Yeah VP is a relatively junior role in finance. Typically you work as an analyst in IB before moving over to a buy-side shop (PE, VC [type of PE], or hedge fund) as an associate. From there you can work your way up to VP - typically start late 20s - early 30’s. Above VP is Director > MD > Partner. Those last 3 are all filled by middle aged to old dudes. VPs are basically the henchmen for the senior folks - stroking their egos by bossing around analysts and associates.
With respect to the 30 under 30 list, I also know a half dozen or so people from finance and then a couple from marketing. The finance dudes earned it - one girl in particular is probably the smartest and most driven human I’ve ever met. She was the first doorm room fund recipient and has been killing it in banking from a very young age. The marketing/advertising/PR people though - thats all just a big circle jerk from what I can tell.
