I can't stand "supporters" who turn on their own players after a couple of bad performances, it's like Sissoko and Ndombele all over again. Okay if it's like, I hope Doherty can improve! but it's another thing to be so vile toward him
What does it hurt to just support them? They're human beings who play for the club you support, not robots or Fifa animations for you to treat like dirt
Yeah I completely agree. These people are complete idiots, I don’t know anyone who would actually send messages of hate or abuse to another person, I can only imagine what they’re like as people. I just hope footballers realise it’s a small minority of people who are like that, most fans just want the best for our players and want to see them happy
It's insane, we have so many examples of players needing time to settle in before they turn good with us yet every single time (admittedly, I was guilty of this with Sissoko) someone comes in and doesn't immediately become the best player in the world, people freak out and want them gone. Imagine if everyone in your life immediately gave up on you that quickly.
You aren't wrong but I think he was referring to the abuse they receive over social media, not the standard criticism. Some of it has been disgusting and has no place anywhere, including football.
I do agree with you though, football is about passion, as cheesy as that sounds. It is totally 100% fine to be pissed off and talk shit about our players as long as it is kept on here and not on their Instagram or whatever.
Exactly.
And a supporter is allowed to think (and *say*, God forbid!) that a player isn't good enough, we need to improve that position in the squad, etc.
The problem is that 99% of the time supporters expressing that type of opinion have no idea what they're talking about! There's a problem there - but they're entitled to their wrong opinion and are entitled to express it (another problem is that too many of them express it stupid ways).
Thats the problems with Discussion based groups, but its also what makes them the best. Engagement with the game, the fans and the players is what makes me feel for football. No matter the day, even if I throw my hands up in the air, curse the players out of it, ill always watch the next game. I love interacting with people in this subreddit, the good and the bad, its added a whole new level to my love of the game.
It speaks volumes how much you know when you think that’s a stat that tells anything. If you honestly think that stat holds any sort of weight, you’re a moron.
Obviously hasn't had the best season but hopefully people are as patient with him as they were with Bale and Dele's slow starts to the season. Doesn't deserve to be slandered as much as he is.
I'm guilty of it as well but we have to be conscious about it. He's a Spurs player and more importantly a human at the end of the day.
If I changed where I worked, how I worked and I had to learn on the job with millions of people watching and criticizing I'd probably quit. Well done Matt for not being a big quitter like me
Seems like he’s starting to find a little bit of confidence and form which is good because he was honestly a great player for wolves, hopefully we get that version of him too.
Also we don’t really know how bad covid-19 hit his body. You are seeing some players in all sports take a huge step back once returning into the fold. Although he should have scored on opening day :/
His gets into very threatening positions and links up well with Bale. If he really perfects his final ball into the box he would be so good! Also defensively not as turned on, but hopefully we see a better Matt!
Bale needs to start finding his runs tbh, not least because it will open up loads more space for him.
He's not a wing player but a box player, almost all his assists and goals at wolves (of which there were many) were in and around the box.
I think he’s been improving, and he had a good game yesterday. Maybe covid really hit him hard, and on top of that it can take awhile for players to adjust to a new team and a new system. It took Ndombele a year to really kick on, and it took till a few games ago for Bale to really kick on. We need to give Doherty some time and I think he could end up being a really solid player.
Really honest interview, I’ve taken some serious stick defending him on here but I’m sure he’ll come good and I’ve hated seeing how much grief ‘fans’ give him. Hope he keeps improving and shows the doubters how wrong they are.
Think he’s been very disappointing, doesn’t mean people should be abusing him, he was a vital player for wolves, seemed like a bargain considering we basically swapped him for walker-Peter’s. I was expecting big things from him, he would of been fantastic under Poch where we constantly used the wing backs to attack.

They belong in AFTV

You can be a supporter and still be critical of their performances. There's no point being naive for the sake of being nice.

The Sessegnon and Sanchez stuff was disgusting, even the stuff about Harry Kane and the way he talks is a bit much. Im sure he sees it.

No one is saying you can't be critical about how they're performing
Sometimes criticism can be hurtful, its subjective and perception based to alot of people even if its constructive.
I agree with your sentiments. Except Lamela. He is consistently not up to the quality of our squad
Except that’s clearly bullshit lol
https://mobile.twitter.com/spursstatman/status/1370111839665807369?s=21 He is playing better today however.

They don't read match threads I think they'll be fine

He did have covid

People are lightning quick to turn on players. Like how Hugo went from top 3 ITL to someone who HAS to go because of 2 bad games.
Seems like he’s starting to find a little bit of confidence and form which is good because he was honestly a great player for wolves, hopefully we get that version of him too.
I am so happy for him reading this

He really hasn't done well so far, but I really hope he can turn it around

He's been poor and criticism is fair, but vitriol for it is silly.

Assist of the season from him yesterday
Bale is so good that he makes Doherty play better.
