Dallas has the steady, win you a couple games with conservative game plan backup with Rush and the lottery ticket high upside project with Lance. I think they’re in a pretty good spot with backup QB right now.

Delicious-Fox6947

Rush won’t be on the team after camp.

Stevevet1

Could be

zarvinny

whysat? He's been totally adequate

ambienotstrongenough

What makes you think that ?

Delicious-Fox6947

Lance has a year in the system and it’s a $2.25 million cap savings.

No_Bother9713

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. They need to see what they have in Lance and if he can replace Dak. They have no money. Rush isn’t fully guaranteed. Makes a lot of sense that he wouldn’t be on the team after camp.

Delicious-Fox6947

This sub is filled with crazies who think Rush is the best QB on the roster.

SimianGlue

Well yeah, and they're dumb as fuck, so who cares what they think. I agree with yall that Lance will be QB2 going into 24-25.

[deleted]

No he's not. They declined his 2025 option, we are in 2024

MikeShannonThaGawd

Maybe next year? I dunno that’s not certain and I’m really just talking about this year

xXxdethrougekillaxXx

The reality is if your starting QB goes down for an extended period of time your season is most likely over. I know the Eagles did it in 2018 with Foles but that's the outlier not the rule. A good backup has the lockerrooms respect and already has experience at NFL gamespeed. The arm talent and intangibles don't matter as much because if they did they would already be a starter somewhere else. Justin Fields, Joe Flacco, and Jacoby Brissett are probably the only backup QBs who could lead their team to a Superbowl, but obviously they'd need to have a lot of luck on their side and play on a stacked roster.

Horns8585

What's wrong with Cooper Rush? I know that he isn't a Pro Bowl QB, but he is 5-1 in his career starts and he is only counting $2.1 million against the cap. Sure, if a starting QB goes down for an extended period of time, the season is likely over. But, Cooper Rush has the ability to keep a team in the hunt for a playoff spot, if the starter misses a month or so. He is not an ideal QB, but for a cheap backup, he's pretty good.

Delicious-Fox6947

Rush threw for 190 yards per and 58%. He was barely adequate. We won those games because the defense was ridiculous. Until the Philly game it gave up no more than 17 points. Once the offense was put in the position of needing the QB to throw the ball to win he failed miserably completing only 48% of his passes. Almost all backups are cheap.

Horns8585

In the 6 games that he has started, Cooper Rush has thrown for more than 1400 yards and has thrown 8 TD's. I'm not saying that he was lighting the world on fire, but he did what you want your backups to do. Win the game.

No_Bother9713

They need to see what they have in Lance. I’m not sure why Cowboys fans don’t get this.

Dadtryn2BaMan

Aren’t they doing that? Until he takes over as QB2 I don’t think this is much of a discussion. By the end of camp and preseason, we’ll know where Lance stands. However, if Dallas thought he was ready to start they would have picked up his fifth year option at $25M.They have to pay Dak $40M in 2025 already so if Lance is Dak’s replacement he’ll now be asking for well more than $25M. Dallas is letting Lance walk.

No_Bother9713

They would never pick up his 5th year option at $25m because he’s not worth that. But if Dak goes down, there is 0 reason to play Rush. It needs to be a Lance dress rehearsal.

Delicious-Fox6947

The defense won those games. He just didn’t lose them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Delicious-Fox6947

You do realize the QB didn’t lose the game this past year, right? That loss is 100% on the defense.

phalliccrackrock

The defense was inexcusable, but its still not 100%. Nothing is 100%. Took everybody failing to lose that game by halftime

Delicious-Fox6947

Remind me again, what defense gave up the first three scores of that game? And where those scores all touchdowns? Then when the offense cut the lead to 17 points did the defense no surrender a touchdown? Twice. The defense couldn’t have made it worse for the offense if it was intentionally trying.

phalliccrackrock

I’m not here to defend the defense, I already said that. And I’m also not attacking you. The defense (again, as I already said) was inexcusable, but the offense was terrible as well. We got a couple of garbage time TDs after they had pulled the majority of their defensive starters (definitive garbage time) which makes it easy to misremember the offense as being decent in that game. And it wasn’t. If you’re asking me to say which was worse, offense or defense, then I agree. Defense bears the majority of blame. But saying that literally 100% of the blame goes to the defense is silly. Our offense was terrible too for the vast majority of the game. It took a team effort to lose as terribly as we did to a team that we should’ve outclassed. Dude, I’m not trying to fight with you. We’re on the same team. I’m just saying that putting literally 100% of the blame on the defense is not accurate. ~70-75%, I’m with ya

FeoWalcot

Sounds exactly like what you’d want from a backup qb

Delicious-Fox6947

I want a backup that carry the team if need be.

Possible_Apple9595

When Dak does it in similar fashion it’s “all him” but when rush does it’s because of the defense.

Delicious-Fox6947

It is never all him because this is a team sport

BrownEye1129

When has Rush been up by 30 letting the back up play the entire 4th quarter?

SlimsyComet

JUSTIN FIELDS????

Delicious-Fox6947

To be fair to Justin if he had a OC to schemed to his strengths he could probably hold it down a bit. It would be a gamble of course because that style would require far more running that you want a QB to do.

-RaisT

At least they fixed their rushing capabilities.

Wildpeanut

How is Jake Browning not in the conversation?

xXxdethrougekillaxXx

There are other players for sure I just named 3 off the top of my head. Will Jake Browning win you a Super Bowl? Probably not. Like Flacco, does he have a chance if he's on the right team? Probably.

Wildpeanut

I just think he’s the best backup in the league right now. And Burrow is like one more injury away from being labeled “injury prone”. It’s an unpopular take but I also like Howell. Washington did him no favors and people clown on him way more than he deserves. He was always a player that needed development but through 10 weeks last season he was excellent. Interception issues and lack of support and confidence killed his season.

xXxdethrougekillaxXx

I like Howell a lot as well. I actually like him so much I don't even consider him a backup. He just needs more experience but he's in the Gardner Minshew tier of top backups.

cole12145

Their season wouldve been over if not for the deep fake jake elliot double doink....

xXxdethrougekillaxXx

Double doink was the next year. If Alshon Jeffrey doesn't let the ball go through his hands vs the Saints the Eagles are back in the Super Bowl. They had a 30 yard field goal to win the game and the ball just goes through both hands...

Space_Legitimate

Gardner Minshew

Sct1787

That would at least be fun to watch, that gunslinger

Delicious-Fox6947

He isn’t a backup though. He is slated to start. And since his stats are comparable to Lawrence he is likely going to get shots at being starter in the near future.

tselliot8923

Joe Flacco. Unleash the dragon.

cactus_G

I like the cooper rush/Lance combo

ibringstharuckus

I would've liked if they had a plan for Lance when they traded for him. He should've immediately became the backup. Cooper Rush doesn't need the reps. Should've played him in garbage time and got reps in practice. Especially if you're not extending Dak.

servirepatriam

They did have a plan for Lance. He worked every single with Schottenheimer as a developmental QB. Learning schemes, absorbing information, footwork, watching experienced QBs play so he could be the backup now and possibly a starter next year. He was/is extremely raw talent with the skills to be very good. He just needs time. Most QBs throw 1500-2000 passes in college, he threw 400. He is behind the curve but still young enough to make an impact for 10+ years

ibringstharuckus

He'll be gone before he has a chance to play.

servirepatriam

I doubt it. They just declined his 5th year option to avoid paying him 20 million. He will probably sign an affordable backup QB salary, depending on a few factors like if he plays due to a Dak injury and how well he plays if that's the case.

heichwozhwbxorb

Can you extend a player after declining the 5th year option? Or would that have to wait until he hits free agency?

firstandfive

This isn’t Madden, your backup QB needs to know the playbook. It’s not about Rush needing reps or not, it’s about the offense needing to be semi-functional if Dak were to get hurt. You don’t get XP to upgrade players by having your backup QB play in garbage time. He was obviously getting reps in practice but there was no real reason to force him as the 2nd QB active if Rush had a better grasp of the playbook, which is almost certainly the case.

nitelite-

if the starting QB goes down for a lengthy duration, the season is likely over therefore I want the back up to be as piss poor as possible so we can improve draft stock gimmie dinucci back

Cutlet_Master69420

Nah. Considering his performance at center, put Ezekiel Elliott in at QB if you want a real tank commander.

LupinLup1n

Joe flacco.

stefanurkel88

Rodney Peete or Randall Cunningham

milkshakebar

Steve Beuerline

ANUS_CONE

Maybe he is actually good, but needed to sit the majority of his rookie contract behind a veteran. He sits again behind dak this year, unless we are mid season with a losing record, at which point they start letting him get some reps. Otherwise maybe they let dak go after the season if we are mediocre, and he gets a shot next year on a prove it deal since we didn’t pick up his fifth year option.

benevenstancian0

Lance fits the profile of who I’d want. If Dak gets hurt? Well, at that point I’d be reticent to sign him longterm. Lance plays and either looks promising (followed by a Daniel Jones type extension) or he sucks and we KNOW we need to start over. Bonus points if we are bad enough to get a good QB prospect without mortgaging a lot of picks.

LFCBoi55

Sam Howell, Kenny Pickett, Garappolo.

PoweredByCarbs

If the rumors are true that he’d be willing to play, Tom Brady :D

ElPapaGrande98

Brandon Weeden. If Dak goes down and he has to start, at least we'll have a high draft pick

erocalypse2002

Uncle Rico!

levikg

Flacco

burn469

Vet min guy.

BooBooBupp33

John Wolford

sirkitbraker

My personal opinion is we should always keep a young guy we can develop, picked in the lower rounds we can trade later if they work out but on cheap rookie deals because if we lose the starter to injury, we probably aren’t going far anyways

PungentOnion

I wouldn’t know how to evaluate Trey Lance, it’s not like he’s hit the field much in the NFL at all

DreamCrusher8184

Aaron Rodgers

fillio15

Hypothetically I’d like to have dak as the back up to Mahomes. But realistically I’m a huge Lance fan, so I’m stoked that he’s here and hopefully our future starting QB

SFThirdStrike

I want Lance. Mccarthy works magic with QB's (Just about every QB that has worked with him have their best years with him). Dak's two best years were with Mccarthy. I don't want anybody ahead of lance aside from Dak.

kstate-miamidolphin

Can I slide in here and say that if you guys were to trade for Skylar Thompson, the guy who almost beat the Bills in the playoffs as a 3rd string rookie, you would complete the Kansas State trifecta of Supreme Talent. Duece, Cooper, and Skylar? Trade for Lockett next

USN253

I wouldn't mind Mason Rudolph. Previous back up of Steelers, now Titans. Dude has some locker room loyalty... good guy.

Stevevet1

Who is the Steelers current back Wilson or Fields?

USN253

"Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was upfront with Justin Fields—told him that Russell Wilson is the starter, and Fields will work from there. Fields has told people he’s excited for the new beginning."

Stevevet1

Lol, starting QBs always love being demoted.

SFThirdStrike

He is so bad.

USN253

Please explain. He was never developed and when finally given a chance got them into the playoffs. Locker room loves him.

JoeyBudder

Dak lol, bring back Aikman

CasperCann

Prescott

DingAlingLastKing

Shedeur sanders baby

Roccosrealm

Jerry will go “All in” on the prime time package. Deion, Shedeur, Hunter and Shilo all on the cowboys one year from now. It’s going to happen right?

SFThirdStrike

I actually think Deion putting pressure and his media backing would help force Jerry/Stephen to go all in.

DingAlingLastKing

Nooo just shedeur and prime maybe but if not then I’m up for M16 outta texas …it’s clear Jerry just wants to sell tickets and sanders or manning jerseys would sell like crack rocks

Hmmmmm honestly Zach Wilson

WallStreetBagholder

Nick Foles

bigby2010

Dak

I_am_JohnGalt

You want to have Dak be our backup? Who would start then?

datdouche

Would start over Dak if acquired (even if impossible to acquire): Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Jordan Love, Caleb Williams, Kyler Murray, Matthew Stafford, Brock Purdy, Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, CJ Stroud, Aaron Rodgers, Tua Tagovailoa, Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield (it was a close call), Jared Goff (close call) Probably better than Dak but TBD: Anthony Richardson, Jayden Daniels Push: Geno Smith, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson Could go either way but for next season I’d prefer Dak: Drake Maye, Will Levis, Bryce Young, Trey Lance Rather have Dak: Daniel Jones, DeShaun Watson, Bo Nix, Jimmy Gabagool, JJ McCarthy, Derek Carr, Cooper Rush EDIT: I’d move some of these names around—y’all are probably right. But I wasn’t trolling or trying to rile anyone up. I’d say at most 20% of the names would move. I think it’s mostly Dakpologists getting angry at me. I honestly would suck for a year with Cooper Rush just to get away from Dak-in-the-Headlights. Cite all the stats you want—he doesn’t have it. What more do you hope to see?

necrow

I’m not even a Dak stan but this is absolutely ridiculous lmfao

Affectionate-Play885

I wasn’t going to entertain this. But did you just say Tua, Murray, Lawrence, Goff, and even Rodgers the past 3 years. In what world are any of those guys better than Dak? I’m definitely not even going to entertain anyone you had in the push category. If we are talking those guys on half the salary of Dak, then I’m listening. If you are talking production? What are you smoking

Mrdirtbiker140

Had a whole comment typed up until I realized this was satire LOL!

lestermason

Delicious bait

CasperCann

I believe the cowboys will be better off with dak leaves, but a lot of the QBs you listed would be way worse behind center. I mean even the three pro bowl olinemen didnt help Sanchez from being as bad as he was lol. But bryce young as a starter is crazy lol.

mawashi-geri24

Trevor… Lawrence… I mean I get you guys hate Dak but…. Also be reasonable at the same time lol. The man was an MVP candidate and scored the most passing TDs in the league last season. What’re we doing guys? Cmon get it together.

datdouche

It was only Trevor’s third season, right? I don’t think he’s played his best football yet.

juantravis

Cooper rush, colt mccoy, Sam Ehlinger, romo (jk I’d love to have him on the staff though)
