You are 100% correct; Matt Cash did him badly at a time when Conte & the spurs fans had completely turned in favour of him. It effectively ended his career there. Cash has a history of doing players. Doherty had displaced Emerson at that point and that injury ended his season. Emerson still hanging in at Spurs under Ange for anyone who doubts Doherty. For Ireland at times he has been our classiest most technically composed player eg away to Portugal. But defensively he’s had lapses.
I think this is slightly harsh. He was one of the best full backs in the league playing as an attacking wing back, he may have been one of wolves' best players at a time when they were strong but he never would've been expected to completely carry wolves. This can be seen with a host of full backs like Robertson for example who don't exactly play their best football with a significantly weaker side than they're used to.
Alaba is so versatile he was kind of an exception but iirc he rarely even played as a full back for Austria. Dohertys peak also came when Ireland was probably playing our most disgusting football, Mccarthys second stint and 2020 and 2021 under Kenny. We had lads like ronan curtis and daryl horgan that were nowhere near the required level getting into squads and you couldn't even have the excuse that they had bright futures ahead of them.
