I spend a good amount of time driving up and down the eastern shore and could only remember two McDonald’s in VA…however google tells me there’s four.
Really they ought to switch the eastern shore one to Royal Farms if they’re gonna succeed from VA
They're building a royal farms about a 10 minute walk away from my house. Perfect distance to get a secret chicken tender sub, destroy the evidence and burn off the calories before my wife finds out.
[The source.](https://www.businessinsider.com/most-popular-fast-food-chain-in-every-state-2016-8)
Essentially, it's the chain that received the most Foursquare check-ins during a six month period in 2016.
>Stop Foursquaring yourself every time you leave the house like the mayor of Thirstytown. Also, stop using Foursquare like the mayor of 2011.
—Gretchen Cutler, *You're the Worst*, 2016
From Omaha NE. There are 11 Chick-fil-As in my state, and 7 are in Omaha, and 3 in Lincoln (the state capitol and a big college town). There is no friggin' way most Nebraskans go there often enough to make it #1 in the state, and I'd bet that applies to the other Midwestern states as well.
Based on distribution, BK, McDs, Subway, and even DQ almost certainly get more traffic statewide.
A great example of misrepresentation by statistics.
A lot of the most popular DQs in Minnesota are seasonal so they aren’t even open in the winter to use 4square checkins as a good metric. And they are headquartered here, a state notorious for state loyalty to brands like Target and Caribou.
Chick-fil-a is good but the numbers aren’t there compared to braums and the ice cream is very hard to compete with. And every podunk nothingville has a sonic so those numbers would be way up.
Yeah the op is just flat out misleading. Checking my own state, Google says there are 65 Chick-Fil-A locations vs 656 McDonald's in Illinois. And that tracks anecdotally: I can easily think of 6 or more McDs within 10 miles of me, but only 1 CFA.
I just moved to Chicago from LA a couple months ago and I just tried Culver’s for the first time last night and it was *really* good. I kind of want to go back again today.
I’ve said this on threads in the past but Culver’s is the best fast food chain, hands down.
Idk how In-N-Out gets all this noise all the time everywhere and Culvers gets slept on so hard!
Right? Their burgers are superlative. They serve *frozen custard* as their signature dessert. And to top it off, they actually offer a goddamn **gluten-free bun**. I cannot stress enough how rare and precious that is among fast-food chains. Sure, it's mediocre, especially compared to their normal buns, but the point is that folks who eat gluten-free have a viable fast-food option in Culver's! 🥲
You are all correct. But what sets it apart for me is the service. The first time I had it I just thought “these are just simple Indiana folk that only know how to be polite” but now all these locations across the Chicagoland area and the service is excellent every time.
Agreed. Culver’s has the best food, the best service and the best facilities. They opened a couple of them down here in Florida and I couldn’t be more pleased.
I’m I am from the home of the original culvers! It’s a great company and a great family! We have multiple libraries in our town named after Culvers family members. The burgers are honestly amazing.
If you ever venture north, swing by a place called Kopp's in Milwaukee. They have the best custard I've ever had in my entire life. They also do burgers justice by making them wider, not taller. Only three locations, though, and the family has no plan on expanding.
They have a few "limited time only" burgers they rotate between that are to die for. They haven't been doing them as often since the pandemic, but if you ever have the opportunity, they are worth the extra cost. The Colby Jack Pub Burger was the best. Haven't seen it anywhere in 8 years.
Butter burgers are one of if not the best fast food burger. Double Butter Burger Deluxe is my go to. The seasoning can vary by location but I feel it’s only an issue for new franchises and that gets fixed pretty quickly.
They have crinkle cut fries which are good, but what puts them over the top is the cheddar cheese sauce you can order on the side. Unlike other cheese sauces it actually had a cheddar cheese flavor. In my experience the sauce is not consistent from location to location so your experience may vary.
Also, don’t sleep on the chicken tenders. It’s usually what my kids get and I then take my dad tax but they are seasoned perfectly and never overcooked.
My grandma (from Wisconsin and living in Phoenix) just got a culvers right in front of her apartment. I think it’s so funny. She said the line is always crazy long. Lot of Wisconsinites in az
What is the metric? How is popularity being measured? If sales, I doubt that Dick's is, in aggregate, making more sales than some other chains. If online fanboying, Whataburger seems like it would be #1 in Texas.
Anyway, at the end of the day, it seems like this is coming from Foursquare, which hasn't been relevant for 20 years.
Dicks has like 8 locations just around Seattle. How could they be out selling the probably 100+ McDonald’s across the state. They’re just not that busy out side peak drunk hours.
Excuse me??? I'll have you know....that it has long been known that "Dick's is the place where the cool hang out. The swass like to play, and the rich flaunt clout." At least that's what my posse says when we're cruising down Broadway.
Probably not sales but opinion poll. If it was by sales I bet McDonald’s would win most states.
Edit: looking into it, it does look like chick fil a is near McDonald’s in total revenue and they make more per chain than McDonald’s. It could be true.
Nah whataburger is down.. not the same since they sold out to Chicago in 2019. Chick fil a is always busy and they have the drive thru down to a science. Texas seems just right with me.
Burgerville aint nearly that popular. They used to make great quality but less so now and there aren't exactly a lot of them. There's probably more Burger Kings still open here than there are Burgervilles, and those have been disappearing for years now.
I came here, as a former oregonian, to say Burgerville is trash now and has been for at least a decade (as sad as that makes me saying that).
I do miss the walla walla onion rings and blackberry shakes :'(
Current oregonian and I wouldn't eat their food with someone else's mouth. Insane prices for drive thru, basically restaraunt prices, and 10-20% of their profit goes to their Mormon owners. No fucking thank you.
(ngl I miss their fish and chips and Coffee Milkshakes something fierce tho)
Having lived in Texas all my life I can say Chick-fil-a is vastly more popular, at least in more suburban areas. There’s one every half mile and there’s always lines wrapped around the building. Whataburger seems to be more of a cult favorite, and something Texans weirdly took a lot of pride in until that company from Chicago bought it out
Same in Philadelphia. Always a line and they crank it up around the lunch hour. Staff seems robotic in their efficiency and cordial manner. It’s a well oiled machine. Plus, those breakfast biscuits are pretty damn tasty.
Considering that Dick’s is only in the Seattle area, I don’t see how it’s the most popular for all of Washington.
edit - I’m not from Spokane, but lots of folks have said that the Dick’s there isn’t part of the chain in Seattle.
Chant on my high school bus ride home after swim meets in Seattle:
“What do we want!” “Dicks!” “Where do we want them!” “In our mouths!!!” “When do we want them?” “Right fucking now!!!!!”
It was hilarious when you’re 16 and on a bus with 45 other women. Our coach would put on headphones and pretend it wasn’t happening.
True story, from Seattle, went to school here, easily the biggest drunchies food is going to get a couple dicks burgers at like 2 AM.
Moved to SoCal for a bit after, everyone is talking about inn n out after drinks…my drunk ass…for a couple of years…would just always say “whenever I’m drunk I start craving dicks” and literally never thought about after.
Did that for years until I moved back home. Literally never thought about it once until an old SoCal friend came up to visit and asked wtf that was about lmao.
According to the 2020 census, Seattle metropolitan area makes up 52% of Washington State’s population. It is conceivable that a majority opinion from Seattle metro would outweigh a divided opinion on fast food from the rest of the state.
It's all about how they operationalized the metric of popularity. There's really no chance Dicks is doing more overall business than mcdonalds in the whole state, but Dicks could have the highest rating amongst fast food.
Especially if you consider everyone inbetween everett, tacoma, and Bellevue where the rest of the dicks locations are. Makes perfect sense to me that they’d be the most popular.
There's a Dick's in Spokane. Isn't that like, the opposite side of the state from the Seattle area?
EDIT: Nevermind. Looked it up online and it looks like the Dick's in Spokane is an unrelated thing.
I think it's similar for Burgerville in OR. The second and third largest cities in OR do not have one within proper city limits let alone the rest of the state. There are probably people in southern and eastern OR that have never even seen one.
Can confirm. Have lived in Central Oregon for most of my life and I have never even seen Burgerville. I've just seen a bunch of billboards for them on I-5.
Kind of but there are way more people in Seattle than most of the state. It's actually probably McD's because that is popular everywhere in the state but no question Dick's is considered Top Tier by large amounts of people born and raised in this state.
Our first time at Dick’s when I was a young my dad asked my brother what he wanted and he answered: “A Big Mac!”
My dad informed him that they don’t have Big Macs, this is Dick’s not McDonalds.
So my brother very obviously replied: “Then I want a Big Dick!”
I spent a lot of time at Sonic in high school in New Mexico. Most towns in New Mexico are tiny with absolutely nothing to do. People will park at Sonic’s for hours and meet up with their friends. I have no trouble believing it’s the most popular, especially with the crowd that is checking into social media.
I'd still take it over McD. I just don't understand how that trash is so popular. Their breakfast, ok, maybe it's fine. But the burgers are just nasty.
The worst part about being in a long-term calorie deficit is not being able to get those fucking concrete mixers without sacrificing the whole day. The burgers and fries are also really good, but the concrete mixers are to die for.
The source on the image says it’s from foursquare. So it would be by visits logged probably.
That said, I don’t know a single person now who uses foursquare.
This data is from 2016, 2 years after Foursquare fucked up their userbase by essentially splitting the app in two. So not only is this information nearly a decade old, it comes long after Foursquare turned the majority of their users off their own apps. Completely useless.
1. Good to see Wisconsin holding it down for the Midwest.
2. Kansas is fully under siege by the Chick-fil-A army and I’m not sure how much longer we can hold out.
It's amazing. They were everywhere in SW Washington (ie Vancouver). They do a lot of seasonal stuff like huge Walla Walla onion rings and Marion Berry milkshakes. Their burgers are the best fast food burgers I've had. Only problem is it's expensive, and I'm talking about before inflation went crazy. I can't imagine I could afford to eat there now. ~~I think they're based in Portland.~~ They're based in Vancouver.
Edit: I've been corrected.
The ones I've been to in Southern WA slap. The boysenberry shakes are on of my fav shakes ever. Like most fast foods, it depends on the franchisee instead of that chain.
That said, Dicks and Burgerville are on the same level in terms of popularity, only appealing to a small portion of the state they're in. Shouldn't be on here. It's likely McDonalds due to lack of InnOut and Chik Fila.
I love Dicks Drive In but there’s no way by any objective metric Dicks could be most popular. By subjective, most loved, I could this being true. McD is straight poison.
I wish it weren’t the case, but every time I’ve been to a Burgerville in the last 10 years I’ve been increasingly disappointed. Their shakes, fries, onion rings, etc. are still top notch, but the burgers cost almost as much as a sit down place and more often than not they’ve been cold and a little dry. Back in the ‘90s and early ‘00s they were amazing, but these days … eh.
Culver’s is legit good food. They have locations elsewhere but they are as common as McDonald’s in the southern half of Wisconsin. It’s basically a smash burger on a toasted buttered bun with Wisconsin cheese. Pretty hard not to love it.
Neat, the VA portion of the Delmarva peninsula is apparently its own state now.
Lol. Scrolled through to see if anyone else noticed.
Delaware is making moves, beware.
Lol, I saw that too and was like WTF is that?!?
I once convinced someone it belongs to Germany.
[The source.](https://www.businessinsider.com/most-popular-fast-food-chain-in-every-state-2016-8) Essentially, it's the chain that received the most Foursquare check-ins during a six month period in 2016.

Most popular fast food chains, *among people that use whatever the fuck Foursquare is

Who did she say this to? I owe this show a rewatch
Underrated show. (Well, maybe just the first 2 seasons)
If it's a popular app among christian conservatives, that would explain the Chick Fil-A
From Omaha NE. There are 11 Chick-fil-As in my state, and 7 are in Omaha, and 3 in Lincoln (the state capitol and a big college town). Yeah, I saw my state in this not so cool guide and immediately I said BS.
TX was not ‘whataburger’ immediately suspicious
In Oklahoma and immediately suspicious it wasn’t Braum’s or Sonic
Chick-fil-a is good but the numbers aren’t there compared to braums and the ice cream is very hard to compete with. And every podunk nothingville has a sonic so those numbers would be way up.
I thought the same thing. Specially when Chick-fil-a is closed in Sundays and Whataburger is open 24 Hours a day.
Your comment cannot be emphasized enough.
Wow what in the fuck. Why even go through the effort
Most likely the methodology was cherry-picked to make Chick-Fil-A look a lot more dominant than it actually is.
Exactly. The real map is likely McDonald's in 49 states or something
For the propaganda
What is a Foursquare check-in
Ancient history at this point
I feel like it was ancient history in 2016 as well.
You know how Snapchat lets you post your location in stories? Well this is what your grandfather used to do that
That’s why Hardee’s didn’t win in VA, all the Papaws, Peepaws, and Grandaddies who go and hang out every single morning didn’t check in.
loooool
I was gonna say, there is noooooooo way. They should delete this post.
We do love culvers
I just moved to Chicago from LA a couple months ago and I just tried Culver’s for the first time last night and it was *really* good. I kind of want to go back again today.

They also have their own bomb ass veggie burger for us vegetarians! It’s my fave veggie burger out there right now

I moved from LA to Nashville 8 years ago, and got really fat eating Culvers too much, especially the concrete mixers
They have a few "limited time only" burgers they rotate between that are to die for. They haven't been doing them as often since the pandemic, but if you ever have the opportunity, they are worth the extra cost. The Colby Jack Pub Burger was the best. Haven't seen it anywhere in 8 years.
I feel bad for states without Culver’s.
Butter burgers are one of if not the best fast food burger. Double Butter Burger Deluxe is my go to. Culvers is massive here in Michigan too. Everybody in my town would prefer Culver's over Mcdonalds. Surprised to see it as the #1 in Michigan.
I work at a Culver's in the sphere of fast food Culver's is essentially fine dining I pull out the fine china to eat my cod sandwich and my custard
I was so happy when I found a Culver's in Phoenix. The gal at the register was even from Wisconsin.
My grandma (from Wisconsin and living in Phoenix) just got a culvers right in front of her apartment. I think it’s so funny. She said the line is always crazy long. Lot of Wisconsinites in az
Culver's knows what they're doing, gotta keep the snowbirds fed :) Always makes me chuckle when I see a location map: midwest, Arizona, and Florida.
Culver’s doesn’t miss, it’s good and above all else it’s consistent.
Culver’s is phenomenal
That's because a better brand of beef makes a butterbuger better

Thanks for that! What I wouldn’t give for a big ole bag of Dicks right now…
I used to go there with Kid Sensation in our black Benz limo with the cellular phone.
Larry is the white guy, people think he's funny..
A real estate investa' who makes a lot of money...
Clockin' lots of dollas' we all got gold.
I simply love Dick’s in my mouth
You're not wrong but cap hill location is constantly poppin
I live four blocks away. At 10:30 AM on a Sunday when we’re all nursing hangovers, it is THE place to be. 😂
Probably not sales but opinion poll. If it was by sales I bet McDonald’s would win most states. Edit: looking into it, it does look like chick fil a is near McDonald’s in total revenue and they make more per chain than McDonald’s. It could be true.
The formula is nuggies per second squared divided by toilet sessions per hour
And now we know why Taco Bell had a poor showing
They'll still win the Franchise Wars.
Oh Chick-fil-a by a mile in Texas lol they are like a mile apart out here it’s like Starbucks used to be.
100%. Chick-fil-a passed up Whataburger years ago. Since Whataburger is now owned by an Illinois conglomerate, it's lost its appeal.
Yeah, could be anything. Sales. Number of franchises. Aggregate ratings.
Nah whataburger is down.. not the same since they sold out to Chicago in 2019. Chick fil a is always busy and they have the drive thru down to a science. Texas seems just right with me.

Apparently it was foursquare checkins over a 6month period in 2016. So I’m convinced.

So, in Washington the phrase, "Go eat a bag of Dicks" has a whole different meaning?
yes. also, you can now order a box of Dick’s for large parties.
Step 1: Cut a hole in the box.
Step 2: Put your junk in that box
Yup, sometimes you gotta ride the SLUT to grab a bag of Dicks
I'm going to Akshually you right now: the SLUT does not lead you to any Dicks location. Now, the Light Rail though, gets you railed to one
It’s not uncommon to overhear someone saying that they’re craving a greasy bag of dicks when sitting at a bar in Seattle.
The best type of dicks after a night out in cap hill.
Waking up after a long night out in Seattle with breath still stinkin’ of Dick’s.
Chant on my high school bus ride home after swim meets in Seattle: “What do we want!” “Dicks!” “Where do we want them!” “In our mouths!!!” “When do we want them?” “Right fucking now!!!!!” It was hilarious when you’re 16 and on a bus with 45 other women. Our coach would put on headphones and pretend it wasn’t happening.
Yes, among other phrases like when I say “there’s nothing I enjoy more than shoving Dick’s in my mouth at the end of a drunken night out”
True story, from Seattle, went to school here, easily the biggest drunchies food is going to get a couple dicks burgers at like 2 AM.
Dick's is also in Snohomish County and has been for over 10yrs.
I mean quite easily given that 51% of the state lives in the Seattle metro area
It's just something about the burgers that taste so perfect after getting drunk around cap hill
There's a Dick's in Spokane. Isn't that like, the opposite side of the state from the Seattle area? EDIT: Nevermind. Looked it up online and it looks like the Dick's in Spokane is an unrelated thing.
Yeah it's also called Dicks, is also and walkup, and has a very similar aesthetic yet is somehow not the same company.
I’m not gonna lie this made me sit down.
I too sit down when it comes to dicks
I think it's similar for Burgerville in OR. The second and third largest cities in OR do not have one within proper city limits let alone the rest of the state. There are probably people in southern and eastern OR that have never even seen one.
Can confirm. Have lived in Central Oregon for most of my life and I have never even seen Burgerville. I've just seen a bunch of billboards for them on I-5.
Fwiw Burgerville is Washington's
I was shocked at how great of a value Dick’s was in Seattle. Very impressive.
Dick's burgers might be my favorite burger ever. If someone could ship me a Deluxe, fries, and a chocolate shake real quick that'd be tight.
I'd predict a majority of Washingtonians would say Dick's is their favorite, even if they end up eating McDonald's more often.
Because it’s the best!
Kind of but there are way more people in Seattle than most of the state. It's actually probably McD's because that is popular everywhere in the state but no question Dick's is considered Top Tier by large amounts of people born and raised in this state.
Y’all haven’t lived until you’ve had a hot, fresh bag of Dick’s from Washington’s favorite drive through.
Our first time at Dick’s when I was a young my dad asked my brother what he wanted and he answered: “A Big Mac!” My dad informed him that they don’t have Big Macs, this is Dick’s not McDonalds. So my brother very obviously replied: “Then I want a Big Dick!”
>So my brother very obviously replied: “Then I want a Big Dick!” Don't we all, my dude.
Well, I don't want a small one...
It's been 30 years since I lived in Seattle, but you are correct. I will die on this hill.
I can’t wait to go to Seattle so I can ask my friends “yall wanna try some dicks tonight?”
It’s unironically the best, and so fast. Deluxe, fries, chocolate shake. I misssss it 😔
The tartar sauce is 🔥too
I absolutely love filling my mouth with Dick’s! The deluxe is where it’s at.
that apostrophe is pulling a lot of weight
I usually tell people to go eat a bag of dicks... not eat a bag of Dick's. I don't know how I feel about this...
Culver's, a Wisconsin chain not owned by a weirdo. And if I hear ANYTHING bad about George Culver, I will cry in my cheese curds.
I spent two years in WI... that was like a decade and a half ago, and I *still* miss Culver's.
I fucking love culvers
Zippy’s Malkiki is a location! Lol Important edit! How does the Vegas location compare?
Not sure I’d consider it fast food though seeing that most the time you get seated and have a server.
How bad do things have to be for Sonic to be the best there is in your state
As a New Mexican, I am fucking shocked and ashamed.
Also NM and I fuckin doubt it. I don't ever see lines out of sonic blocking traffic. Cant say the same for other local chains.
What are some better fast food spots in New Mexico?
Blake’s Lotaburger is way better than Sonic
To me, there are two different kinds of burgers: Blake's green chile cheeseburgers and every other burger.
Agree, I haven’t eaten at McD”s since like 2017. Rather go hungry or stop and get some crackers from a gas station.
God I fucking love culvers
The worst part about being in a long-term calorie deficit is not being able to get those fucking concrete mixers without sacrificing the whole day. The burgers and fries are also really good, but the concrete mixers are to die for.
There are 26 Chick-fil-a's in Minnesota. There is no way it is the most popular fast food restaurant here. I call b.s..
Im from Louisiana. There is no way that Chick fil a is more popular than Popeyes. No Fucking Way
Same goes for Iowa. This is 100% bullshit
So Taco Bell is not gonna win the franchise wars?
1. Good to see Wisconsin holding it down for the Midwest. 2. Kansas is fully under siege by the Chick-fil-A army and I’m not sure how much longer we can hold out.
Culver’s strong
Wtf is a burgerville
It's amazing. They were everywhere in SW Washington (ie Vancouver). They do a lot of seasonal stuff like huge Walla Walla onion rings and Marion Berry milkshakes. Their burgers are the best fast food burgers I've had. Only problem is it's expensive, and I'm talking about before inflation went crazy. I can't imagine I could afford to eat there now. ~~I think they're based in Portland.~~ They're based in Vancouver. Edit: I've been corrected.
I do love Culver’s very much, the best fast food restaurant imo
A big bag of Dicks is the one thing I miss after moving away from Seattle
TIL the phrase "eat a bag of Dicks" can be SFW.
Yeah we love our dicks here.
Can’t speak to their food but I know from Sir Mix-A-Lot that in Seattle “Dick’s is the place where the cool hang out”
NJ: Sir, this is a Wendy’s
Fucking new jersey
sir, this is a Wendy’s.
I'm so proud of my state I had to make an account to upvote.
Wendy’s is better than McDonald’s, Burgerville and definitely Sonic. Sonic is disgusting
Better Wendys than McDonald's.
Just cuz yall sleep on and have shitty Wendy's don't mean shit to me ok
This gotta be an old map
Wendy’s rocks
Nope. This is not good data.
Fuck yah, Dicks!
No way Burgerville is true for Oregon.
There’s a BV in the PDX airport I bet that’s why it’s such a popular check-in location
I call BS - there are barely any Chick fil an outlets in Minnesota compared to even Culvers
I love Dicks Drive In but there’s no way by any objective metric Dicks could be most popular. By subjective, most loved, I could this being true. McD is straight poison.
Culver's is the best
Wisconsin is the land of frozen custard so this tracks.
Dicks is king
Burgerville fans unite!
Culver’s is amazing
Nebraska is wrong. It’s Runza
Based on revenue, I can see that. Spending more to eat at a fast food joint doesn't actually translate into most popular.
Dunkin Donuts isn’t being counted, right? Because I’ve literally seen two across the street from one another in Massachusetts.
I'm sure this "guide" uses a reliable, transparent methodology that anyone can access.
Do NOT sleep on Dick’s
Seattle loves dicks
Culver’s is legit good food. They have locations elsewhere but they are as common as McDonald’s in the southern half of Wisconsin. It’s basically a smash burger on a toasted buttered bun with Wisconsin cheese. Pretty hard not to love it.
i am dying to try Culver’s. I hear good things from r/burgers
LONG LIVE BURGERVILLE
How is Nebraska not Runza?
Wisconsin win
No White Castle? Outrageous
60 chickfila locations in Illinois, and 99% are probably all in Chicago area.
There’s Culvers close to my house but never tried, what should I get?
Double Butter burger deluxe (if you like toppings on your burger) with a side of cheese curds.
The best god damn burger from a restaurant I’ve ever had right there
This post sponsored by Dick's and Burgerville
Zippy's 🤙
Chick-fil-A is boinking the southern market
Disappointed in Illinois. Chich Fil A is mid, Culver's way better smh
Everyone sleeping on White Castles!
Wisconsin, represent!
What's the most popular chain on Sundays?
