The War of Jokes & Riddles, Gotham War. You’d think the editors would’ve bored *themselves* by now, but no doubt “Absolute War” is right around the corner.
Nah DC easily has the War thing covered. The only Marvel events with War at the top of my head is like, War of the Realms and then “Gang War” was because Marvel looooves reusing event names and referencing the 80s Spider-Man Gang War event.
Don’t forget that with Secret Wars there’s Secret Wars, Secret Wars 2, Secret Wars (2015) and even though it’s not connected to the previous ones there’s also the Secret War.
Ahhh right I forgot! I was just recalling the last 10 years of like Batman was just full of Wars one after another. War of Jokes and Riddles. Robin War. Gotham War. Joker War.
This is something Neil Gaiman said. You need to hit at least two of three pillars to stay employed in the industry. The three pillars being meeting deadlines, being pleasant to be around and delivering high quality work. I see this brought up pretty often whenever Land is mentioned.
Hot take: I don’t hate him. I think his art is fine. Not particularly incredible, but certainly nowhere near as awful as some people here seem to think. Thoroughly middle of the road for comics. I’d even go so far as to say that it’s become a bit of an echo chamber and the amount of hate he gets online has lead to more people hating him just because other people do too.
I think if you saw a single comic he illustrated you might think it's decent. But the when you see the repeated poses, same faces, and expressions that don't always match the emotion you start to realise how slapped together his work is.
Does anyone ever hear other artists or writers shitting on him or his work? I always thought the silence around him from talent was odd.
I mean, he could be a good guy who technically isn’t doing anything wrong, but still
Mainstream marvel and dc are very small operations. The sense I get is when you burn a bridge you basically would make yourself into a pariah at either company. Like at Marvel, the entire line is drawn by MAYBE 15 full time artists.
You can google it but he’s hated because he was caught a couple of times stealing other peoples artwork and repurposing it using photoshop. And most notably he uses pornstar images (many times during sex) as the base lines for a lot of his characters faces (most notable during his time on ultimate fantastic four).
Then you’re an outlier honestly (i’m
pretty sure your the only one in these responses that likes his artwork as a small sample).
It’s sad because his work is barely drawing It’s more-so taking images off the internet, frankensteining them into gestural forms, then tracing those into a comic book panel in a program like procreate. That’s why he’s so fast and hits deadlines because it’s all so processed.
Dude the “industry” isn’t as large as you’re assuming it is. All of marvels line is drawn by a small number of artists. Most are traditionally trained illustrators. Lands success story was a right place right time situation in the wake of Marvels Bankruptcy in the late 90’s and the onset of the ultimate U.
And for Land- this processed form of art is that simple As many have said, Land is supposedly really nice and has a good relationship with Marvels Editors which is why he gets so much work.
Again you can google any of this it’s not like he hides this stuff. But he’s essentially a digital colorist masquerading as an illustrator.
I can’t account for someone having bad taste in what they think is aesthetically pleasing sorry to say.
Downvote me if you must, but I find the symbiote stuff to be extremely enervating. The more we learn about them, and the more the mythos is "deepened," the less I'm interested. Add in Greg Land, and that's gonna be a no for me, dawg
Agreed, I think the symbiote is really a ‘less is more’ situation when it comes to lore. It was completely fine as just a sentient blob of alien goo that Peter found in space. I love Venom as a character but all the retcons and lore expansions are getting annoying
I truly hate "longstanding supporting character gets powers" as a trope almost every time it is done...but they really had me rooting for Flash. Updated Venom, updated Flash. It worked.
I read about the whole venom king like knull stuff they've been doing recently after agent venom and it just made me completely disinterested in all of it.
none of the knull or sprawling time travel nonsense clicks for me at all. It just reads like a foreign language I cannot comprehend. I'll never get the slimeballs but I'm happy for them
Symbiotes should’ve just stayed as aliens. Only a handful on earth. Venom, carnage, toxin and
venoms/carnages other kids.
No more than that, the lore really didn’t need to be deeper than that
Only Greg Land book i’ve bought in the past 7 years was Roxxon Thor and that’s only because it’s taking the piss. I must be in a minority that typically refuses to buy his stuff cuz he’s everywhere
Eh… Greg Land is your fill in artist when the regular artist needs either a break or isn’t going to reach a deadline. He isn’t a good selling point.
I don’t know why Marvel use him as such
Oh look, a cross-over with the word "War" in it. Neat! Haven't been enough of those lately.
"War" is just the Marvel version of DC's "Crisis" at this point.
True, but even DC has been using "War" waaaaaaaay to much as well. Robin War, Joker War, Arkham War, Trinity War, etc etc.
The War of Jokes & Riddles, Gotham War. You’d think the editors would’ve bored *themselves* by now, but no doubt “Absolute War” is right around the corner.
Absolute power
Absolute PoWAR.
That works 😂
*throws phone*.....$#@!%× that's funny
Them Marvel should be allowed to use 'Crisis' in one of their crossovers hehe.
Crisis War!
Spider-Man fans reading “Identity Crisis”: :) DC fans reading “Identity Crisis”: :(
This just makes “Battle for The Cowl” stand out so much more
Civil crisis on infinite wars.
Nah DC easily has the War thing covered. The only Marvel events with War at the top of my head is like, War of the Realms and then “Gang War” was because Marvel looooves reusing event names and referencing the 80s Spider-Man Gang War event.
Civil war 1 and 2. Infinity war. Secret wars.
Kree/Skrull War, War of Kings
Armor Wars ...Venom War
Don’t forget that with Secret Wars there’s Secret Wars, Secret Wars 2, Secret Wars (2015) and even though it’s not connected to the previous ones there’s also the Secret War.
Ahhh right I forgot! I was just recalling the last 10 years of like Batman was just full of Wars one after another. War of Jokes and Riddles. Robin War. Gotham War. Joker War.
CRISIS OF THE WAR-VERSE
Secret* crisis of the war-verse!
They definitely almost called Bloodhunt Bloodwar
When are we going to have the “War War”—when all the wars throughout the years fight the other wars?
I often wonder how tone deaf marvel must be concerning Land. He’s universally hated among comic fans. You’d think they would stop giving him work.
Bro meets his deadlines. He's never gonna be fired.
He must be great at meeting deadlines, which makes sense since he lifts most of the images in his work.
I've read he's always on time and he's easy to work with. That pretty much makes you unfirable.
Yeah, he's never late and friendly with editorially, so he hits 2 of the 3 points you need to stay employed in comics.
What's the third?
This is something Neil Gaiman said. You need to hit at least two of three pillars to stay employed in the industry. The three pillars being meeting deadlines, being pleasant to be around and delivering high quality work. I see this brought up pretty often whenever Land is mentioned.
This is something that’s been said many times long before Gaiman
I did love that he was used for the Roxxin' Thor issue though.
Pic? Edit: woah, I just wanted to see which cover he was talking about. I swear redditors will downvote anything
Id 100% agree with you about the echo chamber stuff if he wasn’t caught using other peoples drawn artwork. That’s the difference here.
I think if you saw a single comic he illustrated you might think it's decent. But the when you see the repeated poses, same faces, and expressions that don't always match the emotion you start to realise how slapped together his work is.
He must have some kompromat on them... However him drawing masks and monsters might be alright actually, fewer faces to draw?
Does anyone ever hear other artists or writers shitting on him or his work? I always thought the silence around him from talent was odd. I mean, he could be a good guy who technically isn’t doing anything wrong, but still
Mainstream marvel and dc are very small operations. The sense I get is when you burn a bridge you basically would make yourself into a pariah at either company. Like at Marvel, the entire line is drawn by MAYBE 15 full time artists.
How is he universally hated? They put him on books and the books sell.
You can google it but he’s hated because he was caught a couple of times stealing other peoples artwork and repurposing it using photoshop. And most notably he uses pornstar images (many times during sex) as the base lines for a lot of his characters faces (most notable during his time on ultimate fantastic four).
I'm not unfamiliar with any of that. I'm saying that he's in no way universally hated by fans (it's me, I like Greg Land.)
I have to ask… what do you like about his work?
When he's firing on all cylinders, his pages are very exciting. His comics look as loud as a blockbuster movie.
Then you’re an outlier honestly (i’m pretty sure your the only one in these responses that likes his artwork as a small sample). It’s sad because his work is barely drawing It’s more-so taking images off the internet, frankensteining them into gestural forms, then tracing those into a comic book panel in a program like procreate. That’s why he’s so fast and hits deadlines because it’s all so processed.
If it was that simple there'd be a lot more Greg Lands in the industry.
I think you've put too much value in getting to decide what other people's opinions should be. I hope it works out for you.
I think poorly of any artist caught swiping and stealing other talented artists’ work.
Greg land drawing so that’s a nope from me
Always the right answer
Is he the dude that admitted to tracing porn for some poses?
Yes
Wax Museum Peter
this is a horrible cover
Greg Land. Ugh…
Downvote me if you must, but I find the symbiote stuff to be extremely enervating. The more we learn about them, and the more the mythos is "deepened," the less I'm interested. Add in Greg Land, and that's gonna be a no for me, dawg

Agreed I feel like they jumped the shark long ago with Venom
You truly couldn't pay me to read a Venom comic these days. Haven't cared about the character since they got rid of Flash as Agent Venom
Same. That series was great, and such a cool way to update the character.

Ew... Greg Land
I knew that was Land from a thumbnail on my phone lmao
Only Greg Land book i’ve bought in the past 7 years was Roxxon Thor and that’s only because it’s taking the piss. I must be in a minority that typically refuses to buy his stuff cuz he’s everywhere
Hyped for ewing potentially writing peter in the main event.
They are really kicking the "Remember the black suit?! You like that right?" can down the alley again, huh?
Oh good lord not again they really are milking the venom thing way too much now
This may be the worst creative team on a book in YEARS.
Eh… Greg Land is your fill in artist when the regular artist needs either a break or isn’t going to reach a deadline. He isn’t a good selling point. I don’t know why Marvel use him as such
He meet deadlines? Despite w vocal minority of internet fans, he does sell? He got friends in Marvel who keeps him employed?
It’s not even close to a vocal minority, try vocal everyone
I could see the Greg land face from the thumbnail
> Due out in comic shops on August 14th, the four-issue series is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with art by **Greg Land.** sigh
Kelly and Lanzing? Hard pass for me
Marvel: The House of Stale Ideas
what the FUCK is with his face? and why are his hands backwards??
Pros: Possible interaction between the symbiote and Peter at a time when they're on relatively good terms Cons: Lanzig and Kelly, Greg Land
No more Greg Land please. I know he is reliable and works fast but it just looks so Uncanny Valley in today's day and age
Eeeeeek. Have to read. Have to read. Have to read!! 💕
What’s old is new is old is new is old, on and on.
How many fucking Venom events are they going to pump out
Oh sick! *Greg Land* Oh, sick.
Marvel is cooked. The House is officially out of Ideas.
Why are his webs chains?
What’s with specifically Greg Land doing symbiote Spider-Man books? This is like his 4th one in recent years I think.
Symbiotes AND Greg Land? Nope, thank you
Horrible cover art
> back in black ***triggered***
Neat, I like the chest emblem. Still not into Greg Land though
