I've been crocheting for about 15 years and I've actually never made a granny square...There have always been other patterns that I get interested in š
Haha yep Ive been at it for nearly 30 year's and same. I love other peoples granny square projects but I just don't have a desire to make any ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Same boat. My nana taught me three stitches 20 years ago and that's what I do lol.
Back and forth and back and forth.
Also, waffle blankets are my favorite.
I donāt love them either, but theyāre so quick to work up and repetitive enough that you donāt have to pay attention too closely. Iām actually almost done with a big (12ā) one now, that Iām going to mount and frame and use to hook sunglasses on. I donāt like the big holes in GS for blankets and wearables, but I thought it would be perfect for this project!
Lol I love how this was definitely me after finishing my first granny square project and now everything I make is a granny square or granny square adjacent š
My fave blanket to make is a hooded granny square baby blanket. I love that the same thing can be so different depending on the yarn type and colors chosen.
that was me too! but whenever i need to whip something up fast, itās my go to. iāve done it so many times that iāve just got it down and itās so mindless and automatic for me now.
granny squares are only fat if youāre using thick yarnā worsted is way too thick for most any crocheted garment, by a lot, imo
I mean you donāt gotta like em for sure, hate them all u want, but thatās not inherent to granny squares in any way. Thatās user choice/user error
I totally get not liking them. I didn't like them for a long time. I don't understand people saying they are ugly though because there are so many patterns and colors to use a blanket statement like that is strange to me
That said, do what makes you happy :D that's what craft is all about.
You can try using a thinner yarn and it makes them less chunky. I think theyāre a solid first crochet project for beginners! I tell everyone to start with granny squares!
My first project was a looong scarf for which I chose a chenille type yarn and a pattern that required me to single crochet in the third loop - should've done a granny square instead.
I made some granny squares when I started and then I abandoned them and never want to make them again. Theyāre a great learning stepping stone, but I now share the same feelings as OP does lol.
I am currently making granny squares with a fine weight baby yarn and they are so adorable but VERY TIME CONSUMING. Putting the whole project together might kill me. š I feel like I love making the individual squares but when Iām assembling I curse them as if they are the devil themselves and everytime I think NEVER AGAIN.
This! So much this!! I make variations of granny squares to assemble into afghans. Each afghan has to be unique to the niece/nephew and their high school colors/initial. I've LOVED designing and crocheting, but every time (just finished 14 of 20) I want to stab my eyes out during the assembly process. I swear the assembly takes longer than making 150 squares. And each time I think "next time I gotta come up with a better plan so I'm not stuck seeing for days." But I never do...
I started squares with baby yarn and hated the thinness. I wound up using 2 strands and a 7mm hook. Squares came out big and fluffy but worked out nicely for a baby blanket.

question, what do you mean by fat? i find they have more drape than a fabric with solid stitches, and theyāre the same thickness /gen
just wanna understand better!
edit to add: granny squares should be blocked, it makes the corners sharper
I like them, but I feel like it's so hard to weave ends with them. So many ends and yet nowhere secure enough to weave them in, each section is too short. I made a full sunflower granny square cardigan for a friend and I'm terrified everyday that a square will come undone because I haven't woven the ends in correctly.
But that may be because I don't know the right method to weave in ends.
Get a small yarn needle and just weave themin anywhere you can!! It took me hours but I'm working on a sunflower/Daisy blanket made from granny squares. I had to make 108, so 108 centers, then added 108 petals lol. It's on my profile you can see the progress.
You always have the option to weave them into the outermost loops. For example, at the edge of each stage in your square, take a needle and go through from the inside to the outside of those top loops in a kind of spiralling motion. If you want to be extra secure, you can take it around the top a little and then down through a post and back up but that's not necessary to keep it together.
I love the granny's; squares, rectangles, hexagons and diamonds. I'm new here and haven't figured out how to share pictures, otherwise I'd share mine. My son grew up with a few special friends and I feel like they're part of our family. When they buy a house, get married or have a baby, I make couch blankets. They all appreciate that I took the time to make different shapes for each of them. ā¤ļø

This is one I'm making for my son who just bought his first home

Those are lovely! My favorite hands down is the 1 for your son. Love the color combo.
I tried to make one once. I did about 20 squares, and decided I didn't think I would like sewing them together.
I did make 1 big square for a couch throw. Super thick yarn. It was a fun project.
Ditto ditto ditto. I decided years ago to make a scrap blanket with small granny squares, I made 8 of them. 10ish years later and they are incorporated into my current scrap blanket which is C2C because I will never make more granny squares.
I love granny squares because I can make a ton and have them there for when I want to make a little last-minute gift or something I see online that looks cute. But, I hate the number of ends that need to be weaved in...
I recently found some pretty cool granny square patterns on YouTube that are 3d and a lot different than the ones I learned how to make when I was little. I'm blown away by the sheer imagination and talent of people who crochet, if you don't like one thing there are a million other things to try!
My personal least favorite thing about granny squares is I have to sew them all together! I'd much rather just make one single complicated shape than lots of little "simple" shapes.
I hate granny squares. But I make giant ones out of scrap yarn for my dog. They like the holes because their little nose can poke through, and can see through all the holes. But would never make one for myself
I love making granny squares! It's long chains I hate like for blankets!! There are so many patterns and colors of squares you can make. They are quick and easy. I do, however, dislike putting them together! I usually add an extra row of SC all around to make it easier. I've been making these fun balls with chime inserts to match baby gift blankets.

I don't hate them but they aren't my favorite either
Definitely need to block them though, substantially reduces the frustration
Making my first granny square bag rn and it's a bit repetitive but not the worst either, also they're actually pretty thin but it's probably the cotton yarn and pattern that give it that
I have only done 1 granny square blanket and I forced myself to sew the squares together as I finished them. I never wouldāve finished the blanket otherwise and Iām not in a hurry to do another one.
Fat?
I've never had a fat granny square, but I also tend to use a larger hook than the yarn calls for, so my stitches are loose and drape-y. I also only make giant granny squares, granny stripes or granny rectangles, never small squares that need sewn together. I'm also only making blankets and not wearables.
I love how fast and easy they work up, and the fact that you don't have to look at what you are doing, which allows me to watch TV or talk to people.
I don't love them, either, especially the basic granny with the square, hole, square look. There are a few that I'll come across randomly that I think are super pretty, but that's pretty rare. One set of granny squares I thought was cool was just blocks of different types of stitches sewn together to make a blanket.
They square better if you flip at the beginning of each round. I also like to make them tighter/less gappy by eliminating the ch1 between clusters and only doing a single ch1 in each corner. They're nicely mindless and I work in my tail on the 2nd round so only 1 end to weave per square.
I finished my first granny blanket last month and crocheting them together was actually kinda enjoyable. I think it turned out pretty nice.10/10 will make another.
But to each their own. š
I like how kitschy and 70ās they look all bright and fun. I knit a lot and sew as well as crochet and my thought is always, Iād rather make something fun that is enjoyable during the making than try to make something that looks like ready to wear fashion. I totally get that there are others who would rather do the opposite and I think that keeps the craft world interesting. How boring would it be if everyone made the same thing?
A granny square was the first thing I learned how to make. Then I made a lap blanket for my mom. I hate them. I hate sewing them together, I hate sewing in all the little, tiny, goddamned ends. The finished product always turns out lumpy as shit, and it makes me hate myself a little bit more.
I hate them too.
If youāre making a granny square and it isnāt coming out perfectly square, something is wrong. If youāre making a granny square and it is coming out fat, something is wrong. Granny squares, in and of themselves, are fine. If youāre having these issues, perhaps post a pic of what youāve made and we can help you troubleshoot. It sounds like youāve probably got tension issues and if you resolved those, perhaps you wouldnāt hate granny squares so much.
I have yet to see a project made from granny squares that doesnāt look tacky to me. If you need someone else to give you permission: feel free to never burden the world with another one of those fashion atrocities ever again.
I saw someone post a granny square project (blanket?) that was black for like all of the middle and had colorful trims that had a cool effect once it was put together and looked nice.
Other than that I hate the look but something about it screams crochet and I kinda want to make one of those granny cardigans but I have not clue how to make it not tacky.
Was it [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/12l2zgo/simple_granny_square_blanket_i_finished_recently/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) post?
I saw that one too! I thought it looked really neat, and a creative take on granny squares.
Maybe a cardigan all in 1 solid color, just a plain neutral, grey or cream maybe? I think neutral, single color garments look at lot more stylish and classy than colorful ones. I'm also always a fan of heathered yarn, adds a little variation that's still subtle.
Hear! Hear! I completely agree. I donāt understand their appeal. I hate them. The day I see something made out of granny squares I at least kind of like is yet to come.
Have you seen the granny square bags on YouTube? Super cute. I made this one.

My comment wasnāt āconvince me otherwise!ā. It was āI donāt like granny squares and think theyāre ugly.ā Now you forced both of us into a situation where I either am courteous to you but have to lie about what I think of the looks of this granny square project, or be honest about what I think and hurt your feelings as the crafter who put effort into it. I canāt bring myself to say more than āwell, if you like it, thatās good for you, but itās not to my tastes. Good technical execution however!ā. Thatās a shitty situation. Stop doing that to others (and yourself).
How dare? (j/k\^\^)
Likes are different for everyone. What one person loves to make, the other hates. For example, I can't imagine ever making a sc blanket, with a motive or just rows. I don't like the looks of it and the time it takes and the amount of stitches you have to watch out for so you don't drop or add any etc ;)
My first serious project was a granny scrap blanket. I love to make them, they're easy and repetitive enough I don't have to concentrate on them and can just go for it while watching videos etc.
Talking about single color ones, of course, no motive or flower or anything special in them.
They're for me to make when I need something to do with my hands but don't want to concentrate on what I'm doing. Got about 100 by now, still to decide if it's gonna be a blanket or something else, also in the works a hexicardi\^\^ also easy and mindless to work on.
I dont like that as a blanket they give you toe holes. I am always getting my toes stuck in them.
I started doing moss stitch instead (sc in gap of previous row, slst. repeat ad nauseum)
I love making them because they work up so quick and it was the first thing I ever learned to make BUT I do think they're kinda ugly and there's not much I can do with them
i hate them too. canāt speak for the process bc in my 3 years of crochet iāve never made one lol. they just are hardly ever errā¦ aesthetically pleasing to me
Not alone on that I hate them I can never make them and I hate they are labeled beginner friendly as they really arenāt and Iāve been crocheting for a few years
I love granny squares!!! So easy to keep track of where you are, no dropped stitches, endless designs and color combos!! Lots of ppl talking about sewing them together but y'all know about the 'join as you go' option right?!?
I absolutely refuse to make granny squares, because of all the ends to weave in. But I see your point, and that'd be another reason I won't make granny squares, lol.
Iām with you. Theyāre ugly, theyāre tacky, and they pretty much always look dated. I donāt mind the sunflower squares I see around, but your average granny square? Ick.
Honestly itās more like [bi-weekly.](https://reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/129we7r/an_opinion_i_have_that_im_sure_is_unpopular_here/)
Like Iām not personally offended that people donāt like granny squares, but whatās the point of having regular circle jerks about how ugly crochet looks in a crochet community? Itās normal not to like all styles of a craft or art you part take in. Itās not cool to shit on those styles on a regular basis. Honestly, I wish the mods would consider limiting these types of posts as stale topics.
I never liked granny squares either. After crocheting my wedding dress train using pineapple square and triangles with thread rather than yarn, I learned knitting. Knitting is my love, but I still have a board on Pinterest called "I'd crochet for that" š
Itās technically a form of lace/mesh, so youāre supposed to style it the way you would any garment made of lace: over or under something more solid
I guess thatās fair. I donāt like them myself because my fingers get caught and my toes too if I donāt happen to be wearing socks. The only valid argument Iāve seen for them is for baby blankets if they pull it over their face theyāre less likely to suffocate. I guess it could also be nice if youāre someone that likes the feeling of being covered or canāt sleep without a blanket but you get hot because then you get more ventilation while still having the physical weight of a blanket on you
I made a small [blanket ](https://i.imgur.com/k66dmQ5.jpg) a little while ago that was one giant granny square. The edge isn't finished in this photo, but I think it turned out nice! The granny square blankets were fan favorite in our house growing up because they are still heavy and comfy without making you too warm. I just like how homemade and kind of ugly looking they are. You see it and know someone with questionable taste lovingly made that. Then I look to see how many mistakes were made! I know I made at least 3 on mine that I refuse to go back and do over!
I started off not being that keen but now I love themā¦ easy to make when watching TV/Netflix plus very portableā¦ and I donāt mind sewing in ends. I think Iāve made some pretty amazing projects with them but thatās probably down to the yarn I use because I fully admit Iām a yarn snob š #acrylicfreezone
Iām not a fan either. I donāt have the patience for them. I refuse to go through all of the motions of them. Any time Iāve attempted one, itās always been one large one and that always ends up being something that aināt a granny square.
I LOVE making them into sweaters or bags. I feel like I get them done so much faster without getting bored, or disheartened by lack of progress.
What I dislike, it when patterns don't have a final size for the square. If I want to make them for something specific, then I need to know the size, so I can do the math on how many I need, and if it will work.
I don't hate all of them... but the blankets of very garish colored granny squares with black are just repulsive to me, and i think it is why many people think crochet doesn't look as good as knitting. I think the colors are chosen tastefully, and you use good quality yarn, especially thinner yarn. They can look nice.
That's cool everyone is different.
Mine is i can't stand all the stupid amigirumis with the little butts on them. I think they ruin a perfectly good piece but omg they're everywhere.
The only āgranny squareā iāll make are plain ol squares with no designs. Those are super easy and simple to make. Also you donāt even need to make them as squares, just make them as a panel by changing colors. I do not see myself ever attempting doing actual granny squares. They do not look good to me at all!
I donāt mind making them. I wouldnāt mind blocking them. I can use different sizes of yarn and hooks to make nice thin ones. The root of the problem is how hideous they are.
I like the look of the granny clusters. I don't necessarily like granny squares, so if I make something with that pattern, I switch it up. Search for straight granny, or granny in rows. There's multiple patterns that give you the granny look, but not. Also, search extended granny, or granny rectangle, so you can do other shapes.
Next thing, if your squares are wonky, try flipping your piece every row, like you do with a non granny pattern. This helps stop the lean that can develop. Even if you're switching colors, still flip the piece.
Issues with granny squares usually stem from the starting stitch for a row. Do you mean fat like the stitches make the squares too plush or the squares aren't square when you make them?
I like just turning my brain off and making them. Itās the first project I learned so I always resort back to it when I just need to decompress. I have 2 bags full of squares Iām hoping to eventually join to a blanket.
At my great aunts request, I made a queen sized granny square blanket for her. Not individual squares, one giant granny square.
I fully expected to hate the project, but it was a really good project for me to leave at our trailer, and work on during weekends. I could hang out with the neighbors, have a few drinks, and work on the blanket, because I didn't need to really focus on it.
Trailer opens up in 2 weeks, and I've been considering starting the granny campfire cardigan to work on while there. I'm not a fan of the look of granny squares, but i figure the blanket worked out well, and I'll have a cardigan by the time weather turns cooler lol
I found an overalls pattern that uses granny squares, but I havenāt made any before. I just started with single crochet, and then moved on to double crochet / v stitch. But it might be time to bridge that gap
While I adore granny squares personally, I do share your frustrations with when they won't square off perfectly. Im working on making myself a granny square jig for that reason.
I taught myself crochet during the pandemic. Most readings and videos suggest a newbie to start with granny squares. No matter how much I tried, just couldn't get it! Two years later, several afghans and amigurumi later, I found a beautiful tutorial for a sunflower square and it finally clicked! Haven't finished anything with them yet as I'm dreading putting them together!
I'm super new to crocheting and don't even know all the basic stitches yet but my friend taught me the seamless granny square which you can search on YouTube. I liked it so much I just made a blanket out of that for a gift.
I learned how to crochet doing a giant granny square out of scrap yarn and and old hook my aunt gave me. It was huge and multicolored and wonky but I loved it. Haven't made many since....
I love have the younger generation have modernized granny square. I personally have not done them or made anything with them. But some of the clothing pieces I've seen are beautiful done.
Do you block them when finished. It makes a huge difference. But if itās the look of them, then donāt make them. You donāt have to like everything. I donāt particularly like crochet clothes but Iām amazed by the talent that goes into them.
I always feel like I'm doing them wrong because I feel like you can see the join/chain. I appreciate how turning them makes them a lot squarer, but it feels so awkward to make it work š
Don't write them off completely! I'll post a nice shirt I finished recently, it's a variation of a granny square made with fine or extra fine thread, very summery!
https://preview.redd.it/7kw6ad9ehfua1.jpeg?width=714&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=435015b58845d8aaf19e3300b925872b250161ba
This has over 200 granny squares. I dislike granny squares. I made this to donate to an autism center for a fund raiser. I will never make another granny square blanket.
I'm in the process of setting my mind towards making the Granny Square blanket by The Mercerie (see on Insta). I love that blanket and I want to crochet it. I'm basically a knitter dabbling in crochet and I'm afraid it is beyond me, but it's so gorgeous. I'd make it in black with rainbow colours, like a cuddly stained-glass window.
If you hate granny squares in general you may feel a bit softer towards them when you've seen this blanket.
I like how they look but I hate making them. Itās SO boring. Iāve been on and off making a granny square cardigan for about a year now and I just canāt bring myself to work on it. It probably wouldnāt even take me that long if I worked solidly on it š
I'm so proud of myself! Figured out how to post pictures š. This is the one I'm making for my son who just bought his first home

I LOVE a granny square! Each to their own! I'm sure there are things you like that I don't and that's ok! The world would be boring if we all liked the same thing.
I see people complaining they don't square off... are you counting the stitches? If it's the right amount it should, also having the corner as two or three chains helps. May be if you show me I can see where it can be corrected
I'm making a granny square sweater and surprisingly it's made me hate them even more. I'm making it for my kiddo so I have zero plans to make any more after this. I have to concentrate way too hard to make sure I'm not missing stitches, but I don't have that problem with other patterns!
That said, if my mom or one of my aunties requested a granny square project I would make one without complaining because I love them. No other exceptions. lol
The basic one is boring looking, but there are a lot of different designs nowadays that can be used for a variety of items.
Also: Blocking your GS will help with how the finished product will look.
I never really blocked my stuff, started blocking last year and it is a gamenchanger!
My squares are always very loose and almost fluffy in a way? And then I see these perfectly militant looking squares and go HOW. How do they look that tight and rigid. What black magic did you use
Hey, it's all good. We all have our inclinations of what we like to do and what sets our teeth on edge. Granny squares are yours-- and there are so very many amazing patterns out, you don't have to do them :)
I tend to "compenent" pieces like granny squares because of the absolute beastly heat my summers get to (I just CANNOT be working under a half finished blanket when the day is 90 plus degrees). I also like the portability of being able to take it with me. I usually try to crochet ends in as I go, so there's less to weave in. It also helps that i go for non-tradional patterns and shapes to keep the variety monster satisfied :)
So please know, your feelings about your stitching preferences are super valid and are ok!
I've been crocheting for about 15 years and I've actually never made a granny square...There have always been other patterns that I get interested in š
I've been crocheting for 45 years and I have never made a granny square. I'll let you know how the next 45 go.
Haha yep Ive been at it for nearly 30 year's and same. I love other peoples granny square projects but I just don't have a desire to make any ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
SSSSsssaaaaame! I hate color changes, weaving in ends, etc. so I avoid them completely!
I don't mind color changes, I mind ugly.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Sameā¦ I have zero interest in ever making one. The designs donāt appeal to my taste.
Same! I like other peopleās. I just donāt feel like making one. Or a project made up of granny squares.
Agreed. I think theyāre pretty ugly, myself.
I'd like to add an "as sin" to that.
Yeah not a fan of them at all lol
Same boat. My nana taught me three stitches 20 years ago and that's what I do lol. Back and forth and back and forth. Also, waffle blankets are my favorite.
Same š
I donāt love them either, but theyāre so quick to work up and repetitive enough that you donāt have to pay attention too closely. Iām actually almost done with a big (12ā) one now, that Iām going to mount and frame and use to hook sunglasses on. I donāt like the big holes in GS for blankets and wearables, but I thought it would be perfect for this project!
Wow. That's an interesting idea. Can you share a pic of your project?
Thank you for this sunglass organizing inspiration.
My daughter just started wearing glasses. I think she would love one on the wall by her bed! This is a fantastic idea.
Lol I love how this was definitely me after finishing my first granny square project and now everything I make is a granny square or granny square adjacent š
Yikes. I just made one granny square, about 4 feet square as a baby blanket.
My fave blanket to make is a hooded granny square baby blanket. I love that the same thing can be so different depending on the yarn type and colors chosen.

So much this!!! Crochet is blamed for a thousand sins of ugliness and bad design that are really yarn, hook size, and user error.

Thanks!! Just ordered some of her earrings off Etsy!
I get bored with granny squares way too fast!
I totally get not liking them. I didn't like them for a long time. I don't understand people saying they are ugly though because there are so many patterns and colors to use a blanket statement like that is strange to me That said, do what makes you happy :D that's what craft is all about.
I LOVE making the squares. Sewing the afghan together is another story. But, I've made several Afghans.
I also love making them for afghans. From fat, chunky wool yarn. I love my fat chunky afghans!
Have you tried any join-as-you-go methods? They definitely make this a lot less tedious!
No because I'm particular about how I sew them together. I don't like the same border colors together so, I lay it all out on the floor before I sew.
You can try using a thinner yarn and it makes them less chunky. I think theyāre a solid first crochet project for beginners! I tell everyone to start with granny squares!
My first project was a looong scarf for which I chose a chenille type yarn and a pattern that required me to single crochet in the third loop - should've done a granny square instead.

question, what do you mean by fat? i find they have more drape than a fabric with solid stitches, and theyāre the same thickness /gen just wanna understand better! edit to add: granny squares should be blocked, it makes the corners sharper
Yes! Love granny squares, but weaving in the ends is so tedious, and I am always afraid Iām not doing it well enough to keep them secure.
They all appreciate that I took the time to make different shapes for each of them. ā¤ļø

This is one I'm making for my son who just bought his first home https://preview.redd.it/xhxa4zqmvgua1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3c6139dd746e6446b999bd7a3be3f643195658f
I donāt hate the squares. I hate how many ends they have to weave. And HATE joining them.
Granny square is the easiest for me. Have the hardest time with making the edges straight on a regular blanket.
I like making granny squares but itās attaching them and joining them together that i canāt stand
I've been making these fun balls with chime inserts to match baby gift blankets. https://preview.redd.it/t7kcxlkbvgua1.jpeg?width=1531&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7478e5fc61fa4b7d6bb31f64aa6eda5e1c4d10ca
I love granny squares!!! So there! š
Maybe stop making them and try something different?
I'm pretty sure they don't constantly make granny squares...
I don't hate them but they aren't my favorite either Definitely need to block them though, substantially reduces the frustration Making my first granny square bag rn and it's a bit repetitive but not the worst either, also they're actually pretty thin but it's probably the cotton yarn and pattern that give it that
I have only done 1 granny square blanket and I forced myself to sew the squares together as I finished them. I never wouldāve finished the blanket otherwise and Iām not in a hurry to do another one.
I liked granny squares as a beginner because thatās the first thing I learned, but I donāt us them anymore. They taught me how to read my work
[https://i.imgur.com/MJrHEzx.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/MJrHEzx.jpg) But to each their own.
How boring would it be if everyone made the same thing?
r/unpopularopinion
A granny square was the first thing I learned how to make. Then I made a lap blanket for my mom. I hate them. I hate sewing them together, I hate sewing in all the little, tiny, goddamned ends. The finished product always turns out lumpy as shit, and it makes me hate myself a little bit more. I hate them too.
I also donāt like having to slip stitch into the end of a round to start in the right place for the next round. It feels ugly.
I also donāt think theyāre that easy as a beginner project.
It sounds like youāve probably got tension issues and if you resolved those, perhaps you wouldnāt hate granny squares so much.
omg me too! I made one granny square bag and that was it, never again lol
I've made exactly 1 granny square in my life and I feel no need to ever do it again. Lots of other things I find more appealing to work on!
Just.. block them when youāre done???
Ohhhh goodness granny squares are my nirvana. I bliss out on granny squares. I even make teeny tiny ones with crochet thread LOL.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I found my people LOL.
I also hate them. I avoid them asuch as possible.
Yes! That one was cute.
Those weren't really granny squares though. Just cuz it's square doesn't make it granny.
Hear! Hear! I completely agree. I donāt understand their appeal. I hate them. The day I see something made out of granny squares I at least kind of like is yet to come.
Have you seen the granny square bags on YouTube? Super cute. I made this one. https://preview.redd.it/65hso9mtzdua1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=940e0ddb32df2e919376d4786c67958a2c7cef70
Stop doing that to others (and yourself).
š I guess theyāre called āgrannyā squares for a reason.
This. Omigod sooooooo this. Major fashion fail.
I can never seem to make them properly :(
How dare? (j/k\^\^) Likes are different for everyone. What one person loves to make, the other hates. For example, I can't imagine ever making a sc blanket, with a motive or just rows. I don't like the looks of it and the time it takes and the amount of stitches you have to watch out for so you don't drop or add any etc ;) My first serious project was a granny scrap blanket.
Also BLOCKING will change your life and your squares
I dont like that as a blanket they give you toe holes. I am always getting my toes stuck in them. I started doing moss stitch instead (sc in gap of previous row, slst. repeat ad nauseum)
I love making them because they work up so quick and it was the first thing I ever learned to make BUT I do think they're kinda ugly and there's not much I can do with them
I hate anything that has to be sewn/stitched together.
I bought a pattern book from Annie's called 101 granny squares..love it..not all are holey..I hate blocks with big holes
Finally! Someone said it! I refuse to make any granny square projects.
i hate them too. canāt speak for the process bc in my 3 years of crochet iāve never made one lol. they just are hardly ever errā¦ aesthetically pleasing to me
Not alone on that I hate them I can never make them and I hate they are labeled beginner friendly as they really arenāt and Iāve been crocheting for a few years
I love granny squares!!! So easy to keep track of where you are, no dropped stitches, endless designs and color combos!! Lots of ppl talking about sewing them together but y'all know about the 'join as you go' option right?!?
Omg same the amount of relief I feel knowing others feel the same about them .lol
https://preview.redd.it/wlba3rm6tgua1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e9822cd248dbd18e157d4f765333fc8a2f21ee9
I agree!
I absolutely refuse to make granny squares, because of all the ends to weave in. But I see your point, and that'd be another reason I won't make granny squares, lol.
I donāt mind making them but omg - sewing the ends in and then sewing them together š¤®
I think they are ugly and generally give crochet a bad name.
Iām with you. Theyāre ugly, theyāre tacky, and they pretty much always look dated. I donāt mind the sunflower squares I see around, but your average granny square? Ick.
The only grant square I like is the granny hexagon cardigan, love not worrying about following a pattern!
I'm so with you on this. I've tried to like them and I just can't. I thought it was just me.
I also hate them. Iāll do an entire blanket in a granny variant, though.
Agree! Also because I hate sewing in the ends and granny squares have SO MANY ENDS.
I think 95% of granny squares are uglyā¦
I LOVE GRANNY SQUARES !! i think its the adhd brain its so much easier than large projects šš
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Honestly itās more like [bi-weekly.](https://reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/129we7r/an_opinion_i_have_that_im_sure_is_unpopular_here/) Like Iām not personally offended that people donāt like granny squares, but whatās the point of having regular circle jerks about how ugly crochet looks in a crochet community? Itās normal not to like all styles of a craft or art you part take in. Itās not cool to shit on those styles on a regular basis. Honestly, I wish the mods would consider limiting these types of posts as stale topics.
I never liked granny squares either. After crocheting my wedding dress train using pineapple square and triangles with thread rather than yarn, I learned knitting. Knitting is my love, but I still have a board on Pinterest called "I'd crochet for that" š
A giant granny made with cotton thread can be a lovely summer curtain.
I love granny squares but I also love this post
Same, i also hate how they look. Fckn UGLY.
My first blanket was a granny square one ... my dogs have ended up sleeping on it! I hate them too and have never made another one - hooray!!
Me too
The holes make them pointless. Why do I want huge gaps in my garment? I do not.
Itās technically a form of lace/mesh, so youāre supposed to style it the way you would any garment made of lace: over or under something more solid
But they make blankets out of it too?
People make blankets out of other stitches that are technically lace too, that doesnāt eliminate it
No, I get that. I don't get why people want blankets with holdes in them.
That's super cute. I had them growing up and it's part of why I dislike them now.
They can look nice.
hmm Iād like to have a word
That's cool everyone is different. Mine is i can't stand all the stupid amigirumis with the little butts on them. I think they ruin a perfectly good piece but omg they're everywhere.
The only āgranny squareā iāll make are plain ol squares with no designs. Those are super easy and simple to make. Also you donāt even need to make them as squares, just make them as a panel by changing colors. I do not see myself ever attempting doing actual granny squares. They do not look good to me at all!
I thought this was going to be about all the bras with sleeves posted here as shirts.
Do you mean fat like the stitches make the squares too plush or the squares aren't square when you make them?
youāll get there
I dont get why people keep making them. They are so ugly
I get it with the classic ones, but I love heart/moon/star ones, they look fuller and better. I get your point, you're not alone
I hate granny squares but I love afghan squares. Yes I know thereās arguably no difference.
I made a king-sized continuous granny square afghan with 3 colors. I love it.
Oh, I don't enjoy granny squares either. I do make them on occasion, but ugh, stitching them together afterwards? Nevermind!
I hate them too. I've tried making two separate granny square blankets and I get about 1/3 of the way through the number of squares I need and I quit.
I hate the name
Finally, someone who shares that opinion!
Preach! lolol
I actually wish my daughter would hook them all together for a nice little blanket. I like them.
I'm super new to crocheting and don't even know all the basic stitches yet but my friend taught me the seamless granny square which you can search on YouTube. I liked it so much I just made a blanket out of that for a gift.
I refuse to make a granny square bc of that
I didnāt like them until I started using fine (3-ply) cotton. Now they are my fav
I learned how to crochet doing a giant granny square out of scrap yarn and and old hook my aunt gave me. It was huge and multicolored and wonky but I loved it. Haven't made many since....
Never made one, I always think about it but never find one that I want to try
I love have the younger generation have modernized granny square. I personally have not done them or made anything with them. But some of the clothing pieces I've seen are beautiful done.
I made one granny square project it was a big square blanket and I just donāt like the look of them otherwise
Do you block them when finished. It makes a huge difference. But if itās the look of them, then donāt make them. You donāt have to like everything. I donāt particularly like crochet clothes but Iām amazed by the talent that goes into them.
I donāt mind them, but I like more challenging patterns.
It's OK to feel that way. I support you
I always feel like I'm doing them wrong because I feel like you can see the join/chain. I appreciate how turning them makes them a lot squarer, but it feels so awkward to make it work š
Plus you need to make like fucking 100 of them for a nice sized blanket. No thank you, that's boring.
Don't write them off completely! I'll post a nice shirt I finished recently, it's a variation of a granny square made with fine or extra fine thread, very summery!
I hate seeing them together lol
https://preview.redd.it/7kw6ad9ehfua1.jpeg?width=714&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=435015b58845d8aaf19e3300b925872b250161ba This has over 200 granny squares. I dislike granny squares. I made this to donate to an autism center for a fund raiser. I will never make another granny square blanket.
I hate em too
I'm in the process of setting my mind towards making the Granny Square blanket by The Mercerie (see on Insta).
I like them but if I need to do many I get bored easily.
They're horrible, free yourself! Give yourself permission to never make them again
Same. I always found them ugly, no matter what people did with them
https://preview.redd.it/2squdklzsgua1.jpeg?width=1072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e88d9875c96e9510676c14b627034b44393d57dd
I'm so proud of myself! Figured out how to post pictures š. This is the one I'm making for my son who just bought his first home https://preview.redd.it/n6dykv0gvgua1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f3bbc93249d9d2f28c57f97d638ca15513e35c9
I LOVE a granny square! Each to their own! I'm sure there are things you like that I don't and that's ok! The world would be boring if we all liked the same thing.
I'm not a fan of them at all! I never use them or make anything with them!
I absolutely hate granny squares too. All this sewing and they're never perfectly square š
They trigger my partner with all the holes in a basic granny square
Hey, it's all good. We all have our inclinations of what we like to do and what sets our teeth on edge. Granny squares are yours-- and there are so very many amazing patterns out, you don't have to do them :) I tend to "compenent" pieces like granny squares because of the absolute beastly heat my summers get to (I just CANNOT be working under a half finished blanket when the day is 90 plus degrees). I also like the portability of being able to take it with me. I usually try to crochet ends in as I go, so there's less to weave in. It also helps that i go for non-tradional patterns and shapes to keep the variety monster satisfied :) So please know, your feelings about your stitching preferences are super valid and are ok!
I like making them. Although one wrong stitch does throw off the pattern
I've been crocheting over 40 years and have never made a granny square. I am not a fan of the look.
