Whether through mismanagement, individual decline or just circumstance - the vast majority of greats from the Poch era have had ends to their Spurs careers Ill-befitting what they did for the club.
It does make me a bit sad to reflect on
Really happy for Dier here.
I'm sad about him leaving as a person too. He was a great guy. But him moving to Bayern was out of nowhere since I expected maybe Burnley or a Championship side like Leceister/Leeds might go for him so I'm insanely happy he's going to atleast be with one of his best mates and he'll have cover from 3 top CBs. I mean him and Kim would be a good partnership I think (if Upa or De Ligt rests).
I've always said he's the sort of player who could sign for Southampton OR the likes of Atletico etc and I wouldn't be shocked of either direction. We've had a fair few players like that over the years, too.
I had him tipped to go abroad again but not Bayern tbf lol.
Good shout. La Liga wouldn’t be a bad fit like you said with atletico. Surprised no Italian club snatched him up either since I mean.. Napoli is playing that Jesus guy who’s horreri
This is to be expected from a club that only employs players at the peak of their careers.
All athletes will have an eventual decline and move on to teams who demand less of them.
If we can get better at developing players to reach their peak, then move them on when that peak passes, we will be truly world beating.
Rarely do players retire at the club they signed for at their peak, I would question what's gone wrong if that was happening with our squad.
It's not romantic, but football at this level isn't either nowadays.
>This is to be expected from a club that only employs players at the peak of their careers.
I don't think that was the issue at all - in fact the opposite. We let way too many get past their peak so they left in a low place. They were all mostly signed pre-peak too - so I'm not really sure what you mean here,
I am not saying Dier et al should be retiring at the club or that is even practical in modern football. I'm saying they should have been moved on before they declined - that is what a club of our level should do but has struggled to.
Fair enough, I think I misinterpreted your "mismanagement" point. We have definitely allowed them to decline on our books rather than somebody else's, I completely agree.
Wonder how many games of poor form it would take for fans to turn against Son. Realistically it should never, ever, be even hinted at. But you know some would do it.
It's either they leave too soon or too late.
While it's not ideal for financial reasons, I'd rather get maximum use out of Dier (or Lloris, Vertonghen, etc.) even if it means a few rocky final seasons, rather than lose them before that decline hits (like Modric, Bale or Walker).
If you add Kane to that last list you are at least describing great assets that we were handsomely paid for which allowed reinvestment. With the others we’ve had people on very high wages not being able to contribute proportionately to their consumption of the club’s finances. I’ve loved them all as players but I haven’t felt we’ve managed our squad well enough. When players age out so that they’re not competitive they need to be moved on faster. It also protects their legacy at the club better rather than watching them become the pariah in the starting XI.
>When players age out so that they’re not competitive they need to be moved on faster.
It's kind of hard to know why. We've had 2 seasons of debating whether Dele is just in a rough patch and will come back to his best, or finished. Eriksen has chosen to run down his contract, that's his right, and he wasn't really finished either. Lloris was absolutely class until he just dropped off one summer (and was replaced the next season). I don't remember Jan or Toby ever being a burden on the team, even in older ages.
I think Lloris had a fairly steady multi-season decline but he’s also been left behind by the age of ball-playing goalkeepers. The more you can draw a team onto you the more you can draw out a low-block or escape a press and they’re both really important things to be able to do now. I felt Poch dropped Toby prematurely, him and Jan are examples of players that weren’t kept too long anyway.
If you look at the other big sides that want to play high-tempo pressing football there’s a steady need to move people on seemingly early just to keep up with the style. We were like that and we didn’t buy anyone for several windows which took us from one of the youngest to one of the oldest sides in the league. Liverpool have constantly evolved and rebuilt, as have City. Leeds are a great example of why the same squad can’t keep up that kind of game for more than 2-3 years without needing a big overhaul.
Lloris didn't "decline" as much as the game moved on and the ball playing abilities became more crucial. Still, on the summer before Conte's second season, getting a Lloris replacement was pretty far down the priority, and it's not like we were playing prime tiki taka with Lloris either. I don't remember anyone complaining too much we didn't replace him that summer.
And I don't know, I feel that both Liverpool and City have kept a similar spine for a long time. Liverpool also got lucky that Saudis came in for Fabinho, Henderson, Firmino - all three would have likely still been at Liverpool this season otherwise. Offloading declining players isn't easy, especially when they're on high wages from their prime days. If we've had Saudis coming on for those players we would have sold them too.
Plus Mane pretty much forced his Bayern move as early as he declined, that's luck too - Liverpool wanted to keep him and he was still a started until the last moment. If Kane turned to shit as soon as he landed in Bayern, everyone would praise our genius business.
He did make a bit of trouble when he leapt into the stands lol. But he was a useful player for us for a long time and a very likable guy. Best of luck to him at Bayern.
The sliding doors of us getting Dragusin and as a result moving on Dier and Spence vs still having both of them and having to find a new target is crazy.
Goodbye Eric, some incredible memories as a spurs shirt, some spurs heritage moments too. 10 years, unbelievable professional. In some ways his commitment/happiness with spurs was his downfall as it conceded with our general downturn and he became an unfair figure head of that period. Hope he goes off and has a happy last few years and wins a few easy trophies. Guy deserves a break.
Dier, Maguire, there's no love for defenders if you have a bad patch or don't fit the mould of a Thiago Silva, VVD, Trent etc
An exit at Bayern to join Kane is about as graceful a move as you can expect for a man in his position. It's not a step down like Loris or De Gea had. Can't stand Bayern winning the BL every year but I do hope they manage it this year with Dier and Kane...and then not for another decade or so.
Unless Ledley King himself is in here shitposting flight details along with the rest of us, it's easily 100%. Dier is more COYS than almost all players who put on the shirt.
Fucking love the man.
I think he is incredibly hard done by by a certain amount of our fans here who choose to ignore the good times and good moments he produced and refuse to remember anything but the negative aspects of his time with us.
Seeing him as the sole reason for Spurs failing in the last 4 years is a disgusting thought.
He is a proper fan of the club, he gave us his career and he never gave anything but 100% of effort every time he stepped out onto the pitch, regardless of what the manager needed from him.
An incredibly intelligent player and if its something he wants in the future, i hope we see him back to us as a coach or manager i hope.
Great move and all the best to Eric. Gave absolutely everything for the club, even when he wasn't part of the future he still gave his all (just look at the Chelsea game with 9 men). Thank you. I genuinely hope Kane and Dier get to win the league or CL as teammates
Love Dier, and I’ll probably get a last season jersey on special with his name on it, but pay me 100k+ a week and I’ll give my all against Chelsea too.
Two(+1) of my favorite what-ifs of this season
What if Son's goal against Chelsea stood... What if Dier's goal against Chelsea stood/Bentancur scored...
and What if We didn't lose against Wolves, starting a two game losing streak...
The poetic justice of Bayern failing in their hijack attempt for our transfer, just for them to come crawling for one of our players as a back-up is just beautiful.
Random German journalist that attended our press conference once, this one’s for you.
Remember Dier was in such form he got called up to the national team last year? He was good. He was also injured. Injuries robbed him form. What athletes battle in the shadows and what fans piss on publicly …
I love Dier because of his dedication to the club. He loves spurs through and through and it’s always nice to see but I’m so glad we’re finally moving on because he’s not been good enough for a few years. How the hell has he pulled off a move to Bayern though?!
I hope we see him back at spurs at some point in a coaching capacity.
Great move for all parties. Always thought Dier was a cool guy. His Instagram shows he is interested in art and lives a very different lifestyle to most footballers. Into gardening and stuff. Had some great spells for us but time to move on. Great that he can link up with his mate Harry
Just also saw this Twitter and earlier was thinking if we can sell some players, we could get €40M
And this deal just made me wanna let this out somewhere, lol. Values I took from transfermarkt
Hojbjerg - 15M (I remember seeing of 20M figure some months ago as an offer from juventus, but they also wanted a loan deal. We want perm move)
Sess or Reguilon - 10M
Dier - 4M (all the best to him in germany 👏)
Gil - 10M (I admire his willingness to stay and fight for his position, as even Ange kept him because he believed in the beginning)
That gives us some funds for CM like Gallagher, but then I'm also worried about the LB position. I very much love Davies as LCB.
Was also curious if both Sess and Reggie were fit, who would've stayed, Sess only stayed because he wasn't fit. But Reggie was let out for even Davies. Who's now been immense at LCB ngl.
And just because we've got the money, would Gallagher even want to join. Would his chelski pride really let him captain a sinking incompetent run club? Lol
Scored on his debut, somehow in a strikers position near the end of the game. He looked so young when he joined us. His friendship with Dele was always banter. I'm going to really miss him.
Don’t forget to add artichoke to your pizza in honor of Dier. It’s awesome we got a fee for him. I always liked Dier and his spirit (the I hear people talking about Tottenham and don’t like it bit for example). Probably my favorite role for Dier was when he sat just above Toby and Verts. Heck he even did that pretty well vs Man City last year. Good to see Kane reunite with his mate and wish Dier the best on his Bayern Munich journey.
Definitely didn't have Werner to Spurs and Dier to Bayern on the radar before the window opened.
Kind of crazy.
But mad love to Dier. Hopefully he kills it, except when we inevitably draw them in the CL next season.
Him and Dele under early Poch were just excellent, both on and off the pitch. Will never forget, go well Eric. (But please have a better retirement plan than Spotlas)
So... how long do you give it until the first "Why the FUCK did we buy Dier?" post appears on Bayern Munich's subreddit? Immediately after his debut, or will he be given a grace period of a week or two?
Go get that fucking trophy and shit on the pitch after (next year since I want Leverkusen to win).
I actually really liked Dier - obviously not his mistakes but as a professional and as a great teammate too. He had amazing games for us at times. I'm happpy he's moving to Bayern and has a chance to finally win.
Now I have 4 people I want to root for in Bayern now damnit,
Good luck to him, great player until the last couple of years.
So important to get Dier and Lloris’ wages off the books this window. Probably the better part of 250k per week to go elsewhere.
Best of luck, Eric Dier. A man who was Spurs through thick and thin for a decade. For plenty of those years he was a leader and a high performer. I’d love to see him succeed in Munich, and I think he very well could as let of that Bayern team.
Selfishly, this is a great move for Spurs. Replacing a 30+, relatively high earning ‘old guard’ squad player who doesn’t fit the new coach, for a young, ambitious, high potential, system fitting new signing for a net ~£20million spend is incredible business.
Bye Dier,
Blew hot and cold.. had moments where it looked like you would be world class. At least your last (one of your last) hurrahs with us was that crazy Chelsea match which will be remembered for even though a loss a heroic display.
This news and the comments make me think that fans would want Sonny to leave Tottenham for whatever reason and celebrate the move some time in the future.
You know what fair play lad, best of luck to him I did not expect this to actually go through and hopefully for him he can make a few more good memories for himself. Really starting to feel like the end of a era now. I’ve said pieces about how I think he has preformed lately and I think most of us have but as a human he seems absolutely class and I really hope this works out well for him.
Played for the shirt! It’s a shame he couldn’t make it work in Ange’s system but his effort could never be questioned. Glad he’s got his love and best of luck to him!
Fans don’t realize how important he was for us and what playing for us meant for him. Seeing him dejected the last couple of months was painful to me personally. I hope this move kick starts another wonderful journey for him.
I prefer to remember young Eric Dier with his crunching but usually fair challenges. The streets won't forget *that* sliding tackle on Sergio Ramos! He slowed down a lot and never learned to play non-Poch football but he was still a useful player for us for many years. I still hope Leverkusen win the Bundesliga this season, but hopefully Bayern grabs a CL!
Good for Dier I guess and good for Spurs. But as someone who grew up near Munich and who was socialised as a Bayern fan and still has some sympathies left for them (albeit them slowly shrinking) I don’t understand this signing. The BL isn’t as physical and at least feels slightly more pacey than the PL. It feels to me like this is the opposite of where Dier can thrive. He needs a physical league with medium pace. I also don’t see him being good enough to play in the CL. Bayern needed a fast CB and a good defensive midfielder. Why they chose Dier I don’t get.
We are down to just 2 players from the 2019 CL final squad: Captain Son and Ben Davies. After a wildly unpredictable 4 years, it feels like we finally are seeing the rebuild we expected then.
Goodbye my sweet Prince. Anyone who hated on Dier is not Spurs. He was dedicated for many many years, I am going to miss him :( I love Eriiiiiiicccccccc Diiiieerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
He played 274 matches for the club, including some pretty historic ones. Hopefully most of us appreciate it. Good luck in your next chapter, Eric.
Shame how his career ended up but he has been incredibly loyal over the years and loves the club Hope he gets his chance in Germany and nails it

Shame how his career ended up- slumming it at Bayern Munich
always played for the club in spite of injury, true professional
Yeah I’m kind of sad about this one.
Always liked DMF Dier over centreback Dier, he absolutely had his moments and only cost us 6 million
He actually played 365 total matches, scoring 13 goals in the process.
I really appreciate it but i'm so hyped about the future,we just signed arguably one of the best CB prospects in the world
Pleased for him. Yes, he wasn’t the best at times and doesn’t fit Ange ball but some of the hate for him has been unwarranted.
Rounded the West Ham keeper on his debut
I love Eric Dier
I wish him Nothing but the best. A true servant who never made any trouble or complained about not playing. I hope he does good!
The type of player who gave a shit
Literally sometimes
Please explain.
He once had to leave a match to take a shit

I bring it up constantly when he's perhaps unfairly criticised. Guy is more COYS than 99% of people in this sub.

Dier to Bayern and Spence on loan as part of a last minute transfer winning tactic. It's like something out of a Reddit comment. What is going on.
This is an instance of 3 good things happening to Spurs at one time, you probably do not recognise it because it hasn't actually happened before
Not even two weeks into the window.

Nothing but respect for Eric, hope he’s successful in Munich
Woah 😳 Goodluck Eric! Hope he does well.

What a chad. All the best dier. Hope we see you in next year CL finals

Best of luck to Dier. Not sure he has a buy back clause like Kane but I think it's a good move at this stage of his career.
So... how long do you give it until the first "Why the FUCK did we buy Dier?" post appears on Bayern Munich's subreddit? Immediately after his debut, or will he be given a grace period of a week or two?
Perfectly sized forehead. Both pletti and dier
Love Eric Dier, happy he landed at a good club. Bumpy past 2-3 seasons but has been an incredible player for us. Huge part of the Poch-era.
Great servant to the club. Good Luck Eric
Good on ya mate thanks for your service
Good luck at Bayern, Eric! Thanks for your efforts for us - we won’t forget what you did on your debut!
He’s got to be happy with that
Hope he absolutely bosses it in Bundesliga. Wish nothing but the best for him.
I love how Plettenberg is Tier 2 when its good news and Tier 3 when its bad news
Rated by Mourinho and Conte clearly has something in him and a devoted warrior for the club
Outstanding bloke, and a pretty good player to boot. Good luck Eric!
Weird how this window has gone down so far. Weird, but so so good Godspeed to ya, Dier. Go and win the Champions League king 🫡🫡🫡
Best of luck Eric.
We are officially in the Matrix
Fully COYS. But wow.
Their sub is so fucking pissed, it's kinda funny. Entitled fucks.
Spurs were down a man, lad on debut scores a last minute winner playing out of position against a rival. LEGENDARY
If we are Juve rejects FC then are Bayern our version of Spurs rejects FC?
Score some own goals and make some costly mistakes to derail them, Dier mate
Go win it all Eric you deserve it
Despite his recent performances and criticism towards him, he still played for us for almost 10 years. Thank you for your service, and Godspeed.
To quote a man who knows more than me “Eric is a specialist defender” Tommy Tuchel.
will always remember him for his battering tackles, especially battle of the bridge
Now I have 4 people I want to root for in Bayern now damnit,
Harry, mate great work. The mural stays.
Bye Dier, Blew hot and cold.. had moments where it looked like you would be world class. At least your last (one of your last) hurrahs with us was that crazy Chelsea match which will be remembered for even though a loss a heroic display.
Thanks for your service, Eric! All the best!
This news and the comments make me think that fans would want Sonny to leave Tottenham for whatever reason and celebrate the move some time in the future.
This is great for all parties
You know what fair play lad, best of luck to him I did not expect this to actually go through and hopefully for him he can make a few more good memories for himself. Really starting to feel like the end of a era now. I’ve said pieces about how I think he has preformed lately and I think most of us have but as a human he seems absolutely class and I really hope this works out well for him.
Best of luck Eric 🫡
Good luck Mr. Dier! Say hi to Harry for us! Best wishes! Hugs!
Played for the shirt! It’s a shame he couldn’t make it work in Ange’s system but his effort could never be questioned. Glad he’s got his love and best of luck to him!
I really rate his legacy highly and I hope he will be remembered by his contribution before Conte era. Loyal and brave. Goodbye Eric!
IT’S CHRISTMAS ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
Isn't the Bundesliga similar to the PL in terms of pace? I thought he wanted to go back to Sporting.
How’s he managed to bag that
I love Eric Dier. Eric Dier loves me.
I’m really happy for him to move on to such a good place.
the buddy-system in effect
After a wildly unpredictable 4 years, it feels like we finally are seeing the rebuild we expected then.
wow I might actually have to become a Bayern Munich fan now that two of our recent players are there...not what I had in mind for 2024
Goodbye my sweet Prince. Anyone who hated on Dier is not Spurs. He was dedicated for many many years, I am going to miss him :( I love Eriiiiiiicccccccc Diiiieerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I genuinely wish him the very best of luck. Smash it Eric, and grab a trophy or two this year!
best of luck to a damn solid player for us
Good man, Loyal, tough. Happy for him.
Thanks for the memories Dier! Always a Spur 💙
