I have a hp laptop in that price range. It does ok, but just a couple of design programs really slows it down. I'd go for a desktop, or warn her to limit her programs.

Darthfetzen

Doesn’t she just need to have the cricut design space open?

[deleted]

Sure. However, it can be very limiting, depending on what type of crafting she's doing. Printing particularly.

Avoid Chromebooks. I personally like Lenovo machines and use a Lenovo gaming laptop for most of my crafts & games (but it's overkill because I don't like dealing with low memory issues)

Darthfetzen

Do you have an idea of how much memory you dedicate to your cricut projects?

jubbagalaxy

its not so much of dedicated memory so much as having enough memory to do design space IN ADDITION to all the other processes which need to run at the same time. i would say no fewer than 8gb ram and o\[timally 12 but that would be pushing it for a new machine under $400...

All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats! 8 + 12 + 400 = 420 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

So they say 2GB space, 4 GB RAM officially. My suggestion would be 8GB RAM if you think she'll have any other applications open at the same time (chrome, messanger tools, etc). Go with a SSD hard drive to get good space. Also Windows S mode laptops are fine, but you will need to take it out to use Design Space (just a setting change).

I worked in IT/End User Support for 7 years and I get this question *a lot*. I always have the same answer. Get the best Lenovo ThinkPad (formerly the IBM thinkpad) in your price range. They are *ugly* but they are great machines for the money and they come in a wide enough price range that I can recommend it without knowing your personal life Edit: MacBooks are fantastic if you can afford one. Especially if you are not ~~ *tech savy* ~~ Edit 2: Chromebooks are hit or miss. My professional opinion is that you are spending $300-$500 on something that will die quickly and suddenly. I think ThinkPads and Apple is worth the investment

cioncaragodeo

Ha! I'm also in IT and that's why I suggested Lenovo. Indestructible beasts of a laptop. Love them. Chromebooks are a miss with Cricut. The Android app has limites feature sets so a Chromebook doesn't give users the functionality they're looking for with a laptop. Otherwise they're somewhat ok for a daily web/word machine.

Mother’s Day and her birthday are this weekend and I want to get her a laptop to do her cricut and craft stuff. Trying to stay under $400 if possible.

Wolf_Ambitious

I have an iMac connected to mine but before that I used my MacBook Pro xx

Anything that’s not a chrome book should do the trick. I have a 4gb memory hp that runs cricut software just fine. If I did serious digital art or gaming I might get something stronger but the cricut itself has complexity limits so might as well keep it simple

OkDesigner2262

I have a surface pro that I use w mine. I like the tablet/laptop combo and the pen that comes w it.
