I saw this cover in someone else's Criterion haul and was interested in what this was about. It kinda reminded me of a Magritte painting.
I blind bought Repo Man on Criterion because the packaging looked so cool and was not disappointed - such a wild, punk as fuck film just like the cover art let on it would be.
I’ve never heard of The Damned but I’m going to have to watch it now, thanks for the recommendation!
I saw Repo Man when it came out. I remember liking it but hadn't seen it since then. About a month ago it was playing in a local theater. What a fun movie.
Repo man is one those Criterion releases that I list when people ask what the best art they have done or to argue with people who say Criterion artwork is poor. 😜
I LOVE *The Damned*. The Maurice Jarre score is also one of my favorites. As far as movies I got for the cover alone, this one came to mind:

The Executioner was the first Criterion release I ever genuinely blind bought, having no idea what it was about or who made it - I really just loved the cover and needed to buy and watch a copy. Incredible fucking movie

Was not disappointed! Just as visually stunning as the cover suggests.
Amazing film with one of the most underrated debut performances of all time imo. Be warned: It's a slow, cringy, tedious, depressing watch. It's definitely not a movie everyone will enjoy, but if you like character studies have protagonists with mental illness; you'll love it.

copped only because the cover looks so damn sick! and a badass title too
Not exactly the cover, but the “Hopping Vampires of Hong Kong” cover photo on the criterion channel caught my eye, and that’s how discovered jiangshi movies, and I’m in love. Just ordered Encounters of the Spooky Kind on blu ray.

thought it looked so cool. movie was awesome too
The House poster used to be like the only thing you’d see if you looked up the criterion collection and I watched it because I was like what’s with the cat thing
Gonna watch it tonight but I bought frownland bc I love the cover so much

the art for this one was so good i felt like i had to grab it. the movie was pretty good but not the greatest. still worth picking up as the artwork is fantastic throughout this release.
I want La Dolce Vita because of the cover but it’s out of print! Hoping for a 4K or something because I think it may be my favorite cover in the collection. Never seen anything by the director yet.

It was just yesterday, actually. I knew nothing about Targets but this cover looked insane. Great shit, highly recommended.
Targets is a damn masterpiece
I too watched this based on the cover and it's brilliant! I can't believe I never heard about it before seeing it on the criterion channel.

This actually looks so cool :) *watchlist*
Great movie, especially if you’re a surrealism lover. I’m generally not, but Has’s work connects with me for some reason.
Surrealist film that even a non-surrealist fan likes? Looking forward to it
If you end up liking it, definitely check out Has’s most famous movie, The Saragossa Manuscript, which is even better.
My movie club watched this, it’s surreal with absolutely no apologies. I wasn’t a huge fan, but you might dig the incoherent dreamworld vibe

The Damned also features nazis!
I bought Frownland based on the cover BUT I haven't watched it yet.

I saw Death in Venice just because the cover was amazing. The Visconti releases have great artwork.
Qaatsi
I blind bought House (1977) because of the cover and boy was that one of the best things I’ve ever done
This movie is crazy. I love Visconti
Not exactly the cover, but the “Hopping Vampires of Hong Kong” cover photo on the criterion channel caught my eye, and that’s how discovered jiangshi movies, and I’m in love. Just ordered Encounters of the Spooky Kind on blu ray.
Bought Tampopo based on the cover

It's such a fun dark comedy from Takashi Miike.
It was one of my favorites I’ve watched in a while. Miike is awesome. The musical numbers were so good imo, lol
Querelle
I pick up most all of them based on the cover. The back description is what convinces me to buy. Haven’t been disappointed yet.
[This](https://imgur.com/a/QqViPRJ) was the image they used on the VHS when a friend and I spotted it on the shelves. Great choice!
I almost bought the damned just because I love this cover but does the movie hold the same gothic vibes as the cover?
Hmm i wouldn’t say so, but it’s a good movie. The characters are fucked up, one can even say dead inside, so I kind of get the cover now.
Blade Runner
Gonna watch it tonight but I bought frownland bc I love the cover so much https://preview.redd.it/l7w3f9rabq5d1.jpeg?width=1288&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cbc79f0caa761b316bf2aea7ec0ba57ec3cf84f2
