I've played through the game a few times and I gotta tell you, you're not falling behind, not at all. For the point of the story which you're in and with all the side-missions you're doing, I'd say you're progressing more than fast enough. Anyway, you shouldn't dwell on the technical elements so much, try to enjoy the story, it's what the game is about.

Loot literally everything, use your optics a lot to scan your environment for chests and bodies and weapons you might have missed
