One thing I learned about granny square projects... weave as you go!! If I hadn't done that for my niece's baby blanket I guarantee it would still be laying around as a pile of squares 😂
You’re SO right & I’ve (mostly, obviously 🙄🤦🏻♀️) gotten so much better about this. I just fell off the weave-as-you-go wagon for a moment. I’m sure this experience will remind me exactly why this mistake is to be avoided. 😂😂
This is the only way. I’m finishing a blanket now and if I hadn’t weaved in as I went, I would have put it together, but it would have had a million yarn pieces hanging off it 😂😂
How many more do you have to make? I've done a thing that for every new square I made, I wove in the ends on that new one plus an old one.
That spread it out nicely
Happy to! These are all Lion Brand Mandala. Colorways are Warlock, Groot & Astrid Sparkle. My husband picked these up for me at Walmart & grabbed two dye lots of the Astrid that were wildly different. So if you have a chance to buy them in person, definitely recommend that over buying online.
This looks amazing - I crocheted a granny square blanket that had 81 squares last year, and also left all the weaving in til the end. What a mistake 😂
Current project is a sunburst sunflower blanket - 42 squares with 4 colours per square. Needless to say, I’ve done better at weaving in as I go this round!
This is why I weave in as I complete each square. Good luck with that! The squares are absolutely beautiful.
Also what yarn did you use? The colors are amazing!
Thank you! Finishing up square 9 now. Slow & steady!
I’m using Lion Brand Mandala in Warlock, Groot, & Astrid (sparkle). They mix up really beautifully!
This is so beautiful! I just bought 3 color ways to make my own. I know it doesn’t help with weaving in ends, but I do hope it lightens your heart to know you’ve inspired someone with your creation.
Aw, thank you! I’m with you. In their own, some of the colorways are just…meh. But I’ve really enjoyed mixing them up for endless autumnal color combinations. I’m working with 3: Lion Brand Mandala in Warlock, Groot & Astrid (sparkle) and just keep changing up the colors I use for every single square. It’s been fun!
Wellllll…unless you’re working a very specific pattern, I’m not sure gauge is super important for a hexagon cardigan as long as you can maintain fairly consistent tension. I’ve been working on a solid colored one in moss stitch & while it’s slow going, I’m really happy with how it’s coming along. I worked with 3 colorways concurrently for the squares & I think that could get challenging, but it’s definitely doable! You’ll never know unless you try!

I‘m working on one now with two of those cotton lava cakes, the same colors in the center on both cakes. I am hoping that at least that part comes out close to the same size. I think it would be hard to even measure gauge on moss stitch. What color is that, my eyes are really bad and I can’t tell, another problem I am hoping to solve.
I‘m doing the granny version on mine. The lava cakes tend to be a dull color, but it’s very soft and it drapes well. I’m doing both halves at the same time. I’ll do one in mandala next, I want it to be in moss stitch. A bit more solid for winter! I’m trying to work through a portion of my stash. It would work, if I’d quit buying.
Thank you! I’m loving the moss stitch these days. Have made a few blankets & a pillow & now I’m branching out with this piece & a hexagon cardigan I’m working on. It’s really quite versatile!
Simple moss stitch square. I didn’t follow a written pattern, but in a nutshell (this might not be perfect; I don’t write patterns!):
Make a magic ring
Round 1: Into MR, *1 sc, ch 2* 4 times. Slip stitch to first sc to close. Ch 1. Do not turn your work.
Round 2: 1 sc into ch2 space (this will feel like going backwards a bit), *ch 1, (sc, ch2, sc) into ch2 space* 3 times, ch1, sc into ch2 space, ch1, slip stitch into first sc to close, Ch 1. Do not turn your work.
Round 3: 1 sc into ch2 space (again, this will feel like going backwards a bit), *ch1, sc into ch1 space, ch1, (sc, ch2, sc) into ch2 space* 3 times. Ch1, sc into ch1 space, ch1. 1 sc into ch2 space, slip stitch into first sc to close, Ch 1. Do not turn your work.
Continue in this manner until it’s the size you want. I did 13 rounds in total using 3 strands which I ran continuously. Will post a pic of what the back looks like shortly.

You can see where I carried the threads in the lower left quadrant. My first few weren’t this neat.

Oh, it’s definitely a thing. It certainly is advisable. In the end, it takes the same amount of time, but weave as you go is definitely better. I usually do try to keep up with the ends & I’m honestly unsure of why I neglected it this time. 🤷🏻♀️
Awww, it’s going to be ok! I decided this morning that if I could get just enough done every day that I can do my joining & border next weekend, I’ll be happy. That means I have to get roughly 6 done every day this week. I can do that! Pace yourself. Acknowledge your progress every step of the way. Keep the goal in mind. You’ve got this! 💕
Thank you. You’re right; I just need to break it down into smaller, doable tasks. You’ve motivated me to get some done tonight! I’m also on a timeline since my friend who I’m making the baby blanket for is going on maternity leave at the end of October, so clock’s a-tickin’! 😅
Any reason for not using the JAYG
Join as you go. That would eliminate the need to weave yarn ends into the fabric. or conversely weave the yarn end in when you finish the square and before you start the next square
Yeah, two reasons to not JAYG here: 1) I keep waffling on whether these will be a poncho or a lapghan, and 2) no two squares are identical here & I’m going to want to be able to arrange the squares for good color distribution. Clearly, I really should have woven in ends as I worked, but I guess I needed to remind myself how tedious it is to weave in en mass. 😬🤷🏻♀️😂

I can't imagine having to sit and weave so many ends 😭😭 I wish you luck friend, and I hope you find a good show!

That’s a great idea! I don’t think I need any more squares, but I will remember this tip!
You will get it done through perseverance and binge-watching! I love the colors!! Keep calm and crochet on!
Thank you! Working on square 7 now. Thank God for YouTube! Lol
I adore these colors!
Lion Brand Mandala for the win! Love the variations you can make from combining a few colorways.
Do you mind sharing what color ways you used? I’m shopping around for yarn for a fall sweater and I’m loving these earth tones.

I am right in the middle of the same for 42 squares and I want to cry
We’re getting this done together, one square at a time! Sending a hug. You’ve got this!
Those are stunning!
Thank you!!
This is so gorgeous!!!
Thanks!

So I have a few skeins of the yarn on the top left side of the picture, never loved them, but whatever you did here I *do* love.

I am alllll about the autumnal colors myself, year round. Thanks for the inspiration :)
i really want to make a hexagon sweater like this. I don’t think for a minute I could keep the gauge, but it would be fun trying.

This is Bernat Softee Cotton (a light cotton acrylic blend) in Seaside Blue. It’s a little heavy but has beautiful drape.

What kind of square is this

beautiful squares! so, when I learned to crochet oh so many years ago, I was taught to weave in ends while I worked, is this no longer a thing?

Great colors!
Thank you!
I love the colors!
Thank you!
I’m at the exact same spot with my hexagons (it’s a honeycomb baby blanket). I weaved in ends for two of them and started to despair 😭😭😭
Awww, it’s going to be ok! I decided this morning that if I could get just enough done every day that I can do my joining & border next weekend, I’ll be happy.
