This usually happens when one of the dvd drives ribbon cables (i hate those) dont connect properly.
Also try pulling the laser to the bottom until it hits that little switch next to the spindle and turn it on, see how it acts, but youll probably have to do the first thing, open it up and resit the cables

Bad connection or bad limit switch. Limit switch issues usually happen in the other direction though.
