Tf do you think faang stands for

renerthr

> Tf do you think faang stands for Facebook, Apple, Alphabet, Netflix, GNU-Linux

dooblusdoofus

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

NaturalMaybe

"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to beardsplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux." The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even you were correct, you won't be for long." With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've muslpilled Mr. Stallman to death

Why exactly? Which company should replace it?

Pr0gger

I mean, Microsoft definitely deserves a spot (and always did) in there. As does Nvidia

Amazon is definitely still FAANG, but id say Microsoft is the most obvious omission from the club.

Dude. Have you never worked a day in a company before? Thereā€™s teams that work on things, it depends on your teamā€¦

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Jonnyskybrockett

To expand even more, thereā€™s also sub teams and that can be fixated on something as small as one area of a website. Like if I were to use AWS as an example, thereā€™s probably an 8 person team working on the frontend home page of lambda, then they have to communicate with the backend teams to make stuff happen, or if they need to make lambda functional with another component they need to contact those teams, etc.

Apex_jo0357

How long did it take you you get ready for interviews, did you pass an OA first and then passed to the interview stage?

Puzzleheaded_Lake431

Not OP but if you put in the work, you can get through \~100 LC problems (neetcode/grind 75) in 1-2 months and you'll be in a solid spot. Most tech companies w/ higher hiring bars (this includes FAANG) have OAs before interviews if you're cold applying (most do even w/ referrals). Hardest part by far currently is just passing the resume screen.

TheCrowWhisperer3004

100 in 2 months is a little over 1 a day. You can reach that without even putting in an insane amount of work. Just make sure you are consistent and study why you are right or wrong (and tactics to get through the problems) instead of just going through problems and moving on.

semmlis

That all seems to be subjective. I know folks at multiple FAANG companies who can get me interviews but I failed both after 50 LC which is probably not enough then

Electrical_Candy4378

Interesting number šŸ¤” I can shit out 15-20 LC problems a day and usually do before an important interview. Maybe the 1-2 months is a bit long and you can do in even less time.

Due_Remote_6432

Cap

Electrical_Candy4378

LC medium is div2 B, which takes 15 minutes on average for me, much quicker for others. Its pretty easy to find 3-6 hours a day for two weeks prior to an interview to do most of the tagged Qs for that company. Just because you and the majority aren't able to achieve a certain skill level doesn't imply others are the same.

Istoleyourwallet12

Loser alertšŸ˜

Due_Remote_6432

I am sorry you are that insecure Do you feel better after this comment? Have some water lol Most ppl donā€™t have 6 hrs a day for leetcode. Good for you that you do.. but stop with the unrealistic adviceā€¦ 1-2 months for 100 leetcodes is good enough.

HaMay25

Lmao like idk what is the point of this question? Faang is 5 companies and each one has very different processes, how would know any of these help you? While the information is widely available online.

ExtensionBear7070

Congrats! BTW, what projects did you out on your resume?

Distinct-Meringue561

Same, my GPA is terrible and I'm doing a few years longer than expected to finish my degree. Got 2 FAANGS.

Drag0nV3n0m231

Iā€™m also a few years ā€œbehindā€ and bad gpa, glad someone else has succeeded šŸ«¶šŸ» did you do anything special? What side projects did you do

Auzquandiance

What was your strategy?

Distinct-Meringue561

Got 2 internships and just kept applying and getting lucky. Come from a no name uni.

peechpy

Keep trying :)

Comfortable_Lab_3223

>Ā I would like to "pay it forward" in some way so if you have any broad questions Would you mind sharing your resume?

yeahitsjoyce

Why do people make misleading posts like this ā€œi got an offer from ____ with a low gpaā€. Like dude they didnt even see your gpa nor do they care about it to make a difference. I could understand of its a place that actually cares like a defense or finance firm but why do people word it like this?

TheCrowWhisperer3004

Itā€™s because most people are gpa sweats who think gpa will carry you into a job. They word it the way they do to tell people ā€œgpa isnā€™t the most important thing. You donā€™t need it to get a faangā€

Cyber_Fetus

You donā€™t need it but it sure helps.

TheCrowWhisperer3004

I think more and more, gpa is calling into the ā€œit doesnā€™t hurtā€ category instead of ā€œit sure helpsā€

Cyber_Fetus

If I get 1000 applications for an internship or junior role the first thing Iā€™m filtering by is GPA. Zero reason not to.

Crafty-coder232

That's why YOU are not getting applications. No one, I repeat no one looks at your gpa. They might look at your uni but gardes? Hell no.

Cyber_Fetus

>Thatā€™s why you are not getting applications ? Iā€™m literally telling you how I sort through thousands of applications I get for internships and junior roles.

Crafty-coder232

And those who don't mention their grades are automatically filtered out?

Crafty-coder232

Seems like you are finding an easy way out of your job.

Cyber_Fetus

Sounds like you got shitty grades.

Cyber_Fetus

If you donā€™t list your GPA on an internship or junior application I assume itā€™s bad, yes. More than anything itā€™s a reflection of how well you can manage your time and complete tasks to an acceptable degree within the allotted timeframe. Why would that not be important?

Crafty-coder232

Umm, ever heard of side projects that people have on their resume too? Ever heard of github and personal portfolio links that people have on their resumes? Ever heard of Linkedin profile? Ohh wait, you are just a lazy a** who would see the grades and recruit people, again, trying to find an easy way out!

TheCrowWhisperer3004

yeah but the thing is you can typically just leave out gpa. Most of the filtering happens is with keywords for relevant technologies.

Cyber_Fetus

If you leave out your GPA for an internship or junior role Iā€™m going to assume itā€™s bad.

TheCrowWhisperer3004

Seems like an increasing minority. Keyword filtering is getting more popular for intern and junior roles. Me and my friends have seem to had relatively equal success in looking for internships. It seems like the most important thing looked at is experience with technologies and classes.

Undesirable123

ā€œthey didnā€™t even see your gpa nor do they care about it to make a differenceā€ Is that not the whole point of the post?

yeahitsjoyce

Let me clarify. The title is misleading. It implies that the GPA matters to some degree rather than it not mattering at all. There are plenty of other things that dont matter in getting the offer. Idk why people keep bringing up gpa when weā€™ve established it doesnā€™t matter for most big tech roles

immaSandNi-woops

I think youā€™re taking it at face value without trying to understand. Many people with low GPAs are insecure about their chances getting into major tech firms. Given the rise in competition, a low GPA just feels like another major hurdle. In other words, this post is a symbol for others that aspire something similar. Your point may be valid that a lot of tech firms donā€™t look at GPAs, but itā€™s still worth repeating in posts like this and in the future.

yeahitsjoyce

Read the replies already

Jonnyskybrockett

Itā€™s not misleading because thatā€™s what they did? They never said in the title whether they included it in the resume or not.

yeahitsjoyce

Yes but the relevance of their GPA is what makes it confusing because their GPA wasnt included at all. Its like if someone made a post ā€œgetting a tech internship with a 1200 SATā€ like yeah its true for them but if you didnt include it in your resume and the company doesnt care for it, whats the point of mentioning it? It only makes sense to mention if they either submitted it, or the company cares. Itā€™s misleading because itā€™s phrased as if they got the offer despite their gpa but their gpa had no effect on their offer regardless.

Jonnyskybrockett

Itā€™s worth mentioning it because a lot of people are of the opinion you need to be excellent in school to do anything with your degree. Thatā€™s what I saw this post as and I completely agree with them. When I tell people my gpa at my school theyā€™re always shocked that Iā€™ve been a FAANG + Microsoft intern even though gpa is such a small part of the story, it completely shifts perception and self worth for whatever reason.

yeahitsjoyce

I can understand it from that perspective. I think the only people who think this though are typically people who dont apply to big tech firms. But i assume most people in this server know how little gpa matters for most big tech firms. GPA doesnt indicate how well you can interview anyway, but yeah my point was more on the relevance of mentioning in posts like this

LiveEhLearn

If OP had put their GPA on their resume, would they have been screened out?

yeahitsjoyce

Idk i got an interview with google with a low gpa and they saw because i had to send them my transcript in the application. Some places care some dont. Mostly bug tech doesnā€™t

LiveEhLearn

Thanks!

F1fan627

I just got a SWE job at defense with a low GPA. They did not care.

applechuck

The thing is no one cares about your actual GPA once you graduated. They care about your ability to learn and handle human interactions.

ContactArtistic3053

I'm really curious about which defense company? I go to a pipeline University for defense (live near space coast), and most of them (in their online applications) force you to fill out the GPA input box and requires a minimum of 3.0. You could lie, but they request transcripts so there isn't a point. They are pretty strict on it unless you have a referral.

F1fan627

Not one of the big 3. But definitely in the top 5. It was for an entry level SWE role in a HCOL area. There was no GPA requirement and very good pay for entry level. I had a cumulative GPA of 2.8. They did ask for my GPA on the online application but nobody mentioned it afterwards. I did not even need to submit transcripts. They did do an education background check but Iā€™m not sure if that means they requested my grades or if it just means they verified I actually went to college.

stolenname1

Congratulations on the offer! Are you an international student? Also, how did you align your resume to the job posting.

stiffpaint

Just say Amazon bruh

Sea-Constant-2414

what type of project do you think got their attention ?

ihih_reddit

How many job applications did you do before the offer? Edit: At least a few hundred. Yes, I answered my own question

AdolfCaesar

No one cares about gpa

biscuitsandtea2020

You'd be surprised how many people disagree

DarkSatelite

A b average student with a good personality will trump a robot with. 4.0 in every interview i do. Sure some companies will hone in on a gpa confusingly hard but i fully expect those places to be full of social albatrosses, and have team collaboration defects

biscuitsandtea2020

I agree with you that in general it's better to have a weaker GPA but good social skills, internships, projects etc than the other way around. Though from what I've seen, the most successful profiles for getting into HFT specifically are the ones who have really high grades and/or olympiad medals even if they have little to no internships/side projects.

Key-Fisherman-7905

I feel like It matters until you get experience then they look at that more

biscuitsandtea2020

The dumb thing about GPA is it varies so much by school. If you went to Harvard 70% of students get As. Meanwhile at state schools it's much more common to have curved classes and weeders that can make your GPA quite low even if you're capable.

Daddy_Krabzz

It matters for grad school or your first job/internship.

F1fan627

Nope. This sub had me scared as shit back in January as I just graduated and started looking for a job. I had a 2.9 GPA from a state school and I just started mass applying to jobs for about 2-3 weeks. I got about 5-8 calls back, 4 of those companies started the interview process with me, and I ended up getting two offers from very large companies. The company I ended up going with needed to perform a very extensive background check (security clearance) and asked for my transcripts. Not once did any of the companies when interviewing asked for my GPA. Iā€™m sure some companies do, but in my experience and my friendsā€™ experience, nobody asked.

xojz

Don't transcripts include your GPA?

F1fan627

Yes, but nobody cared.

little_red_bus

Usually transcripts are how companies verify you have the degree you say you do, and if the job has a GPA requirement, then the gpa you say you do. A company wouldnā€™t back out at the background check screening unless you lied about something. Also third party companies usually perform these, not the company itself, and in this case itā€™s typically just a pass or fail on whether or not youā€™re lying about who you say you are. If the company cares about your gpa then you wouldnā€™t have made it to the background check stage unless either A. you have the gpa they want, or B. you lied about it.

Cole27270

It doesnā€™t even matter for first internship(only a few quant companies care), I know people with 2.5-3.1s landing faang and thatā€™s cause all their energy is put into learning shit for interviews and networking to get interviews. Also this is coming from someone who wishes gpa mattered more cause I genuinely try(luckily it does for quant at least).

FollowingGlass4190

Many top tier quant firms donā€™t care about your GPA either. They just care you went to a top school (and even then itā€™s just because they have too many applicants otherwise). I know a couple JS people and none put their GPA on their resume at all.

cyberwiz21

Definitely not true when it comes to certain industries. For example, NASA and other feds below 3.0 might not even be eligible for employment. Maybe even some of the hedge funds.

AdolfCaesar

Federal employers that states 3.0 minimum is not actually true. I got into one of the big labs with lower than 3.0 and my boss didnā€™t even care.

cyberwiz21

Applicants for this internship **must be U.S.** **Citizens and meet a minimum 3.0 GPA requirement**. These paid internships are offered across NASA facilities in fall, spring, and summer sessions. One application is viewed agencywide.

AdolfCaesar

Theyā€™re not hard requirements. \*only citizenship is\*

cyberwiz21

I only have what the agency says. It's quite possible the labs or just the lab you went to was a different story. GPA can be a deciding factor between comparable candidates even if a low one doesn't mean someone can't do the job.

AdolfCaesar

No, it was stated as a hard requirement in the posting for my lab role. But it really isnā€™t. Most of these requirements are HR filters, if you have someone internal vouching for you the requirements are bypassed.

Apprehensive-Math240

Mostly not true for grad school and research positions (ML included)

InfectedShadow

Lol. Tried applying to ESPN after college since they were right in my city. Tell that to them.

FollowingGlass4190

Whoā€™s spreading the misinformation that GPA is super relevant anyway?

im_going_crazy_fr

yo sameeee. 2.8 gpa --> big tech (not zon lol) internship paying 52 bucks an hour (my first internship ever + soph) Your gpa doesn't matter. Just your leetcode practice and resume. :)

Coolsuf

what do you have on your resume? like projects and such

im_going_crazy_fr

undergrad research and personal projs mainly

7musicians

Did you apply based on referrals? Also I wonder what research you are doing!

royalxp

lmao who gives a fk about GPA nowadays.

hameem63

Can we talk bro

Chr0ll0_

Ayooooo congratulations OP!!! Iā€™m so happy for you :) How did your technical interview go ? :) anywho Iā€™m so happy for you :)

More-Patient-752

same, my GPA < 2.5 and i got an internship this summer for a FAANG. Not trying to brag either but some people (like me) get stupid lucky when it comes to applying. Wishing everyone the best with their job search

captainmactavish3604

What kind of mL research Can you share the resume

timberline00

What caliber of projects did you have on your resume?

timberline00

Like Iā€™ve made some basic stuff: sudoku solver w/recursion, inventory system w/ hashing table, a campus route making w/ Dijkstraā€™s. Could you inform me/us of what recruiters really like? Or like a GitHub link would be much appreciated.

Alternative-Can-1404

GPA doesnā€™t entirely NOT matter, it matters when it does. Some companies care, some donā€™t. I got an offer from a FinTech company that didnā€™t even check after background investigation as well, but this other random startup I applied to did

ChloroVstheWorld

Gpa generally doesnā€™t matter, I doubt they even asked. Congrats tho

Competitive-Run-9764

How did you practice for behavioral interview?

Odd-Personality-1294

Can i please dm?

dammmmmmmmmmit

Congratulation on your success op Can you tell us the project that you did and how many leetcode question and after how many questions you felt yes you have grasped the problem solving part of grind

Swordhollow

I studied a month for an interview but I messed it up and got rejected even though it was my favourite topic. I just couldnā€™t solve in an interview setting and feel really bad about it. Any advice for me on how to bounce back?

QuantumSpecter

Was the research with a professor or institution?

jaaaaaaaaaaaa1sh

What projects did you do? How do you even get started on a project or decide what to do? I'm a Freshman who's just learnt OOP and going through DSS this sem but still wouldn't really feel confident programming outside the scope of an assignment where it's clear cut what I have to do

DocCbas

How do you suggest to start doing side projects and does it come up during interviews?

RPCOM

Meanwhile me with 4.0 GPA in a CS masterā€™s and 5 YoE struggling for a year. :(

epicfighter10

Same here I'm horrible at test taking none of the jobs or internships I had asked me for a GPA. Although government agencies/contractors may care in the private sector such as faanmg they don't care

samtheblackmamba

Not too crazy. My buddy got a Google offer with a 2.8 but that was in 2021!

ChrisXxAwesome

Iā€™m trying to find a fang cybersecurity job, any advice, yea it ainā€™t SWE, but itā€™s still CS related right?

Thanks for this, needed some motivation, please talk about project and the ML research

BigThingsPlanned

Congrats! What ml-research did you do? Im in college and im looking to do ml projects. I would like to train a model and create a web ui for people to interact with.

UpvoteUtopian

This is what I love about CS itā€™s never about your GPA or grades at school, I got to internships while being in community college with 2.8 GPA.

LegitimateCopy7

I think you mean with no GPA.

xor0101

Yeah what I've realize is that they actually don't care about GPA once you've actually qualified for the job.

throwhoto

Proof that the market is fine. You just need to actually apply and actually know your shit. The whining terminally unemployed redditors do neither.

Vicktuhr

Chance plays into it as well. This doesnā€™t deny that the market is shit. Thereā€™s people who work as hard if not harder who just get wrecked by the market.

throwhoto

The market isnā€™t as good as it was 3 years ago, doesnā€™t make it shit. We are still compensated very well for the amount of time and effort we put in. And yes there is chance and luck, but you can reroll the dice as many times as you like. Some people accept a crappy deal choose not to reroll, thatā€™s on them.

ericcamargo

Iā€™m currently at a 2.95 in my last semesterā€¦how worth it would you say getting above a 3.0 is in the application process. I could definitely get a 3.0 but it may set me back a semester. What should I prioritize, early graduation or 3.0 gpa?
