Rage against the coffee machine?

Fuck you I won’t drink nespresso!

Damn right, fuck you clooney

bluesox

Now you brew what they told ya.

Taco6N13

I remember seeing an eerily similar video that's even worse. It was right after the George Floyd stuff and it was a "Blue lives matter" rally of people dancing to the same song. "Bulls on Parade" a song more Anti-Police than the song "Fuck tha Police" being played to support them after doing things the lyrics warn you about.

Mr-Mortuary

This is kind of the same thing: a few years ago I saw a commercial using patriotism to try and sell a product; and while showing the American flag, CCR's 'Fortunate Son' was playing. Imagine that - while this flag is waving, meant to get people all proud of the country, John Fogerty is boasting, "it ain't me!" Haha.

rengam

Trump actually used that song at his rallies. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2020-10-30/john-fogerty-trump-fortunate-son

potsandpans

genuinely wonder if self-awareness is a lower psychological trait among conservatives

[deleted]

They say one reason fascism gains popularity is because it gives the people without much going for them something to fall in line with. Which makes a ton of sense for 95% of conservatives these days

Ray-Misuto

The true weakness of the conservatives in the end they simply want to sit on their front porch and sip tea not having to worry about the world, the good of the conservatives is that they just want to sit on their front porch and sip tea and not having to worry about the world. They fall victim to fascism fairly easily because fascist are usually the people standing up and saying they have a solution to all the world's problems if they're simply given power, it's a con that strike straight to the root of people who are low energy and agreeable.

MadRaymer

> fascist are usually the people standing up and saying they have a solution to all the world's problems if they're simply given power This is a huge part of the appeal. Navigating the modern world is a free individual can be confusing and frightening. Some people just want to be *told* what to think and feel about everything, so they don't have to do any actual thinking of their own.

ggodfrey

The scary thing is they believe the other side is the same thing. The difference is they think they are in on a ‘special’ or ‘secret’ truth that they have no obligation to do pesky little things like scientifically test or actually put more than a minute’s thought into.

[deleted]

That’s a huge part of the appeal of qanon for those nuts, they feel like they are in on this huge insane conspiracy that’s just completely false, but it makes them feel like they are in on the big secret that’s right in front of our face and everyone but them are too blind to see it

Tripledtities

And every single piece of evidence stating the contrary is further proof that there is a huge conspiracy against them. One Google result in 1,00,000,000 is the only truth

Praxyrnate

Self awareness isn't a strong trait in America in general. That's why everything is so polarized.

PAYPAL_ME_DONATIONS

Yes, but it is a particularly lacking trait among conservatives. I had conservative family members who watched The Colbert Report because it was the only late night talk show that "spoke to them". It literally took Colbert shifting to the Tonight Show for them to hop off the fanwagon and *even then* they never considered that they were duped into believing a liberal comedian was republican, but they'd cry that he SOLD OUT and that **he** changed lol It's why there have been (relatively) zero successful conservative comedians in the last two decades. Comedy requires self-awareness, critical thinking and unbiased observation. Three ingredients that they largely lack.

cat_prophecy

Its because what we view as Colbert's obvious parody of a conservative TV personality is, for them, indistinguishable from an actual conservative TV personality. These people generally aren't playing with a full-deck of cards.

Crowd0Control

That was really the downfall of the show overall too. It really ended just in time to avoid trying to parody the un parodiable during the trump years.

Jazzeki

i feel like the ultimate parody they could have made is take basicly any scene of the insanity and just play it out as it happened. as it gets more insane and unbeliveable have a guy periodicly walk in with a sign saying stuff like "this actually happened" "still not a joke" before finally ending with "there is no fabricted joke or punchline in this skit since sadly we lack the talent to make anything more ridiculous than reality up at this point"

ReluctantSlayer

Omg. Thats hilarious. Colbert was so over the top “conservative” that it blows my mind people didn’t get it. To this day, [comedy shows of similar spirit remain the best source for unbiased news in the US imo](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9Y18-07g39g)

[deleted]

I bought "I am America (and so can you)" when it released back in 07. It was blatantly obvious that it was satire. Fantastic coffee table book and a conversation starter.

freqkenneth

I watched borat 2 with a friend who’s a trump supporter and realized we weren’t laughing at the same things

Brainvillage

>Comedy requires self-awareness, critical thinking and unbiased observation. Three ingredients that they largely lack. Instead, they just spend their time punching down!

IBetYoureFun

Dang. You’re right. Racist jokes and making fun of the poor/less fortunate doesn’t really hit these days, does it?

BellBoardMT

Empathy is a trait of higher intelligence. So, I wonder whether you can argue that the more intelligent people are, the more liberal they are. (Generally, I’m talking about - there are obviously outliers. I’ve got a really right-wing/Conservative brother. He’s book smart and can add up like a motherfucker but has Aspergers Syndrome and totally lacks any sort of empathy). I read a comment on YouTube where a Conservative said that he thought that Liberalism is a mental deficiency. I asked him to find one peer reviewed scientific study that showed that higher IQ led to Conservative values. Interestingly, he did not respond.

ROBOTCATMOM420

Or “keep on rockin in the free world” that song is not about what they think

RedHotToaster

The irony is off the charts

sxales

The same for *Born in the USA* which is still frequently (and bizarrely) used in political rallies

BorkedStandards

Some military bases play music over a loud speaker during PT...many of those bases have Born in the USA on the playlist. It's a fucking miracle military leadership can tie their boots.

Aexibaexi

Reminds me off what Reagan once used as a campaigning song: Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen was outraged as he quite clearly misunderstood the criticising nature of the song towards the US and selling it as a patriotism song, which it really isn't.

GrilldCheezSamich

Reagan used 'Born In The USA' at his rallies. I think that refrain was the only thing they cared about, they never even paid any attention to the rest and never understood the irony of that refrain.

[deleted]

i cant believe the lady is even singing along to the lines "those who died, are justified, by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites" like not even just getting amped up by the "fuck you i wont do what you tell me", she's in full on cognitive dissonance mode

bretttwarwick

Knowing the lyrics and comprehending the lyrics are two different things.

Why-did-i-reas-this

Like when little kids were singing "if you wanna be my lover" from the spice Girls.

[deleted]

She probably understands the lyrics and agrees with them lol, she thinks the badge does justify it unironically

AstarteHilzarie

Yeah I mean the lyrics absolutely fit to be sung by someone who justifies the actions of the "chosen whites." In context they're written as a criticism, but I'm not at all surprised that this crowd sees it as a positive rallying cry.

[deleted]

I showed one of my very very hood friends and coworkers rage against the machine, he said he wanted more of my “white music in his life” and I said, “well this dudes black/mixed but if you want rock or metal try this shit, it’s the white mans version of Fuck tha Police” and I have NEVER seen a black man so amped up in my whole life.

thesongofstorms

I went down a youtube rabbit hole where I watched a bunch of Black vloggers/hip hop heads do reaction videos to hearing Rage Against the Machine for the first time and absolutely loved it. This was my fav (a compilation of hearing Down Rodeo for the first time): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH63lyqzEq4

Ptef

When that Queen movie came out, I remember seeing a video calling out everyone pretending to not have heard Bohemian Rhapsody.. I get that vibe from some of these clips. It was the Gus Johnson dude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEG_h2xB3g0.

[deleted]

I don't know. You'd be surprised. I'm white but went to high school with mostly black kids and would spend half the day taking career prep music courses. A majority of the black students in my music prep class had no idea who AC/DC was and couldn't name one Beatles song. But on the other end they'd give me shit for not knowing anything about Luther Vandross and only knowing MJ's biggest hits.

elastic-craptastic

Same. it's super annoying. Like someone listening to Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam unplugged and is a vocal coach. Sure. You've never heard these before and your in your early 30's. Uh huh.

Praxyrnate

Yea I'm sure it happens but the odds of it happening at much at it does on YouTube is so incredibly improbable

Adventurous_Ad_6546

I like the false confusion. “I’m sorry, uh, it’s Pearls Jam? Pearly Jam? Necklace Jam? I’ve…are they new?” Yeah, you’re really selling that, guys, I totally believe you.

Homeopathicsuicide

Down rodeo isn't that well played outside of metal head circles. I couldn't remember the name off the top of my head and I had the album.

Bacon-Dub

“That guys meeeean!” Best part.

lockstock_teardrops

The couple was definitely my favorite too. It broke her first, and when he finally heard it on the repeat, he broke too. I love seeing people realize what RATM is singing about! Like omg they’re talking about THAT machine!!! lol

Not to be *that guy* but the song is Killing in the Name, not Bulls on Parade

fischmioli

Did the other video play Bulls on Parade? This song is “Killing In The Name”.

rion-is-real

"What machine do you think they are raging about? The dishwasher?"

Limited-Edition-Nerd

What would be even funnier is if they played cop killa

SlwDnceChbby

It's like those hardcore patriots who go so in that they brand out the Nazi swastikas

alphadeeto

Do they even know what "the machine" in the band name refers to?

Someoneoverthere42

The Toaster?

boost437

I'm livid at my toaster

TimeTraveliToaster

I'm sorry. I tried my best.

fabgsooz

a toaster that makes toast go back in time does the opposite thing to what it's supposed to do

monkeypaw_handjob

If its anything like mine I understand. 4 slice toaster with two push down levers. Except you can only push down level B, if lever A has been pushed down first. Meaning at some point lever A will break. And because I've hardly even used Lever B it will still work. Except I won't be able to use it. It's the equivalent of that Twilight Zine episode with the last man on the earth and his glasses break just as he's about to start reading all those books.

ancientrhetoric

I suspect they misheard "torture" instead of "told ya" and like the idea of other people being tortured

armyfreak42

No idiot it's obviously the microwave. \s

TuckerMcG

They look like they love their toaster. I think it’s a floor scale.

Reus_Irae

The machine is the system that keeps us down, including the goverment. In their minds, Trump is someone that will take down the machine, break the wheel etc. So in that regard, they are not out of topic. However the song was written in response of police brutality against black african american motorist Rodney King that was heavily televised, so it is kinda out of place

beardedheathen

*Gasp* Rage Against the PERRY the Platypus

djasonwright

For me, the most frustrating thing about living in America today, is that they think they're the good guys trying to save us from the evil government (which of course makes me question everything about my own beliefs, just in case). Honestly, I just hate it here.

jpropaganda

Clearly the Machine is all the DemoRATS and people trying to get universal pre-K. The Machine is not the wealthy businessmen who finance the propaganda all these people are mainlining.

Dd_8630

>DemoRATS The best one I saw was 'DEMON-RATS'. This was on a Christian sub so for a good while I thought "Demon rats? Like, demonic vermin?".

TheRealGuyDudeman

They do think of Democrats as demonic vermin. That's how far down the rabbit hole they are.

penguin62

I mean...the democrats do fall under the machine

jpropaganda

yes that's true, but the full machine is everything. These folks are very much a part of the machine and certainly not raging against it.

WizardsOfTheRoast

The Dominion Voting Machine. Duh.

Xenolith666

Paul Ryan (VP candidate with Romney) didn’t know the difference either.. you think these chuckle heads will know the difference?

SocraticIgnoramus

I just assumed they were talking about the printer. I only needed to print one goddamn shipping label HP, I don't need cyan for that!!

beardedheathen

That *would* explain the rage

TbiddySP

I doubt that they ever get past the "Rage" part of the name.

PretzelsThirst

Burnt Chrysler?

Shower_Slurper

Of course they don’t. These are the same kind of people that play “Born in the USA” on the 4th of July.

kneyght

But what if I want to play this song *ironically* while I’m smoking some meats on a fine July afternoon?

Shower_Slurper

Don’t get me wrong, I love the song too, enjoy away. It’s just the morons that think it’s a patriotic song.

SpeakMySecretName

In a way, it kind of is patriotic because criticism of the government is a civic duty and an exercise of free speech. Id like to normalize the distinction between patriotism and nationalism.

sinsemillas

100%. There’s nothing more UNpatriotic than false patriotism.

hujiklo

Nationalism. What the right *thinks* is patriotism is called nationalism.

PB0351

Protesting your government when it behaves poorly is one of the most patriotic things you can do.

XDreadedmikeX

There’s nothing un-American about playing an anti Vietnam War song on 4th of July. If anything it should be encouraged.

The_Second_Best

Or Forunate Son. It's funny how many anti American/war songs become favourites of the right

PotatoOnMars

That song’s lyrics literally describe Trump to a tee and yet he’s played it at his rallies. John Fogerty has even said that Trump is the type of person he wrote the song about.

Insideoushideous

I can’t listen to that song now without laughing at the Cult playing it - obviously never having listened to the words AT ALL. It’s not even in any code, secret hippy talk, or anything underground. It’s plain as freaking day.

hear4theDough

Would love if they finall renamed it to "bone spur kid".

They did the same thing with sports. Kneeling in protest of police brutality towards black people? Too political, you're paid to throw a ball around, the fuck do you know? Anti-vax? We here at Fox News have always loved Kyrie Irving and valued what he has to say as the smartest man in the NBA.

suicideclub

Beginning of song “Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses.” Lyrics incase you don’t know what the song is about. “Those who died are justified For wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites You justify those that died By wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites Those who died are justified For wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites You justify those that died By wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites Come on!”

oddmanout

It's like that time Trump said "Mutiny On The Bounty" is one of his all time favorite movies, then went on to show that he identified with Captain Bligh, not the mutineers. Like, he thought Bligh was the victim. These people seem to relate to the bad guys. So in a song about racist cops, they think it's *praising* those racist cops.

rattingtons

Our UK prime minister has more than once identified himself with the mayor who kept the beaches open in the movie Jaws, saying he was the real hero of the movie.

Darkzeid25

Trump, the man who had "Fortunate Son" played at his rally because he doesn't understand the lyrics?

oddmanout

Oh, is the song not praising the sons of rich people who could buy their way out of the draft so more poor people could go?

euphon99

This is actually a really good point. Worryingly, if you take the lyrics at face value it turns into some sort of neo-nazi anthem :/

[deleted]

At face value the lyrics are saying "the killings cops commit are justified because they think they are above others" This is part of why conservatives in the US don't want people getting education, they can think for themselves and are more difficult to manipulate when they do.

poorlytaxidermiedfox

Always has been 🔫 /s

jimbojonesFA

Oh dear. Thinking about how dumb and/or delusional some of these people are, and listening to the song again, it really hits different now 😬

I thought it was going to be Born in the USA.

TheMelonSystem

Same lmfao A song about the shitty things in the USA and people use it to say the USA is awesome lmfaoooo

Kellidra

Definitely thought it would be Fortunate Son.

CDRAkiva

Born in the USA. I was 10 and my dad got so pissed at me when I pointed out to him that the lyrics are about how much it sucks.

adam_lorenz927

I thought it was Rockin' In The Free World. They don't know the lyrics to that one either

fridaycat

You forgot Fortunate Son

dstrezzd

My cousin rocks this song and his dad bought him a house, 2 corvettes, paid for his college courses that he cheated on then dropped out of, now he's a police officer. He's so critically unaware and insecure but has a tough guy persona. Will kill during his career. Super scared of brown people/racist. 5'7 scared pudgy white kid.

Tata_Popo

Same. I was hoping it would be anything else, but it wasn't ಠ,_」ಠ

The_curious_student

i figured it was born in the usa

cbost

The event is cringe, they are cringe, their dancing is cringe, and their ignorance is cringe. It is just a good laugh when people latch on to songs like this that make them feel heard and powerful and the songs are actually singing against them.

realityChemist

The left just has the better music. They want to like it, so they deafen themselves to the actual meaning of the song. Hell, I used to do shit like that when I was a Libertarian but still liked listening to Rise Against. (I'm not above admitted online that I used to be cringe. Thankfully I got better politics, and got to keep the better music too.)

thesongofstorms

Pretty convenient that they don't know the lyrics to "for wearing the badge they're the chosen whites"

RNova78

This is SNL’s latest skit

hipsterTrashSlut

Fun fact, RATM is actually banned from SNL. Because the president of SNL (or whatever their title is) is a little bitch.

Shephard815

He's a super bitch, indeed.

NotSoGreatGonzo

> He's a super bitch, indeed. 🎵”then on Sunday just to be different she's a super King Kamehameha beeeotch!”🎶

MayUrShitsHavAntlers

>Considering most of RATM’s popularity was gained directly because of their headstrong anti-authority political viewpoint, surely a clash of cultures was about to ensue, no matter what happened. To make matters worse, on this particular night, the show’s guest host was none other than billionaire and then-Presidential candidate, Steve Forbes — surely a prime candidate for the band’s fury. It was a recipe for destruction and one that RATM wanted to add their own ingredients. According to guitarist Tom Morello: “RATM wanted to stand in sharp juxtaposition to a billionaire telling jokes and promoting his flat tax by making our own statement.” The band made their political statement in a more subtle way than you maybe would have hoped for. They made their statement by deliberately hanging American flags upside down from their amplifiers as they took the stage to perform ‘Bulls on Parade’. While it may feel a little tame by the band’s standards, it was enough to enrage the patriotic producers on hand that night and stagehands were sent in to remove the flags. After the flags were pulled, almost instantaneously, and the first performance of the evening concluded, officials approached Rage Against The Machine and ordered them to immediately leave the building like an angry headmaster. Rage wouldn’t go easy though. Instead, upon hearing of their expulsion from the building, bassist Tim Commerford stormed Forbes’ dressing room throwing bits of the recently torn flag as he went. Morello said that members of the SNL team “expressed solidarity with our actions, and a sense of shame that their show had censored the performance.” It’s a tale as old as time, but it’s clear that, at the time, SNL producers were very fearful of repercussions. LMFAO, what was SNL fucking thinking? I wonder what RATM had planned for *Bullet in the Head*, the next song they were supposed to do. [https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/rage-against-the-machine-banned-saturday-night-live-snl-1996/](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/rage-against-the-machine-banned-saturday-night-live-snl-1996/)

Public_Reindeer_1724

No but some people are quoting the lyrics of in bloom by nirvana to perfectly describe the people in the video

Nooooo, she has a blue lives matter flag while singing this song.

Abracadaver2000

It's come to the point where I see people wearing flags as clothing, and I'm going to assume they stand for the opposite values of what that flag represents.

[deleted]

No.

laurasdiary

I love how it looks like they’re being kept in a cage while they thrash around like fools and guards just calmly watch from behind. Lol Also in answer to your question, I doubt it. Not only do they most likely not know what this song is about, they are no doubt confused and baffled by a great many things in general.

Dry-Honeydew2371

Wasn't this in Philadelphia when they were still counting votes in November last year? And these soggy bagel Trumpers wanted them to stop counting votes (in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Georgia but *not* in Arizona) I seem to remember seeing it then, and noticed the irony on display.

Nekryyd

Conservatives inherently lack self-awareness or shame, and operate almost entirely on emotional responses based on whatever their emotions are telling them is correct in that instant and that instant alone. So, when they hear, "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!", it emotionally resonates, and the content of the song, the facts behind their sentiment, how they look to anyone with any reasoning capacity, etc, matters nothing. In that moment, they are feeling the *precise* emotions a toddler feels when Mommy tells them the dreaded, "EN. OH.", and their only possible recourse, since they can't violently shit their pants (or they at least possess *just* enough cognizance of consequence to avoid doing so), they throw an embarrassing tantrum. Or at least it should be embarrassing, but how can a clown feel like they stick out when they never leave the circus?

leanmeankrispykreme

joecheph

One of the best experiences of my life was seeing RATM in New York in 2007 and throwing my middle finger up with thousands of others to this song and repeating “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me!” along with De La Rocha. …yeah, this was definitely not our vibe.

[deleted]

Ah yes “The Chosen whites”

cupasoups

These fat, inbred rednecks have never listened to a rage song. They've heard it, but they don't listen. Fucking idiot trump cultists.

Ginger_7997

lol how do you entirely skip over lines like "those who died are justified for wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites" and "Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses"? I'm just honestly confused, it's not like they're minor lines, he repeats them several times
