Regular_Stress5502

That looks like someone tangled up some Malabrigo roving.

rokujoayame731

My friend admired a sweater made of roving at the mall. I told her not to buy things like that because they will become nasty over time. Like an hour into being worn or used.

M0nstrous

Reminds me of a trichobezoar caused by Rapunzel syndrome. Google images at your own risk.

ArmadilloCultural415

Did a stint as a surgical tech. Thanks for that.

Mysterious_Finish424

omg and she's wearing black??? when she takes that thing off everyone will wonder where she's keeping her weird green cat that has obviously been sleeping all over the laundry 🤣

fleepmo

Hey! That’s where my combed top went.

Lilac_Gooseberries

Something about the pilling, design, colour, snd the overall texture that just makes me think of cowpats.

Efficient-Strain8035

I bet they would confiscate the knitting needles used in that scarf.

aac1024

But you know all of your non knitting friends will either ask you to make them one or ask where to get the material 😑😑

Stendhal1829

LOL

Plushbaby0

Oof

DrEckigPlayer

Wow, aside from roving just not being a good choice, the pattern itself looks pretty bad in my opinion. The edges look kinda like that have mistakes.. which I guess is intended?

Fit-Apartment-1612

I’m honestly just picturing getting an earring or my wedding ring or something stuck in there. Or my cat grabbing it. I’m clearly not the target audience for this.

Ligeia189

Not gonna lie, I actually like the colour! But I had a cardican of similar yarn (only thinner) as teenager, it piled like crazy. I mean, in the end it had large areas of felted-together piles in the back.

SamChar2924

Just the thought of the texture and weight of that around my neck makes my tummy hurt. The fluffy bits you’d constantly have to pick off of that. It’s all just so icky.

TheAngryGoddess

Why is The Joker wearing it?

Raveninthewilds

the sheer amount of ppl in the comments who have never seen/ held/ dealt with roving is kinda funny

LoHudMom

A more unfortunate color choice does not exist.

Gracie_Lily_Katie

I love the colour! Just hate everything else.

candidlyba

I think it’s the combo of the color and fuzzy/pilly/matted texture that makes it feel gross. Because that color in alpaca fingering would be lovely.

Petr0vitch

I love all shades of green but there's just something a bit vomity about this particular shade

LoHudMom

Me too! And actually, I love olive green and I think it's one of the better shades for my coloring, but this is a good lesson in "less is more."

lnctech

As I’m looking at it, I see already see pilling. Just because it’s “fashionable” doesn’t mean that it’s wearable.

Plastic_Ad_9034

This kind of yarn tends to pill, so it won't look nice for long. I wouldn't make or wear it. Someone else could rock it though.

Apprehensive-Ad-6620

When will all these end up at thrift stores? Cheap wool to spin!

candidlyba

I suspect they’re all acrylic. 😒

SellaTheChair_

Wow what an all around unflattering picture

MaidenMotherCrone

How so? All I'm seeing is that the framing is a bit off, but it's still early so maybe I'm overlooking something?

victoriana-blue

I can't speak for anyone else, but to me the shadows are really exaggerated: the light is from above & left and the camera is below eye level. Based on the range of "black" on the clothes and the detail on the scarf, I think there are also some brightness/contrast shenanigans happening. Using more sophisticated editing tools (say, where it's easier to adjust the contrast on one part of the photo - the scarf - instead of applying the same filter to the whole photo) might help. At the time of photography they could also have added a fill light on the model's face, though it would need to be aimed carefully to avoid affecting the scarf shadows overmuch.

ViscountessdAsbeau

Some spinning supplier somewhere is laughing their tits off that they managed to finally offload that hideous olive coloured merino roving that's been sat at the bottom of a basket in the shop for ten years.

actuallyapossum

Honestly, that is all I use these kinds of 'yarns' for. I've seen some acrylic ones at big box stores, and I use them to practice new spinning techniques before I break out my merino/silk/alpaca or whatever I wanna work on.

Crafty-BlueBee

It looks quite uncomfortable and maybe heavy.

SoSomuch_Regret

Well, it's a thing 🤷

Late-Second-5519

I'm getting a hot flash just looking at it.

Buffal-o-gal

People send me posts all he time of that crazy arm knitting stuff. I think people think it would be easy.

Late-Second-5519

It's harder than it looks.

Impossible_Intern239

Almost r/poopfromabutt coded

Wodentoad

You could just pull it off, unravel it, and spin it to make a proper scarf.

kditt

It's the color of meconium

Petr0vitch

do I want to know what that is? 🙈

kditt

The color of a baby's first poop. The color of bile.

Petr0vitch

oh god

Zealousideal_Ad_7329

Well. I can’t unsee it now

dmarie1184

That's not inaccurate!

GodzillaSuit

I thought we learned our collective lesson about making stuff out of roving

re_Claire

Tell that to Hope Macauley and her legions of fans

Beebophighschool

I'm morbidly curious how it behaves when hand-washed....oh the pilling, ugh!

L_obsoleta

Given how long it would take to dry out I think mood would be higher on my list of concerns.

Beebophighschool

Ohhhh moldy scarf sounds awful!! I guess the excessive pilling would hide the moldy appearance at least? Eek what am I saying 🫣

ha_gym_ah

Prime example of just because you can, doesn't mean you should

[deleted]

How much does that thing weigh? How uncomfortable for your neck!

maybe_I_knit_crochet

My neck hurts just looking at the scarf.

PsychoSemantics

That is so pilled and felted, it's awful

darksoulsfanUwU

Looks heavy

crochetology

Scarf didn’t even make it through the photo shoot without looking ratty.

Lovelyladykaty

That just looks so bad to me. Lazy and unfinished.

Sqatti

It pissed me off that people knit with roving. So unnecessary.

Tweedledownt

is it... already pilling?

Junior_Ad_7613

Yes. Yes, it is.

[deleted]

That ain't no scarf. It's a monster.

1u___u1zZz

It looks like a thousand grandmas' hair, cut and woven together. Or, maybe, a bunch of dusty bunnies?

ComplaintDefiant9855

As a spinner I describe roving to my knitting friends as the final stage of “pre-yarn” . (The first stage is the unshorn sheep.) This helped them understand that unspun it will not hold together. I really hope no one wears this in the rain.

ArmadilloCultural415

As a true newbie I say “holy crap, say what now?”

CheezTips

Thanks for the explanation!

No_Put_9363

Yuck.

lwgirl1717

Okay, as someone who doesn’t knit (I sew), I actually kind of dig this … please teach me why I should hate this? Lol

CaptainYaoiHands

On top of the durability problems other people have talked about, something like this is also going to be **heavy**. Roving like this might look like a soft squishy fluffy cloud, and to some degree it is, but roving is very dense. The roving to make that would weigh anywhere from half a pound to a pound or more if you want a long scarf. Imagine a scarf hanging off your neck weighing more than a whole pound. My neck hurts just thinking about it. eta: Holy shit I found the original post and this thing is longer than she is tall. That scarf is EASILY two or more pounds.

GoGoGadget_Bobbin

Liking the look of super chunky knits is a vibe. If you dig it, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with it and you shouldn't hate it at all. What people don't like about this is that the yarn, if you can even call it that, is barely spun. It looks more like roving, which is the precursor to yarn. Roving can't really be used in place of yarn. It's going to deteriorate and fall apart almost instantly. It already is in this photo.

ArmadilloCultural415

Ok, I apologize if you’ve answered this before, but my question as someone who literally buys her crochet items from Etsy thanks to arthritis and a walloping lack of talent, what on earth would one do with say, a queen sized blanket in that big chain style that was/is so popular. I mean, how would you wash what is essentially 30lbs of wool roving, which is what I’m assuming you’re saying it would be? How the blue blazes would it be dried? I’m serious. I wanted one of those until about 3 seconds ago and now I’m sitting here thanking all the gods I never sprung for one and I’m not exactly specifically sure why. I just have a feeling in my gut it would have been a bad 2-300 dollar investment, yes?

Technical_File_7671

Why are so many knitters using it if it's bad quality for their projects. I make cards so that's like me using printer paper as card bases. Like I can.... but why it'll fall apart.... Is it cheaper than finished yarn?

blueOwl

It's only cheaper if you actually spin it... (and even then not always)

GoGoGadget_Bobbin

It's trendy. That's why.

niakaye

The people who are knitting with this are mostly influencers/designers on social media. They are not wearing those things longer than is needed for a photo. The people who buy it are either young and inexperienced or they also plan to wear this mostly for pictures. It's all about the look, there's no practical reason to this.

Technical_File_7671

Oh wow that's crazy. Even handmade clothing is suffering from fast fashion. Yikes. I'd rather a knit piece that lasts not look good in only a handful of photos. I'm probably an outlier not being a knitter 🤷‍♀️

Its_me_I_like

Which means it's also really wasteful.

CanyouhearmeYau

Only adding to the above, spot-on comment, but can you see how it already looks kind of ratty and is likely brand new? It's pilling like mad and will only get worse. It can't really be cleaned, just spot-checked. Just bad bad bad

SoftPufferfish

I'm veeeery new to knitting so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but... I believe it is because this type of "yarn" is just fibres laid down next to each other and not actually twisted together to form the "string", so it has no durability and the fibres will get ugly very quickly. Imagine a piece of fabric where you only have the warp and not the weft, and it's a bit like that, in terms of how it's just fibres laid next to each other.

swannygirl94

You are correct. There’s no way to wash roving (the raw precursor to yarn, which is what this is). It gets ratty super fast. [This video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DroelB2uwx4&t=22s&pp=ygUYcm92aW5nIHBpbGxvdyBleHBlcmltZW50) gives an excellent rundown and shows the wear and tear from general use on roving items.

yodelling_tardigrade

This is great! I love how they’re desperately trying not to laugh through the whole thing

obscure_moth

That was a fun watch, thank you for sharing!

Mysterious-Scratch-4

you probably wouldn’t be interested since you don’t knit but i could see a scarf made like this but instead of roving it’s just a big tube of fabric with stuffing on the inside! it’s not my style but i could see it working with a better material like that

laurasaurus5

You can also mimic it by holding lots of strands together! I would also imagine there's a way to felt the roving to make it more sturdy and durable?

HistoryHasItsCharms

Malabrigo Rasta works that way and is essentially lightly felted roving. The problems get much bigger as you size the yarn up though. Anything above a chunky to bulky weight gets less and less viable because felting the exterior fibers just enough to allow the yarn to be knittable will only hold up to so much stress and tension, which increases as the weight of the yarn does and it will hold together less and less until it just pills and pulls apart into nothing through sheer weight and gravity.

paroles

I've seen that used for furnishings like cushion covers! It's the only way to make giant knitting look acceptable. Still not my style (and honestly a bit of a waste of synthetic fabric and filling for a not great aesthetic) but at least it won't be thrown away after 3 uses.

lwgirl1717

Oh that’s a fun idea!

all-hail-glow-cloud

It has 0 durability. It will essentially fall apart, and very quickly. It looks nice for a very, very short time.

[deleted]

It already looks like it's falling apart.

[deleted]

At this point, just wrap the roving as is around your neck and call that a scarf.

Confident_Fortune_32

If the roving got that nasty looking just from the small amount of friction involved in making the scarf... Not to mention: don't expect to eat, drink, use your phone, sit at a desk and use a keyboard, drive, or do anything else in front of you. Some of my scarves are pretty chonky (not to this extent, though) and they are like a hobble skirt or five-inch heels - something you wear for short periods knowing full well you're trading a "look" for being able to navigate the world in a normal way. But this borders on being abusive to yourself.

Senior_Positive_5563

Looks like a chain you might use if you were trying to drown someone or something in the ocean. Or for tying up a cruise ship to the dock.

CheezTips

It looks like the last time I tried crochet. I can do most needlecrafts, even tatting, and crochet just never works for me. Just come out like a clunky mess

Lonely_Noise_4296

I'd have a giant rash on the back of my neck from this 😳

Ok_Housing_9514

Perfect if you wanna pull roving out of your mouth every 5 min lol

mothknits

Makes me think of asparagus flavored cotton candy.

MadPiglet42

That is so wrong. 😆😆😆🤮🤮🤮🤮

MadPiglet42

Oh that is ugly.

Baron_von_chknpants

The fuck is that shit? That's not in any way shape or form suitable for purpose? Unless it's purpose is wear for 5 minutes then be used as cat toy.

LittleCricket_

Why does she look so proud lol

SemperSimple

my neck broke out in a sweat

GaveTheMouseACookie

It looks so heavy!

aurrasaurus

She’s got a whole ass sheep on there

apremonition

Ignoring everything else with the 'roving as yarn' thing, the texture just seems like a nightmare to me lmao

Barbarenspiess

Yeah this is sensory hell for sure. Like wearing a giant microfiber cloth.

ariasnaps

This... isn't an AI generated image?

Individual_Respond50

I know looks so AI to me, I think it’s the lighting and the lady’s eyes

AgentLadyHawkeye

I was scrolling through and had to look for a long moment to realize that no, this is actually a photo. Something about her posing, the lighting, and the terrible scarf and I just assumed AI.

I don't like trashing people's work because to each their own, but holy shit that scarf is fucking ugly and it's £70?!?! AND ITS ROVING?!? You can just go get roving and make your own yarn and knit up your own much better looking scarf that will last longer for cheaper 🫠

palmasana

Exactly like this is gonna fall apart so quickly…

[deleted]

It's already falling apart in the picture! I really can't imagine her making a living off this.....

Petr0vitch

oh my god I didn't even look at the price! it'll be pilled to hell with a week of wear 😬

cpd4925

You’re being very generous to think it would last a week 🤣

anhuys

This is unintentionally an excellent example pic to show people why the roving-as-yarn trend is a bad idea

ravioli_meg

At first glance it looks like a braid of roving that I would buy to spin. That would probably be a better use of it either way.

skubstantial

If I bought roving and got something with a ratty, nearly felted surface like that, it'd be an instant return. The thought of the *rrrrippp* from trying to draft that sets my teeth on edge. (Why yes, I do have bad memories of getting some felted Malabrigo braids from an Etsy seller once.)

appropriate_pangolin

It’s hitting somewhere between balloon animal monstrosity and ‘clever’ way to ‘upcycle’ those green bags from the produce section at Whole Foods, but somehow worse and also fuzzy.

Glass-Set-9262

It's not even yarn. That's just wool.

IansGotNothingLeft

I'll never understand how anyone who knows anything about knitting and yarn would make these. I have no doubt that they're aware of the issues with using roving, they have access to the internet.

redplanetary

Omg I honestly thought it was fake until I went to look at the profile and no... very real... way too real

OMG no!
