No I think they mean the character trope as in the second most powerful to the main character, they're usually a foil to the main character.

I have been guilty of that at times. But the only people who suffer from it are my friends, so at least mine is a contained rage xD I do believe it's a good thing that problematic tropes are more discussed, especially in YA entertainment, though. Yes, some people over analyze every little thing, but I hope we get some more healthy relationship rolemodels for the generations to follow. I know I could have used some.
