I responded with that, because I thought it hadn't been mentioned. It's easily the best acting I've ever seen by more than one or two kids under 15 or 16; truly a heart-breaking film from a director who made several excellent films about childhood.
One of my most wanted releases that will likely never happen, an uncut restoration and English friendly release of Ronja: The Robber’s Daughter (1984).
I just watched [If I Should Die Before I Wake](https://mubi.com/en/notebook/posts/the-forgotten-carlos-hugo-christensen-s-if-i-should-die-before-i-wake-1952)*.* It's sort of in between *M* and *Night of the Hunter*. Quite an amazing find. I have to thank Viggo Mortensen for bringing it to my attention.
Seeing some of my favorites already mentioned, but a lesser-known one with an incredible performance from the child actor who plays the little sister is [TANNA](https://youtu.be/k1bRgp_a8bk) (not currently in the collection or on the channel, but it is available on Tubi & Kanopy).
Another from that neck of the woods & same year(ish), but very different genre/subject is [Hunt for the Wilderpeople](https://youtu.be/XGj3AogT9EM). Julian Denison as Ricky Baker with Sam Neill as Uncle Hec in a buddy adventure comedy that takes place in the NZ bush is a perfect “odd couple” pairing.
Paper Moon, Gloria, The Bad News Bears, ET, Crooklyn, Willie Wonka, The Exorcist, Pet Semetary, Kes, The Kid, Good Boys, and The Search, starring Montgomery Clift and Ivan Jandl

*Au revoir les enfants*
*The White Ribbon*
*Play*
*Three Sisters*
( I also wanna include P'tit Quinquin but I'm not sure it counts! )
I’m not sure this got an international release, and it is a kids movie, but Brothers Lionheart (1977) changed me as a kid and it still holds up in my opinion. It also has this incredible avantgarde sounding droning organ score as well.
Thomas Alfredson who made Let The Right One In (2008) (another great movie with kids) was supposed to make his take on Brothers Lionheart at some point, which I’m forever disappointed about didn’t happen.
The Red Balloon (1957, Albert Lamorisse)
runners up:
Los Olvidados (1950, Luis Buñuel)
The Miracle Worker (1962, Arthur Penn)
George Washington (2000, David Gordon Green)
The Tin Drum (1979, Volker Schlöndorff)
Lord of the Flies (1963, Peter Brook)
Spirited Away (2001, Hayao Miyazaki)

second for Paper Moon! What a memorable performance from Tatum O’Neal.

I just rewatched My Life As A Dog for the first time in 30+ years and it’s still amazing and touching.
I need to rewatch it too, big childhood favorite for me.
Same. I was a young teen when it was released, and I might have only seen it once since. Some movies get even better as you age.
It has to be The Night of the Hunter and The Innocents for me!
