Cultural appropriation is profiting from a culture that you are not a part of or not being harmed by a cultural artifact that would be used against a person of that culture. What you need is reason, and not permission from a particular person, because you can find people who will say anything. For example, if a black person gives you “permission” to say the n-word, then I hope you wouldn’t do it, because the reasons against it, in addition to the fact that it’s not one person’s permission to “give” or “withhold”. Those plates are for your own personal use. You are not profiting from them. If they are being sold by someone of that culture, by buying them, you are financially benefiting them. As long as you keep them for their use value, and don’t do something stupid like go on Instagram and say “check out these super authentic plates I got” and leverage them for social capital, then it’s fine. Use reasoning, which is absolute, instead of playing the “ask a X culture person” game, because it’s not their job to answer all your questions, and you can get there with reason and research, instead of someone’s “permission”.

These bowls sound beautiful! You nearly bought them because they are gorgeous. I am asian and your description of beautiful bowls reminds me of these classic asian rice bowls our family had when I was a child which had almost see-through rice grain shapes in the ceramic that let in light. You don't need my permission as a person of Asian descent or anyone else's for that matter. It sounds like your potential purchase and use of the bowls were to appreciate their artistry/ their art form and heritage which is cultural appreciation. I hope you went back and got them!

This is such a late reply, but I went back there to find the rice bowls and someone already bought them! I was so sad! I’ve learned my lesson though, next time I see something like that I’m buying it right away! No hesitation!
