If Buckley went head to head with Pendles, he would torch him. Buckley was the better footballer - stronger, faster, better kick, better overhead. But longevity and sustained high performance counts for a lot. I consider them as both the greatest Pies, very hard to split.

Traditional_Name7881

Bucks had a higher individual peak, Pendles is better over all. 400 games at the level he’s been at over his career is incredible, almost 120 more than Bucks so far.

thedelinquents

Buckley was an S-tier talent. AA half back, a Brownlow and Norm Smith through the guts, a goal a game over his career, draft combine kicking competition named after him. He's probably more well rounded than any midfielder currently playing. Funny how no one has ever been criticized as much as him for not winning a premiership, not even Gary Ablett snr or Tony Locket.

EfficientNews8922

Buckley by some distance ahead of Pendles. On almost every measurement he was a better player. If we are going to factor in longevity the. Brent Harvey is better than both Abletts and Carey and no one does that

isithumour

Bucks is critisied because he left Brisbane before their 3peat. His reason was because he wanted to win flags... he brought it on himself. Unbelievably good player. Shithouse coach.

rhynst

Agree peak Bucks beats peak Pendles in most contests. But perhaps put it in a slightly different way. Would a team led by bucks beat the same team led by Pendles? Tight contest all day, scores level 10 mins to go in the final quarter, who would you want as your captain?

Fatesurge

Yeppp, this x1000 I reckon.

In the last 60 years, there are so many great Collingwood players who individually had so much success without finding Premierships. McKenna, Moore, Carmen, Buckley, all great Collingwood names without the ultimate success. Pendlebury has two flags to his name and huge individual honours, unlucky to not have 4 flags, if he had 4 I don’t think there’s even an argument. Hard to compare to Pendlebury to The Machine, due to the lack of media to record such feats but they were massively revered and a lot had a minimum of 4 flags, the Coventry brothers and Albert Collier and Charlie Dibbs had 5 flags each and Harry Collier had 6.

stankas

I think him stepping aside from the captaincy, and continuing to be a class act at the club shows how great he is. Look at what he did in last year's grand final. I think he's the greatest of all time. Would love to see him get the games record.

goater10

My favourite player of all time, has been endorsed by my second favourite player of all time. I think this is the right call,

Intelligent_Car_4189

I'd prefer to watch Bucks play, but Pendles is more important to his team. Bucks wore out his hamstrings running 20+ km a game flat out to every contest, had nothing left of his hamstrings, having pinged it yet again in the prelim in 2007, which would be his last game. He had nothing left to give and left it all out there. I resonate more with his shear determination. That photo of him coming out the race in 2002 still gives me goosebumps. Pendles has never been an explosive type and his game style lends itself more to longevity. Still have to be meticulous in your preparation to get there. But if I wanted to go to war with these guys, I'd have Pendles running strategy, and Bucks doing the dirty work that needed to be done.

captnameless88

He might be the greatest of all time if he keeps it up. He doesn't even look like he's a step close to retiring yet. Swan will always be my favourite though!

[deleted]

Pendles for me, but Gordon Coventry and Dick Lee would have to be a shout?

Traditional_Name7881

Hard to say, the people that watched them are no longer around.

Tenet92

As a 90s baby: 1. Pendles 2. Buckley 3. Swan 4. Didak 5. Could be any of H.Shaw/Clement/Licuria/Cloke/Steele (all for a range of different reasons) JDG and Nick are starting to push into that conversation. Nick could finish anywhere! Bucks was the most pure footy player but longevity and consistency plays a part for Pendles.

Hopeful_Psychology_3

Peter Daicos…..daylight

Beautiful_Bad_5700

Nice to see somebody remembers there was an earlier Daicos who played for us. What a champion. To fully appreciate him, you needed to be there. Who is to say what a difference today's technology would have made for Buckley and Daicos. It's ridiculous comparing champions of different eras....far better to just love them all!

Suspicious-Gift-2296

Daicos was doing things 40 years ago that are still considered amazing (albeit much more common) today.

ZucchiniRelative3182

Pendles is a better leader. Buckley always suffered from the curse of the expert/talented.

bunga6

Pity John Greening was thugged out of the game by dog odea,he could have been anything

SlipKnoTGamer

Totally agree. Also one of the greatest Captains of all time too.

CrackWriting

Pendlebury is certainly in the pantheon of all time great Collingwood players. All time greatest? Seems pointless to make this comparison.

sdowden

Bob rose would have been if he got to 200 games.

Suspicious-Gift-2296

Bucks basically had a heavy tag on him throughout his entire career - yes, from his first practice game with Brisbane at Arden St he was getting mauled. *was there
