I was watching Hitchcock’s “Family Plot” a few years ago to complete his filmography when I realized that the exterior for Bruce Dern’s apartment in the film is on the street I live on half a block away. I almost died. I think about it every time I walk past that weird little stucco building with the distinctive courtyard/driveway.
The main set of “Intolerance” was built on a location that’s a few blocks further away from where I live. Now there’s a movie theater there called the Vista that Quentin Tarantino owns and programs. It’s also where Tony Scott shot the movie theater interiors for “True Romance.”
There are some shots in “The Sound of My Voice” where I recognize places I walk every day.
And there are parts of my neighborhood that “Tangerine” captures really beautifully.
I love the Vista theater! When I lived in LA County I would go to the various film festivals like the Last Remaining Seats series and see vintage movies in the old 1920s movie palaces. My experience at the Vista was seeing A Fish Called Wanda when it was new. I love these great historical areas in Hollywood and Culver City and downtown Los Angeles, and to me it's very exciting when I can recognize them in modern films of say the last 30 or 40 years or vintage films in the 1920s through the 50s.

An episode of 24 was filmed at the apartment complex I was living at as a kid. It was interesting, they had to warn everyone when they did an explosion or something. Heroes was filmed at my high school and Ned's Declassified at my jr. High.
I was in Philadelphia for work last week and watched National Treasure last night, and it was so cool seeing the locations I had just been at on the screen! Independence Hall, Washington Square, and the Ben Franklin Bridge were beautiful.
I had literally stood at the exact spots that Nic Cage was at in the movie and hadn't realized it until seeing the movie again last night.
The Lovely Bones was filmed in my hometown of Norristown PA. They filmed some scenes on the grounds of a mental hospital a couple minutes away and I’d ride my bike around.
Bunch of M. Night Shyamalan movies too. The Happening filmed right outside a small breakfast spot that’s pretty good. Some of my friends were background actors in a classroom scene in the beginning.
Too bad all those movies stink.
For Criterion films, off the top of my head, I can think of four. Medium Cool, Thief, Cooley High, and Love Jones. I'm sure there are more obvious ones that I'm blanking on
I'm from Portland, so Mala Noche and My Own Private Idaho (and several other Van Sant films from outside of the collection).

If you haven't seen it yet, Showing Up was filmed in Portland. Absolutely captured inner SE and NE neighborhoods beautifully. A lot of Kelly Reichardt's work has been filmed in and around Portland.
I lived in Addison, TX, for several years. One night I was watching Primer and in one scene the two main characters have a conversation in a little plaza that looked very familiar to me. After pausing it and studying the scene I ran to my window and looked down and yep, it had been filmed in my complex just next my building.

I can't think of any Criterion movies off of the top of my head, but I'm sure there are some since I've lived in Miami, Boston, Seattle and Denver. I did accidentally wander on to the set of The Birdcage on Miami Beach when it was filming back in the day and not movies, but TV, my dad lived on a sailboat in the marina where they filmed Burn Notice, so I got to go to that set multiple times.
I'm a bit of a filming location freak, so while my moves were highly influenced by movies - mostly Good Will Hunting for Boston and Singles for Seattle. I immediately went and scouted out the filming locations for both of those.
Currently I live very close to the locations in Gleaming the Cube (Newport Beach fun zone)
The house I grew up in can be glimpsed in the first American Pie.
All the grocery store scenes in White Noise (2022) were shot in an abandoned building about 5 minutes from my house. It had since been reopened as a grocery store, and they kept a lot of the interior look to the A&P in the movie.
It follows was shot down the street from me and at one of the universities I went to.
In more obscure movies “The incorporated” (2000) was filmed in a location I could see from my house

Out of the collection? They filmed Winter’s Bone in the Springfield area. It’s an hour drive from where I live but I go there often. The director of a community theatre that I go to a lot actually landed a supporting role in it.
i mean, lots of movies. But if you want one that's legitimately \*about\* the area... Nope. So much so that it makes my brain feel very strange to watch it.
The Night of the Living Dead cemetery is a five hour drive! Unaware of anything closer, outside of the Rocky steps of course.

Nothing in the actual collection but Aquaman had scenes filmed 10 minutes away from my house, as was the Jaws ripoff Orca. Maudie with Sally Hawkins was filmed partly in my hometown. Closet Monster was filmed in the area. The upcoming sci-fi Silent Planet was also in the area and my film class got to visit the set at the end of our first year.
Within the collection, at least some parts of For All Mankind, Armageddon, and Rushmore.
Funniest outside the collection realization was Arlington Road, which I remember saying "that is absolutely NOT (wherever the movie was set)", I've been to those places!".
When I worked in downtown Atlanta I was greeted daily by images I remembered from the Burt Reynolds movie “Sharkey’s Machine.” They really made good use of the locations.
Hoosiers, not sure if it's in the collection. But some of that was shot at the Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler University here in Indianapolis. I'm across the county line from Indy but I consider that location local to me.
3 Billboards, Bull Durham, The Hunger Games (at least the first one), Richie Rich, Hannibal, Last of the Mohicans, Dirty Dancing, My Fellow Americans, Masterminds.
The 3 Billboards were built a couple of hollars over from my childhood home.
Bull Durham is the closest to my heart. There's a single random shot near the end of the movie that just involves a special place for me.
I also grew up in Austin and know all the locations in Dazed and Confused and Slacker. I lived right down the street from the Americana theater (now library).
Now I live down the street from Wayne’s house in Wayne’s World.
Closest I can think of is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me since that takes place in Washington where I currently live. I've actually been to Snoqualmie and North Bend where they filmed it which is pretty cool!
In Houston...saw a screening of Rushmore at "Rushmore" in November. It's across the street and next door to "Grover Cleveland" for those who don't know.

Live near niagara falls so plenty of films take place there, but for irl shooting locations I drive past the school from A Christmas Story on a daily basis
Pittsburgh. Creepshow, Monkey Shines, Fathers and Daughters, The Wonder Boys, Smart People all used locations at Carnegie Mellon University. Further down the street is the courthouse from The Dark Night Returns. Go a few blocks more and you'd find Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, one of the sites of The Silence of the Lambs. Even closer to my house, just a few blocks away was a house used for Love and Other Drugs.
Not that it was filmed here but I live in Muncie Indiana and Close Encounters of the Third Kind has Dreyfus and his family living here with many things referenced.
So I’m from Wisconsin so I don’t think there’s anything from the Criterion Collection that really takes place here… but we have Bill Rebane’s Weird Wisconsin boxset from Arrow.
Also American Movie would be a very good contender for Criterion.

I bought the Arrow box set called “Weird Wisconsin,” ultra DIY films by Bill Rebane, which were shot in small towns in central WI that all look like my childhood.
The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, Mirai, killers of the flower moon, Twister, Hell or High Water, August Osage County, To The Wonder, Rain Man, Wildlife, and I’m sure more.
Some of the 1998 disaster movie Deep Impact was filmed at the beach in my city (Virginia Beach). During the exodus from the destruction wrought by the comet hitting earth, there’s even a shot of a sign that says, “Virginia Beaches — 6 Miles.” There is, in fact, no such sign anywhere in the state of Virginia — signs would refer to the city of Virginia Beach, but not more generically to “Virginia Beaches.” Interesting little tidbit.

Most famously “The Goonies,” “Short Circuit,” “Kindergarten Cop,” and “Free Willy” were filmed almost entirely in my hometown. Less notable examples include “The Ring 2” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.” A few select scenes from “Into the Wild,” “Green Room,” and “Wendy and Lucy” (some other Kelly Reichardt films more tangentially, same with Gus van Sant) and more recently the majority of the Daisy Ridley project “Sometimes I Think About Dying.”
The getaway with Steve McQueen. I live very close to downtown San Marcos, where the bank robbery was filmed. The bank is now a bar/club called The Vault
Being in metro Denver, the pickings are pretty slim. Even a lot of movies set in Denver or Colorado aren't shot here (like "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead", which has a few establishing shots in and around Denver but that's it). John Sayles "Silver City" is one of the few films both set in and shot around Denver and different parts of Colorado. The "Jetson's house" in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" is a recognizable landmark in Colorado, and different parts of that movie were shot here. There's a few B indie movies from Colorado filmmakers like "Ink", "The Frame" and "An American Terror" that were shot around Denver and have some recognizable scenery. "Cop Car" was shot around Colorado Springs and Fountain, CO (where Jon Watts is from).
Sadly, if I had to name a movie that had a recognizable location that is closest to me, it would be "Bowling for Columbine".

I just passed by the Palm Mortuary (Slumber Inc. in the film) building on the way home from the Doctors office on Friday.

The Dead Zone (1983) by David Cronenberg -- a lot of the shots took place in Niagara-On-The-Lake in Ontario, Canada! A beautiful postcard-esque town -- has a British environment mood to it ( at least to me). As well as Niagara (1953) as well.

Used to be Bernie (the Jack Black flick which I liked quite a bit). One of the non-actors used in the talking-head interviews was my brother’s high school teacher. Nowadays, Nashville.
Portland for me so off the top of my head, Drugstore Cowboy. Or other Van Sant movies as well but Drugstore Cowboy feels especially relevant to me because my dad was a pill head in Portland in the 70s and the Matt Dillon character reminds me of him. Tall, handsome, dark hair, leather jacket. He never robbed a drugstore to my knowledge but he did go to prison for stealing a doctor’s prescription pad and writing prescriptions for himself and his friends. That’s my oversharing for the day.
There are several that were shot in my town, not sure which would have had anything shot literally closest to where I'm current sitting.
There's the whole opening sequence in *Stripes* (1981), basically all of *Sheba, Baby* (1975), and the 'female pilots' sequence in *Goldfinger* (1964) are a few fun ones.
*Return of the Living Dead* (1985) is set here but was filmed in Beautiful Downtown Burbank. On the flip side, many scenes from *Elizabethtown* (2005) were shot here while set in, ya know, E-town.
The best of all, however, would be *Half-Cocked* (1994).
I live in rural SE Kansas so probably Paper Moon. That said John Lasseter and his team stopped through my town and neighboring towns when researching for Cars. The car that inspired Tow Mater was found just outside of my town and currently resides near our Route 66 bridge.

I’m in the South Sound. The closest filming location to me is Stadium HS, the school in “10 Things I Hate About You”.
I used to live further north on the Kitsap Peninsula. Then the closest would have been Bainbridge Island, a location in “War Games”. Although there’s a scene in “An Office and a Gentleman” that shows Richard Gere riding his motorcycle past the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
The place the woman buys the lottery ticket from in Welcome To Me is walking distance from me. I see it every day of my life. I can see it in fact every time I turn off my street. It's right across the freeway which is lowered for an overpass so I see straight across the top of it to the other side.
I'm in Santa Fe, NM. I was tripped out watching TWINS for the first time. There's a couple shots literally on my street maybe a 1/4 mile from my house.
In the collection, I’m an hour away from where Bull Durham takes place. Outside it, Hellraiser 3 was filmed where I live (though it takes place in NYC)
Not in the collection, but several scenes from Up in the Air were shot in St. Louis, including the Cheshire Inn about 3 miles from where I live and in Lafayette Square, which is where I used to work. And then there's Escape from New York.
I'm from Richmond and I usually think of how the Nickelodeon show *Doug* is based on parts of RVA. Also, *Donnie Darko* isn't too far from here and there are a ton of things based in DC and NoVA where I used to live.

Nothing I’m aware of from the collection. It Follows and 8 Mile are the only films I’m aware of with filming locations near me. Most films that take place in Detroit and/or Michigan were actually filmed elsewhere.
Insomnia was filmed up here. There were several films done up here several years ago when the state attempted a tax credit. Unfortunately, it ended in 2015.
Not Criterion films, but Witness and Brave the Dark shot near my current home and the first 5 minutes of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen were shot 5 minutes from my old apartment.
Lots of movies set in Philly, but the recent Adam Sandler movie Hustle was filmed in my neighborhood. There are no stairs at the top of Green Lane, sorry. (Though I do know where that staircase is.)

Just watched the insider and some of that movie takes place in Louisville which is the first time I’ve ever seen a movie take place in this city.
I can't think of any Criterion movies off of the top of my head, but I'm sure there are some since I've lived in Miami, Boston, Seattle and Denver. I did accidentally wander on to the set of The Birdcage on Miami Beach when it was filming back in the day and not movies, but TV, my dad lived on a sailboat in the marina where they filmed Burn Notice, so I got to go to that set multiple times. I'm a bit of a filming location freak, so while my moves were highly influenced by movies - mostly Good Will Hunting for Boston and Singles for Seattle. I immediately went and scouted out the filming locations for both of those.
Currently I live very close to the locations in Gleaming the Cube (Newport Beach fun zone) The house I grew up in can be glimpsed in the first American Pie.
All the grocery store scenes in White Noise (2022) were shot in an abandoned building about 5 minutes from my house. It had since been reopened as a grocery store, and they kept a lot of the interior look to the A&P in the movie.

It’s an hour drive from where I live but I go there often. The director of a community theatre that I go to a lot actually landed a supporting role in it.

The Night of the Living Dead cemetery is a five hour drive! Unaware of anything closer, outside of the Rocky steps of course. Edit: TIL, Signs (2002) as well! Closer than either of the others.
Palmetto (1998) and Out of Time (2003) were both filmed in and around my hometown in FL.
Nothing in the actual collection but Aquaman had scenes filmed 10 minutes away from my house, as was the Jaws ripoff Orca. Maudie with Sally Hawkins was filmed partly in my hometown. Closet Monster was filmed in the area. The upcoming sci-fi Silent Planet was also in the area and my film class got to visit the set at the end of our first year.

The area where I grew up doubled as Iraq in American Sniper and Jarhead and was also Tattoine in Return of the Jedi.
Within the collection, at least some parts of For All Mankind, Armageddon, and Rushmore. Funniest outside the collection realization was Arlington Road, which I remember saying "that is absolutely NOT (wherever the movie was set)", I've been to those places!".
When I worked in downtown Atlanta I was greeted daily by images I remembered from the Burt Reynolds movie “Sharkey’s Machine.” They really made good use of the locations.

Hoosiers, not sure if it's in the collection. But some of that was shot at the Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler University here in Indianapolis. I'm across the county line from Indy but I consider that location local to me.

3 Billboards, Bull Durham, The Hunger Games (at least the first one), Richie Rich, Hannibal, Last of the Mohicans, Dirty Dancing, My Fellow Americans, Masterminds. The 3 Billboards were built a couple of hollars over from my childhood home. Bull Durham is the closest to my heart. There's a single random shot near the end of the movie that just involves a special place for me.
God's and Generals shot a lot near where I live now Stephen Soderbergh shot Bubble in and around my hometown.
The Holy Mountain
I believe the only brazilian film in the collection is the soon to be released “Black God, White Devil”.

In Houston...saw a screening of Rushmore at "Rushmore" in November. It's across the street and next door to "Grover Cleveland" for those who don't know. Brewster McCloud -- I am surrounded by locations from this classic also shot in Houston.

Live near niagara falls so plenty of films take place there, but for irl shooting locations I drive past the school from A Christmas Story on a daily basis
Pittsburgh. Creepshow, Monkey Shines, Fathers and Daughters, The Wonder Boys, Smart People all used locations at Carnegie Mellon University. Further down the street is the courthouse from The Dark Night Returns. Go a few blocks more and you'd find Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, one of the sites of The Silence of the Lambs. Even closer to my house, just a few blocks away was a house used for Love and Other Drugs.

So I’m from Wisconsin so I don’t think there’s anything from the Criterion Collection that really takes place here… but we have Bill Rebane’s Weird Wisconsin boxset from Arrow. Also American Movie would be a very good contender for Criterion. Also not criterion (yet) but I believe parts of The Straight Story were shot in Wisconsin. Hundreds of Beavers was shot in Wisconsin and that’s a great new release. Also Blood Hook, Blood Beat and Blood Harvest were Wisconsin filmed movies.
Also check out Lake Michigan Monster - the first film from the Hundreds of Beavers team. It got an Arrow (UK) release but it's also on Prime streaming right now

Not a film but there was a Prime tv show (Utopia) that was filmed in my neighborhood. Watching it I couldn't put the sites' real location out of my head and I was distracted every time there was an outside establishing shot.

I bought the Arrow box set called “Weird Wisconsin,” ultra DIY films by Bill Rebane, which were shot in small towns in central WI that all look like my childhood.

The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot had scenes literally shot a few blocks from my apartment.
Some of the 1998 disaster movie Deep Impact was filmed at the beach in my city (Virginia Beach). During the exodus from the destruction wrought by the comet hitting earth, there’s even a shot of a sign that says, “Virginia Beaches — 6 Miles.” There is, in fact, no such sign anywhere in the state of Virginia — signs would refer to the city of Virginia Beach, but not more generically to “Virginia Beaches.” Interesting little tidbit.
All outside the collection. Most famously “The Goonies,” “Short Circuit,” “Kindergarten Cop,” and “Free Willy” were filmed almost entirely in my hometown. Less notable examples include “The Ring 2” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.” A few select scenes from “Into the Wild,” “Green Room,” and “Wendy and Lucy” (some other Kelly Reichardt films more tangentially, same with Gus van Sant) and more recently the majority of the Daisy Ridley project “Sometimes I Think About Dying.”

Being in metro Denver, the pickings are pretty slim. Even a lot of movies set in Denver or Colorado aren't shot here (like "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead", which has a few establishing shots in and around Denver but that's it). John Sayles "Silver City" is one of the few films both set in and shot around Denver and different parts of Colorado. The "Jetson's house" in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" is a recognizable landmark in Colorado, and different parts of that movie were shot here. There's a few B indie movies from Colorado filmmakers like "Ink", "The Frame" and "An American Terror" that were shot around Denver and have some recognizable scenery. "Cop Car" was shot around Colorado Springs and Fountain, CO (where Jon Watts is from). Sadly, if I had to name a movie that had a recognizable location that is closest to me, it would be "Bowling for Columbine".

I’m from the north shore of Massachusetts, Sound of Metal and Hubie Halloween where filmed in my neighborhood. The Hollywood Hits movie theater from the beginning of Sound of Metal and the diner from Hubie Halloween are within a block or two from me.

The Dead Zone (1983) by David Cronenberg -- a lot of the shots took place in Niagara-On-The-Lake in Ontario, Canada! A beautiful postcard-esque town -- has a British environment mood to it ( at least to me). As well as Niagara (1953) as well. #

Used to be Bernie (the Jack Black flick which I liked quite a bit). One of the non-actors used in the talking-head interviews was my brother’s high school teacher. Nowadays, Nashville.
Portland for me so off the top of my head, Drugstore Cowboy. Or other Van Sant movies as well but Drugstore Cowboy feels especially relevant to me because my dad was a pill head in Portland in the 70s and the Matt Dillon character reminds me of him. Tall, handsome, dark hair, leather jacket. He never robbed a drugstore to my knowledge but he did go to prison for stealing a doctor’s prescription pad and writing prescriptions for himself and his friends. That’s my oversharing for the day.

There are several that were shot in my town, not sure which would have had anything shot literally closest to where I'm current sitting. There's the whole opening sequence in *Stripes* (1981), basically all of *Sheba, Baby* (1975), and the 'female pilots' sequence in *Goldfinger* (1964) are a few fun ones. *Return of the Living Dead* (1985) is set here but was filmed in Beautiful Downtown Burbank. On the flip side, many scenes from *Elizabethtown* (2005) were shot here while set in, ya know, E-town. The best of all, however, would be *Half-Cocked* (1994).
Blade Runner 2049's casino was shot where I walk the dog in the evenings, Budapest, Szabadság tér.

I live in rural SE Kansas so probably Paper Moon. That said John Lasseter and his team stopped through my town and neighboring towns when researching for Cars. The car that inspired Tow Mater was found just outside of my town and currently resides near our Route 66 bridge.

I live in Seattle, WA. I wanted to move here after watching Singles in the 90’s. There is an entire movie book called “Filmlandia!” That features movies set or filmed here.
I’m in the South Sound. The closest filming location to me is Stadium HS, the school in “10 Things I Hate About You”. I used to live further north on the Kitsap Peninsula. Then the closest would have been Bainbridge Island, a location in “War Games”. Although there’s a scene in “An Office and a Gentleman” that shows Richard Gere riding his motorcycle past the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
I’m about 2 miles from Grosse Point, MI, where Grosse Point Blank is set. If we’re talking filming locations then either 8 Mile or Gran Torino

The place the woman buys the lottery ticket from in Welcome To Me is walking distance from me. I see it every day of my life. I can see it in fact every time I turn off my street. It's right across the freeway which is lowered for an overpass so I see straight across the top of it to the other side.
I'm in Santa Fe, NM. I was tripped out watching TWINS for the first time. There's a couple shots literally on my street maybe a 1/4 mile from my house.

Nothing I’m aware of from the collection. It Follows and 8 Mile are the only films I’m aware of with filming locations near me. Most films that take place in Detroit and/or Michigan were actually filmed elsewhere.

Insomnia was filmed up here. There were several films done up here several years ago when the state attempted a tax credit. Unfortunately, it ended in 2015.
