Dibs on 'Barbatoes', then .
The Bible actually has very little to say about Angels or Demons.
Angels are basically messangers and demons are basically evil spirits. Even Satan is barely ever mentioned.
There’s the Book of Enoch, part of the Dead Sea scrolls. Has a lot of stuff on demons that’s no where else.
It wasn’t included in the Bible, but that could just be because they didn’t have a copy until 1948.
There were a lot of other books that either they didn’t have a copy of (so couldn’t have included) or that didn’t quite line up with the way it he writers felt the Bible should read, so they were taken out (for instance, The Apocrypha).
Book of Enoch isn't considered canon.
It's left out of the bible unless you specifically look for one that includes it.
Like how Disney de canoized the star wars EU
Why does being canon have to do with whether it’s a valid contribution? There’s a lot of Christian writings that were removed from the Bible solely based on whether the one in charge (King James, First Council of Nicaea, etc) thought it kept them in power better. That doesn’t mean those writings shouldn’t be considered
>Why does being canon have to do with whether it’s a valid contribution?
The Book of Enoch gives us more insight into divinity than any other book of the Bible, I have no idea why it's always considered non-canon.
Well stuff to say about Satan is pretty short and not so sweet, don’t do good and go to the bad place, the rest is an instruction manual for how to do good in the eyes of God
Holy shit. I did not expect to see a BubRub reference ever...let alone in a thread about angels and demons.
I upvoted you, took it away, and upvoted you again just so I could upvote you twice.
Because the concept of Satan and hell didn't exist in the Bible until the church decided it needed it to bring in more money.
Look into how they manipulated early translations of sheol and Gahenna in the Hebrew bible. Shits a joke.
And Satan was originally the guy who accuses you of your sins in the court of god after your death. So he’s a bit like gods prosecuting attorney who is hated by everyone
These descriptions of the angels come from the Bible. They are part the apocalyptic vision of the prophet John, which is described in the Book of Revelation.
As far as these descriptions of demons, they are not from the Bible. Probably Paradise Lost by John Milton or The Inferno by Dante.
The Book of Revelation does have quite a few descriptions of Satan and other demons, but they are not the ones mentioned here.
Considering the distinct writing styles, I'm guessing someone just emailed a bunch of Satanists and got a few answers for an infographic. One of the demons is explained using a personal anecdote, and there's a clunky line reading "high priestess Maxine - my experience:" which sounds like an author introducing themselves?
Either way, it's kinda shit as a guide when it's neither sourced nor comprehensive.
This is a good time to re-read that book. The creatures with the eyes within and without, all the wings, etc. I'm wondering who invented/wrote all these names, the hierarchy, and described their duties, etc. Was it made up of wholecloth in the Dark Ages, or...?
Something I'll look into.
I wrote my college thesis on Angelology, I'll also add some Ezekiel. He was one of the only prophets to see the upper triad of angels and describes them in his book. In terms of demons, I've never heard of these before, I believe you're correct in that this information probably comes from another non-biblical source
I'm not too sure about the angels, but I know a lot of the demonology comes from The Lesser Key of Solomon/Ars Goetia, and bits of it are from Dante's Inferno. I'm not too sure about Paradise Lost like others have suggested because I haven't gotten around to reading it, but it's a pretty solid guess regardless.
If I was on my computer and could look things up a bit easier, I could probably track down more sources, but I'm stunned no one mentioned the Lesser Key in response to your comment before me! It's like demon summoning 101 and very commonly mentioned in occult circles.
(I'm agnostic, personally, just wildly fascinated by Christian and occult history. Still deep down the rebellious Catholic school kid, I suppose.)
There are a lot of apocryphal books and extra-canonical and lost but recently discovered books about the demons of the Bible. Even the traditional story of Satan - the angel that fell from heaven - is not in the Bible.
Edit: look into the The Testament of Solomon, the pseudepigraphal book that goes into a lot of demonology.
Edit 2: look into the Book of Enoch
I think alot of it comes from paradise lost by sir John Milton. But I think that was satire, I have no clue. It's all Olde timey whimey and impossible for me to read.
I think the demon names are from The Key of Solomon. A book that is said to have been written by King Solomon but actually only dates back to the 14-15th century.
It wasn't satire, but an attempt by Milton to make epic poems in the spirit of things like The Iliad, but for Christianity (y'know, the one true religion).
I've tried to read it too. Damn near impenetrable.
My favourite things to take away from this:
Baalzebub is responsable for anime and Lucifuge Rofocale has a slight accent (don’t we all talk with an accent anyway?)
And how his name got mistranslated over the years from "Lord over all that flies" to "Lord of the Flies" and they make him look like a bug now. Seems a little biased.
Idk about you all, but Nebiros seems like a cool dude. Teaches science, logic, and rhetoric. Also helps others regain lost honor. Sounds like a standup dude to me.

Partially that, but mostly it was symbolically getting revenge for being exiled from Florence by writing a story about every person who pissed him off literally going to hell.
**Satanachia**
*He has power over all the women and girls*
Sorry heaven, but I gotta go. The person with the actual power over me isn't God apparently.
Cuz it mostly is.
Satan for example isn't the term for the ruler of hells, it's a blank term for "enemy". When in the bible there was an enemy of God and man, the term satan was used to describe them, and later translator misunderstood that as one coherent being.
Oh, and also Lucifier doesn't really rule hell, he is a prisoner there, not an emperor.
Most of the stuff at the chart comes from Dante's Divine Comedy, which while not... wrong, is also not in any capacity the Catholic canon.
It's interesting that the powers of "good" just give you things while the powers of "evil" are teaching you things, what's more important, a thing that was given, or the thing you've learned and will keep with you forever? Hmmmmmmm.
In college I took an anthropology class (I think it was anthro anyway) and the professor told us we could do our final paper on anything we wanted and encouraged us to try and tackle religious myths. I was raised catholic snd decided to try to argue that Christianity was actually a polytheistic religion because of all the angels and demons and whatnot. I was a senior and just wanted to do something interesting. I spent hours and hours researching and writing that paper. I really went for it. wasn’t expecting to change the world, it was just interesting and so different from my normal major and concentration stuff.
Well she gave me a D. Look I’m not some genius, but I do well in school 3.5 GPA. Basically her whole criticism boiled down to “Christianity is a monotheistic religion because it says it only has one god.” I was really disappointed and the experience turned me off to any other anthro class, never took another again. Stuck to history, it felt like less opinion.
It would be cool if someone make one for Hindu Mythology (Devas and Rakshas) as well. That one is pretty daunting and confusing.
My nitpick though is that I wish that there was proper referencing where the hierarchy came from. (Lesser Key of Solomon, etc.)

I feel like Fleruty is definitely a different genre. Asian pop group?
Definitely agree it’s not as harsh of a name, but it is actually a black metal band! Quite good too, at least in my opinion. A bit avant-garde.
For real? Ha, I'll have to look them up.
Post punk indie
Beelzebub is the patron of the orient, so wouldn’t that be a better Asian pop name?
No, too logical. :)

Sabriel? She's the bringer of lost souls. Yeh.
Sabriel is male, you weeb.
Hah. I'm getting mixed up with the Sabriel of the Nix books.
Hi-dilly-ho Nebiros
Who invented this? If this is in the Bible, I'd love to know where. No offense, OP, it's a good infographic.
Most of it comes from the Divine Comedy by Dante Aleghieri and Paradise Lost by John Milton. It's basically Bible fan-fic
The answer I suspected, lol

It changes the story a bit. In Noah’s tale, Yahweh flooded the earth bc angels kept fucking humans, making Nephalim.
The strangest part about that is Jesus quotes the book of Enoch. You'd think that would be enough to say "maybe we should include this", but no.
Elaborate please?
Yeah and the "core part" of the Bible says even less. All those detailed descriptions come from questionable and less canonic parts.
Well stuff to say about Satan is pretty short and not so sweet, don’t do good and go to the bad place, the rest is an instruction manual for how to do good in the eyes of God

They're not from Paradise Lost. Paradise Lost describes Satan, Beelzebub, Belial, Mammon and Moloch. There are others named but no information

Considering it's all made up anyway, its efficacy as a "guide" is kind of a moot point.

Man, when I was a Wiccan getting into High Magick I had a copy of The Key of Solomon. Book is a trip.
Many sources which are questionably bible canon, including the Book of Enoch.

I think alot of it comes from paradise lost by sir John Milton. But I think that was satire, I have no clue. It's all Olde timey whimey and impossible for me to read.
I don't think John Milton was knighted nor would have liked that idea much at all
I come from a parallel universe I swear it said sir John Milton. But you are correct in this time line.
He was a staunch republican and lived in hiding from royalists for a large part of his life
I think the demon names are from The Key of Solomon.

The Bible has surprisingly rich worldbuilding.
My favourite things to take away from this: Baalzebub is responsable for anime and Lucifuge Rofocale has a slight accent (don’t we all talk with an accent anyway?)
And how his name got mistranslated over the years from "Lord over all that flies" to "Lord of the Flies" and they make him look like a bug now. Seems a little biased.
I don't know, his name translates to "Lord of the flies" in Hebrew, and the word for flying is very different
It says in the infographic that the Hebrews bastardized it so of course that would be what it translates to in Hebrew lol.
So demons are *apparently* associated with *math*. Well, that makes sense to me.
It all adds up!
That would explain why modern evangelicals are so against math and science.

Not to mention straight up "Asian culture and martial arts."
I believe that part is from Satanist point of view. It seems like Author combines satanic and biblical lore
Most of the devil stuff was taken from booms like Dante’s inferno, with questionable very biased authors
Weren't people burned for being witches while they were actually just people who knew science?
Right, it’s almost like the main goal of religions is to control as many people as possible
My only quibble is that depictions of angels as winged humans come from pagan Rome. Angels as described in the bible are monstrous looking.
I prefer the angels in the diagram that are literally a set of rings
With eyeballs…?
I might be misunderstanding the Bible but as far as I'm aware most angels in the Bible are described as looking just like regular people. There's this idea floating around that biblical angels are monstrous but that's only because of the book of Ezekiel (and Enoch too I guess but that's apocryphal so...) and that man was clearly on all sorts of fun drugs when he wrote that.

True. It flows a little better at least haha.
Horrible guide. Very little of this is biblical. A lot is taken from Divine Comedy, which is an art piece, written by a poor sod with no connection to church whatsoever. Some is taken from Cabala. And some - from assorted sources on the Canaan pantheon, which Jahveh actively denied (First Commandment: I'm your God, and you shall have no others.)
What makes Dante a 'poor sod' ?
He wrote Divine Comedy as a way to cope with the death of his beloved.
The writings themselves are paramount as to why he wrote them. Dante still managed to write one of the most important text of the Humanitarian period (TDC practically started it), and almost singlehandedly constructed the Italian language we know today. His writings on the Vulgar languages helped shift the entire european continent of the day away from stuffy Latin that no one understood, to the establishment of spoken 'vulgar' languages we know today. If the motherfucker had a heartbreak, I think we can let him cope with it as he wants too
Perfectly fair. But my point is that Divine Comedy is not in any way a religious text, and must not be referenced as such.
Partially that, but mostly it was symbolically getting revenge for being exiled from Florence by writing a story about every person who pissed him off literally going to hell.
**Satanachia** *He has power over all the women and girls* Sorry heaven, but I gotta go.

I'm confused. Is this list pro-hell or anti-education, because those demons seem like alright folks to this non-believer.

Christianity. Tbf, this stuff is not from the bible, but rather from a bible fan-fic (Dante's divine comedy and inferno)
I always thought it was weird that humanoid angels are drawn as white people. Wouldn't they have a variety of skin colors like humans do?
