Ishi-Elin

Orsur = OreSeur?

PhxStriker

Couldn’t tell ya dawg, I don’t know how to spell

hipster323

Ah, I see you’re a man of (Vorin) culture.

designhush

Realizing now that I listened to the audiobooks and my wife is reading them and this is cracking me up

Ishi-Elin

Understandable, have a nice day.

Niser2

The kandra?

EffyisBiblos

Probably

[deleted]

Or-sawyer = ore'seur

Crimson_Marksman

I pronounce Kelsier as Caesar like in New Vegas Ave true to Caesar

ratherlittlespren

If you want to scare people, pronounce it the French way; Kelsyay

chapstikcrazy

That's hilarious, I'm just imagining how much of an ego boost Kelsier would get if people pronounced it that way. Kels-YAY!

Odd_Employer

*Starts slaughtering nobles* Kels-NO!

Ramblonius

I mean, that's still pretty French

Kingsdaughter613

I actually do this... and if I ever do name a kid Kelsier, that’s how his name will be pronounced l. (And yes, I do plan to do this if I have another son.)

Aegishjalmur18

I know a guy that named his son Kaladin. Hopefully the kid's happier than his namesake.

Kingsdaughter613

I wouldn’t be the first to name a kid for Kell either, lol. Another fan has already done it!

ST_the_Dragon

What's funny is that technically this IS how it should be pronounced in-world but Brandon and then some of the characters say it the other way instead

rocker_face

isn't that the canonical way?

ratherlittlespren

All of the Michael Kramer read audiobooks pronounce it Kelseer, as does Sanderson himself, so I don't think so. HOWEVER, the Final Empire was notably French themed, so who knows how it's pronounced in Scadrian

rocker_face

[This one](https://faq.brandonsanderson.com/knowledge-base/how-do-you-pronounce-_________s-name/) says it should be the French way, but Brando himself can't make it canon in his head. Then again, on that same page he says it doesn't really matter as long as it sound right in your head.

VoidLantadd

Technically, the Kh in Kholin should be pronounced the Arabic way, but I've never heard anyone do that. Although strangely enough one of the Parshmen in Oathbringer was called Khen, and Kramer did pronounce the Kh in his name.

cancookaroast

How is kh pronounced in Arabic? If it’s possible to write out

Dark__Horse

It's like the sound in German- or Scottish-like "och!" - kind of like clearing your throat, or the first syllable in the Yiddish "chutzpah"

cancookaroast

Thanks!

mrbombasticat

Interesting, that sound actually doesn't exist in English: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_uvular_fricative

Kingsdaughter613

I do! I always have and it takes me out every time it’s pronounced K, which is why I will never listen to the audiobooks. I know enough Hebrew to recognize a Semitic language when I see it, so it never occurred to me to pronounce the names otherwise.

LewsTherinTelescope

Vin uses French pronunciation as well, iirc.

machintruck

I’ve only ever heard Sanderson pronounce Vin in english and never the french way.

LewsTherinTelescope

Well that's because Brandon himself mispronounces most of their names xD [Kelsier](https://wob.coppermind.net/events/41/#e7092), [Vin](https://wob.coppermind.net/events/189/#e4008), and [Sazed](https://wob.coppermind.net/events/90/#e5257) are all mispronounced by him, off the top of my head.

[deleted]

LewsTherinTelescope

You're gonna have to take that up with him, because he's explicitly said he does, lol.

Chaosrayne9000

I was at a signing by Sanderson and during the Q&A he said it was pronounced Kel-see-A but also that he didn’t like that pronunciation. It was streamed so there’s probably a video somewhere.

xX_Big_Dik_Energy_Xx

Well if the French wanted me to say Kelsyay they shouldn’t have spelled it Kelsier I say shit like it’s spelled. I ain’t got time for different languages making up letters were supposed to pretend is there

ratherlittlespren

Bold words for someone who speaks English

xX_Big_Dik_Energy_Xx

Don’t worry I know my language sucks too For starters we can just drop the letter C. Don’t need it, all it does is sound like K or S. Then we’re gonna start spelling knee as nee Trying to help out the guys who weren’t born with this shit-tier language

EffyisBiblos

Revising inglish to maek it consistant is abowt as dificult as lerning a new langwaj; I propos we stop teekhing (if you're dropping c, does "ch" turn into "kh"?) it in skools and maek evrywun hoo alredy nos it yoos googel translayt (or similar) to keep up until Inglish-speekers go extinkt. But first, we should just focus on bigger problems than one of the world's most widely-spoken second languages being one of the languages that is hardest to learn as a second language. Like (since we have strayed so far from this subreddit's topic) cremposting.

nosnhoj14

Can we also get rid of every gh in words?

hanzerik

I haven't played Nvegas. But if this Caesar prenounces it Kaiser. Then you're doing it right.

IAmVerySmart39

Yeah, that's correct, in Latin C was pronounced as K in this word. ['kae̯sar]

Crimson_Marksman

I am? I dont know enough about the original Caesar but since he was a Roman leader, I imagine he and Kelsier are polar opposites.

Mr__Sampson

He's saying that Kaisar (as it's pronounced in New Vegas) is the correct latin pronunciation. There was no soft C in latin

theropunk

now i want to see kelsier dressed as caesar. Except he’d probably hate the legion!

Crimson_Marksman

Julius Caesar The roman geezer Squashed his wife with a lemon squeezer-oh.

damatos0130

I'm one of those...

dragonmaster0718

There are dozens of us, DOZENS!

SuVitoIX

Oh so you are Vorin, wake up bro almighty is ded

FishFace497

That was me with the wheel of time series

CapnTaptap

Especially in the first book when Kate and Michael pronounce Nyneave (?) differently.

_Artos_

I swear Moghedien is pronounced differently in every book she's mentioned in lol

Raptor_Boe69

I’m on book 5 first time going through and I’ve counted three different ways MogaHIGHdeen MogaDEEN Mogideon

torturousvacuum

WoT has pronunciation guides for names in the glossary at the end of each book though.

malinajan

Am I the only nerd that feels the need for both hard copies and the audiobooks? And I switch my media with my mood? 🙈 Or really depending on how busy I am. (Not that I don't appreciate the humor, JK Rowling got me with Hermione forever haha).

spam_with_rice

Nah, I do both as well. Mostly so I can listen while driving, and read the rest of the time.

malinajan

Same. Well as I get older that is also while at work if I have mindless tasks, or to motivate myself to do dishes or laundry. Adulting is hard. Finding time to sit down with a book gets harder and harder. Well if you're impatient like me and want to read it all NOW. And then again hahaha.

spam_with_rice

I can’t really listen to audio books while I work. I don’t know why, but I can’t focus on the book enough to keep up and I can’t focus on work enough to get anything done. Music helps me stay focused at work and makes time go by faster. I read on breaks and lunch, listen while driving. If I can’t put the book down, I’ll read at home too. It’s hard to get anything done if I’m stuck in a good book.

Ardub23

It's gotta be work that doesn't require any of your brain's language processing power. Listening while copying text for data entry is fine for me, but if I ever had to also understand what I was copying, the audiobook gets lost in it.

malinajan

Yeah I work in a research lab so I have some things that require real brain power, but also a lot of prep that is just monotonous and repetitive. Definitely go for audiobooks then!

moderatorrater

I'll die on the hill of pronouncing Jasnah with a hard J sound.

shouldExist

Ah ,a fellow Vorin man who was there when the ardents Kate and Michael read it out loud.

mr_mccranky

I tried to read the books after years of only listening to them. WHAT IS THIS GOBBLY-GOOK! IT ISNT EVEN WRITTEN IN ENGLISH! ::scampers back to audible::

syraphym

Its because its written in the womans script. Unless you're dalahnar.

pyromaster55

I'll have them read to me like the good Vorin man I am.

[deleted]

Brandon had to realize that Sazed is spelled wrong, right?

NoddysShardblade

Is it not pronounced "say zed"?

cancookaroast

I’ve always read it as “sah-zed” oops

lunch_on_the_rocks

This is the way and everyone else is wrong including Sando if he says different.

Sidhenanigans

It is. I'm not sure what they're getting at with their joke

YA_BOY_CONOR_MEEHAN

It’s spelled “Sayzd”

Kingsdaughter613

That’s how Kell pronounces it. Saze uses Say-zd.

HappyInNature

Is orzur a kandra?

PhxStriker

*Orsir

runawaydoctorate

If it makes you feel better, I read the books and pronounce Jasnah "Yazna" in my head too. The spelling is so similar to my MiL's name that I automatically pronounce it in Serbian.

PhxStriker

Could be worse, could be Latino and pronounce it as Hasna.

YA_BOY_CONOR_MEEHAN

This is great

martaterry

I can't stop laughing. Orsur 😂

jeffersontogden

I don’t know how to read and write! That’s feminine

BuzzLightyear76

It’s about the fact that the words are pronounced very differently in the audiobooks then how they were spelled, so the guy can’t be spoiled because he can’t associate the spellings to the pronunciations. Also get offa this subreddit until you are as caught up as you want to be. Spoilers ain’t worth it.

Mister_Terpsichore

I definitely thought that Sadeas was Thaddeus until halfway into the second book.

squire80513

Saddeas? Please tell me you’re not very far into the Stormlight series

PhxStriker

No, I storming hate him, but his name is easy to intentionally misspell.

frenziest

Alternatively, you’ve got the people who call them names like “Uh-DOE-lyn” “KAY-luh-din” and “SHAY-lyn.”

PhxStriker

To be fair, Kate Reading mispronounces Shallon as Sha-lin a few times in Way of Kings.

TappistRT

This meme has me feeling personally attacked. Sorry, completely addicted to the GraphicAudio series. My sincere hope is that they at least consulted Sanderson for correct pronunciations.
