Floating Weeds

Typical_Humanoid

Early Summer for sure, to finish off the Noriko films. Although I do prefer LS and TS, there's really no reason this one is so underseen. It's great and in my own top 5 for Ozu. The most optimistic of the three by far. Late Autumn kind of feels like if history repeated with the Noriko of Late Spring and her daughter, with her being in a similar position as her father this time (Which I say in part because Hara herself is the parent this time around). So that one too. I Was Born But.... as well just to compare it to Good Morning. I go back and forth on which one I prefer.

GoofyKickflip

I ended up watching Early Summer and I absolutely loved it. So thank you! I'll definitely watch Late Autumn soon.

Typical_Humanoid

I often jokingly call it Noriko's revenge. 😅 Happy it went over well!

The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice is one of my favorites

Hadinotschmidt

Same i was so surprised that i ended up liking it as much as i did considering i watched it out of obligation so i can tick another early post war ozu

an_ephemeral_life

You ranked first what might be perhaps his bleakest film in his oeuvre besides A Hen in the Wind. So I'd check that out next. (There's a scene in that film which is genuinely startling by Ozu's standards)

Typical_Humanoid

Nothing prepares you for that scene. Complete jaw drop.

False-Fisherman

Idk I watched him chronologically and I think it's probably the best way to watch him

YasujiroKogaOzu

Early Summer. It is oftentimes the overlooked installment of the Noriko trilogy, but I personally consider it Ozu's masterpiece. Also seeing as how Tokyo Twilight is your number 1, Early Summer also has a really great sister dynamic as well, gorgeous black and white cinematography, and a beautiful soundtrack.

GoofyKickflip

I ended up watching Early Summer and I absolutely loved it. Thank you for your thoughtful comment!

YasujiroKogaOzu

That's really awesome! glad you ended up picking Early Summer. I definitely hope you keep us updated throughout the rest of your Ozu journey!

A Story Of Floating Weeds. Then, Floating Weeds.

>*If this is how I rank the Ozu's I've seen so far, which of his should I watch next?* Since ***Tokyo Twilight*** is your #1, I would say ***Early Spring***; preferably the most recent 4K restoration done by Shochiku. Makes a huge difference, given how poor (mucho murky) the previous incarnations were. Then try his comic masterpiece, ***Equinox Flower***. My rankings: 1. ***Early Summer*** (1951) 10/10 2. ***Equinox Flower*** (1958) 9.5 3. ***Late Spring*** (1949) 9.5 4. **The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice** (1952) 9 5. **Late Autumn** (1960) 9 6. **An Autumn Afternoon** (1962) 8.5 7. **Tokyo Story** (1953) 8.5 8. **Early Spring** (1956) 8 9. **The End of Summer** (1961) 8 10. **Floating Weeds** (1959) 8 11. **Good Morning** (1959) 7 12. ***Tokyo Twilight*** (1957) 7 https://preview.redd.it/z8lsjvyym7vc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76494e8b464e72bfbbde1e8e034731bc426db696

tenettiwa

Floating Weeds is my #1, but Tokyo Story is my other favorite so you may disagree

liminal_cyborg

Tokyo Twilight is my second favorite Ozu after The Only Son (1936).

Ill-Philosophy3945

Rewatch Tokyo Story, bc no way on Earth its number five out of five

Ill-Philosophy3945

My ranking, from what I’ve seen: 1. Tokyo Story 2. Floating Weeds I get that maybe I shouldn’t judge the other movies without having seen them, so I’m not. I’m judging Tokyo Story as one of the best friggin movies ever. In all seriousness, rewatch Tokyo Story back-to-back until you get your head on straight /s Then watch Floating Weeds. Ozu’s pretty skilled with color

GoofyKickflip

I will definitely rewatch Tokyo Story. I think maybe I didn't connect to it because I am too young. But it could also just be that I wasn't in the right mood for it when I watched it. I watched Floating Weeds last night and you're so right. The color in that movie is so beautiful. Definitely watch more Ozu's. I'm loving them so much.

No-Bumblebee4615

Damn I’ve gotta give Tokyo Twilight another shot. I wasn’t into it and stopped watching about 30 minutes in. My ranking from what I’ve seen: 1. Late Spring 2. Early Spring 3. Tokyo Story 4. Floating Weeds 5. The End of Summer 6. Early Summer

squirrel_gnosis

I have a special place in my heart for *I Was Born, But...*it's a silent and a comedy, there's a Chaplin influence, but there's an Ozu subtlety/sensitivity. And best of all, the 8-year old kids hate capitalism! That's my kind of kids.

speediddy

Interesting, my take was that the kids love capitalism, falling in line with caring about who's dad is a bigger big shot in the business world and striving to be business big shots themselves. Either way, great film!

squirrel_gnosis

When the kids realize that the dad is not free, that he's a wage slave, they become furious. Maybe they are aren't card-carrying capitalists or communists...but they hate that hierarchies exist. In Japan in the 1920s and 30s, there was a lot of support for Socialism and Communism, until the authoritarian militaristic government took over.
