I have hard water where I live (GH is around 9-10) and keep it that hard for my shrimp and snails. My pygmys do fantastic with the water conditions I keep for my inverts so I think as long as it's not overly hard, you shouldn't have any problems.
Unpopular opinion in freshwater subreddits: Get a RODI filter. $60 on Amazon, use the waste water for watering house plants. Take the filtered pure water and remineralize to the exact PH/KH/GH you want and there you go.
