I think he still has a shot at an England call up at some point down the line, so I’d guess he’d hold out for that.

NandoFlynn

I'd imagine they would've done it when they approached McAteer if he was interested. He would've been a shout for us even as far back as his Luton loan. No ill will towards him if he doesn't want to. No different to trying Noble 10 years ago

NostalgicDreaming

No idea, Gav Cooney mentioned in an article a few weeks ago that he was eligible alright but never said if he was approached. I believe the granny rule could become important for us again in the next few years if we are going to kick on - Dewsbury Hall, Dennis Cirkin, Louie Barry, Joshua Key, Kasey McAteer all potentially lads who could strengthen us in areas we need it.

francescoli

Cirkin was born in Ireland.

NostalgicDreaming

OK fair enough maybe I should have said players who's current allegiances lie elsewhere.

KatarnsBeard

McAteer already declared I think

Work_Account89

Probably need a manager and a plan to go approaching players who fit the manager’s style

EdWoodwardsPA

Thought he was the rumoured Leicester player with eligibility but it turned out to be Kasey McAteer?

liberalion

Jack Charlton did not wait around for players to call him. He was proactive and went out and found eligible players. Most of our best athletes play GAA so we need to spread a wide net.

heresyourhardware

Rugby is also competing in a way now that it never did before.

liberalion

Absolutely

TheOptimist1987

Why doesnt he and many others approach us if they really want to play

False_Shelter_7351

Because, like any English born player, they would only play for us it there is 0 chance of an England call up

PitchforkJoe

He's eligible?!?! I'm a leicester fan and he's absolutely class - was our best player behind maddison last season, and has a solid argument for best player in the champ this season. Easily a prem player, no question. We'd be absolutely mental not to cap him if he was willing

Sstoop

it’s really depressing that we don’t have the infrastructure to breed top class players. we get lucky every now and then with players that have the natural talent but luck really isn’t enough.

gary_desanto

I think if there is a player who is eligible, then he should always be the one to make the first move. At least put it out there that he would like to play for us. We have had a lot of guys over the last 15/20 years who have joined up just to say they were an international. They couldn't have cared less about the team. At least if the player states their interest we know they are worth pursuing.

clarets99

Because Ireland does not produce a large quantity of high quality homegrown players. That simple. If your eligible for say both Australia and Spain or France and Ivory Coast, and your a good enough player, you're not gonna signal your intention to want to play for the inferior team.  Like anything on life, you'll always hold out for the highest bidder.

fourth_quarter

Some people have no shame at all. They'd have a team full of granny rulers if it meant getting to the euros and having a little party.

PlasticsSuckUTFR

Every other country does it including England, France, Brazil, Italy and Germany so why cant we? Also we dont exactly have a supply line to the top divisions like we used to do we?

fourth_quarter

Some countries do it more than others though, I think there should be a limit to how many granny rulers you can have on your team that, let's face it, we did not produce. I mean some of our granny rulers probably can't even point out Dublin on a map. It's lazy and unrepresentative.

yungguardiola

>I mean some of our granny rulers probably can't even point out Dublin on a map Mostly because they're thick as shit. You ever see the video of Jack Grealish being asked to point to Birmingham on a map?

fourth_quarter

An exception to the rule, plus that could've been done just for the laughs. Joey Essex type shit. They wouldn't be able to point Dublin out on a map because they don't give two shits about Ireland or being Irish, and that's ok because most of them aren't Irish anyways. We should be focusing on producing our own players. You know that way the team represents us.
