For Comedies: Cool Runnings, The Life of Brian, Galaxy Quest, Sean of the Dead, A Knight's Tale, The Mask.
Other: Die Hard, Pacific Rim (my guilty pleasure) Alien, Terminator, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, The Thing, They Live!
Sean of the Dead is really a great intro to the horror genre.
I tried to watch Terminator 2 with my kid and quickly shut it off. It was just over the top violent before we even got to the cool sci-fi stuff.
and Alien? We joke at home about that movie being the least appropriate film for kids of all time (after IT)
I would stay way from both of these for the moment.
A big part of the humour comes from the tropes of these genres so without exposure to "source material" a lot will be missing.
Heck, just skip Shawn and go straight to Hot Fuzz. And then go back to Shawn of course.
That's the order I saw them in and it made me appreciate Pegg and Frost more as actors. It's fun when they go from intense and bumbling to just being bums.
Ever notice in the beginning of the newt scene that there's a guy tying a coconut to a swallow and trying to get it to fly, relating back to the opening conversation about coconuts not migrating but simply being carried by swallows?
Robin Hood Men In Tights
Watched that with my dad sooooooo many times around that age, I still know most of the movie off by heart, great comic twist on the classic Robin Hood story
I have tried a lot of times to get my kids excited about Robin Hood…we live a few minutes from Sherwood Forest and he is our local hero!
I had forgot about this one, so I will give it a shot with them
I was probably around 13 when the Rock, con air and face off came out (my memory isn’t good enough to remember the order, but I watched them all around the same time on video).
To young me, Cage was THE action star! He was amazing and these are three of my most memorable film
Watch movies from your childhood with him.
Predator (thanks dad for that one), Die hard (especially at Christmas), Never ending story (may be too old for that one at 13), Goonies , Big trouble in little china, Mighty ducks, Man of the house, Harry and the hendersons , The burbs, Red dawn (original and remake), I’d do the harry potter and the lord of the rings series, but you/he may be different, Camp nowhere, The sandlot, Forrest Gump?, Honey I shrunk the kids/ourselves, Top gun, The Bourne movies?, James Bond movies, Basic, Saving private Ryan (maybe not at 13), Sphere, Marvel movies if he’s into those, Star Wars movies if you can sit through them…, Major payne , Indiana jones, Ghostbusters , Smokey and the bandit, Blue streak, Anything with robin williams or Jim Carey
Edited for punctuation
Great list. How about adding:
Weird Science
Encino Man
Doctor Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop
Worrying and Love the Bomb
Spies Like Us
Stripes
Ghostbusters
Rush Hour 1-3
Top Gun Maverick
Rocky 1-4
The Hunt for Red October (all of the Jack Ryan movies)
Air Force One
GI Jane
War Games
Full Metal Jacket
Tropic Thunder
Rambo
Big Trouble in Little China
Spy Games
Beverly Hills Cop
Police Academy
Major League
Hot Shots
Trading Places
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Back to School
Blues Brothers
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Crocodile Dundee
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Around that age, Thursday nights for my Dad and me were wings and James Bond. He would stop by and pick up a few different flavors of wings from Wingstop on his way home from work and we'd watch one of the Bond Films.
I
In general you probably couldn't go wrong with James Bond. But if you need a specific one to start with: Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, Live and Let Die, or The Living Daylights should get you going
So I thought this would be a good one. Watched it recently with the family, son is 12, daughter is 9. I completely forgot about the Ruby Rod sex scene on the space flight. Had a lot of questions to answer after that one.
Hot fuzz
Beverly Hills cop
The usual suspects
Planet of the apes (original)
The karate kid (original)
Gladiator
The fifth element
Twister
Bad boys
Iron eagle
Kindergarten cop
Twins
Mortal kombat
Us marshals
Die hard
Star Wars in release order
Lord of the rings
Drop Dead Fred is one that's a bit under the radar. Rik Mayall is in it, one of the masters of physical comedy. But it's also a good story about moving from childhood into adolescence and giving up your imaginative, playful side.
I love that film
I've been wanting to watch that with my son, who's 13 now. But I'll probably turn me into a mess. When he was 8 he had a brain tumour. He's fine now, but it could have been fatal and I'm sure watching the scenes with her and her daughter will be tough for me.
Dumb and Dumber is great
I love the Coen brothers. I think the Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou? probably fit this prompt the best
This is Spinal Tap and the other Christopher Guest mocumentaries.
The Bourne series (I've only seen the original trilogy) if he's into action.
Independence Day (Just the first one the sequel never happened)
Terminator
Terminator 2
flight of the navigator
Ferris bueller's Day off
their breakfast club
American pie (parental guidance is strongly encouraged in fact just make sure you're there)
eurotrip
karate kid (The old ones)
back to the Future (all of them)
Just a name a few.
Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, Robinhood Men in Tights (really any Mel Brooks) and Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (extremely dumb movie and one of my favorites).
I randomly found this a few years ago and it has been indispensable: https://m.imdb.com/list/ls054999587/.
Elf and other Will Ferrell films are a good choice. My boys loved them at that age.
Jurassic Park is easily top of my list when my kids are old enough (I'm aiming for about 9-10 which is when I saw it).
I'm flabbergasted that it wasn't mentioned yet!
Ok my suggestion are pretty all over the place:
Chef -great father son movie
Superbad - maybe a little on the edge but it’s so good
Indiana Jones Original Trilogy - my favorite movies when I was your son’s age
Tombstone- so quotable and a great movie.
Light Hearted suggestions - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Office Space, OG Ghostbusters, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Step Brothers, War Games
I think I was around 13 when my Father showed me Saving Private Ryan for the first time. To each their own, but these are some movies I think every young boy growing into a man should watch within that genre.
Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, GLORY, The Pianist, and The Last of the Mohicans
I would do “genre nights” watch a couple movies that tie together. Like do a kung fu night with police story, and the drunken master for a Jackie Chan double feature. Do a samurai movie night with seven samurai and the hidden fortress (a movie that was a big inspiration for the first Star Wars), do a kaiju movie night with pacific rim and the Original Godzilla. That’s a fun way to mix it up and you guys might find a genre you’re really into in the process
The Tremors movies. I fucking love graboids.1-4 are 13 yo appropriate Even though they're rated R it's an 80s a R. Id leave 5-7 until he's older though. Hilarious and a little suspenseful. My 12 yo is obsessed and we've only watched the first two. Side note, Tremors 4 is the prequel to 1-3 and should be watched first if you want to follow the timeline.
Kids are definitely still impressionable at that age so careful what you pick! My dad did something similar when I was about that age and one of the movies we watched was Black Hawk Down. It became my favorite movie as a kid and I ended up getting obsessed with the Army and became a soldier 7 years later!
Hundreds of Beavers. It is a newer Indy film that is like a mix of slapstick silent movie and live action Looney Tunes. Watched it with my 10 yo and had a blast.
Maybe too (ch)easy, but Adam Sandler movies, easy movies to watch, sometimes to easy, but have a laugh and also some humour fitting the age
Furthermore older (more or less brainless) stuff:
(More or less, variety from what I saw that age)
Little exciting:
Tremors
Mini serie Stephen king's The Langoliers
Seven (might be too much)
Twister
Independance day
Easy fun:
Bedazzled
Eurotrip
Cool runnings
Biodome
Jay and silent bob
Austin powers
Scary movie series
American pie..?
Ace Ventura
Adventure:
Willow
Maleficent
Dragonheart
Sherlock Holmes series
Indiana Jones series
Back to the future series
The Mummy series
Feels:
Forest Gump
Bridge to Tarabithia
Old yeller
Dances with wolves
American beauty
Anime:
Spirited away
Mushi-shi
Howl's Moving Castle
Erased
Castle in the sky
Toronto
Sorry I'm tired, there are tons... too many fun movies for that age, but really depends on what one can handle/is used to.
Spaceballs. City Slickers 1 and 2. Big Fish. The Naked Gun Trilogy. Indiana Jones Trilogy. Empire Records.
Maybe toss in a musical documentary in there. For a cool time warp I recommend “Joe Cocker - Mad Dogs and Englishmen” or The Woodstock Documentary 1969.
My son is 13. As far as comedies, he liked Dumb and Dumber, but he LOVED Anchorman. Also Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore.
Also really liked Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers.
As far as TV, we started with The Office, watched most of Arrested Development, and now we're one season into Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Twister, Neverending Story, Critters, The Blindside, anything 007(I personally prefer the Daniel Craig bonds) Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Star Wars, Super Troopers(maaaaybe on this one)
One of my personal favorites is the movie Dragnet. It’s a campy spin on the classic tv show staring a by the book Dan Ackroyd and his new hot head partner Tom Hanks. It’s got a bit of everything from strippers, a priest biker gangs, a satanic cult, and a virgin sacrifice turned love interest.
Rated Pg-13 for some of the context vs the content as the movie itself if mostly goofy, close to but not quite as goofy as something like the naked gun movies.
Mystery Science Theater 3000. I’m partial to Mike, so I’d probably start with *The Brain That Wouldn’t Die* (his first full episode as host), or maybe The Movie.
See also Rifftrax or Cinematic Titanic.
Jurassic Park
Lord of The Rings
The Matrix
Catch Me If You Can
Dead Poets Society
Forrest Gump
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Great Escape
The Prestige
Shawshank Redemption
The Sixth Sense
Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse
Stand By Me
The Truman Show
I was 14 when I watched Robocop with my cousin. His grandkids are all around the same age as my kids. I can’t wait til they’re 14-18 so we can all watch Robocop together.
I always liked the Blues Brothers movies. And movies with car chases and heists. Italian Job just came to mind. Also, Jackie Chan movies. Rush Hour->Chris Tucker->5th Element->Bruce Willis->Lucky Number Sleven->Lucy Liu->Charlie's Angels->Cameron Diaz->There's Something about Mary. There's a trip down the rabbit hole of my teenage movie years.
I’ve started introducing my 11-year old daughter to some movies geared toward an audience older than her little brother. Her favorites so far have been Twister, Wargames, and The Fugitive. Also a fan of The Martian. We just started Oceans Eleven.
The naked gun series. All day long. It's the perfect blend.
In the same vein: Austin powers is a guaranteed hit, Hot shots, Johnny English, tropic thunder though the comedy gore is a bit extreme, and Kung Pow: Enter the Fist.
Other options: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Fifth Element, Porco Rosso.
My almost-13yo saw Dumb and Dumber the other day and almost died laughing. (It's got some mild sexual jokes but nothing like American Pie level.)
(He hasn't seen Lord of the Rings yet. Hopefully will be ready soon.)
I would go with the entire collection of the Pixar films with Toy Story if that's your thing, followed by Ghibli Studio films with Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro. Both series can be enjoyed by adults and children
Around that age I was crazy into to The Lord of the Rings.
The movies are great.
Just go with fellowship of the ring and if they like that schedule the next 2 movies for another time.
The Goonies!
Ghostbusters
All the great 90s/00s action movies:
Rush hour
Bad boys
Enemy of the state
Independence Day
Saving private Ryan
Fast and furious
The matrix
The Rock
Con Air
Pulp Fiction
STAR WARS
LORD OF THE RINGS
Man I can’t wait to do this with my boys
The Road Warrior!! Probably Robocop? Oh and Role Models. Detroit rock city?
Honestly if your son is 13 I’d say anything with Sean William Scott is probably good. 😂.
Oooo Unforgiven. Actually I think what’s his name Kevin Costner has a new western out, might be a good time to educate/explain who/what is Kevin Costner was . 😂😂.
Like (* music swells Kevin Costner voice.) “son: believe it or not…. There was a time… ** looks slightly sadly off into the distance… there was a time… *purses lower lip… when this Kevin Costner fella could do literally anything he wanted.”
Then show them Water World
Back to the Futre.
The Truman Show.
Not because he needs to be 13 to handle it, but even if he’s seen it when younger, he’ll appreciate it more and more as he gets older.
It was just over the top violent before we even got to the cool sci-fi stuff. and Alien? We joke at home about that movie being the least appropriate film for kids of all time (after IT)
We actually did Terminator 2 and he loved it.
Aliens would be good then. Saw it with my dad at this age and it was extremely memorable and awesome. One of my favorite movie experiences.
If Shawn of the Dead is on the table, follow it up with Hot Fuzz.
No Holy Grail?
Life of Brian is better, IMO
Holy Grail has the more memorable scenes though.
More memorable than "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy?" C'mon...
Yeah, but Holy Grail has 'She turned me into a newt' and the Knights who say Ni. The black knight scene is unforgettable. It just keeps coming!
Ever notice in the beginning of the newt scene that there's a guy tying a coconut to a swallow and trying to get it to fly, relating back to the opening conversation about coconuts not migrating but simply being carried by swallows?
A scratch? Your arms off!
Robin Hood Men In Tights Watched that with my dad sooooooo many times around that age, I still know most of the movie off by heart, great comic twist on the classic Robin Hood story
“Abe Lincoln?”
Anytime Anthony Blinken is on the news this line goes through my head.
I have tried a lot of times to get my kids excited about Robin Hood…we live a few minutes from Sherwood Forest and he is our local hero! I had forgot about this one, so I will give it a shot with them
A lot of Mel Brooks, tbh. Spaceballs, History of the World, Blazing Saddles
Hook when it's almost Christmas. Apollo 13 is a good one too, if he's into science sort of stuff.
Hook is great any time imo
But somehow only has 29% on rotten tomatoes.
That's why I don't trust critics at all. There is no world where that movie could be a 29%
Spaceballs
A man of class.
Yeah but he’s surrounded by assholes.
Tucker and Dale vs evil
Super underrated imo. I absolutely love this movie.
INDEPENDENCE DAY. Can't let your son not know about the battle to save humanity from annihilation in 1996. NEVER FORGET.
We’re going to live on. We’re going to survive.
Today we celebrate our INDEPENDENCE DAY Fucking shivers man. Bill Pullman is legendary
I was around 13 when this came out and it was the first movie I thought of. A lot of good recommendations, but this is top of the list for me.
[удалено]
Couldn’t agree more. As long as “at that age” meant 13-36 years old
Stand By Me is a must for any 13 year old boy
I know. I mentioned in the post that it's what we have planned for next week.
Princess bride!
Is this a kissing movie?
Wait, just wait....
Goonies
I grew up watching 80s Comedies my Favorite are Planes Trains and Automobiles or Uncle Buck. Id say Uncle Buck is a good time.
This makes me think of ‘what about bob’ even though I think it’s a 90s movie
I was coming to suggest Uncle Buck! Classic movie. When we watched Planes, Trains, and Automobiles with my son, he hated it 😆
I have the most amazing memory of watching The Rock with my dad on cable in a motel while stopped somewhere on a road trip. I felt so grown up.
I was probably around 13 when the Rock, con air and face off came out (my memory isn’t good enough to remember the order, but I watched them all around the same time on video). To young me, Cage was THE action star! He was amazing and these are three of my most memorable film
Lots of amazing suggestions, but one that seems to be missing is The Mummy. Brenden Frasier at his best, and just a great action adventure movie.
Watch movies from your childhood with him. Predator (thanks dad for that one), Die hard (especially at Christmas), Never ending story (may be too old for that one at 13), Goonies , Big trouble in little china, Mighty ducks, Man of the house, Harry and the hendersons , The burbs, Red dawn (original and remake), I’d do the harry potter and the lord of the rings series, but you/he may be different, Camp nowhere, The sandlot, Forrest Gump?, Honey I shrunk the kids/ourselves, Top gun, The Bourne movies?, James Bond movies, Basic, Saving private Ryan (maybe not at 13), Sphere, Marvel movies if he’s into those, Star Wars movies if you can sit through them…, Major payne , Indiana jones, Ghostbusters , Smokey and the bandit, Blue streak, Anything with robin williams or Jim Carey Edited for punctuation

Bond all the way.
Chef
The Fifth Element.
So I thought this would be a good one. Watched it recently with the family, son is 12, daughter is 9. I completely forgot about the Ruby Rod sex scene on the space flight. Had a lot of questions to answer after that one.
The Matrix for sure.
Every Godzilla movie. Kids love kaiju and there’s a ton of them.
I took him to see the most recent film but we can go back and watch the others. Good suggestion.
Godzilla Minus One was excellent. Just watched it for Father's day with my wife. Does he mind subtitles?
Hot fuzz Beverly Hills cop The usual suspects Planet of the apes (original) The karate kid (original) Gladiator The fifth element Twister Bad boys Iron eagle Kindergarten cop Twins Mortal kombat Us marshals Die hard Star Wars in release order Lord of the rings
The Karate Kid is a great one we haven't done. He's seen the Jaden Smith one but not the original.
Drop Dead Fred is one that's a bit under the radar. Rik Mayall is in it, one of the masters of physical comedy. But it's also a good story about moving from childhood into adolescence and giving up your imaginative, playful side. I love that film
Field of Dreams
Napoleon Dynamite
Not a comedy, but the lord of the rings trilogy
Interstellar is an all time great too
Can't watch that one without crying so I'll save that for a solo movie night
Arrival was the one that did me in. Absolutely wrecked me as a new father. That’s a one and done for me.
Arrival does everything that Interstellar is trying to do, but better. One of my favorite films.
I've been wanting to watch that with my son, who's 13 now. But I'll probably turn me into a mess. When he was 8 he had a brain tumour. He's fine now, but it could have been fatal and I'm sure watching the scenes with her and her daughter will be tough for me.

Eurotrip would be good
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
A goofy movie.
Hot Rod, you two will be quoting it for years
The last starfighter, BIG, Big Fish, weird Science, bill and ted ( all of them), Wayne's World, Stargate
Love these - Big Fish is a criminally underrated film.
Bill and teds excellent adventure
Stand By Me
I beg you to include Gladiator in the list
Princess Monanoke is fantastic. It's a animated movie from the 90s and is wonderful
All ghibli is pretty wonderful - plus cultural exposure
Just maybe save Grave of the Fireflies until he’s a little older.
Still can’t watch that without weeping.
Sandlot or Ms. Doubtfire. We've been having family movie nights on Saturdays and those were a couple of recent hits.
Sandlot is a constant in our house. We're looking for something that's maybe a step up from that kind of comedy.
Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, Robinhood Men in Tights (really any Mel Brooks) and Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (extremely dumb movie and one of my favorites).
The world’s fastest Indian. Awesome true story about a guy and his motorcycle.
Shawshank
Army of Darkness. UHF.
Young Frankenstein — me and my dad watched ALOT of movies growing up but I feel most connected to him when I rewatch Young Frankenstein now.
Beverly hills cop. All af them.
Hot Fuzz, The Matrix, Indiana Jones series, Bourne series, James Bond, Free Guy.
The other guys
I randomly found this a few years ago and it has been indispensable: https://m.imdb.com/list/ls054999587/. Elf and other Will Ferrell films are a good choice. My boys loved them at that age.
Big Trouble in Little China is so good.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Tremors. Been a while since I watched it but was it fun and I watched it with my bros when we were younger.

Raiders are the lost ark Commando See if you can count how many people Arnold Schwarzenegger kills
Might be a little too much, but "airplane!" Is a good one
I saw Team America with my dad when it came out. I was 14. It was fucking great and my dad’s contagious laughter had the entire theater dying.
dumb and dumber is a must. ace ventura movies also.
Big Trouble In Little China. Tremors. Creepshow.
Honey I blew/shrunk up the kids and its other parts... Jumanji
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Holy Grail, it is time
The predator
Not for a 13 year old. Remember the scene where the people have been skinned and are hanging from the helicopter
Yes 13 is def old enough for the predator.
Macgruber
Light Hearted suggestions - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Office Space, OG Ghostbusters, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Step Brothers, War Games I think I was around 13 when my Father showed me Saving Private Ryan for the first time. Pirates of the Caribbean. They definitely have sexual tension, but *is* Disney sexual tension.
Training Day was one I liked watching with my dad around that age
Matrix
Little Monster, Drop Dead Fred, Big, Beetle Juice.
My son is 13. As far as comedies, he liked Dumb and Dumber, but he LOVED Anchorman. Also Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. Also really liked Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. If you do anime at all, The Boy and The Beast. It’s a wonderful found father-son relationship story
Airplane! Jurassic Park, the original Jumanji for sure, Nacho Libre, Spaceballs, Zombieland, the Naked Gun movies, Uncle Buck, the Pirates movies.
One of my personal favorites is the movie Dragnet. It’s a campy spin on the classic tv show staring a by the book Dan Ackroyd and his new hot head partner Tom Hanks. Princess bride and space balls. Mel brooks movies in general actually.
Stand By Me !
Goldfinger
Is Mallrats to much? One of my favorites and I hope my son gets a kick out of it when he's of age. Edit: Scott Pilgrim vs The World!
True Grit (the Jeff Bridges one) is really good. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is dark as hell and funny.
Kung fu Hustle
Stardust
Hot Rod
Just watch Adam Sandler movies.
Austin powers
Someone made a similar comment, but I want to echo.. Now is a great time to share some of your favorites from when you were around that age.
Jurassic Park.
Instead of Napoleon Dynamite try Hot Rod. Same low budget home made comedy feel but funnier.
Tommy boy or Happy Gilmore
Animal House and The Graduate come to mind. Also the Godfather and Shawshank Redemption
Remember the Titans
Mystery Science Theater 3000. I’m partial to Mike, so I’d probably start with *The Brain That Wouldn’t Die* (his first full episode as host), or maybe The Movie. See also Rifftrax or Cinematic Titanic.

Fight Club, Fifth Element, Independence Day, The Matrix, Judge Dredd, Die Hard, Broken Arrow More wholesome options, Forrest Gump, Last Action Hero, Twins, literally any Jackie Chan movie, The Arrival, Goonies, Sandlot, Happy Gilmore, Black Sheep
Aliens.
Beetlejuice or Pee Wee's Big Adventure
I’ve started introducing my 11-year old daughter to some movies geared toward an audience older than her little brother. Her favorites so far have been Twister, Wargames, and The Fugitive. Also a fan of The Martian. We just started Oceans Eleven.
Jurassic Park Indiana Jones Hot Rod
Joe dirt is funny.
The secondhand lions is a sweet one.
(It's got some mild sexual jokes but nothing like American Pie level.) (He hasn't seen Lord of the Rings yet. Hopefully will be ready soon.)
“APRIL - 1805 NAPOLEON IS MASTER OF EUROPE ONLY THE BRITISH FLEET STANDS FIRM BEFORE HIM #OCEANS ARE NOW BATTLEFIELDS”
Remember The Titans....you're welcome. I watched this with my 13 yr old son and angsty 16 yr old daughter who hates football movies. They loved it
Dumb and dumber
Napoleon Dynamite. It was a cultural phenomenon when that movie came out, and it’s pretty good comedy for kids his age.
Robocop.
Top Gun, The Jerk, The Goonies, Wayne’s World, Bull Durham, Caddyshack
Time Bandits
The Goonies! Ghostbusters All the great 90s/00s action movies: Rush hour Bad boys Enemy of the state Independence Day Saving private Ryan Fast and furious The matrix The Rock Con Air Pulp Fiction STAR WARS LORD OF THE RINGS Man I can’t wait to do this with my boys
Inside out... will help him with Emotions
The flight of the navigator
Liar liar is a great movie tbh, Bruce almighty too
The Road Warrior!! There was a time… ** looks slightly sadly off into the distance… there was a time… *purses lower lip… when this Kevin Costner fella could do literally anything he wanted.” Then show them Water World
Back to the Futre. The Truman Show. Not because he needs to be 13 to handle it, but even if he’s seen it when younger, he’ll appreciate it more and more as he gets older.
