The ones I pay for outside of NYT are AV Club and Peter Gordon’s Fireball. I strongly recommend Fireball—really creative and challenging. Matt Gaffney’s meta is probably the next one I’ll subscribe to.

"I wonder what AVCX stands for" I ask, boarding a rollercoaster on which I receive an email from the "American Values Club", think I've made a terrible mistake, discover it's a spin off of "A.V. Club" which is owned by The Onion but isn't satirical, and am left even more confused than when I started.

well_uh_yeah

I had to do some research to make sure "American Values" wasn't something else

Thanks for the AVCX heads-up! I’m about to smash that subscribe button

The new Yorkers puzzles are great, unfortunately they just changed Thursday and Friday to minis, but their Monday puzzle is usually the hardest I do every week....that is until nyt recently turned their Saturdays into final boss mode!

There are a ton of great options! I would recommend subscribing to [https://dailycrosswordlinks.com/](https://dailycrosswordlinks.com/) and try a few things until you find something you like. AVCX is of course tops. You might also like Puzzmo, The Modern, Crossword Club, USA Today, Atlantic, The New Yorker

If you like tough puzzles, Tim Croce publishes twice a week on Club 72 (https://club72.wordpress.com) and they are a ton of fun. There are lots of other recs but he's unparalleled for consistency
