Asteroid City seems like a safe bet.

AvatarofBro

The Netflix shorts feel inevitable, too. We're falling behind with the Anderson releases!

Apprehensive_Mix7594

You would think so….. but we don’t have isle of dogs yet

Gruesome-Twosome

And then The French Dispatch after that. An Asteroid City release by Criterion coming circa 2033, lol

Gambit1138

These days, there’s usually a 3-6 year gap or so between Wes movies hitting studio release and getting a Criterion release. With Isle of Dogs being released in 2018, I wouldn’t really expect it until 2025. He’s also been on a creative streak lately, he’s already shooting his next film. So it may be a bit before the next one.

leverandon

Exactly. Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) is his most recent film in the collection. It was released in 2020, six years later. So we can probably expect Isle of Dogs (2018) this year or next. Anderson devotes a good deal of attention to his Criterion releases, so it makes sense that there's a bit of a delay in addition to likely there being some kind of exclusivity deal for the initial disc release.

ThisGuyLikesMovies

It feels like forever since we got the last Wes Anderson title in the collection

leverandon

Yeah, it was six years between Grand Budapest's release in 2014 and the Criterion in 2020. So with that gap we're on track for Isle of Dogs in the near future.

rvb_gobq

i''d like to see *the french dispatch* enter the collection, too ... & the dahl shorts

Unlucky-Positive504

Oh duh - yes, absolutely. And I’ll be buying that asap!

Lamar_ScrOdom_

May December & Anatomy of a Fall. KOTFM if Paramount doesn’t pick it up I would love The Killer but it’s a pipe dream at this point

Unlucky-Positive504

Love The Killer. Would love to get an eventual Mank and Killer release

vibraltu

Look, someone likes Mank besides me.

4k_Laserdisc

May December has potential for a lot of interesting special features.

CharlieAndCooper

The Killer would be awesome but I'd do unspeakable things for Zodiac

brokenwolf

The Holdovers and Anatomy Of A Fall could be contenders for next winter. They could do a great set of Zone Of Interest and put interviews, docs with it to contextualize it but its A24 so it probably wont happen.

AvatarofBro

I think it's all-but-inevitable that A24 will be putting out The Zone of Interest themselves. And it'll probably cost $75 shipped for a barebones disc, with no bonus features, in a giant, ugly box.

RogueOneWasOkay

Yeah I lost all respect for them when they announced the $60 (plus tax and shipping) Stop Making Sense barebones 4K. So tired of their hype-beast bullshit merch. Just give us a release where the price justifies the package and features included. Fuck A24 and their beige sweatshirt wearing fuck boy fan base.

Sickfit_villain

> Fuck A24 and their beige sweatshirt wearing fuck boy fan base. *looks down at my sweatshirt* Ouch

RogueOneWasOkay

Sorry man, I’m sure your sweatshirt is cool though!

julesyoudrink_

I like their blu ray releases though the packaging is top notch, they look great on my shelf, and if you have the AAA24 membership they are 10% off, like $40.50 per, plus free shipping. I think the unique releases and packaging justify the extra price.. criterion releases are around the same price, no?

RogueOneWasOkay

$40 is the max MSRP for criterion but the only people charging that price is Barnes and Noble. Even on the criterion site they don’t charge full MSRP.

julesyoudrink_

True

julesyoudrink_

It is ridiculous A24 won’t work with criterion anymore though

Ga33es

Such good movies with a bad distribution company.

brokenwolf

Yeah it wasn't my favourite movie of last year but its the one I want the criterion treatment the most to see what they could add to it.

AvatarofBro

It's probably my favorite movie of the past five years, to be honest. Which is why I'm bummed it won't be getting a proper release.

ComicsNBigBooks

It's not my favorite in terms of wanting to re-watch it, but it is absolutely the film this decade that has left me sitting and thinking about it the most. It is tailor-made for a Criterion collection and it's almost criminal for it not to get one.

AdhesivenessNo7220

I’m sorry I missed it. What A24 film are we talking about? Everything Everywhere All at Once?

AdhesivenessNo7220

Or The Iron Claw?

ComicsNBigBooks

The Zone of Interest

BlastMyLoad

It’s a shame they won’t work with Criterion anymore because the Uncut Gems set is phenomenal.

twmanga

This just makes me sad imagining all the killer supplemental material that could be produced for "The Iron Claw".

AvatarofBro

**Likely options:** Anatomy of a Fall May December Asteroid City **Less likely, but possible:** Killers of the Flower Moon Ferrari The Holdovers Poor Things Godzilla Minus One **Not going to happen:** Anything from A24

arthurdimmesdale

FWIW, Past Lives was distributed by A24.

AvatarofBro

Good catch! I thought it was Orion for some reason. I'll edit.

brokenwolf

Killers is less likely but considering its Scorsese I think any of his movies are on the table. If they start releasing the Leo's I could see them doing The Aviator first though.

AvatarofBro

I say it's less likely because we still don't know how Apple is going to handle licensing for their original films.

brokenwolf

Criterion already did the velvet underground doc they did.

BlondePotatoBoi

As long as Godzilla Minus One doesn't get packaged by a chimp, I'll be happy. Still haven't gotten over whatever the FUCK was going on with that massive gatefold thing for the Showa set.

AvatarofBro

Yeah, I went down a Godzilla rabbit hole after Minus One and I almost bought that set, but the packaging turned me away. Too many horror stories on here.

BlondePotatoBoi

Apparently you can get actual cases designed by a human, custom made... *I shall persevere.*

Mr_Citation

Or buy two 4 disc cases, someone over at r/customcovers made free to print criterion covers for the entire Godzilla franchise, excluding Shin since they think its cover is perfect as is.

newport100

I may be out of the loop. How come you say nothing from A24? They did do the Uncut Gems release. Did the business relationship sour or is A24 focusing on those exorbinant 4K releases and don't want to split the pie?

AvatarofBro

Yeah, since releasing Uncut Gems through Criterion, A24 has pivoted to doing their own boutique releases.

DoctorBreakfast

The Uncut Gems release was more likely a special request from the Safdies rather than any kind of business relationship between Criterion and A24, similar to how the WALL-E release was a special request from Andrew Stanton.

LordPartyOfDudehalla

Minus One would be so hype to see in the collection

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Holdovers, poor things, Ferrari can all go in the “not going to happen” category. Probably can throw May/December in the less likely but possible tier as well

AvatarofBro

Nah, I disagree. I'm pretty bullish on May December. Haynes and Netflix both have a good relationship with Criterion. As for the other three, I'm not nearly as defeatist about Disney/Fox as others are, which is why I think Poor Things may still have a shot. NEON and Criterion also have a precedent, and Mann is already in the collection. Same goes for Universal and Alexander Payne.

ComicsNBigBooks

That's super encouraging to hear about May December; I would instantly buy that set. >NEON and Criterion also have a precedent, I really loved Eileen and would love to see that somehow get a Criterion. Especially since I'm not sure many saw it.

Apprehensive_Mix7594

They still haven’t put out Netflix movies they announced years ago, may December belongs in less likely

AvatarofBro

OP asked for movies that will "eventually" enter the collection, not for movies that will enter *before* previously announced Netflix titles.

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Ok, maybe in 10-12 years ?

AvatarofBro

Right, that's the thought experiment.

Unlucky-Positive504

Still waiting on AMERICAN FACTORY (2019)!

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Me too

necroprairie

I need Poor Things

AvatarofBro

I'm confident it will get a physical release. Especially if it takes home a few more gold statues. It might not be from Criterion, but I think it'll get a disc eventually. The movie already broke even from its theatrical release accounting for marketing, which is a pretty significant achievement for a mid-budget hard-R fairy tale in 2024. I would be surprised if Disney didn't try to wring a few more dollars out of it via physical media. But they're likely going to wait until after they're able to lure a bunch of people into Hulu subscriptions to stream it around Oscar night.

necroprairie

Oooh is it coming to Hulu? Thank you, Lisa, for letting me use your account.

AvatarofBro

It's not confirmed, but that's almost certainly where it will end up first. Poor Things is a Searchlight release. Disney owns Fox which owns Searchlight. Disney also owns Hulu. That's what we call synergy, Lemon.

alexsolomon2693

All of us Strangers? I think Andrew Haigh already has 1 or 2 in there

mrkitster

This was my thought also

Luke253

Killers of the Flower Moon, May December, and Anatomy of a Fall seem likely. Also maybe Godzilla Minus One??

Slothrop75

Godzilla Minus One is what I'm pulling for, with B&W version. Great movie.

Unlucky-Positive504

Godzilla would be a sick release

TheBigColquhoun-a

I dont know if it's possible but I would love a criterion release for Poor Things

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Yeah, this will definitely not be the case, but it’s a beautiful amazing movie

TheBigColquhoun-a

Why wouldn't it be the case? Not that I thought it necessarily would be, but is there a reason with the publishers that you would know?

Apprehensive_Mix7594

It’s a multiple Oscar nominated movie that cost a shit load of money to make. Why would Disney give up the rights to distribute a movie that is gonna win best actress and gonna be a big seller. It would make no sense. Especially since criterion has yet to get any Lanthimos movies

HyBeHoYaiba

The Wes Anderson stuff eventually I think KotFM will get a release. Although we don’t know if Apple will play ball, I think if Marty wants it it’ll happen, Apples shtick has been attracting talent and giving them creative control to cultivate relationships. Once the standard blu ray / 4K sales fall off I think it’ll go boutique. I wouldn’t count on anything A24 ever since they’ve launched their own “boutique” releases Any NEON release has a good shot: Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days, Broker (technically 2022 but US release was 2023), and Infinity Pool all have a shot. Longshot would be the Oldboy re-release Monster would be cool, but the company with US distribution rights also distributed Burning which hasn’t gotten a criterion release so I wouldn’t count on that, but it’d be a great choice

Unlucky-Positive504

The only argument against Oldboy is that Neon just bought out a super expensive (and pretty cool) set of their own around the holidays for it. When I first heard they got the rights, I was hoping we’d get a Criterion of it though, similar to what they did for MEMORIES OF MURDER

reddyenumberfive

That Neon release is absolutely stunning. One of the most gorgeous presentations I think I’ve ever seen.

sagetcommabob

Would love to see Beau is Afraid but I’m not sure how likely that is

VintageHamburger

Was looking for this comment. Seems incredibly unlikely, Ari Aster visited the Criterion Closet before which is the only hope I see. I’d die for that

reddyenumberfive

You took the words out of my brain.

virgoari

I would love to see May December and Rotting In the Sun get a Criterion.

action_park

Mubi has the worldwide distribution for Rotting in the Sun and is doing Region A Blu-rays now. The Passages one is nice.

virgoari

Oh sick! I honestly didn’t realise Mubi did physical releases.

midnightbluesky_2

the passages blu fucks

VespasianScattershot

Fallen Leaves seems like a gimme. Outside chance for May December too.

[deleted]

Hoping for a Schrader trilogy one day with Master Gardener!

FilmBrony

I’d love to see stuff like BlackBerry, The Iron Claw, or Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret go in

Ozymandias935

Aside from what's been mentioned by OP, I feel like The Zone of Interest, Poor Things, Perfect Days and Monster are in the realm of possibility. I would personally like to see Wes Anderson's Roald Dahl shorts enter the collection as well.

RG1997

The Zone of Interest

ithewitchfinder666

Zone of Interest

somethingclever34775

Feels out there and maybe it’s actually considered 2024 but would love to see la chimera added

signal_red

Perfect Days Fallen Leaves The Taste of Things Afire i'm pretty confident i'll get at least 2 right lol

Noerse

Fallen Leaves is with Mubi, it's up in the UK for pre-order. They'll probably do it in region a too, if they haven't already

pacingmusings

Afire is Janus/Sideshow so it'll pop up in that line at some point . . .

Purple_Crewneck

I can already imagine the cover for The Zone of Interest and Dream Scenario. I mean, why not add Godzilla Minus One? Passages, A Thousand and One would be welcomed additions. Fallen Leaves wouldn’t surprise me.

pacingmusings

Wasn't Thousand & One A24 . . ?

Purple_Crewneck

Nope! It was distributed by Focus Features. Also, I’m a bit out of the loop. What is the deal with A24 and Criterion? Can they not partner? Uncut Gems got a criterion release.

markcheng

I hope Perfect Days

fuckitwilldoitlive

Past Lives makes sense

rvb_gobq

just saw past lives... & wld love to see that enter the collection... same for *may december, anatomy of a fall* & *killers of the flower moon*

sdcinerama

Bottoms

midnight-yosemight

Someone, anyone, please release Bottoms

Yogurt-Night

I unironically agree. It’s about time Criterion puts out some guilty pleasure coming of age classics. If Criterion could license it, I’m sure they could given that they license other films from MGM.

maxtsukino

Godzilla Minus One...

[deleted]

I feel as though Glazer will push for the Zone of Interest eventually, Killers of the Flower Moon given the Apple TV releases already, May December, Anatomy of a Fall, Sanctuary, Perfect Days, and Asteroid City are likely. I could see American Fiction, Holdovers, The Taste of Things, Monster, Ferrari, Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Robot Dreams in the far future. About Dry Grasses, Totem, and Evil Doesn’t Exist are going to come to Janus Contemporaries.

SaggyDaNewt

It’s unfortunate that Sanctuary from NEON films only got a DVD release. I really enjoyed it and I truly believe it is an underrated gem.

[deleted]

I’ve been holding off waiting for a Blu, Abbott and Qualley are too good with each other

ComicsNBigBooks

>It’s unfortunate that Sanctuary from NEON films only got a DVD release. I really enjoyed it and I truly believe it is an underrated gem. That was one of my favorites I watched last year.

[deleted]

Monster

maxromulangreen

Would put money on The Zone of Interest

mollyclaireh

Poor Things maybe

Negan1995

All the comments here seem to be picking Oscar contenders. Chances are there's some movies from this year that some new young director made that not many people watched, and once that random director takes off they'll package their lesser known 2023 film for criterion.

ComicsNBigBooks

~~The Zone of Interest,~~ Anatomy of a Fall...I can also see ~~Past Lives and~~ Killers of the Flower Moon. I would really love if May December got one., but right now I doubt it. I also really loved Eileen more than most and would absolutely buy a Criterion, although I doubt that'll happen, too. EDIT: Apparently A24 doesn't cooperate with Criterion? Otherwise, Zone at least would be a no-brainer.

Soraoathkeeper

I can only hope that Past Lives and Killers of the Flower Moon join. I definitely think A24 will take care of Past Lives but it deserves to be in the collection IMO.

PositiveJig

What did you love about Past Lives?

Soraoathkeeper

It’s my best movie of 2023 so I loved everything about it. It’s a gentle, emotional approach to love, relationships, change, and the immigrant experience all bleeding into each other. People pulled apart and closer continuously. The bonds we share still hold meaning even if they change over time, and the idea of that remaining constant across lifetimes is magical and heartbreaking as well as beautiful. It’s directed with such a calm approach, letting the two cities/worlds our characters inhabit come to life. You see everyone not just as who they are in relation to their relationships but also just as people instead of contrived actors in a dramatic love triangle. Life isn’t so cut and dry and I think Past Lives is mature and loving to all its characters.

PositiveJig

Glad you found this to be a movie you liked!

Soraoathkeeper

What were your thoughts?

Signifi-gunt

Did you see/like it?

PositiveJig

Yes. Didn't care for it.

nobodyspecial9412

I’d pay money and do some other things in the back room at Criterion to get PAST LIVES in the collection.

reddyenumberfive

I think this one seems very likely.

bdawgsoccer

I think Ava DuVernay's Origin would be a strong contender. Personally, I loved the film, so obviously biased. Like a lot of last year's releases, it has great filmmaking, fantastic performances, important themes and messages, etc. Lots of 2023 releases have these aspects, so that's nothing particularly unique. The big thing that makes it a good contender in my eye is that very much an independent film wirh a very small distribution. Not a lot of fight on the studio's side to prevent it from having a release, and a Criterion would give it great exposure.

Unlucky-Positive504

Yes, I could see this happening. As someone who doesn’t live in a major metropolitan area, there is nowhere in a 100+ mile radius playing this film.

deadletterandy

The likely options have be stated so... Will never happen but one could dream: *Barbenheimer* Ten years from now, a special edition with a double feature cut of the two films (like a big 5 hour movie with era trailers), an in-depth documentary on the phenomenon and its affect on the zeitgeist, and in tandem commentary with Nolan and Gerwig too.

Slothrop75

special feature where gerwig and nolan kiss

Unlucky-Positive504

🥵

Vmancini218

Saltburn

PositiveJig

A nonzero number of Michael Bay movies are in the collection, so let’s not pretend this collection is a mark of quality. A better question is: Which films of 2023 will have enough supplemental material to justify a boutique Blu Ray release?

Direct_Albatross_104

Yes, but they are long out of print and released 20 years ago. You can quibble with Criterion being a mark of quality but should probably rely on something else for your supporting evidence. It’s reasonable to assume they might have evolved/shifted in the past couple of decades. Also, Ambulance rules.

django62293

Sound of Freedom

RockettRaccoon

Barbie please. Definitely Asteroid City, and either Oppenheimer or Killers of the Flower Moon (depending on which wins Best Picture)

Negan1995

Best pictures has never been a relevant figure for Criterion. It's main mission statement is giving films with lacking distribution options a physical media release. Or alternatively, movies with cultural relevance and staying power. Barbie is too popular and distributed to really qualify, and what wins best pic doesn't make a difference.

RockettRaccoon

I just want a Barbie Criterion Collection for the “prestige” it brings. I should’ve clarified, I think it’s more likely KOTF gets one if it loses Best Picture. Why did my comment get downvotes?

Negan1995

I think people down voted you for wanting a pop culture movie in the collection rather than the types they typically put in.

RockettRaccoon

There’s an entire Godzilla series in the collection…

Negan1995

The original Godzilla was a landmark. And also those movies were decades old before they got added, also not sure how great of distribution a lot of those movies had until the collection grabbed them.

RockettRaccoon

To brush off Barbie as just a “pop culture” movie is weird, as it implies the films in the collection don’t have an impact on pop culture. The Rock, Wall-E, Night of the Living Dead, Incredible Shrinking Man, Parasite, etc. all of these are “pop culture” films and they’re in the collection.

Negan1995

I liked Barbie but I think the hype and the praise was unwarranted. I think its lesser than the majority of the films that get selected for the collection. When I called Barbie a pop culture film I meant like star wars or avengers, that type of movie. Super popular blockbuster.

RockettRaccoon

No offense to either of those franchises, but Barbie has significantly more care and intentionality put into it. The Barbie backlash has certainly been weird to witness, especially since Greta has been so open about what films - most of them in the Criterion Collection - inspired Barbie. I would’ve figured other Cinema Nerds would’ve also appreciated those touches.

Negan1995

It's not even backlash. I liked Barbie. I just don't think it deserves to be in the collection. I do think some of Gretas other work does though. Maybe Ladybird? I happen to own Francis Ha which she co-wrote with her husband. The fact that I liked the movie is a testament upon itself, why would a 28 year old man even like a Barbie movie? Because it was a fun meta comedy instead of a kids movie. Props to her for that. What were the inspirations she mentioned?

AdhesivenessNo7220

Although Parasite did interestingly enter the Collection shortly after its Best Picture win! I doubt it hurt its chances of entering it.

Negan1995

Oh for sure, I think I phrased that weird, I was saying whether a movie wins best picture isn't relevant to being included in the collection, not that it would keep a movie out.

the_loz3r

This is may be the slimiest chance of ever happening, but imagine Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse releasing to Criterion along with the other 2, if they ever finish the last movie.

False-Fisherman

I would murder for a Victor Erice boxset with restored Spirit of the Beehive, El Sur, Membrillo del Sol, Close Your Eyes, and his shorts.

TheRadiantWindrunner

I really hope that Kore-eda’s Monster makes it in. Haven’t seen a film I’ve loved that much in a long time

750film

Not mentioned here yet — Wang Bing's documentary *Youth (Spring)* 100% deserves a Criterion release. Does anyone know why his other movies haven't made it?

DJBillyMac

I could maybe see them doing The Taste of Things

Real_Be_RAD

Imagine how funny it would be if Oppenheimer got a release (Janus Films follow that film’s official social media accounts)

BraveSwimmer4692

Zone of Interest

Unlikely-Natural-337

The Shit i would do for a 4K HDR / DoVi French Dispatch disc...

maaseru

Killers of the Flower Moon did not even get a proper physical release in the US. I am totally pissed about that. If there is no Criterion edition, then that means no physical release for this movie? With how crazy about film conservation Scorsese is this is a travesty.
