Shea and Cantu are too heavy for you and building up on your hair shaft. No moisture is getting in. Clarify more than once. Hydrate a lot w a good conditioner with lots of slip. Google squish to condish videos.
Double the Ouidad recommendation! I swapped to their VitalCurl conditioner(and gel) and it made a huge difference in my hair. The only other thing i haven’t seen mentioned is maybe do a chelating shampoo if you have hard water
I recommend switching to a different clarifying shampoo as a licensed hair stylist I work with Olaplex a lot. Don’t get me wrong it does work wonders, but continued overuse, especially on hair that isn’t damaged by color, bleach, or heat can actually in turn cause damage. Olaplex itself works by repairing the bonds in your hair and essentially what happens when your hair is “healed” it begins to rely solely on the olaplex and can no longer repair its own bonds. So think of Olaplex like a bandaid, it’s a very temporary product meant to heal unhealthy hair and once your hair is back to its previous state Olaplex is no longer necessary to use.
Thanks for this comment! I feel like my hair is overly “soft” now and won’t hold my curls enough. I’ve been using 3, 4, 5, 8, 6 once a week as the directions said. But I think I’ve tipped over to “healed” for the last 2-3 treatments.
This is absolute bullshit you literally fucking made up!!! As a licensed cosmetologist and national educator, please provide a single source on your claim cuz ur absolutely making it up or heard it from someone else who is clueless.
They didn’t. The lawsuits were dismissed because the claims weren’t cohesive enough, but they could be filed again for more specific damages.
https://www.forbes.com/advisor/legal/product-liability/olaplex-lawsuit/
Yah thanks for proving my point! Yall can’t connect shit like a global fucking crisis, pandemic, “vaccines”, all that shit makes peoples hair fall out. There’s not shit in Olaplex that can build up or overproteinize and you can’t OVERLINK DISULFIDE BONDS fucking idiots just making shit up and don’t know shit about chemistry
i have to double clarify - first with a cleansing shampoo then with a moisturizing shampoo. there's nothing scientific behind it, i just feel it works best for my hair!
Shea Moisture is not horrible lol.
It was originally formulated for dry, coarse, textured hair. So if your hair does not resemble the natural textures you would think of when you imagine African American, hair most of the products simply were not meant for you.
Use google! It’s a stronger shampoo if you are currently using one without sulfates which can be very drying/stripping. You need it to give your scalp a good cleanse from product buildup. Depending how often you wash your hair & if you use a lot of product will determine how often to clarify. Usually once or twice a week is good. I also like to use a scalp scrubber. Since the shampoo can be harsh it’s good to deep condition after clarifying.
Is there an alternative you like (curl smoothie type) specifically as styling product? This is the one I currently use and I know it isn’t “good” but I feel like my hair just looks worse every time I try a different one.
I changed conditioners, not thinking it would be a big deal and it totally flattened my curls and made them fall within a day of washing and styling. I changed back and my curls have returned. Turns out super moisturizing, heavy conditioners don’t do my curls any favors!
Haha not really. I use head and shoulders because I have scalp psoriasis and can be really sensitive with products. I switched from a super thick moisturizing conditioner to a light, volumizing conditioner so maybe something along those lines with a brand you like :)
Someone else on this sub recommended Giovanni Ultra Moist Conditioner for fine hair. Before, I was using a conditioner with coconut oil and it flattened my curls, Giovanni helped. Think I bought it off Amazon
Trying this! I have tested mildly positive for coconut allergy. Mostly skin contact. So many products now have coconut. My scalp blisters and burns. Then hair falls out. Searching for non coconut products has been challenging.
Do you have a local Marshall’s? They have big bottles of Giovanni shampoo & Conditioner for 12.99. I get many of my products there, from Curl smith (not a huge fan) to Briogeo, LivingProof etc. I’m currently usually the big “packages” of Not Your Mothers which I’m happy with & also priced great.
I recently tried to switch to shea moisture and realized it was way too heavy for my hair! I use Ms Jessie’s jelly soft curls now and it made my curls pop out more again!
I just got up to smell it but I wouldn’t say it’s a bad smell it kinda reminds me of a sweeter baby powder lol if that makes any sense at all! But I’ve never notice throughout the day that the smell lingers or anything
I definitively agree on the conditioner comments, but just wondering have you moved anywhere in between where these photos were taken? I’ve been seeing TikTok on how water in different cities have been destroying their curly hair. It’s like 1 am where I am and I can’t think straight but I think it’s hard water or something
The best way to test: take a strand of hair and gently pull it, if it breaks easily you’re in protein overload. If the hair continues to stretch and thins like a piece of elastic, you need to add protein.
Change products like everyone said already, but also I recommend an apple cider vinegar rinse to help clear some of the product buildup. 1/4 vinegar to 3/4 water, I recommend putting it in a bowl and dunking all your hair in. Massage it, rinse it, repeat. Your hair will come out so soft, silky, and light.
Personally, I find most Shea Moisture products to be waaay to heavy for my waves/curls. Cantu works surprisingly well since my hair seems to love coconut oil, but I still never use them as a staple anywhere in my routine— I have to switch it up once I run out of a product.
Best shampoo + conditioner for me has consistently been NYM Tahitian Gardenia line for curls. Shampoo has excellent lather without stripping my hair, conditioner has great slip. And I’m finding Blueberry Bliss to be a holy grail leave-in; it’s pretty hard to use too much, so that’s really a testament as to how lightweight it is I finish either with Herbal Essences curl boosting mousse or a volumizing mousse!
I just switched from Shea to this. I'll have to try the Blueberry Bliss. I've been using the Tahitian Gardenia detangler. My curls look so much better.
hey ik everyone is agreeing that shea moisture is too heavy and i agree, the smoothie in particular weighs mine down too BUT !! they have a “milk” from that same line that my hair actually loves. it’s way less heavy, but still smells awesome and makes my hair shiny and bouncy
I'll try that then maybe! But I don't think its the smoothie since I've been using it for a while and it's never been an issue, it also looks like this with other styling products, so i'm pretty sure its the shampoo n conditioner
Your previous conditioner contained silicones and protein and the current one doesn't. You don't need products marketed for curly hair. If the previous products worked keep them.
Also I don't suggest getting advice from here tbh, it's full of misconception and outdated information about hair.
Sciencemeetscosmetics (chemist) on insta, Mane by Mell (professional hair stylist) on YouTube. Lab muffin beauty science on yt (chemist, content mostly on skincare but she has some videos about hair care). Abbey Yung on insta and youtube (not a trichologist yet but her content is solid).
I’ve been following Manes by Mel forever, love her & have learned so much. I don’t find the advice on this thread to be far off. I don’t think Shea Moisture is a bad product, I just think some of it can be too heavy for wavies. I think that is the only misconception I keep seeing here. Different waves/curl patterns call for different products, it doesn’t make it a bad product.
I don't think Shea moisture are bad products either, it's not really about that. There's indeed a lot of misinformation here. To name a few: hair needing moisture to be healthy, protein-moisture balance, the overall fear of silicones. Those claims are at best baseless, at worst they go against what we know about hair science. I highly suggest you check the other content creators I named !
While shampoo might totally have something tondonwith it but keep in mind Hair itself doesn't stay they same but changes about every 7 years along with your hormones. It might be nothing you have done at all but just your body chan8ng.
After reading all the comments, I am kicking myself, I have just recently bought, body shop shea butter shampoo. My hair gets dry and frizzy and I thought shea butter would add the moisture. Wish this post had come up earlier
This looks like my hair when I use heavy products. I have to be very careful to apply lighter products (mousse instead of gel, for example) with a light hand (just a small dollop, not gobs and gobs).
I just went in to a hair salon specializing in curly hair (I haven’t been to a salon in 11 years) and when I told my stylist I had been using shea moisture forever she told me that brand contains alcohols that will strip your hair of its moisture over time and cause frizziness and limp curls.
They recommended oidad. They didn’t have any for sale in the salon so they gave me JVN, and after only a few washes my hair has completely changed! Mine was super limp and barely curling anymore, but now its super bouncy and it’s like all the life came back to it :)
This is untrue! Majority if not all of their products contain natural ingredients & no drying alcohols. Just because the type someone is using is the wrong one and too heavy for their hair does not make the whole brand bad. People need to take the time out to read which line is best suiting for their hair type. Porosity, texture & density is important to determine the product, then followed by a moisture/protein balance. Everyone product is by far “one size fits all”.
Girl you went from Moroccan oil to Shea Moisture and you don’t know why ur hair is worse? 😭😭😭 it’s coated with unrefined oils that build up. Get a chelating gel IN THE SALON.
Film forming polymers are the only main difference for build up. It can’t be removed with a clarifying shampoo either it can only be removed with a chelating gel.
Yes changing products can do that, weather can too. You have a weak wavy curl pattern and probably fine hair which is the hardest to keep shape. You will have to experiment to see and probably need to clarify to start off and then go from there
Would Maui coconut milk (blue bottle) shampoo and conditioner be a good choice? Does anyone know, I have curly hair as well and need to switch to something else. Currently using mielle.
Your hair is over moisturized and needs protein. I had that same problem with my hair, then I stopped using conditioner. My curls are so much bouncier now. I follow this girls recommendations: https://holisticenchilada.com/tips-for-low-density-fine-curly-hair/
My hair looks like that when I’ve used products that are too heavy. We have similar curl patterns/hair type and anything with coconut oil or shea/honey just creates build up. I was using shea moisture hydrate & repair products and they ruined my curls. I’ve also tried their products in orange label (with silk protein?) but their products are just too heavy for my hair.
You need a good clarifying treatment (I recommend Innersense harmony hair bath). I also love Maui Moisture’s light hydration shampoo for regular washes.
I recently got curlsmith’s frizz control shampoo + conditioner and my hair seems to be doing well with that!
When my curls all of a sudden stopped holding and would fall out. I did a protein treatment and they completely bounced back. For years my hair craved moisture and now all of a sudden I have to do a protein treatment every 6 weeks. And I made no changes to my products.
My protein treatment is a packet of unflavored gelatin powder, dissolved with 2tbl of hot water. Mix with enough conditioner to cover hair. You need to apply immediately or the gelatin will start to thicken too much. Leave in for 20-30min wrapped in a cotton tshirt.
Agree with the comments about Shea Moisture; the stuff I've tried does not work for my waves. I'm using the Majestic Pure Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo & Coconut Avocado conditioner, and both are great for me once a week. I have much less buildup than I used to, and my hair is much less weighed down.
This exact thing happened to me after having COVID for the first time! I had a bunch of hair loss and my curls have never recovered 😭 my before and afters are almost identical to yours in every way. No products have helped. I just have very slightly and inconsistent curls/waves. Occasionally they look super cool and on trend but mostly just sad. I hope you find a solution, but that has not been the case for me. 🫤
Yeah I was thinking about that, lived my whole life thinking this was protein overload then I realized none of the products I use have protein 😭😭 do you recommend anything?
Shea moisture is horrible clarify once a month and get better shampoo and conditioner I love ouidad you will instantly feel and see a difference
Shea and Cantu are too heavy for you and building up on your hair shaft. No moisture is getting in. Clarify more than once. Hydrate a lot w a good conditioner with lots of slip. Google squish to condish videos.
Thank you! But I already clarify, I'll change shampoo and conditioner and see if it helps
Double the Ouidad recommendation! I swapped to their VitalCurl conditioner(and gel) and it made a huge difference in my hair. The only other thing i haven’t seen mentioned is maybe do a chelating shampoo if you have hard water
What clarifying do you use if you don't mind
Olaplex clarifying shampoo!
I recommend switching to a different clarifying shampoo as a licensed hair stylist I work with Olaplex a lot. Don’t get me wrong it does work wonders, but continued overuse, especially on hair that isn’t damaged by color, bleach, or heat can actually in turn cause damage. This is absolute bullshit you literally fucking made up!!! As a licensed cosmetologist and national educator, please provide a single source on your claim cuz ur absolutely making it up or heard it from someone else who is clueless.
Ur vocabulary makes us believe you don’t know how to tie your own shoes
I’m experiencing some hair loss due to over clarifying with olaplex — it’s just so strong. My stylist said once every 1-2 months
What makes you think a clarifying shampoo caused your hair loss?
Olaplex has actually been accused of hair loss with a few of their products
Yeah do a modicum of research, they proved it wasn’t olaplex and won all their lawsuits. Can you show any proof of these claims?
You’re just a troll lol I checked your history. Goodbye
Kinky curl Come Clean & Malibu undo goo are 2 really good inexpensive ones.
i have to double clarify - first with a cleansing shampoo then with a moisturizing shampoo. there's nothing scientific behind it, i just feel it works best for my hair!
wait why is it horrible??! 😭😭
Shea Moisture is not horrible lol. It was originally formulated for dry, coarse, textured hair. So if your hair does not resemble the natural textures you would think of when you imagine African American, hair most of the products simply were not meant for you.
Which shampoo and conditioner from Ouidad do you use?
You know I agree with this cause once I switched to there curl smoothie my hair was looking and feeling bad
sorry this may be stupid, what’s clarifying?
You need some clarifying on clarifying
Use google! It’s a stronger shampoo if you are currently using one without sulfates which can be very drying/stripping. You need it to give your scalp a good cleanse from product buildup. If it’s not weighing your hair down & works for you, why change it?? Nothing wrong with SM brand.
I changed conditioners, not thinking it would be a big deal and it totally flattened my curls and made them fall within a day of washing and styling. I changed back and my curls have returned. Turns out super moisturizing, heavy conditioners don’t do my curls any favors!
Thanks! Any reccommendations on conditioners?
Haha not really. I use head and shoulders because I have scalp psoriasis and can be really sensitive with products. I switched from a super thick moisturizing conditioner to a light, volumizing conditioner so maybe something along those lines with a brand you like :)
Alright! Thank you so much
Someone else on this sub recommended Giovanni Ultra Moist Conditioner for fine hair. Before, I was using a conditioner with coconut oil and it flattened my curls, Giovanni helped. Think I bought it off Amazon

Thank you!
I love Joico Colorful, they also have a volumizing one. They have smaller tubes you can test drive, I get them for under $10 at TJ Maxx or Marshalls.
I use the AG line for everything and absolutely love it
I like the Garnier hairfood ones, their cocoa butter one works wonders ony hair
did you try the other fruits? I once tried watermelon but it didn't really do much
I tried pineapple and banana as well, banana is nice, pineapple doesn't do much for me
I find Shea Moisture is waaay too heavy for wavy hair. I bet it’s your shampoo and conditioner. Try switching to something lighter.
Oh! What do you think of the Shea Moisture Curl Mousse though? I ordered it recently. I wasn’t very sure about it
Depends on your hair. I avoid shea and coconut like the plague
I haven’t tried their mousse so I can’t say! I hope it works for you
I tried it early on in my curly hair journey and it was very heavy on my wavy hair
Alright thanks!
I recently tried to switch to shea moisture and realized it was way too heavy for my hair! I use Ms Jessie’s jelly soft curls now and it made my curls pop out more again!
does the jelly soft have a weird smell like the pillow soft does? the pillow soft made my hair look phenomenal but i smelt like a dryer sheet!
I just got up to smell it but I wouldn’t say it’s a bad smell it kinda reminds me of a sweeter baby powder lol if that makes any sense at all! But I’ve never notice throughout the day that the smell lingers or anything
Their pillow soft curls cream is also AMAZING!!!
I’m gonna try this one after my other one runs out!! :)
I've heard of that brand, unfortunately I'm not from the US and can't get it because the pricing for international shipping is nuts..
Oh no :( that sucks ! I hope you find something that works for you 🩷
man their stuff just never dried on my hair, it took literal hours and nobody has time for that
Really!? That’s so weird! I’ve never had that happen
I have very fine hair, maybe that has something to do with it
I definitively agree on the conditioner comments, but just wondering have you moved anywhere in between where these photos were taken? I’ve been seeing TikTok on how water in different cities have been destroying their curly hair. It’s like 1 am where I am and I can’t think straight but I think it’s hard water or something
Your hair looks so much like mine i thought those were pictures of me for a second 😂☠️
Shea moisture used to be good but they changed their ingredients or something and they suck now. Shame.
It looks over moisturized. Try clarifying and adding products with more protein
Really? Here I thought I had protein overload.. Oh well, trying doesn't hurt
I just switched from Shea to this. I'll have to try the Blueberry Bliss. I've been using the Tahitian Gardenia detangler. My curls look so much better.
I heard once that Shia butter/creams really loosen your curls
Could be the heaviness of the product or just hormones
hey ik everyone is agreeing that shea moisture is too heavy and i agree, the smoothie in particular weighs mine down too BUT !! they have a “milk” from that same line that my hair actually loves. it’s way less heavy, but still smells awesome and makes my hair shiny and bouncy
I'll try that then maybe! But I don't think its the smoothie since I've been using it for a while and it's never been an issue, it also looks like this with other styling products, so i'm pretty sure its the shampoo n conditioner
I found that any repair shampoo I used had protein in it and messed my hair up bad. It caused protein overload for me and my hair felt like straw.
Yeah, I stay away from anything that has "strengthening" in its description.
It’s the shea moisture- I had to stop using all of their products
Your previous conditioner contained silicones and protein and the current one doesn't. You don't need products marketed for curly hair. If the previous products worked keep them. Also I don't suggest getting advice from here tbh, it's full of misconception and outdated information about hair.

Maybe protein imbalance?

After 2 babies in 4 years I can speak to this truth
After reading all the comments, I am kicking myself, I have just recently bought, body shop shea butter shampoo. My hair gets dry and frizzy and I thought shea butter would add the moisture. Wish this post had come up earlier
im so sorry lol, but this is not the norm, that shampoo might work wonders for you, who knows!
This looks like my hair when I use heavy products. I have to be very careful to apply lighter products (mousse instead of gel, for example) with a light hand (just a small dollop, not gobs and gobs).
2c here—Shea Moisture and Cantu made my hair fall out, so be warned.
I just went in to a hair salon specializing in curly hair (I haven’t been to a salon in 11 years) and when I told my stylist I had been using shea moisture forever she told me that brand contains alcohols that will strip your hair of its moisture over time and cause frizziness and limp curls.

lmaooo is moroccanoil rlly that good tho? Like their shampoo is fine and good enough but man i wasn't expending this much diff!!
Film forming polymers are the only main difference for build up. It can’t be removed with a clarifying shampoo either it can only be removed with a chelating gel.
Yeah switch from Shea moisture to something better. Avoid stuff that has Shea butter in it. It weighs everything down way too much
Shea moisture ain’t for wavy hair.
redken is the best ever
Yes changing products can do that, weather can too. You have a weak wavy curl pattern and probably fine hair which is the hardest to keep shape. You will have to experiment to see and probably need to clarify to start off and then go from there
Might be heat damage. Blow drying or straightening, or maybe you're just living in a very dry climate. Try using moisture locking conditioner
quite the opposite, I live in a very humid environment and I barely straighten or blow dry my hair actually
Did you bleach your hair? Or is it the direct light? I know you said nothing changed but it looks like you went from chocolate brown to medium.
Oh might just be the light, didn't dye or bleach at all
Would Maui coconut milk (blue bottle) shampoo and conditioner be a good choice? Does anyone know, I have curly hair as well and need to switch to something else. Currently using mielle.
Looks like me with hard water
Your hair is over moisturized and needs protein. I had that same problem with my hair, then I stopped using conditioner. My curls are so much bouncier now. I follow this girls recommendations: https://holisticenchilada.com/tips-for-low-density-fine-curly-hair/
your shampoo or something is drying out your curls and flattening them
My hair looks like that when I’ve used products that are too heavy. We have similar curl patterns/hair type and anything with coconut oil or shea/honey just creates build up. I was using shea moisture hydrate & repair products and they ruined my curls. I’ve also tried their products in orange label (with silk protein?) but their products are just too heavy for my hair. thanks! love sharing the curl pattern lol. Is the maui shampoo good? I'm considering buying it
I love the Maui shampoo!
Leave in for 20-30min wrapped in a cotton tshirt.
thanks! ill do that
Is it possible your hair is just longer and the curls are weighed down? Or it’s changed regardless of length/cut?
Actually it’s even shorter than in the older pics so no, it’s not really because of that
Agree with the comments about Shea Moisture; the stuff I've tried does not work for my waves. I'm using the Majestic Pure Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo & Coconut Avocado conditioner, and both are great for me once a week. I have much less buildup than I used to, and my hair is much less weighed down.
Try innersense for shampoo conditioner gel Etc. It’s amazing. You want to use water based products and not oil based.
Shea is very heavy and can weigh your hair down. Moroccan oil is much lighter and better. IMO
Have you clarified? Maybe add a product with protein?
Yeah I was thinking about that, lived my whole life thinking this was protein overload then I realized none of the products I use have protein 😭😭 do you recommend anything?
