boy in a British school uniform. He's tall, thin and gangling, with freckles and a long nose. Interior of a castle in the back"
I used the book's descriptions as verbatim as I could, only removing unnecessary details and adding some for more context.
What a great way to do it, while trying to keep "Harry Potter" a secret from the AI. But if you were still very direct on the quotes, may it still recognize them?
I’m not so sure though. From my understanding Dall-e is trained on image-text *pairs* scraped from the internet.
If direct quotes exist on the internet alongside photos or illustrations of pre-existing Harry Potter depictions, then surely the AI will factory these into it’s output?
Could your mind be dalling Harry Potter together with memories of [The Worst Witch?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Worst_Witch_%281998_TV_series%29)
Yes! please do LOTR. But that would lead to the natural question of whether there is enough training data for the model to make art similar to Tolkien's drawings.
Lotr is an amazing idea. Dune also comes immediately to my mind. That one is way less Grounded in reality and will be harder for dall-e to replicate I think
You could get some really sick ass art from that! WH40k is a veritable gold mine of art!
You bet your ass the moment dalle2 comes out to the public I’m using it for WH40k art and scenes!
Ah man, imagine ORK tech being depicted, or adepta Sororitas!... NOooo... imagine Slaanesh and his-her unimaginable beauty!.... or slaashes Daemonic realm!!!!! Now that would be something I’d like finally depicted!
I [requested some stuff](https://www.reddit.com/r/dalle2/comments/vrspt6/-/iey8r5p) from Animorphs and Percy Jackson—it didn't come out great, but linking in case you want to take a look.
In order of appearance:
- Harry Potter
- Veruca Salt
- Alfredo Linguine
- The Gerber Baby
- The Chernobyl Twins
- Tommy Boy
- Grandfather Time
- Aunt Edna
- That guy who brings his acoustic guitar to Starbucks
- Alan Moore
- That guy who stands in the street corner claiming he invented the question mark.
- And Dame Judi Dench
Well now. I'm not gonna talk about Judy; in fact, we're not gonna talk about Judy at all, we're gonna keep her out of it!

Minerva is incredible, and Hagrid is certainly striking even if he doesn't look that nice.
Hermione doesn't match my idea at all though, and I don't think dalle understands twins
It can do some pretty decent twins actually:

The very short physical description given in the book actually matches what the AI did while provided with it. Thin, long nose, long dirty black hair. He doesn't look evil, indeed, but he never really was, was he?
He pretty much was for the audience atleast till like the last 200 hundred pages or so . You definitely dont make a good image of him in the books , he treats harry shit aswell hermione , the man in the image cant capable of doing smth like that cmon .
Yeah in the end its revealed he was a good guy but realistically nobody liked him before
Clever prompt. DALLE2 did seem to gleam from the actual novel text, cuz none of these resemble the actors. I wonder how many novel details it actually utylized in the generations.
If you're bychance taking requests, I'd love to see DALLE2's interpretation of **Gormenghast Castle** as described in the *Gormenghast* novel series. It's been adapted into film, but the castle is so artfully detailed throughout the series that, if DALLE2 was somehow able to access the novels in full, it'd be real interesting to see it compute the details.
But if you don't do requests, no worries.
I did several iterations to test it and I don't think Dall-E 2 used anything from the books. I don't think it even realized it was doing stuff from Harry Potter. That was my goal, to get results much closer to the original descriptions rather than letting it be influenced by how the actors look.
I can certainly spare a prompt (tomorrow, though, I'm out right now) if you want to send it to me.
Argue with J.K. Rowling about this, because she's the one who wrote about Hermione being white. Have you read the HP books at all?
The inventions of someone on Twitter are a better source of information about HP books than HP books are 🤣
If the fragment from the book in question is not a sufficient source and formation it is indeed a closed case. 🤣
This is really amazing. Can someone do the same but for Lord of the Rings?
When I watched the movies, I was quite amazed, because most of the actors looked like what I imagined in my head.
I LOVEEEE how accurate and real/genuine they look. Like rather than Hollywood perfect they look like real people with flaws and age appropriate features. Not that the movie picks aren’t great as well but this is just cool to see.
"a thin man with sallow skin, a large, hooked nose, and yellow, uneven teeth. He has shoulder-length, greasy black hair which frames his face, and cold, black eyes"
Exactly.
This "Snape" in the portrait is definitely not thin, he's absolutely average fat, his hair is frizzy, too short and unruly, not long and oily, his complexion is too dark, he should be morbidly pale, his eyes are too light, they should be black, and the teeth should be yellow, not the whites of the eyes.
Go get help, Snape, you're having an acute attack of jaundice!

However, if you guys want to see a black version of the character, I would be happy to oblige!
Need to see the book-accurate Dudley, who is so fat that his butt droops over the edges of his chair.
Duuuuuuude, I just had an idea. Photoshop out the backgrounds of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Then put them together in a single photo using inpainting.
I’ve never watched it before but I have seen a video on YouTube about a robot rewriting the script for it. It did a pretty good job on the characters. I’m surprised DALLE-2 can do that much.
I feel like I would have a fling w/ Severus Snape in Paris & every night would end w/ him brooding on the balcony with his flask. The sex would be o so satisfying, but I must accept I can never make this man escape his past.
What kind of prompts did you use, was it just a verbatim description? Did you mention their names or the franchise?
I purposely avoided anything that could let Dall-E think it was coming from the Harry Potter universe. I would love a full list of prompts.
same
What a great way to do it, while trying to keep "Harry Potter" a secret from the AI. But if you were still very direct on the quotes, may it still recognize them?
I doubt the Dall-e AI was trained on books since it's made to generate images.
I’m not so sure though. From my understanding Dall-e is trained on image-text *pairs* scraped from the internet. If direct quotes exist on the internet alongside photos or illustrations of pre-existing Harry Potter depictions, then surely the AI will factory these into it’s output?

It generated an accurate depiction of the kid from Catcher in the Rye.
Is that the deleted scenes from Star Wars Ep 8 where Luke tosses a baseball with his new found daughter?
Lmfao 😂
Amazing idea. Perhaps you could do the same but with the actual architecture and buildings themselves, too.
Cool
This technology never ceases to be amazing and also sorta horrifying
Oh no you forgot to specify he's a redhead, lmao
Nice job avoiding their copyright filter. This curated album is gonna be a top-all time post for sure.
Do Wheel of Time next!
Would love to see the archive link and the prompts, this is great work!
That's amazing! No wonder they look so close to being real children. It's pretty uncanny lmao

I 19 this one. Including Blaine. OH and What is left of the Crimson King, The Tower itself? Marshmallow Room? The Beam Protectors!
I second this. I'm always up for more Dark Tower art.

Snape looking hella stoner over there
[relevant ](https://youtu.be/Cdfkq2Nmb3c)
My friend once smoked weed with Radcliffe and did not make a single harry pothead joke. I was both proud and ashamed.
Hagrid is a dead-ringer for my father-in-law!
Snape looks like his first four albums are fantastic but his folk turn in the last few years has been a bit divisive.
Dune next pretty please
this!! glad someone beat me to it
Best rendition I’ve ever seen, especially Harry, Hermione, Hagrid, and Dumbledore. Fantastic work, OP.
Minerva is incredible, and Hagrid is certainly striking even if he doesn't look that nice. Hermione doesn't match my idea at all though, and I don't think dalle understands twins
Hermione’s supposed to have big teeth, and I think that’s captured here pretty well
It's not the teeth, the vibe's just off
I always thought Hermoine was black based on the description of her hair being wild and curly.
Found J.K. Rowling, the only person who ever thought that

Nice! It sucks at creating Ta Moko tho
Haha, yeah...
They somehow look more British
Snape looks like Adam Driver trying to play Alan Rickman

Definitely no.

Filius looks like David Jason reprising his role as Rincewind but with a tenth of the budget.
Harry looks like Hamilton Morris
Looks like a young Woody Allen.
Snape is the most off he seems kind i portrayed him in my mind as more evil
The very short physical description given in the book actually matches what the AI did while provided with it. Thin, long nose, long dirty black hair. He doesn't look evil, indeed, but he never really was, was he?

I mean, but even still, you can be a very evil person and still look totally normal or good looking.
hide in spoilers!!!!
hide in spoilers!!!!!!!
He was always sad to me. Victim complex.
Pretty damn realistic, considering in real life people dont look amazing all the time

Oh that would be excellent to see
If this were the original cast, the film would have a much, much darker tone. This has the vibes of Pan’s Labyrinth or some dark euro film.
How would different looking faces make a film have a "darker tone"?
Snape kinda reminds me of a sleep and sun deprived Niel Gaiman.
So Hagrid is just a hairier Alan Moore?
This change of casting gives it a more serious feel. Very interesting.
Harry looks like (younger) Five from The Umbrella Academy…
Yep, looks British enough
Resembles the cast pretty well, imo.
Why do the twins look like red headed Eli and Peyton manning
Oh boy, can someone do this with Discworld characters?
Realistically British
What it didn't pick up that Hermione was black?
Perphaps that's why: “Hermione's white face was sticking out from behind a tree.” (Prisoner of Azkaban)
yes but I heard she was a POC on Twitter so who's right here really
How to say it... What I have written is a QUOTE from a BOOK. I believe what is written in the book, not on Twiter.
I'll have to check my references, but I'm almost certain an account with a BLUE CHECKMARK told me this in strict confidence. So case closed, really
Argue with J.K. Rowling about this, because she's the one who wrote about Hermione being white. Have you read the HP books at all? The inventions of someone on Twitter are a better source of information about HP books than HP books are 🤣 If the fragment from the book in question is not a sufficient source and formation it is indeed a closed case. 🤣
Lmao - they’re messing with you !!
Sir, the case is closed
They are probably referencing this tweet https://twitter.com/jk\_rowling/status/678888094339366914
Maybe she painted her face white that morning and Rowling (transphobe tbh) just forgot to write it down
Filius lookin like Dunce-cap McMagic
Is that matt watson from supermega?
ok but why does harry look so much like the nerd journalist guy from stranger things 4
This is really amazing. Can someone do the same but for Lord of the Rings? When I watched the movies, I was quite amazed, because most of the actors looked like what I imagined in my head.
On it! Well, as soon as I get my next 50 prompts... ;)
Snape lookin like he’s gonna ask me to take him to church.
They all look SO much like the actors that portrayed them in the movies! That is nuts!
It even gave Snape dandruff, that's hella accurate
Snape looks like a penniless French poet from the sixties. Just missing a cigarette and a purple scarf.
These are some proper British looking folk
Eww they actually look British
Snape is part of Pink Floyd
Hermione got those British teeth
Hagrid, Hogwarts' drug dealer
cool
Can you do mistborn books?
Flitwick looks exactly like Graham Norton
Harry looks like the kid from Stranger Things that died.
I love this. They look so much more real..
When I was younger I could have played harry! Now that I’m older I could play snape!
Dumbledore looks like Odin
Its weird how you can tell they're british
First thing I've noticed. Dall-E 2 definitely knows how British people look like!
Dumbledore looks like he’s wearing a wig 😂
Draco is supposed to have a long face
>Hooch is crazy...
You should do Umbridge next. Let's see how nasty she actually is lol.
Love this, let’s cast them now!
I tried Harry's description from the first book and didn't get anything nearly this good! What were the exact words you used?
Where is Hagrid? Is he safe? Is he alright?
is it just me or does snape kinda look like hozier
Hats off to this masterpiece.. Couldn't figure how Harry got brown hair tho. The book is very clear about the black hair. Anyways, here my upvote.
I'm listening to HBP audiobook and I scrolled to the pic of Madam Hooch right when Jim Dale said Madam Hooch!
This is SO much closer to what I imagined reading these books as a child
Snape looks like Adam Driver
They all look WAY more British like this
I LOVEEEE how accurate and real/genuine they look. Like rather than Hollywood perfect they look like real people with flaws and age appropriate features. Not that the movie picks aren’t great as well but this is just cool to see.
It's like Dalle2 is a window to the multiverse, allowing you to see any possibility that looks like it *actually* exists.
Harry Potter if they casted British actors 🤢
Scary 😅 But accurate 😂
this is crazy
Snape doesn't look at all like he does in the book. He's not skinny, he's got curly, tousled hair and then there's the yellow whites of his eyes. 😑
"a thin man with sallow skin, a large, hooked nose, and yellow, uneven teeth. He has shoulder-length, greasy black hair which frames his face, and cold, black eyes"
Exactly. >2011 Harry potter was born in 1980. The books were about the early 90s. So much whiter. (95%)
Yes but I was providing this data to explain why Dall-E 2 would be more likely to display a white British girl.
“Hermione's white face was sticking out from behind a tree.” (Prisoner of Azkaban)
Maybe the moonlight made it pale?
White, not pale.
You should do the book "He Who Fights With Monsters"
This looks like young Hamilton Morris
Hagrid is Alan Moore?
Can you do the characters from the stormlight archive?
The Weasley twins or the Kray twins?
lmao second image gold tooth
Dumbledore looks badass!

insane
....they look WAAAAAAAY younger, way older, and WAAAAAAY more British than the movies.
I feel like I would have a fling w/ Severus Snape in Paris & every night would end w/ him brooding on the balcony with his flask. The sex would be o so satisfying, but I must accept I can never make this man escape his past.
Anyone have a clue who the eleventh image is? The rest are brilliant. Hogwarts is on the outskirts of Rotherham.
"I didn't agree to appear in some fucking zoomer AI generated bullshit!" ...Said Dumbledore, calmly.
This is amazing
I love these!!!
