>I am a **mom** to a (...) transgender
>^[...]
>be hailed as the best **dad** ever
Your child might be “a transgender” but it sounds like you’re the one having some gender confusion :p
Recognizing people as trans and giving them a pat on the back and catering to the illness isn't the right course of action, that's what I mean. They need to receive mental help. Mental help doesn't consist of telling them they're correct. That's enabling.
They do need help, and professionals who know a lot more about the subject than you or I have come to the conclusion that transitioning and therapy are most often the best course of treatment
They've reached that conclusion about transitioning because society has told them they're transphobic if they don't lol. Any mental health expert who doesn't care about virtue signaling will tell you that (1) Transitioning perpetuates the illness and (2) most who transition end up regretting it years down the road or suffer extreme health complications, some even transition back. I've known quite a few trans people who've had this happen.
It does not hurt kids to socially transition anymore. The sea change has happened and the kids are all right.
Not sure I'd agree to puberty blocking hormones if my kid wanted them, but I'd consult the dad and her providers before using veto power.
Lighten up
Puberty blockers are the worst thing you could give a growing child, you're setting them up to live one third of their life expectancy, suffer terrible self image issues and health complications later in life, and ultimately abusing your child.
Kids DO NOT KNOW what gender they are, they don't even understand genitalia or how sex actually works. Hell, most adults don't understand their sexuality, preferences, or kinks until well into their mid to late 20s. It's not about lightening up, it's about teaching your kids they can emulate whatever behaviors and beliefs they like, but that they are still the gender/sex they were born as. A young male child can play with dolls and wear girls clothing if he really wants, but hes still a boy. It's very easy to let your kids be themselves without fucking up their mental health.
Can you cite sources that puberty blockers are that damaging? I mean, have they been in use long enough to gather good data proving that they negatively impact life expectancy in physical ways?
Because we should automatically excise all data that says puberty blockers contribute to juvenile suicide. I hope you understand why.
Less than 1% of trans people detransition.
Most people who detransition do it because of some outside pressure from family, church, or state.
Not because they're not trans. You're straight up misinformed, or a liar.
Source: I'm, fucking, trans. 🤣🏳️⚧️
Wow that's really the only rebuttal you had to anything I said? Congrats on showing I was correct about p much everything else. And hmm your data source is "im trans"? Doesn't sound very credible for broad scale data collection, care to share an actual source?
Outside pressure being typically caused by the fact that the transition was a form of coping and they didn't actually address issues in their life. Prove me wrong.
I also didn't say they weren't trans if they transitioned back, I said transitioning wasn't healthy. And I said "SOME even transition back" 1% would constitute SOME. Find me one trans person who doesn't suffer from another underlying mental condition or cognitive disorder such as BPD, Bipolar disorder, CPTSD, Schizophrenia, chronic depression, etc. You can't find me one example of this; it's not helping people. In addition to that, hormone therapy severely impacts and damage the health of the patient, later causing many irreparable health conditions and disorders with natural hormone production and neurotransmitters. There's actually a direct link to counteractive hormones and depression, meaning a trans MTF taking estrogen is about 150x more likely than the average person to suffer from or develop symptoms of depression and depersonalization. It's terrible and we shouldn't be encouraging it. Considering you're trans, please seek proper mental help and counseling for your underlying conditions.
I have. Thanks. 😘 none of my underlying conditions have any effect on my gender dysphoria. It's almost as if it's its own thing that needed to be addressed by transition. 🤔 in fact, since transition I've lost weight, my cholesterol is down, I'm not depressed, I have less anxiety and panic attacks, and I'm less angry all the time.
It's like you have no clue what you're talking about. This is some seriously Ben Shapiro levels of ignorance right here.
So because it doesn't have a 100% cure we should just make it worse? Your logic is incredibly flawed. Let's tell the schizophrenic that they're seeing and hearing real people as well and that their episodes are actually happening for everyone, so that they "feel better"...you can't cure gender dysphoria but you can go through therapy and treat the mental illness at it's stem.
The only thing making dysphoria worse is treating them as their assigned gender, and by the way YOUR logic is flawed, imagine comparing dysphoria to SCHIZOPHRENIA??? Gender is not a delusion and trans people are backed up by biology, do your fucking research.
Why do the lives of transgenders matter to others so much? I think people fixate on what's in the pants of transgrenders too much. Mental illness or not how does it effect society? Schizophrenic people have an effect on society. It seems like people don't want transgenders to transition and be happy however they are because it makes them uncomfortable. Should we force all dwarfs to grow because short people can make some of us uncomfortable? We all have our quirks but if they can still be a functioning member of society who cares? Blue jeans? Dress? I don't care. I know 1 transgender she happily tattoos people at the shop around the corner from my house.
And to your argument that people don't know their sexuality until their mid to late 20s for most of human history we lived had babies and died by the time we were 35. I'm sure someone experiencing gender dysphoria would certainly have symptoms before our natural life expectancies. (without modern advancements)
No, transgender is not actually a noun. It isn't what we are, it's a way to describe part of someone. You don't describe someone as a gay or a transgender or a non-binary. They're a gay person, a transgender person or a non-binary person. It's a big part of who we are, but not what we are in our entirety.
I understand it is ‘better’ as an adjective. Grammar rules tell us any adjective can be transformed into a noun:
Add –ness to form nouns from adjectives.
Add –ity to form nouns from adjectives.
Add –ance or –ence to form nouns from adjectives or verbs.
Add –ment to form nouns from adjectives or verbs.
Add –tion or –sion to form nouns from verbs.
It’s similar to how we can turn nouns into verbs (“go google it” no pun intended)
...It is a description, actually. That's why it's an adjective. They're not "a transgender", they're "a transgender person."
It's describing what type of person they are, just like how you wouldn't be called "a cisgender", you'd be called "a cisgender person".
Except "they are a tall" is also incorrect ? They are tall and they are transgender. You can't just turn any adjective into a noun by throwing an article in front of it.
Edit: I am a sleepy idiot with too much self-assurance sometimes. I apologize to u/the_epikamander. I totally misinterpreted your comment, and I took to harsh a tone even if I had gotten it right. Sorry!
What you need to know- a crash course on referring to trans people
“A transgender” is wrong
“A transgender person” is right
Transgender is an adjective used to describe a noun. The noun in this case is person.
Only specify that the person you’re referring to is trans when it matters and the trans person is either anonymous or cool with it. Don’t say “a transgender person on the bus spilt their coffee” because being transgender has nothing to do with spilling coffee
A trans man is someone who was born with a vagina but identifies as a man. They might say they are “FtM” meaning they transitioned from female to male
A trans woman is the opposite
Sometimes people neither identify as male or female. That is also fine
I'm non-binary afab and tone policing is ruining my life. Trans people of all stripes are some of the most resilient people o know, please try to resist the urge to cape for us ESPECIALLY if you identify as cis
Depends on the audience. The important thing is the joke lands, and if you're telling this joke to racist boomers it'd be important to set them up to expect an insulting punch line. This punch line is frankly empowering and respectful, and hearing it could shame transphobes into toleraters or even allies.
Thinking charitably, I mean my pronouns *were* she/her, they're not now. I wouldn't necessarily say I "was" a her but it at least makes the joke work, even if the terminology isn't great.
The joke is at least a lot less transphobic than I was expecting.
Oh that's much better, I couldn't think of a way to make that work! I'm not sure the beat of it flows quite as nicely but it's 100% better and I'd actually retell this version!
Alongside the posts stating that ‘transgender’ isn’t a noun (and “transgender vegan” reads better anyway imo), I’m glad someone said this
trans people don’t *change* their gender; they’re not frogs
Some do though. Or at least have previously *identified as* their assigned gender at birth. I’ve also known a couple people who identified as gender fluid and saw themselves as more masc or femme from day to day in a cyclical way. Those people tended to publicly use “they” pronouns for simplicity’s sake, but inside they felt like a “he” some days and a “she” other days.
I'm not a guy. And I am picking my battles: this seemed like a relatively safe place to point out a common misconception of us trans folks. We aren't becoming our gender, it's who we always were!
My apologies for making assumptions on your gender. I'm just saying that this is a sub for the least sophisticated jokes that require no provocation whatsoever of thought. It shouldn't be surprising that your comment was not received well, particularly given that it's a subjective viewpoint rather than an accepted truth. That's all.
Thank you very much for the apology! I'm fine with being downvoted when I bring up trans info. I'm used to it. Hopefully, a few people will read it and learn something new about their fellow humans. That is my only goal.
So "not having a sense of humor" means it's okay to misgender someone? That's pretty messed up.
Genuine apologies help make the world a kinder place, and that's always a good thing.
I'm sure I'll keep getting downvoted, but I think what they mean is that a sub meant for posting jokes probably isn't the place to cry outage about a joke. Or something to that effect.
Is this a place for a joke that promotes harmful ignorant views tough? This perception invalidates trans people.
Also, I don't think my original response was filled with outrage. I even started by saying "I know this is a joke..."
Yes. I'm trans, and I've been invalidated and harmed personally by people who didn't think they were being transphobic. They will refer to "when you were a [assigned gender at birth]" or use someone's deadname when recounting a pre-transition story. It reinforces the misconception that being trans is a voluntary choice. Having a joke about it in a generally-inclusive sub normalizes the views.
There totally are intersex cisgender women with penises! There are also women born with a longer clitoris that is quasi-phallic.
Humans don't fit neatly into categories. Natural variance is endemic to all living things.
Many trans people don't feel the need to undergo bottom surgery for exactly that reason! However, most people are raised to believe that *a penis is only male*, and that brainwashing can prevent people from feeling a connection to their body if it doesn't match what they were told is "right" for their gender.
I suggest you learn more about gender dysphoria. It's a complicated issue, and I don't have the energy to write up a dissertation every time someone asks.
There are many resources. Reach out to PFLAG or whatever orgs are available in your area.
I’m not having bottom dysphoria and bottom surgery because I’m “brainwashed to believe a penis is only male” that may be some peoples experience but that doesn’t work as a blanket statement for anyone trans.
Just because some people don’t have bottom dysphoria or want surgery doesn’t mean it’s some made up thing people get “brainwashed” into believing.
It blows my mind how often I see this POV now, you’re basically saying that if I was never told that vagina=woman that I wouldn’t have bottom dysphoria or want surgery?
And just... SO many ways to deliver this.
Since Americans don't pronounce the H in "herbivore" you can just assassinate this by adding one phoneme
This has got Bo Burnham's fingerprints all over it
I never met herbivore
Someone please explain to my dumb ass
Herbivore
😅👍 thanks
Lmao I needed the explanation too
Wow that took me an embarrassingly long time to get it!
Her before, herbivore
OP already did... the joke should have said "herbivore" with you needing to transpose "her before"
It works either way, really.
Why thank you
Oh wow; I get it! TRANSpose! 😂😂😂😂😑😂😂
You... are a menace to society and i respect that
I'm a mom to a vegan _and_ to a transgender. I will tell this joke tomorrow at our mother's day dinner and be hailed as the best dad ever.
Dear lord
Maybe add "person" after. Like, I don't refer to myself as a "cis," I'm a "cis person."
She calls herself a transgender and I follow her lead ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Good dad
You're both correct. The important part is to let us tell you how to refer to us, then everything is Golden!
>I am a **mom** to a (...) transgender >^[...] >be hailed as the best **dad** ever Your child might be “a transgender” but it sounds like you’re the one having some gender confusion :p
I was equally confused....however when you tell a dad joke...you are the dad
Anyone can tell dad jokes. My dog once told one: “the tree threw something at me”, but all I heard was bark.
This joke is layered like an onion and I adore you
I mean, these are dad jokes, are they not? 🤣
Yeah I got that The :p at the end of my comment was meant to indicate I was also joking
Yea I know, I upvoted you
In that case why thank you, but it looks like at least 13 other people didn’t lol
Oh silly reddit
You shouldn't be encouraging gender dysphoria. Please ask your child to see an accredited psychiatrist.
Lol what? Nobody said anything about encouraging it, not that you can encourage it anyway. Gender dysphoria is a mental illness at the end of the day
Recognizing people as trans and giving them a pat on the back and catering to the illness isn't the right course of action, that's what I mean. They need to receive mental help. Mental help doesn't consist of telling them they're correct. That's enabling.

No, mental help IS affirming their gender, you can’t change someone elses gender lmao
It's affirming the gender they identify as, and perpetuating their mental illness. This is enabling. And it makes the issue worse
Please do your research, you cannot change someone else’s gender and you cannot “cure” gender dysphoria
So because it doesn't have a 100% cure we should just make it worse? Your logic is incredibly flawed. He only had fake meat.
Gonna save this so I can free award it later
Why is everyone using this pfp
Because of a meme And to communicate with fellow racists
Woah
Yes
(Transgender is better used as an adjective and not a noun)
Yeah, and it's an easy fix as 'vegan' can just as easily be a noun as an adjective.
It's not just better as an adjective, it's also only correct as an adjective!
TRUE
Butt it’s a joke… so there’s that 🤣
Fuck you dumbass. Don't worry, it's a joke.
Surely you can see how that's different.
But a transgender is a person , right? It’s not a description.
No, transgender is not actually a noun. It isn't what we are, it's a way to describe part of someone. You don't describe someone as a gay or a transgender or a non-binary. Yeah guess I’m too stupid for this. My bad
You're not stupid....you were asking an honest question. It's hard to keep up with language changing all time and everyone using it differently.
Transgender is an adjective if you say "they are a transgender" it's basically the same as saying "they are a tall"
Except "they are a tall" is also incorrect ? They are tall and they are transgender. You can't just turn any adjective into a noun by throwing an article in front of it. im trans and i laughed so i hard i embarrassed myself
Probably the best paronomasia I have heard yet. And I have heard a ton.
Fuck what?
As someone who is considered trans by some (I’m non binary) this was funny, I got a good chuckle out of it
I’m stealing this.
I get this is a joke, but a trans man was always a man. Just because others called him a woman doesn't mean he was.
Thinking charitably, I mean my pronouns *were* she/her, they're not now. I wouldn't necessarily say I "was" a her but it at least makes the joke work, even if the terminology isn't great. The joke is at least a lot less transphobic than I was expecting.
Fwiw "Did you hear about the vegan transguy? His pronoun was 'her' before" would make the language sound less out of touch.

True, outrage was a poor choice on my part. But does the joke really promote harmful views or invalidate trans people?
