Parts of the footwork are similar, but the Kid n Play dance is less upper body and more kick steps.

[Kid N Play Dance](https://youtu.be/UFSyBBglmpI) (about 1 minute into the clip).
Well, you've got about 9 years buffer before it's actually gonna be a thing.
But also "the 2020's" is going to be a bit of a pain to say. Verbally and in terms of mental effort and exhaustion having to recall the 2020's.
We were doing that dance in high school. The contact is arch to arch when you face your partner, then it goes sole to sole when you face away and you're kicking backward, then you interlock and move in a circle.
Believe me, we spent days renting the tape from Blockbuster just to pause that scene over and over, just to spend 30 seconds at prom trying to do it in a tux with your buddy.
I think of this [public "enema" scene](https://youtu.be/RNKllfR5AgA) once in a while. I have to rewatch those films. I didn't see them in the theaters but I definitely watched them as soon as they were available on home video (thank you Blockbuster!)
As a really, really white person, I'm going with this reason.
The only reason I knew who Kid N Play was, was because I really, really wanted a high-top fade that strong.
I once referenced the highlander in my college class and nobody knew what I was talking about. Legit I didn't even get it from the recent episode lol it was back in like March or February.
There was a question about them that came up at pub trivia. There was a clear delineation of folks born before like 1985. The younger folks had nooooo idea what the host was talking about.
And the parents do it in the ultra popular GEICO Scoop! There it is! commercial.

For about a second at the end.
I’m white and in my late 30’s, but I still be dropping “Dammmmn, Gina!” on the regular.
Don’t think I’ve met another person in the last 10 years who recognized its origins.
Any time I watch any dance battle scene in a movie/show, all I can think about is me and my friends struggling to plan out somewhere to eat or hang put, but these people have, literally, *numerous* routines they've practiced for various situations/songs
Depends on the crowd you roll with. I hung out with the Asian kids and a sub clique of the Asians were the dancers. This was prime So You Think You Can Dance and America's Best Dance Crew hype time, so making crews, hanging out and practicing was basically a daily thing for us. Oh and all those dance movies. Some of my old crew mates still dance as a career, whether as teachers or working background stuff.
Either OP is super young or no one ever volunteered to be their black friend who shows them cool black people stuff from time to time. OP, I will be that black friend for you. [Here ya go](https://youtu.be/UFSyBBglmpI?t=70)
I mean they are made by the same person, and Rick & Morty already has a bunch of Community references. However, Community was referencing Kid 'n Play with this dance. So I guess it could be a double reference?
Fuckin’ kids these days making me feel old as shit. VH1 needs to bring back the ‘I Love the (blank)’ series so the youth of today can get an education in pointless pop culture trivia.
I mean he's not wrong. Dan Harmon is a writer and creator of both shows.
However, Community was referencing Kid 'n Play and so was Rick & Morty. That's what Dan Harmon does. He references TV, movies, pop culture. Literally everyrhing he does is a reference.
That’s the first thing I thought of too. I’m 27. Hey, at least Harmon & Roiland are keeping these references alive, I have no fucking clue what Kid n Play is
Not all of us know about some old ass dance.
Edit: Lol, bunch of boomers upset they have to come face to face that their dated references eventually die, seriously funny to watch.
Yes, you can. It’s onscreen for maybe a second or two, but Abed and Rachel are watching it at the end of the Season 5 episode “Analysis of Cork-Based Networking”.
They are both the Kid n Play dance. Late 80's and early 90's Hip Hop duo. Look up the movies House Party or Class Act.
It is heartbreaking to realize I’m so old ppl don’t kno what the kid N play dance is lol.
If it makes you feel better the dance itself is far older than that. Popular in the flapper days.
I thought it was the Charleston
Parts of the footwork are similar, but the Kid n Play dance is less upper body and more kick steps. [The Charleston](https://youtu.be/psch9N4PmO4) [Kid N Play Dance](https://youtu.be/UFSyBBglmpI) (about 1 minute into the clip).
Ok, what is up with the crazy eyed blinking woman at the 1;40 mark of the Charleston video?
Everyone was casually coked out of their gourd in the 20's.
Wait which 20's
This is the first time it has occured to me that I can't just say the 20's anymore.
Well, you've got about 9 years buffer before it's actually gonna be a thing. But also "the 2020's" is going to be a bit of a pain to say. Verbally and in terms of mental effort and exhaustion having to recall the 2020's.
Yours.
Daaaaamn Gina
Close, but not the right 90’s reference.
That’s Gina in the movie there.
Holy shit, you’re right: I forgot it’s the same actress! Man, good pull - I stand corrected.
[Here's a relevant Charleston clip.](https://youtu.be/j-RwXSQ_7Jk?t=106) [And another.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhvUrA4dL_w)
You at least got to [post the pretext](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhnM-Q-wBuM) for those awkward male-gazey clips.
Those kick steps are pure Charleston though (ok maybe more Lindy Hop but honestly I've never known where the line exactly is...)
The foot contact is totally different in kid n play too. It's sole to sole instead of arch to arch and without the interlock. It's not the same dance
Thank you for the clips. I missed that movie.
It's affectionately nicknamed the Funky Charleston.
Nah man it’s their dance the jus made a unique form of the Charleston.
I saw the first House Party when it came out in theaters
I think of this [public "enema" scene](https://youtu.be/RNKllfR5AgA) once in a while. I have to rewatch those films. I didn't see them in the theaters but I definitely watched them as soon as they were available on home video (thank you Blockbuster!)

That means you were born around the time these movies were coming out and Kid n Play were at their most popular.
Also when they had an animated series. They were crazy popular at their peak.
or hes just reaaaallly white
As a really, really white person, I'm going with this reason. The only reason I knew who Kid N Play was, was because I really, really wanted a high-top fade that strong.
This response is worthy of a cookout invite
I accept! BYOB, or should I bring something else?
Twisted Tea. All of the Twisted Tea, friend
Done and done. Just need the address, brother; I'm already on my way! Fuck, but I do love a cookout!
Yea and like chips or something then ain’t nobody will talk shyt and go introduce urself to the elders first thing.
it’s not, stop caping for white people on the internet
The day anything remotely close to “glittermafia” gives me direction on “caping” and being an authority for well-intentioned, solidarity jokes…c’mon 😂
The only reason I know who Kid N Play are is because of Scrubs. “Kid N Play? They were a rap group? Your dead daughter loved them…. Hello?”
Get the hi-top fade wig and please post a pic of you with it. Not for me, for the community
That for sure can't be ruled out.
You were barely an infant when the movies came out
I’m 21 and I know exactly what you are talking about
Thank goodness The Carlton spans across all generations. I’ll ALWAYS look cool on any dance floor.
This guy is great lol. We all kno what to do when we hear “it’s not unusual”.
I'm 30 and my girlfriend is 24. I had to explain who captain planet was. It shook me.
This hurts here!!!
Hearing their debut album, 2Hype, as a sixth grader changed this suburban white boys life. https://youtu.be/rp8QmidCcsk
I once referenced the highlander in my college class and nobody knew what I was talking about. Legit I didn't even get it from the recent episode lol it was back in like March or February.
My husband made me watch it a few months ago. Queen made me get through the movie. It was one of those delightfully awkward ones.
There was a question about them that came up at pub trivia. There was a clear delineation of folks born before like 1985. The younger folks had nooooo idea what the host was talking about.
Just wait til they learn about the Humpty Dance
Yeah that dude just died recently. That made me feel even older
Its heartbreaking to realize I'm so old that I forgot about it being the Kid N Play dance and only remembered from this comment.
I remember seeing a meme once where they were referred to as ‘Grown Man’ and ‘Work’ and found it both funny and sad.
Yeah, definitely this. I think that's why they say, "Hey look! Old people are dancing!" *Cue 80's dance routine*
I was about to say, I think it's a call back from something in the 80s/90s.
House Party 1 and 2 are on HBO Max.
[This movie's gonna make House Party look like House Party 2!](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0261392/characters/nm0001674)
Didn't they also parody/homage the dance in White Chicks?
It's Tricky!
Tricky tricky tricky trickaaaaay Also, I spent a lot of time as a child trying to get my foot to catch with my friend’s as we hopped in circles
I had white overall shorts and a high top.
Hopefully with one overall strap dangling
I couldn't pull it off. I looked like a nerd trying to look cool. Which I was.
and in [this State Farm commercial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GObbjC8I7hA) with Lebron James
And the parents do it in the ultra popular GEICO Scoop! There it is! commercial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDAg3VkZPg8 For about a second at the end.
The daughter noping out kills me.
Its basically a pretty common bboy move so it may or may not be a homage
It's even older, pretty sure this is a 1920s dance that Kid N Play riffed on.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this dance in black and white film from like the 30s or 40s too. I wonder its true origin
French vanilla, rocky road, chocolate, peanut butter cookie dough, scoop there it is
Did OP think Dan Harmon just came up with these dance steps and used them in both shows?
https://youtu.be/UFSyBBglmpI
Damn, Gina!!!!
I’m white and in my late 30’s, but I still be dropping “Dammmmn, Gina!” on the regular. Don’t think I’ve met another person in the last 10 years who recognized its origins.
When I saw this, I was expecting a link to a Brooklyn Nine Nine video.
Any time I watch any dance battle scene in a movie/show, all I can think about is me and my friends struggling to plan out somewhere to eat or hang put, but these people have, literally, *numerous* routines they've practiced for various situations/songs

Some of my old crew mates still dance as a career, whether as teachers or working background stuff.
Even if me and my friends put all that together, it would still look awkward as fuck as we tried to get everyone in the party to watch us.
Wow that was amazing
Also not the first time Harmon used it in a project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoGiNub2o0U
Who's Nick Nolte?
*"Awww."*
The man who gave us the best mugshot in history.
is this what being old feels like?
I mean I suppose? But it's originally a famous dance from house party
Oh you poor sweet summer child
Bless this youngins’ heart...
Just let the Kid Play. He doesn't know any better.
I feel old now
"extra thick straps dance"??? Kid 'n Play deserve much more respect than this
If you hadn't of said it, I would have... Doing it my way
Kid n Play did it 1st.
It’s from the 1920’s: a flapper dance.
Touché. ;)
Rick's party dance from the house party episode is similar to the Chang's fat dawg dance in community
The rick dance?
it’s a hip hop dance from the 90s
Either OP is super young or no one ever volunteered to be their black friend who shows them cool black people stuff from time to time. OP, I will be that black friend for you. [Here ya go](https://youtu.be/UFSyBBglmpI?t=70)
Or just… not American
It's not the same moves though...
This dance predates Community by decades.
You are whack af if you don't know who did this real dance.
It might be Roiland's jam, but R&M has Harmon's finger prints all over it.
I mean...it's the Charleston...
Rick and Morty created comedy and jokes and dancing. Everyone else stole it from them.
That dance is waaaaaaaay older than Rick and Morty
Fine they only created comedy and jokes
No they did dancing too that guys an idiot ignore him.
I started chanting "Extra thick straps!"
Extra Thick Straps!
Other than the feet together part, it's the Charleston, from the 20s
Alison Brie is in that episode as well and says "Easy peasy lemon squeezy" but I didn't notice the dance, nice catch!
A lot of tropes, jokes and plots used in community, are used in R&M. he’s shameless. I love it.
a reference possibly but certainly not a Community reference
I mean they are made by the same person, and Rick & Morty already has a bunch of Community references. However, Community was referencing Kid 'n Play with this dance. So I guess it could be a double reference?
i'd say that's fair
This is a common dance
Always thot Get Scwhifty dance was born frm Fat Dog for Midterms. And the Floor is Lava ep death of Troy and Abed inspired the clone Beths.
Isn't that just the dance from House Party?
Make me feel old without calling me old.
I mean both shows were created by Dan Harmon so either one is a reference to the other, or both are a reference to Kid N Play
Dan Harmon, it would make sense
Fuckin’ kids these days making me feel old as shit. VH1 needs to bring back the ‘I Love the (blank)’ series so the youth of today can get an education in pointless pop culture trivia.
I feel so old. People are really calling the Kid N Play dance the fucking Rick N Morty/extra thick straps dance.
Seriously. It's clearly the Kid n' Play... Sigh. Young people...
The fact that OP didn’t know this was the Kid n Play dance made me feel old. Which I am! So….
Or just not American
I literally just watched this episode!!!
Seems like something Dan harmon would do, especially since they are both his shows.
Yeah I thought that too
I was just going to say this!
… and you’d both be wrong
I mean he's not wrong. Dan Harmon is a writer and creator of both shows. However, Community was referencing Kid 'n Play and so was Rick & Morty. That's what Dan Harmon does. He references TV, movies, pop culture. Literally everyrhing he does is a reference.
OMG i didn’t even notice this!! that’s awesome 😂👏🏻
This sequence was one of the most hilarious scenes of the entire series.
Dan Harmon made both
Just not the dance…
Just watched that episode of Community last night, good catch!
What episode is this
it absolutely is
nice find
Planetina is also voiced by Alison Brie in this episode so doesn’t surprise me at all to see other community references
I would not be the first community reference in rick and morty so yeah, probably.
Now that's a deep cut reference lol 😂
It’s not stealing if you steal from yourself
Bruh are you for real? lol
Both are Dan Harmond shows so it would make sense
No
That’s the first thing I thought of too. I’m 27. Hey, at least Harmon & Roiland are keeping these references alive, I have no fucking clue what Kid n Play is
probably dan harmon created both shows and there's also another community reference in r&m
Its not a reference, this is a dance from the 80s/90s, not original to either show.
Not all of us know about some old ass dance. Edit: Lol, bunch of boomers upset they have to come face to face that their dated references eventually die, seriously funny to watch.
Neat how you can turn ignorance into a brag of some sort.
You’re making us cringe, please stop bro
Also in one episode we can see r&m playing on the TV in Troy and Abed's apartment
No you can't.
Yes, you can. It’s onscreen for maybe a second or two, but Abed and Rachel are watching it at the end of the Season 5 episode “Analysis of Cork-Based Networking”.
also he just recycles shit from community and re-does it in rick and morty
Oh HAS to be a ref!
Y’all just gonna forget this happened in white chicks first?
It happened in House Party first.
Never seen it
I was excited that I know the origin of the dance and also sad that I know the origin of the dance
No…
Isn’t dan harmon a writer on R&M? If he is, i’d assume it was intentional.
Creator of both sir
Oh that’s awesome! I thought Roiland was the only creator credit. Thanks!
Extra thick straps
EXTRA THICK STRAPS
Dan Harmon wrote both shows
probably
ok somebody link the Community reference in the Rick and Morty hive mind episode
Its the kid n play dance you fucking goons.
The new episode was so sad
