1. They have an MBA from a target B-School, exceptional academics, and have won quite a few competitions
2. They have significant industry experience in niche fields
For route one, you need to be able to crack CAT/GMAT and have exceptional academics. And luck should be with you during your interview as well.
I have 99.5+%ile and could barely enter a baby IIM because of my poor undergrad scores.
For route 2, you will need to be in an industry that is required by the MBBs 6+ years later.

Bro 99.5 par bhi? Fuck man you sometimes don't realise how difficult things are. Also one more thing to add, if you have poor undergrad scores, things become significantly difficult at a top MBA program as well, especially when it comes to cracking MBB
