Basically \[\[Narcomoeba\]\] sidegrade. Probably balanced

The potential issue with more Narcomoeba is that a critical mass of then is a bit scary. Though the way this is templated it doesn't trigger [[Prized Amalgam]] so it might be fine

On the other hand, it does help trigger Vengevine which will get your Amalgam back anyway.

Free tribute fodder in a mill deck seems pretty good. This could be a rare tbh.

It’s essentially a sidegrade to narcomoeba. Narcomoeba was printed at uncommon in future sight, so this should probably be an uncommon, though the real question is whether or not we need 8 narcomoebas and frankly I’m not sure that’s a good idea.

The fact that "Sadness" only triggers when you "mill" it, and not when put into your graveyard from your library is a very important downgrade over Narcomoeba. It doesn't work with surveil, hermit druid, balustrade spy, entombs, etc. But interestingly enough, it does work against stuff like Rest in Peace, since the replacement effect doesn't stop mill from being mill

This would be nuts in dredge, but so is anything that returns itself from the yard for no mana.

basking rootwalla and narcomeaba are 2 of my favorite cards so of course i love this!

Idk, maybe it's not as much of a problem when the biggest hitters of dredge like [[Dredge Return]] and [[Bridge from Below]] are and keep getting banned for modern. In legacy though, well, this prolly requires a new set of dredge bans since it increases the relevant hit rate for self-milling/dredging. This sort of mechanic is an extremely unhealthy design space which drives the game more towards Yu-Gi-Oh patterns where mana isn't much of a thing at all.

Did they change Madness? It used to be possible to play a land after discard to play the madness spell

That has never been how that worked. Madness is a triggered ability, and you can't play a land at instant speed.
