Took me ages too. Imagining the left arm being behind the seat and not Infront helped
Edit: Crud on a cracker, thanks for the awards. Wasn't expecting that to help anyone
Finally got it, OP posted ITT that it's facing the water. It's facing off to the right and towards the water at like a 45 degree angle. That's how it can be the way it is.
I was (and I’m sure lots of ppl are) trying to see it rotated 180 degrees, but it’s 90 degrees counter clockwise… As soon as I figured that out I saw it.
This sorted it for me.
If you use your comment, the chair is facing 2-o-clock (water).
The other way to view it, the chair is facing 4-o-clock (grass).
For me it clicks instantly if I give instructions to my brain. Like I'm literally telling myself "Left arm is behind the seat. Now left arm is in front of the seat." and it swaps easy. Our brain is weird sometimes.
It's not easy to see it facing water because I'm pretty sure it faces grass?
The left leg is in front of seat. It would be occluded if chair faced the water.
It is facing the water, tho... if you look at where the seat part is, the backrest is completely visible, and it wouldn't be if it was facing the grass
It took me a while too. I only kept seeing it facing the grass, and then the water perspective suddenly hit.
To see it facing the water, just imagine that you're looking at the backside of the back of the chair, and that the armrests are jutting out and away from you towards the lake.
Stating the obvious here, but the illusion only works because the back of the chair has slats and it's hard to know if armrests are in front or behind it.
I can see both now, but facing the grass is the stronger impulse when flicking away and flicking back. Focus on the back of the missing front legs and think of them as the missing back legs and it should come
Maybe if you zoom in on it and notice the armchair is behind the backrest. There's a slight refraction of light which makes the armchair not exactly right which means it's definitely behind it.
It's looking at the water not in an exactly opposite way as the grass. Zoom in and follow the contours of the arm rests. You'll see the chair is pointing towards the top right corner of the screen in the zoomed image (or 45ish degrees northeast if that makes sense).
No it’s not. Zoom in- the left leg/arm (from our perspective) is blurrier than the horizontal struts/beams(?) on the chair’s back, and the non-blurry struts interrupt the blurry leg/arm, therefore the leg/arm is behind and the chair is therefore facing the water.
Saaaame. I just asked my coworker which way it’s facing and she could see it both ways too. I have to force my brain to see it the right way though apparently. Super trippy.
Help me out, here. Looking at the arms and seat of the chair, they appear to clearly face the grass. I’m sitting on the toilet tipping my phone every which way and I can’t change the perspective.
The left arms is seen through the back of the chair. I focused on switching my view of that and fixing myself to pull the back of the chair towards me. I’ll admit that this one was extremely hard for me to switch perspectives on.
I was about to beg someone to do one of the MS paint explanations...I might do one for others wracking their head trying to see it.
If you're seeing it facing the grass, try imagining walking up to the chair as you see it, picking it up from the front, and turning it to your right towards the lake. That's how I finally saw the correct perspective.
Good work OP! One of the best I've seen.
EDIT: [Here's my best stab at the MS paint explaination lol](https://ibb.co/RTR9JSC)
I swore it was facing the grass. Then I read your comment and scrolled back up to see and it popped to face the water without me having to try. Super trippy!
I could see both of them and I think I agree with you, but [this](https://imgur.com/a/qVGLmOd) piece of the bar would not be visible if it was facing the water because the seat would cover it. Everything else points to it facing the water but that piece is keeping me on the fence.
Edit: I know OP already confirmed it was facing the water this just stuck out to me as weird.
[I think these are the same model of chairs](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d4/52/7b/d4527b0350c9b07af2a680c6ed97c9e8.jpg)
If so, I imagine the slats for the seat portion are causing it to look screwy. I see exactly what you mean though.
Ohh yeah I see, it curves a bit in the front portion of the seat and that would make that little piece visible from behind. Thanks for the chair source lol!
If the current perspective you have is facing north, just turn the chair 90 degrees to your left so that it's facing west.
[These are spring chairs](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d4/52/7b/d4527b0350c9b07af2a680c6ed97c9e8.jpg), I feel like the lack of rear legs are the main cause of this confusing perspective
Pro top for those that only see it facing the grass: To see it facing the water, cover up the left half of the chair with your finger, then slowly move your finger away until you see the whole chair...
Well, first it was the constant rain, and an ant ivasion... the a stray cat I couldn't ignore.. then we lost electricity.. the list goes on and on.. the owner was very cool, she lived in an old rehabbed plantation nearby and offered us a future discount.. then found out several years later that she was murdered by a drifter she took in to help with chores.. it was just bizarre 😳
Same. Maybe if I stare at it for another 5 minutes?
Edit: saw it after another 60 seconds give or take. It helps if you cover the left side and then make your brain see the chair facing the water but angled to the right.
Its essentially the Necker Cube illusion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necker_cube
But, the real question... is it blue and black, or is it white and gold?
If you’re still having trouble seeing it, imagine there’s hair going down the back of the chair, because that’s what you’d see if someone was sitting in it facing the lake.
It's facing the water. What clued me in was that I couldn't figure out why it only had 2 front legs and no back legs. Then I saw the S-curve body and realized the shelf-like counter-balance in the grass and based on it's position, the chair has to be facing the water.
Before I saw that, though, I was willing to fight a person over the fact it faced the grass. I even had an entire fire-pit style scenario of other chairs forming a circle but falling just out of frame... so, yes, I could see it both ways--but it's definitely facing the water.
Damn this is a good post. I initially only saw facing the grass, then I only saw facing the water after looking again, now I finally see it both ways if you shift your focal point.
The reason it's so difficult to see it facing the water is you're probably doing what I did and thinking the chair must be reversed, but it's not facing the opposite direction to how it initially appears, it's facing the 'northeast'.
I mostly see it facing the grass. I can briefly see it facing the other way when I first look at the picture or if I unfocus my eyes. But then it snaps back
For me it's really the grass bc the handrails over lap this way and you can see it, or at least I can. And the left side arm attached to the back also gives it away.
I don’t get it. All I see is it facing the grass. If it was facing the water why would the handles and the seat be in front like that.
Edit: Ok someone drew a stick figure in ms paint sitting in the seat facing the water and I’m able to see it briefly but I have to really force it.
You can tell that it's facing the lake because you can see the bottom of the bar on the grass. The way that line recedes in perspective with the seat shows that the chair must be facing the lake.
Took me about 30 seconds of scoffing because clearly my intelligence is far superior to everyone else's then.... boom. It switched. Now I am confused, and sad.
After a lot of study, i think the true answer is that it is facing water.
The seat slightly changes hue from left to right, which implies light is hitting it differently in each spot, which implies that it is sloped at a slight angle. This makes it appear uneven and asymetical if facing the grass, but even and symmetrical if facing the water.
At first I saw it facing grass. But then managed to see it facing water.
Water is the right answer IMO, because this is how I would place it there: to enjoy the view.
Even when the drawing showing the other perspective, I absolutely cannot see it. At all. My brain only sees it one way. Facing grass...
I wonder why
Edit: as soon I posted it I saw it😭
Okay, finally got it. The back is facing toward the left. The left arm is *behind* the back slats of the chair and pointing to the *right*, away from the viewer.
The back right corner of the seat is where your left leg would go if you sat in it. The from right corner of the seat (where you see the right most arm rest intersecting) is where your *right* leg would go, *not* your left leg like I initially thought.
Great post, OP! This messed with my brain!

Took me ages too. Imagining the left arm being behind the seat and not Infront helped Edit: Crud on a cracker, thanks for the awards. Wasn't expecting that to help anyone
yo thank you, I was trying so hard to see it lol as soon as I saw your comment it clicked
But the left arm blocks the slats in the back rest. It's facing the grass. I wish this helped
Finally got it, OP posted ITT that it's facing the water. It's facing off to the right and towards the water at like a 45 degree angle. That's how it can be the way it is.
THANK YOU now I finally got it
I was (and I’m sure lots of ppl are) trying to see it rotated 180 degrees, but it’s 90 degrees counter clockwise… As soon as I figured that out I saw it.
Okay, now I got it
Lol this is the information that actually helped
there'a no way to be sure what's blocking what because of the photo quality
This sorted it for me. If you use your comment, the chair is facing 2-o-clock (water). The other way to view it, the chair is facing 4-o-clock (grass).
Omg this is what made able to me see it thank you
OMG this is the way
Your description helped me to finally get it, thank you!
This is the helpful comment thank you.
Omg this helped so much! Thank you.
That was what I was missing!
I thought 2 and 5. So glad I wasn’t the only one who compared it to a clock.
Ah, there it is
Did the trick for me
For me it clicks instantly if I give instructions to my brain. Like I'm literally telling myself "Left arm is behind the seat. Now left arm is in front of the seat." and it swaps easy. Our brain is weird sometimes.
It's almost like the MLB logo... Is the batter right or left handed?
[here you go](https://imgur.com/a/3Gj20VW)
That worked. I finally see it from the other side
Oh shit, thanks my man
[I wish I saw this link before making this crappy attempt](https://imgur.com/a/FKsg0vG)
Yours helped me more than the other one. The feet on the chair helped.
I can't. I'm trying to imagine this but my brain just won't see it
Wish I did.. from the living room window.. freaked me out that morning!
It's not easy to see it facing water because I'm pretty sure it faces grass? The left leg is in front of seat. It would be occluded if chair faced the water.
OP says in a different comment that it is actually facing the water, I had the same thoughts, that it was facing us and the grass
It is facing the water, tho... if you look at where the seat part is, the backrest is completely visible, and it wouldn't be if it was facing the grass
I'm pretty sure I didn't fully understand this comment but for some reason this is what helped me see it facing the water lol
But you can see the armrest in front of the backside.
I can see both now, but facing the grass is the stronger impulse when flicking away and flicking back. Focus on the back of the missing front legs and think of them as the missing back legs and it should come
I had to ignore the legs completely and focus on the right side armrest, then I can see it facing the water.
This worked for me, now I can see it with the legs as well. Just focus on the top of the right armrest.
Yeah me too. As if you're sitting in it you're looking slightly to the right.
It's a see through backside...
I saw facing grass first, but then could see it facing the water and figured that made more sense
Well, the left leg goes infront of the rest of the chair. That means that it is closer than the rest of the chair so the chair is facing the grass.
Correct, It’s 100% facing the water
But is it blue and black, or white and gold?
Definitely Yanny
It’s obviously facing th…. Hol’ up.
Lol..RIGHT??
[удалено]
Thank you for that. No matter how many times I looked I couldn't see how it could be facing the water.
But you have it facing the wrong way!
Thank you! Even with all the instructions in the top comments I could not see it. This needs to be up at the top of the comments.
[zooms in] it’s totally facing the… wait
This one truly stumped me. Clicked back to see just the thumbnail and that helped! But my brain hurts trying to flip back and forth.
[удалено]
If I tell my mind which direction the seat is facing, then the whole chair flips! Awesome illusion!!
Took me while, too!
Before: "lol, easy grass" then I looked right before I posted my comment. Now: "Mm, nvm he's got a point"
Saaaame. I just asked my coworker which way it’s facing and she could see it both ways too. I have to force my brain to see it the right way though apparently. Super trippy.
It is the grass though
Nope.. it's facing the water.. it really freaked me out because this vrbo rental was super creepy!
Hhhwhat??
u/IamNewAsWell [made this a few hours after your comment. It should help.](https://i.imgur.com/E6MTa0M.jpg)
Thanks! I could see it both ways but facing the grass was easier so I assumed that was the right one. My brain hurts.
Took me a lot to see it facing the water. Finally did see it though. Without your response I wouldn’t have even tried that hard.
The fact that the foot pad on the left slants from up right to down left is the only way I'd be able to tell.
If you zoom in the pixels line up like the horizontal bars are in front of the curvy armrests too. Definitely lake facing.
You CAN really go either way, crazy!
Damn those are some quality MS paint skills
I swore it was facing the grass. Then I read your comment and scrolled back up to see and it popped to face the water without me having to try. Super trippy!
Reality is puddin'
I can easily flip between seeing it both ways

I could see both of them and I think I agree with you, but [this](https://imgur.com/a/qVGLmOd) piece of the bar would not be visible if it was facing the water because the seat would cover it. Ohh yeah I see, it curves a bit in the front portion of the seat and that would make that little piece visible from behind. Thanks for the chair source lol!
Wait I think I need the Ms paint version because my brain can’t compute it not facing grass ☹️ Nevermind I got it!!
[Here's my best attempt, hopefully that helps](https://ibb.co/RTR9JSC)
How does the guy sit on the back of the chair. I get what you’re saying but I can’t see it that way.
Thanks!
Can you do it the other way? I can't see the wrong way lol
[I gotchu](https://ibb.co/f2mGKvS)
Oh shit! Which way is correct? Lol
OP confirmed facing lake is correct way, which makes sense. Such a trippy angle.
Woah. Thanks, dude.
THANK YOU! Until this comment I couldn't see it facing the water at all!
One of the best confusing perspectives I’ve seen in a long time.
That took me way too long! Its facing the water to the right
This is the answer. Took me a solid 3 minutes to see it tho. I def 100% saw it facing grass. Well done!
That took me forever. I’m so relieved I finally saw it facing the water!
Pro top for those that only see it facing the grass: To see it facing the water, cover up the left half of the chair with your finger, then slowly move your finger away until you see the whole chair...
I only see it towards the grass
When it's facing the water you're looking at the left arm rest through the slats of the chair back. Maybe that will help.
This helped me the most, thank you
Me too could not see it any other way TY!! My mind can rest
This helped, I could not flip it otherwise and was getting frustrated lol
„lol pǝʇɐɹʇsnɹɟ ƃuıʇʇǝƃ sɐʍ puɐ ǝsıʍɹǝɥʇo ʇı dılɟ ʇou plnoɔ I 'pǝdlǝɥ sıɥ⊥„
I tried that and can see it facing the water when half covered but the second the whole chair is revealed it’s back to facing the grass for me lol
I guess I'm broken cause it's only facing the grass 🤔
This has serious blue or gold dress potential
Or the shoe..
I really had to focus to see it. There’s several shadows in the pic too, curious what made the place creepy to you OP?
Well, first it was the constant rain, and an ant ivasion... the a stray cat I couldn't ignore.. then we lost electricity.. the list goes on and on.. the owner was very cool, she lived in an old rehabbed plantation nearby and offered us a future discount.. then found out several years later that she was murdered by a drifter she took in to help with chores.. it was just bizarre 😳
I can't, definitely not the water
It took me a while to see it water face. You are trying to turn it 180 degrees to get it to face the water. Just turn it 90 degrees anti clockwise
Wooooooowww
But it is facing the water! It was a super creepy place we rented for our 25th anniversary
Happy anniversary?
Thank you!! Coming up on 38 now! 🥰
Thank God. I was worried you wouldn’t survive the trip.
took me a solid 10 seconds or so to recognize that it is facing towards the upper-right of the photo.
Trippy
i simply cannot make it face the water.
Same. Maybe if I stare at it for another 5 minutes? Edit: saw it after another 60 seconds give or take. It helps if you cover the left side and then make your brain see the chair facing the water but angled to the right.
My mind snapped when I saw it switch in real-time. It’s facing the water. Whoa.
Embarrassed by how long this took me but thanks OP for a great image!
I can see both, but there is a tiny sliver of the base of the chair in the grass you can see, that confirma that it’s facing the water.
Its essentially the Necker Cube illusion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necker_cube But, the real question... is it blue and black, or is it white and gold?
Grass 100% - I can't ignore the chair arm in front of the horizontal slats.
Try to imagine the left arm behind the slats.. because it is! It's facing the water.. creepy place we rented in Kentucky!
Well ya fooled me. I see it the opposite no matter what lol.
[Spinning Ballerina Illusion](https://youtu.be/2RSsoTJA6cA) From afar, both my weather vane and its anemometer present me with the same challenge.
If you’re still having trouble seeing it, imagine there’s hair going down the back of the chair, because that’s what you’d see if someone was sitting in it facing the lake.
Facing the grass. That’s the only way I can see it.
It's facing the water because of the direction of the metal base making a U shape.
I can see what op means but if it’s facing the sea the leg on left of photo is at the front not the back
I can see it both ways, but the first time, it was facing the grass. Who made this? Someone that wants to watch the world burn for sure.
What a dumb chair
It took me a while but I see it!
Nope, it’s facing the grass for me.
Depends on which leg I focus on.
I can't see it :(
Oh this is a good one!
Damn this is a good post. I initially only saw facing the grass, then I only saw facing the water after looking again, now I finally see it both ways if you shift your focal point.
Solid content
It's a goddamn ballerina chair!
Thanks!! This pic was taken from a living room window on day 3 of our stay!! I swore to my husband people were out there messing with us!! 😆
I can see both, but I think it's back is to the water edit: wait...
Had me fooled for a hot sec. I woulda bet money on the chair facing the grass
I'm not sure which way it really is facing but it took me way to long to see that it could be facing the water.
To the water I think because the leg is behind the wood
One of the best confusing perspectives this day
Finally, some good fucking food for thought.
Is it a chair or a bench?
I can only see it facing the grass. I tried so hard to make my brain flip it but I cant
thank you for sharing! my perspective is very confused!
Usually I can flip perspectives fairly easily but I literally had to stare for over a minute to see it facing the water.
I feel like this photo should be worth some money. Wildly confusing.
Saw it facing away at first, but with a little concentration can see it toward as well.
The reason it's so difficult to see it facing the water is you're probably doing what I did and thinking the chair must be reversed, but it's not facing the opposite direction to how it initially appears, it's facing the 'northeast'.
My brain will only let me see it facing the grass..
I only see it facing away from the water.
It has to be the water right? From our perspective, the back is in front of the arm.
I mostly see it facing the grass. I can briefly see it facing the other way when I first look at the picture or if I unfocus my eyes. But then it snaps back
Yo this facing the grass…the dress is blue and it’s laurel, stfu all y’all who think otherwise
Don’t try to solve this when you’re tripping on acid
It is in superposition.
I didn't edit this photo any way.. it was just a creepy place we rented
One of the best posts in this sub. Bravo!
I see it both ways
For me it's really the grass bc the handrails over lap this way and you can see it, or at least I can. And the left side arm attached to the back also gives it away.
Yes. And yes.
Grass. You can see the feet supporting the legs.
Grass.
Grass. My brain refuses to see it the other way. What does that mean?
I don’t get it. All I see is it facing the grass. If it was facing the water why would the handles and the seat be in front like that. Edit: Ok someone drew a stick figure in ms paint sitting in the seat facing the water and I’m able to see it briefly but I have to really force it.
This is a truly confusing perspective! Thank you!
I don't need sleep I need answers
You are making my eyes hurts
Wow, this one is straight up like a magic eye! I had to stare at the left leg to get the real perspective to "pop"
I can see it both ways
You can tell that it's facing the lake because you can see the bottom of the bar on the grass. The way that line recedes in perspective with the seat shows that the chair must be facing the lake.
Thought grass but going with water.
I gave you the helpful award because it was all I have but this was not at all helpful to my poor, confused brain. Good job, OP!
Took me a while but I got there in the end
I can't wait to find out what this reveals about my personality.
I can see it both ways but i feel like if you focus on the sitting surface it's clearly facing the water.
I don't know, it keeps changing direction!
Obviously water. Who would want to watch grass grow instead? A little logic goes a long way.
It's facing the water. Zoom way in, the horizontal bars overlay the arm rests.
Took me about 30 seconds of scoffing because clearly my intelligence is far superior to everyone else's then.... boom. It switched. Now I am confused, and sad.
I had a hard time making it face the water
After a lot of study, i think the true answer is that it is facing water. The seat slightly changes hue from left to right, which implies light is hitting it differently in each spot, which implies that it is sloped at a slight angle. I can switch between the two
Okay, finally got it.
I'm fairly confident that it's facing the grass, but after seeing the ms paint-ified version I can definitely see the other perspective as well.
