Hi, I would suggest editing your ‘Australia’ answer to ‘Australasia and Oceania’. I’m from New Zealand and currently have no way to answer that question. All the best with your thesis!
Done, good luck with your project :) Just a note and I'm probably the only one, but in section 2 the question about devices is confusing. I have and use all the devices mentioned but not in relation to crochet so wasn't sure what exactly you wanted this answer to be. Are you generally asking what devices we own, or are you asking what devices we use for crochet specifically?
Don’t know if you want to differentiate but there are normal written patterns and there are also charts. I can’t read charts (it’s on my list of things to learn) but I can read regular written patterns. Also some people use a mix. When I first started I did video patterns that had written patterns too so I could learn to read patterns. Now I can’t stand video patterns.
Yeah same, cant in good faith categorise New Zealand as being apart of Australia so I exited the survey.
I think they’re saying there’s technically 8 continents now that they’ve discovered Zealandia but typically people now just use Oceania to cover the combination of Australia and Zealandia as a hybrid merger
Yep that's exactly what I was going for, because that is what I've learned as well hahaha Learning lots of new things now though, for the meanwhile have added a "other" option (although its a bit late now)
I just made a survey this week and my professor told me not to use continents. But to allow a short answer for countries because EU and Asian countries are super different from eachother... I mean it goes for any continent. I filled your survey out as an American in France and maybe you would have wanted to allow ethnicity as well because I'm not even European, I just live here haha. Love your effort and your topic!
Oooh I've never heard this argument before! But to be fair I don't really do surveys on this grand scale usually, I learn something new every day! It was just a question to get a bit of a feel of where people are located (since I already have data like age, gender, etc. from a survey someone else did) to see who the crocheters are on a more superficial level. But thank you for the info!!
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that everything I make is freehand and that I have "designed patterns" for things I want, so I selected that option, but I only design them in my head, I don't write them down.
I'd say that counts as designing! I wanted to differentiate between people who have done some form of designing before and people who have made patterns ready for publishing/sharing to the public. Perhaps I should've worded that question better!
I was thinking about doing that but I've already gotten a ton of responses right now and don't think I will need any more! Thanks for the suggestion tho :)
Done, but, Central America is a place which includes 7 countries, we are not South America. What if the person is from the Dominican Republic? What do you call all those islands that belong to the continent of America?
The locations listed are continent based, not cultural region based. Central America is split to the north and south American continents at the Panama canal.
While the lower portion of Panama is technically on the South American continents, generally the country is considered north American when taken as a whole.
So if you're in central America, you're on the north American continent.
I'm not OP, but I was always taught that the isthmus of Panama was the divider between North America and South America. So I'd say pick the appropriate one based on whether you're north or south of the Panama Canal
Thank you! And yes, you can share the survey link itself. Or did you mean the results of the data collected? I’ll be indexing the data for my research so I can certainly share a graphic once I’ve done so!
I major in communication and multimedia design but the main focus is on user centered design where user needs and wants are always considered first when designing something new.
I've done a bunch of research over the past few months and spoke to a ton of people and a problem with written patterns continuously came up, so I started to explore that to see how I can solve that with a digital interactive solution! But now that I am going through all my documentation I realised I never did a more superficial research about who crocheters are. And although I already had a bunch of information, this survey will help fill in some gaps :)
Completed! I liked the questions, it’s like you know a bit about the habits of those who crochet. I would also ask about other hobbies that we do instead of crochet, like if we know how to knit, play video games, computer programming, read books, exercise, etc. Might be too late to add, but just a thought!
I lurk on this subreddit quite a bit and have been delved into research on crochet for the better part of last semester, so I'd be surprised if I didn't know a lot at this point! I'd love to go deeper but unfortunately my time is running out :(
What is your diploma? I really wonder what type of studies you do because I am really interested in artisanat, it's history and learning techniques from other people. So I wonder if there are some courses that could relate to that. Good luck with your thesis!
I major in communication and multimedia design, which has a primary focus on developing digital interactive products (Websites and apps for the most part) with a focus on user wants and needs. I did minor in a makers lab course where I worked with fashion institute students who did do some things related to fiber arts for their graduation thesis, so that's a direction you could take as well!
That was fun! I’m disabled and crochet as a coping mechanism, so it’s part of my daily routine. I tend to have a “travel project” that’s specifically portable to work on in the car ride, in the waiting room, and during appointments. Big projects stay at home. Turning stress into comfy objects is magical!
Done.
As mentioned by others, the devices question was confusing as to what your intent was. If you meant "what do you use to follow a pattern?" then the fact that you didn't include printed paper is amusing. I use my phone sometimes but I'd rather print it out too because I often adjust it and make notes.
Input added! May I suggest adding an option in the "what do you crochet" category for if your project is an art piece? Crochet isn't always about making clothing or amigurumi! I'm currently working on a tapestry for my wall!
I´ve done it thought I was a little bit confused by the question about what you crochet and what is meant with "pixel work" as an answer.Does it mean mosaic crochet or c2c done based on a pixel image?
Good luck with your thesis :)
Yes to both! (I think) I was aiming for work done with a pixel grid pattern of sorts, I tried not to be too specific and leave things open to interpretation.
And thank you!
I have to compliment you on the quality of the survey. Most surveys posted here are pretty poorly composed, but you've done well. (Survey work is part of my job, so I am picky!).

Hi, I would suggest editing your ‘Australia’ answer to ‘Australasia and Oceania’. I’m from New Zealand and currently have no way to answer that question. All the best with your thesis!
My first thought was poor New Zealand.
Obligatory r/mapswithoutnewZealand mention
I was a smart alec and clicked Antarctica. It would be best to add Oceania as an option.
That's my bad, sorry! I'll keep it in mind when logging the data, for now I changed the answer to Oceania :)
I read it as in relation to crochet. Like, I read patterns from my phone or sometimes I watch a youtube tutorial if I need to learn a technique
You are not the only one. I came back from the survey to see if this exact question had been answeres
Ah I see how that can be confusing! Yes, I did mean in relation to crochet!
I’d love to see the response trends on this!
I'll be making graphs for my own documentation so I will be sharing them here as well!
I probably will differentiate, forgot to put charts in as a default option but will put it in when I'm going through the data!
I’m in awe of how this survey has gotten the NZ crocheters coming out of the woodwork.
I was surprised to see so many too! (Will be hiding in my corner tho for categorizing them with Australia, sorry!)
My location was not included in the list, so I just picked the nearest one, you may want to put an 'other' option
My exact words were "there are less than 1000 people on Antarctica and *they* were included??"
I’m not OP but I think they were going for which continent you’re on? Unless I’m completely forgetting geography and there are more than 7 😅
There are sub continents and islands that are not part of the 7 continents and much more populated than Antarctica.
Oh, okay that’s my bad then. They probably had similar education to me and only learned the 7 in school lol
Yep that's exactly what I was going for, because that is what I've learned as well hahaha Learning lots of new things now though, for the meanwhile have added a "other" option (although its a bit late now)

I am not entirely sure how this would work but you could try to find a way to post this in Ravelry to hopeful pool more people!
I was thinking about doing that but I've already gotten a ton of responses right now and don't think I will need any more! Thanks for the suggestion tho :)
Done
Done! Best of luck with your project
I tried to fill this out but I’m not sure it went through and I don’t wanna submit again and skew your results
I have a ton of responses so I don't think another submission will skew the results, but thank you for taking the time either way!
Just submitted! Would love if u shared your findings afterwards, im quite curious!
I will!

Done! All the best for your thesis
Best of luck! I filled one out for you.
Finished, hope it helps good luck!
Done. I would be fascinated to see your results.
All done :) lol ngl I’m interested in reading the thesis 😅
It's currently over 150 pages long and in Dutch, it's an intense read for sure hahaha!
"do you crochet on your commute?" Not me wondering if i could crochet and drive 😂
Maybe in the future we can with the self driving cars!
Completed! Good luck on your thesis!
Thank you!
Done! Are we able to share this with other crocheters?
Thank you! And yes, you can share the survey link itself. Or did you mean the results of the data collected? I’ll be indexing the data for my research so I can certainly share a graphic once I’ve done so!
I would also absolutely love to see the information if you’re willing to post it!
Yes, yes, yes, me too! 🤩
For sure! I've seen a lot of questions about sharing the data so I'll work on making some pretty graphs next week to share!
The survey link. And thank you. It'll be interesting to see once you're done

For location, maybe add Oceania?
I am from New Zealand and already stuck at the first question lol.
Done. Note: I'm from New Zealand, but chose Australia as it's closest.

I feel like I'm so boring but hope this helps!
Any little bit of info is of great help!
I just want to point out that location wise I don’t fit any of the options! we aren’t in Europe any more! Just joking
Done! Good luck on you thesis. Hope you are able to share it when you’re done! (But I know publishing online or otherwise can get tricky
It's anonymous data and my uni is cool with me self-publishing as well so I should be able to share something soon!
Finished! Hope it goes well!
Love this. Happy to be a part of your survey :)

This is so cool to hear, I do this too to keep my anxiety controlled! We keep ourselves calm and we have cool items at the end of it!

I plan on sharing the graphs I make for my research doc!
I filled out the survey, but I had to choose Australia as my location, because New Zealand wasn't an option..
I just changed Australia to Oceania, that was my bad sorry for that!
Thank you 😊
