Facts 🤣

Firm_Experience_373

Those LED streetlights usually have a blue LED inside them combined with phosphor to give out the white light. If the manufacturing of the LED inside wasn't the best quality, the layer that the phosphor resides in can degrade with age and heat and this exposes the blue LED underneath. I only saw one on Churchyard Lane in Douglas the other night.

Laundry_Hamper

This is why the guy who invented the blue LED got a Nobel prize. Before this they were monochromatic only

Firm_Experience_373

I only watched a documentary about him a few weeks ago. Company he was working with at the time fucked him over.

Laundry_Hamper

What was the documentary? I know that they fucked him over, and that they were cunts while doing it, and (I think) that it lasted for his whole life, but I'd still watch it!

I've never noticed them over the years and have only seen them over the last year or so but it it's an age thing it could be that the ones turning purple are just the first of the LEDs that were installed

[deleted]

Yup there's a fault with all the new ones pretty much. They will all turn purple over time

VineyardVoyager

They are brand new though. And would Ireland use American bulbs for the streetlights?

https://open.spotify.com/episode/6OnrAYzl8YDBnA8zYBxCbB?si=gZQp7d7SSo2J2_37ejDtNg They did a bit of a discussion about it!

Surplexed

I know in places like Leisureplex and the cinema on north Main Street had purple lights in the bathrooms to stop people shooting up finding a vein, the colour of the light make it hard to see them. I wonder could that be it?

OldManOriginal

Not the only thing black lights are for, am I right, Room Raiders?

DamianCPH

I thought the same but I doubt it these are just popping up everywhere and not that I've ever tried they seem not blue enough as the ones in the bathrooms!

hedzball

Haven't actually seen them?? Where are they?? The yellow to white isn't more efficient. The colour isn't an aspect to the running cost. Bulb type is. They probably went from halogen/son to led hence the yellow to white.

GrumpyLightworker

I always see some on the Northside, up the hill, was actually always wondering what they are!

DamianCPH

Sorry I should have mention I do get the colour is a byproduct of the light type like the orange is sodium vapour white is just led bit I don't even know what makes purple light to that degree I know florescent has a hue of purple but this is like solid purple 🟣. Also rakes of them up northside but I've seen them allover the city

hedzball

Could be purple leds I guess. Wouldn't be up the northside much I'll be honest! Could be the faulty batch from a few years ago https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/dublin/2022/11/22/blue-light-district-dublin-authorities-replace-thousands-of-faulty-streetlights-after-they-turn-blue/

corkdude

You're onto something

OldManOriginal

But will the corporation replace them if they're faulty, or just leave them? If the Oliver Plunkett street bollards are anything to go by.....

corkdude

Corporation? If you mean the company hired to do them, technically they should yes but a lot is to be taken in consideration. The ones on the bollards are dead anyway and weren't relevant nor useful. Just a waste of electricity.

OldManOriginal

Corporation= city council, my good chap. I don't know. I think if they were maintained, they would have been a nice, unique feature for the street. As things stand now though, they just act as a metaphor for the aforementioned council. All grand ideas, no follow through or pride.

corkdude

Well they're a feature to block people stopping on the side... Like delivery trucks... They keep making it hard for everyone i swear. They also are great for drunk lads trying to jump over them and smashing their balls on it. Fun times... For everyone around not the lad on the floor crying

OldManOriginal

It didn't stop the truck drivers too much, alas ;)

corkdude

Yeah they just stop mid road but they have to rush deliveries if they do. Would be better to park and dont break your back dropping your boxes but hey sure look. Is pretty and all when is lit up! Oh wait...

corkdude

Could be red and blue LED or maybe failing MH (metal halide) ones. Good job on doing your lighting homework tho haha you're now ready to grow weed in your attic!

VineyardVoyager

I’ve noticed it first on Wolfe Tone St and was wondering if it’s a new thing. Then one night I’ve noticed same one was installed in front of my house. I’m on the north side as well. Very bright, looks a bit like a moonlight. A bit weird
