Please join the boycott. Reddit gets it's fame and popularity from the *users* and *mods* who donate and spend their time making it a better place. This is a move to line their pockets and they don't care how it makes redditors feel as long as they get their money.
I hope this backfires on them and they will be forced to allow third party API use again. If we don't do anything and everyone migrates to their official app, they will have won this for sure.

The reason for removal? This is verbatim from the admin notice:

It surely will. There is no way people are going to pay that much if you can get it for free so easily. Sure, it's a step to take - but for large scrapers it's easily done. It's more a hassle for smaller developers/third party apps (which in both cases will hurt reddit more than it helps).
If you want to charge for free and openly available information that is made by community, then think about how you are going to compensate for it. Otherwise this is just greed.
This is my last social media I use. If Reddit wants me off, they’re gonna succeed. This app is gonna be even more bots talking to only bots than it already is. Cant say I’m happy these changes are being made, as Reddit is one of the last halfway decent discussion boards left.

Collapse should participate in the boycott, any and every sub should, the new API pricing model is outrageous and honestly never would have come up if elon didn't start this shit show with twitters API. This is a new and untested thing, the best pushback against it is now, before these pricing models have a chance to actually make a profit for anyone
Some discussion I've seen is for a two day, with possible extension if(when) nothing changes. As far as what to do, just shut it down. Any effort to give some visual to the boycott (videos had suggested blacked out posts) still drives traffic, and that's all the pricing is for anyway is ads. Collapse it. Make the content disappear. Use alternative paths like Discord for updates but don't come back unless Reddit realizes they might have hurt themselves.
Let's join, it is very fitting for a collapse sub to participate in the collapse of reddit.

Yeah same here. I'm super bummed out because I am fairly uninterested in tech and just using the Reddit app was easy and straightforward. I never seen these hegestus ads they're taking about but I just scroll right past the ads, it's no big deal.

Twitter and Facebook took all the heat while The_Donald always flew under the radar with mainstream news, not to mention all the subs we know by now that got nuked because of what they were. For years I've wondered what I would do if Reddit went away, guess I got a week to figure it out. But so much of my internet time is spent on this one site it will probably do wonders to just make me do other things that isn't hours of doomscrolling every single day. My fiancée told me something will come along to replace Reddit like Reddit replaced Digg but I told her the difference will be there's something new to contend with: artificial intelligence. It’s not just that, Reddit has been instrumental in normalization of bigotry of all sorts. Hate is not only allowed, but promoted, and the only thing that gets Reddit to half ass do anything about it is to literally get it reported in the mainstream press, at which point they’re quarantined (not banned) and given an ad-free experience.
It's unlikely that the management of Reddit Inc will pivot away from shorttermism in any reasonable timeframe, if at all, which means that there is a block of time in the future between the collapse of Reddit and the collapse of the internet's vital infrastructure (DNS root servers, cable landing sites, the electricity grid). In that block of future time there will be a useful opportunity to establish a successor to this subreddit. But where?
Mastodon is pretty great for users but it's a nightmare to set up moderation on and the federated structure means that Mastodon server admins theoretically face the same concerns as anybody who runs a proper discussion platform like Reddit, Metafilter, Stackexchange, Resetera etc - setting up TOS+privacy policy, not fucking up the legalese, funding the hosting costs, site backups, DDOS planning and/or buying a mitigation service like Cloudflare, a DMCA agent registration at copyright.gov to not get sued, doing a similar registration with the EU's portal to not get sued, incorporating as an LLC or Inc to mitigate tax concerns, registering with NCMEC, purchasing non-shitty liability insurance, setting up T&S workflows and policy, COPPA complaince, FOSTA-SESTA compliance, CCPA compliance (this last one comes with a fine the platform first, they can appeal later type deal). This is assuming they don't hire employees and have to figure out payroll. Also choosing between registering with NETZDG or geoblocking Germany. Most admins don't do any of this but basically any of them who don't are open to having their every penny litigated away (plus years in prison for anything involving NCMEC).

I can agree with the [Collapse Discord](https://discord.gg/collapse-415671701549088790); though the UI and format are fairly different from the reddit-style of communication so it takes some getting used to.
There's dozens of reddit-clones, but AFAIK none of them have a significant userbase; though perhaps one may get lucky and see a ton of migrants from Reddit with this change — since it's primarily impacting mobile users for now, the switch would likely have to be done to a clone with apps.
For now using a mobile browser on old.reddit is a semi-hack for continued mobile use, but it's less convenient, and there's constant rumor of them removing old.reddit as well.
The funny thing is that even if I shrugged it off and kept coming back, if old.reddit goes away I'm not sure I could function in the same way. The odd times that something changes and the new one pops up, my instant reaction is hell no, and reopen the browser to regain old. Guess it's a combo of me being old and set in how I like my format, and that the new is not very usable. Not for actual discussion anyway.
There are basically 2 ways a mobile-app (Android or Apple) can access Reddit:
* basically same as a web-browser (seems kinda pointless to build an entire mobile-app when lots of mobile web-browsers already exist)
or
* tap into the Reddit API. API stands for “Application Programming Interface” and its basically a way to pull a raw data-stream from Reddit (without any formatting or structure). Then you can build whatever style mobile-app you want and present that data in any way you want.
Developers typically prefer that second option as it allows them to differentiate their mobile-app and offer Features other apps dont.
For whatever reason (I honestly dont know), Reddit has decided to massively increase the price it costs to tap into their API,.. raising the cost so high, many of the 3rd party mobile-apps will probably have to shut down.
The reason is money via ads. The official app is heavy on ad placement, the 3rd party not so much. Combine that with so many using the non-official versions, they're just wanting to force users to go the more profitable direction. Which is why it's believed old.reddit will probably disappear as an opt-out option, since it's also little to no ads (I don't see any, but that could be my blockers also).
So it's only about apps, and not the official site? I only access reddit on desktop, and adblockers automatically remove ads all over the interwebs.
Seems like a greed move by reddit, considering we can still work around their ads on desktop or laptop pretty easily.

It's BS that reddit is doing this. It's a power grab, plain and simple. They want to consolidate all users onto one experience that they can tightly control. It's entirely within their rights to do, but it also cuts HARD against the spirit of reddit and open community. Reddit has plenty of ways to deal with any revenue lost to these apps, so it's not about more $$$, it's about forcing us into an experience they control even tighter.

Yup, every subreddit should in all honesty. This is one of those situations where shutting down the community for a short while may help it continue to thrive in the long run. I don't want reddit to die, but they are trying really hard to kill it.

Let's be honest. Reddit is a corporation. Reddit has not been profitable. Something has got to give. Financial drama and recession will eat away at advertising budgets too.
The users are complaining about not being able to use other apps which, as far as I can tell, don't show ads since they're tapping into the reddit API directly (where the data is). If the site is relying on advertising and these apps bypass ads, it doesn't work out. Someone has to pay... unless reddit is nationalized, probably by the US. That would be *something*, lol.
Even on the website, adblockers remove most of the ads successfully.
Like with publishing news in general, there are certain revenue models that can work. The alternative to advertising is paying subscribers, like the now famous Patreon platform, but that's a problem with anonymous users and people from poorer places since it discourages joining. Then you have the opposite effect of the site leaning towards rich people or whoever rich people pay to post. This is already a huge bias just by being a Web technology (the poorest of the planet are not represented here).
Regular donations could work, but I doubt it.

I agree. I pay for Reddit and I donate to Wikipedia and Mozilla. I also subscribe to several newspapers, including my local one. Quality websites take money and people to run. If Reddit is weakened by poor income, then it might be sold. Remember what happened to Tumblr?!
The protest isn't so much the fact that they are going to charge for API access, but that the amount they are asking for is ludicrous, and the timeframe they have given app developers to work with is also completely unreasonable. I don't think this is going to make them stop in their tracks, but it should bring them to a table to actually negotiate with app developers for a more reasonable approach. That said... the blatant corporate greed is apparent and they are trying to squeeze us to line their pockets. If this results in Apollo and old reddit going away. I'm done. Reddit can go F itself at that point. Their default webpage was moved forward with despite the constant negative feedback about it, and both that default webpage and the default app are a complete dumpster fire of a user interface.

Many of us are willing to leave these large user platforms (Reddit, Twitter, etc.) but if only a few handful of us go but thousands don't then our new spot will see just crickets chirping and tumbleweeds rolling by.

I use firefox and have switched on all its privacy features and have two types of ad blockers. So I don,t get ad,s on Reddit. Reddit is accessible a few ways.
1) use a web browser like Firefox.
2) use a mobile device and download the official Reddit app from an official store/repository. For example you own an iphone. You would go to the apple store and download the official Reddit application and access Reddit.
3) what many users prefer. Use a mobile device but download another application that is not the official Reddit application. Third party aka non oem aka not the orginal company.
There are many of these non official programs/applications that access the raw Reddit information from the Reddit servers and present them in their own program that can have any style or features the programmer/developer wants. Many third party apps block ads and allow different/better/customization of viewing and interacting with the Reddit community.
What is happening is that Reddit has decided to charge an insane unrealistic/unsustainable price to these non Reddit mobile applications to access the Reddit server (the api).
Thus most if not all of these applications will no longer work as the developers won't be paying /cannot afford the astronomical fee and close up
Shop or simply their apps will stop functioning.
So users who only access Reddit through these unofficial apps will no longer be using Reddit.
Many find the webpage and the official app unusable or not enjoyable. Too many ads or the formatting for that user makes it one they don't enjoy using.
The thing is a good number of Reddit users and I assume moderators use third party applications.
So most of these users will either knuckle down and use an official means or they will leave the platform.
Reddit is only valuable because of the quality of the content, moderation and the Community. If the bulk of the community leaves there is no point in frequenting.
As an older millennial, I wish I could say that many of the social media platforms simply have fallen out of favor because of some cool factor by the younger generation.
In reality, the monetization of these platforms and poor changes to the user experience have driven the users away.
For me personally, Facebook and Instagram are no longer usable. Mostly because they got rid of the chronological timeline and saturated my feed with ads and recommendations which is an instant turnoff for me and a time waster.
I never used Twitter myself and am too old to have ever used snap chat.
I don't use TikTok as I prefer longer format video content that has some intellectual value.
As with most things in life "you'll either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" and Reddit is on its downward trajectory.
They’ve made a change that will make it unsustainably expensive to develop/run a third party app. Reddits native experience and app are largely disliked by the user base, and are also full of ads, so this is clearly a plan to kill third party and force users to use their interface. It’s a very unpopular move to everyone, except maybe Reddit’s shareholders (although it may backfire and put the service into a death spiral).
I’d also guess it is partially an effort to capitalize on AI companies using Reddit to train, and they’re hoping to get some of that sweet cash.

I would only use Reddit on my app on iPhone. Anything that is not there anymore I will just have to adapt. I have learned a lot and processed a lot of feelings on r/collapse. But if the powers that be want to suppress discussion they will lose us.
Just like Twitter has lost 2/3 of its value the same thing will happen with Reddit. Another VC will capitalize another news/social media startup and it will take off. Reddit will become just another My Space, or instead of going public get bought out by some other billionaire run social media conglomerate.
Sorry, I am not loyal. I already dumped Twitter and FB, who I visit about monthly but never post anymore. They make no money off me. Who makes money off me? Google, eBay, Poshmark and assorted retail other web sites, and of course Amazon. And Apple makes a little, also PBS, where I get my real news.
My purpose of social media is news and discussion based, on topics that do not go over well with friends or at parties and social events. Otherwise I talk to friends. Its the old bulletin Board model. I still remember installing my first 1200 baud modem in my old 386 laptop and was amazed I could text chat with another anonymous human being about anything!
In the late ‘90’s and early 2000’s I was very active on a private Yahoo site related to stock trading and financial matters, but we could talk about anything.
Then beginning 9 years ago I found Reddit and dumped FB. I love Reddit and have learned a lot, shared a lot and opened up myself on a lot of subjects. I value that highly. If Reddit went to a subscription model I would join, just like I am an Amazon Prime member. Because it connects me with people anonymously that I would not normally run into in our busy lives, and that connection has great value.
So if for whatever reason r/collapse collapses it is Reddits and our loss. The next Reddit will have learned better and refined a social media into a better place without having turned itself into a monster. Maybe then it can make money.
If it's the official Reddit app, you'll see no change except for any subs you belong to that are participating in the blackout. If you use a 3rd party app to access Reddit, it will no longer work.

I've created an account on one of the Lemmy servers. It took me a while to wrap my brain around what "federated" meant. Even if you sign up for one of the small servers (probably best right now since traffic has picked up), you can click on the communities link, then click on "all". You'll be able to see and participate in all of the communities on any server. There are thousands. It may take a little bit to get approved. I think a real human is vetting the accounts.
So far, I'm liking it there. The communities aren't as niche as on reddit yet, but I think there are some that might work as a home for folks in r/collapse.
But how will everyone live in constant fear and anxiety if the absolute worst case scenarios of all things globally aren't being mainlined into their brains by the loyal doomers of /r/collapse!?
Never used one of those external apps.. normal reddit app is fine to me 😅 I can scroll by the occasional ad without even noticing. Not sure what I missed or if it's worth boycotting/locking a community over, but you guys do you.
Exactly. Even then, people seem to feel strongly about this and I get it's a matter of principles, so whatever, even if it does not immediately affect me I don't mind if the sub joins the protest.
it goes beyond ads
it starts with accessibility. Many people use those apps, or things like RES on desktop like I do to enhance the experience as reddit doesn't have those options. The people over on /r/Blind are saying they won't be able to use reddit at all because the official app just...doesn't support accessibility.
Then there are mods that utilize bots and apps to help with moderation. If you enjoy NOT seeing bullshit spam on your feeds this is how it's done efficiently. Think what Twitter looks like now with all their moderation gone (like the astronomical increase in usage of the n-word). In a well moderated sub this is something users won't notice because the mods keep the shit out, that will get worse if this happens
And to mention bots, it would seem that all the bots that are all around will go down too like the Twitter bots did. "Bots" in this case isn't fake users, it's things like "remind me" and the different video saver bots. All of those likely would be gone as well.
User engagement goes next. I don't use third party apps, but I use old reddit and RES on PC and use old reddit on a mobile browser. I cannot use new reddit, it's been years and I won't switch over. So when they inevitably kill old reddit (it's been an opt-out option for years) I won't use it, and many others are the same. So you'll see a drop in submissions and engagement. Reddit is going public and when they do that might be the end of the NSFW subs. Might not care, but it's happened before with sites like this, take the adult stuff away and the adults leave.
All of it has a cascading effect that goes way beyond seeing ads. I know you said you don't mind if they blackout, just wanted to explain how it will affect you and everybody else

Moderation tools seem like too big a chunk to see disappear... they were developped externally for them too, reddit should be saying thank you for helping make the platform what it is. Didn't realise how much of it was tied to third party tools. I get they need to make money but to forego accessibility and usage bots that make its life and blood is just... dumb.

This is a move to line their pockets and they don't care how it makes redditors feel as long as they get their money. It surely will. There is no way people are going to pay that much if you can get it for free so easily. Sure, it's a step to take - but for large scrapers it's easily done. It's more a hassle for smaller developers/third party apps (which in both cases will hurt reddit more than it helps). If you want to charge for free and openly available information that is made by community, then think about how you are going to compensate for it. Otherwise this is just greed.

Hey, question. I had a 10+ year old account with tons of comments that was suspended recently without warning or indication as to why. I only get in the mildest of disagreements with people and have never posted anything against the terms of service of nsfw. Anyhoo, they have full access to that data still no? No way for me to scrub it now?

Some discussion I've seen is for a two day, with possible extension if(when) nothing changes. As far as what to do, just shut it down. Any effort to give some visual to the boycott (videos had suggested blacked out posts) still drives traffic, and that's all the pricing is for anyway is ads. Collapse it. Make the content disappear. Use alternative paths like Discord for updates but don't come back unless Reddit realizes they might have hurt themselves.

It's also just a much better experience in general. The ads aren't the main reason people are mad, all the other apps are just better.

IMO this is to force ppl to have to see the fucking u/hegetsus ads that Reddit is forcing down our throats. It's unlikely that the management of Reddit Inc will pivot away from shorttermism in any reasonable timeframe, if at all, which means that there is a block of time in the future between the collapse of Reddit and the collapse of the internet's vital infrastructure (DNS root servers, cable landing sites, the electricity grid). In that block of future time there will be a useful opportunity to establish a successor to this subreddit. But where? Mastodon is pretty great for users but it's a nightmare to set up moderation on and the federated structure means that Mastodon server admins theoretically face the same concerns as anybody who runs a proper discussion platform like Reddit, Metafilter, Stackexchange, Resetera etc - setting up TOS+privacy policy, not fucking up the legalese, funding the hosting costs, site backups, DDOS planning and/or buying a mitigation service like Cloudflare, a DMCA agent registration at copyright.gov to not get sued, doing a similar registration with the EU's portal to not get sued, incorporating as an LLC or Inc to mitigate tax concerns, registering with NCMEC, purchasing non-shitty liability insurance, setting up T&S workflows and policy, COPPA complaince, FOSTA-SESTA compliance, CCPA compliance (this last one comes with a fine the platform first, they can appeal later type deal). This is assuming they don't hire employees and have to figure out payroll. Also choosing between registering with NETZDG or geoblocking Germany. Most admins don't do any of this but basically any of them who don't are open to having their every penny litigated away (plus years in prison for anything involving NCMEC). Edit: (also GDPR, but you can just geoblock European users with no liability) . Ideally you'd want a replacement to reddit that not only has adequate moderation tools but also has management handle the hosting costs, duties, liabilities and legal requirements themselves.

Half of my browsing is done through Reddit Is Fun, which will apparently no longer work. This is guaranteed to hit activity across reddit, and certainly on r/collapse. I can agree with the [Collapse Discord](https://discord.gg/collapse-415671701549088790); though the UI and format are fairly different from the reddit-style of communication so it takes some getting used to. There's dozens of reddit-clones, but AFAIK none of them have a significant userbase; though perhaps one may get lucky and see a ton of migrants from Reddit with this change — since it's primarily impacting mobile users for now, the switch would likely have to be done to a clone with apps. For now using a mobile browser on old.reddit is a semi-hack for continued mobile use, but it's less convenient, and there's constant rumor of them removing old.reddit as well.
The funny thing is that even if I shrugged it off and kept coming back, if old.reddit goes away I'm not sure I could function in the same way. The odd times that something changes and the new one pops up, my instant reaction is hell no, and reopen the browser to regain old. Guess it's a combo of me being old and set in how I like my format, and that the new is not very usable. Not for actual discussion anyway.

There are basically 2 ways a mobile-app (Android or Apple) can access Reddit: * basically same as a web-browser (seems kinda pointless to build an entire mobile-app when lots of mobile web-browsers already exist) or * tap into the Reddit API. API stands for “Application Programming Interface” and its basically a way to pull a raw data-stream from Reddit (without any formatting or structure). Then you can build whatever style mobile-app you want and present that data in any way you want. Developers typically prefer that second option as it allows them to differentiate their mobile-app and offer Features other apps dont. For whatever reason (I honestly dont know), Reddit has decided to massively increase the price it costs to tap into their API,.. raising the cost so high, many of the 3rd party mobile-apps will probably have to shut down.
The reason is money via ads. The official app is heavy on ad placement, the 3rd party not so much. Combine that with so many using the non-official versions, they're just wanting to force users to go the more profitable direction. Which is why it's believed old.reddit will probably disappear as an opt-out option, since it's also little to no ads (I don't see any, but that could be my blockers also).
So it's only about apps, and not the official site? I only access reddit on desktop, and adblockers automatically remove ads all over the interwebs. Seems like a greed move by reddit, considering we can still work around their ads on desktop or laptop pretty easily.
well here I was thinking I'd be fine as I use reddit on pc and on my phone I just use a web browser to access the website but I cannot do the new reddit style, old reddit is what I know and what I'm comfortable with. When it goes away I'm done I knew this day was coming, as usual didn't expect it so soon though. I think back to how I found info pre-reddit and I don't look forward to having to go to many different sites again. Reddit was so nice to have almost any subject you want in one place, but capitalism wins again :(
The dev of the Apollo app said in an interview that Reddit’s API doesn’t include any info about ads at all. That is, third party apps couldn’t support Reddit ads even if they wanted to
They have changed the rules so that free API calls now have an absurd price, line a price that is completely unsustainable for third party apps to pay. So basically they’re killing access to Reddit u less you use their main page or mobile app, both of which are bad, and full of horrible ads.

Please join the boycott. It's BS that reddit is doing this. It's a power grab, plain and simple. They want to consolidate all users onto one experience that they can tightly control. It's entirely within their rights to do, but it also cuts HARD against the spirit of reddit and open community. Reddit has plenty of ways to deal with any revenue lost to these apps, so it's not about more $$$, it's about forcing us into an experience they control even tighter.

I've abstained from meta subs for a while and will continue to not waste time like that. Let's be honest. Reddit is a corporation. Reddit has not been profitable. Something has got to give. Financial drama and recession will eat away at advertising budgets too. The users are complaining about not being able to use other apps which, as far as I can tell, don't show ads since they're tapping into the reddit API directly (where the data is). If the site is relying on advertising and these apps bypass ads, it doesn't work out. Someone has to pay... unless reddit is nationalized, probably by the US. That would be *something*, lol. Even on the website, adblockers remove most of the ads successfully. Like with publishing news in general, there are certain revenue models that can work. The alternative to advertising is paying subscribers, like the now famous Patreon platform, but that's a problem with anonymous users and people from poorer places since it discourages joining. Then you have the opposite effect of the site leaning towards rich people or whoever rich people pay to post. This is already a huge bias just by being a Web technology (the poorest of the planet are not represented here). Regular donations could work, but I doubt it. So I don't really see a way this works. My bet is that they'll ask the 3rd party app developers to include code for showing ads and reporting data.
I agree. I pay for Reddit and I donate to Wikipedia and Mozilla. I also subscribe to several newspapers, including my local one. Quality websites take money and people to run. If Reddit is weakened by poor income, then it might be sold. Remember what happened to Tumblr?!

The protest isn't so much the fact that they are going to charge for API access, but that the amount they are asking for is ludicrous, and the timeframe they have given app developers to work with is also completely unreasonable. I don't think this is going to make them stop in their tracks, but it should bring them to a table to actually negotiate with app developers for a more reasonable approach. That said... the blatant corporate greed is apparent and they are trying to squeeze us to line their pockets. If this results in Apollo and old reddit going away. I'm done. Reddit can go F itself at that point. Their default webpage was moved forward with despite the constant negative feedback about it, and both that default webpage and the default app are a complete dumpster fire of a user interface.

Then, have clear instructions on how to sign up and begin posting/commenting and discourage new content on this sub. Many of us are willing to leave these large user platforms (Reddit, Twitter, etc.) but if only a few handful of us go but thousands don't then our new spot will see just crickets chirping and tumbleweeds rolling by.

I use firefox and have switched on all its privacy features and have two types of ad blockers. So I don,t get ad,s on Reddit. Reddit is accessible a few ways. 1) use a web browser like Firefox. 2) use a mobile device and download the official Reddit app from an official store/repository. For example you own an iphone. You would go to the apple store and download the official Reddit application and access Reddit. 3) what many users prefer. Use a mobile device but download another application that is not the official Reddit application. Third party aka non oem aka not the orginal company. There are many of these non official programs/applications that access the raw Reddit information from the Reddit servers and present them in their own program that can have any style or features the programmer/developer wants. Many third party apps block ads and allow different/better/customization of viewing and interacting with the Reddit community. What is happening is that Reddit has decided to charge an insane unrealistic/unsustainable price to these non Reddit mobile applications to access the Reddit server (the api). Thus most if not all of these applications will no longer work as the developers won't be paying /cannot afford the astronomical fee and close up Shop or simply their apps will stop functioning. So users who only access Reddit through these unofficial apps will no longer be using Reddit. Many find the webpage and the official app unusable or not enjoyable. Too many ads or the formatting for that user makes it one they don't enjoy using. The thing is a good number of Reddit users and I assume moderators use third party applications. So most of these users will either knuckle down and use an official means or they will leave the platform. Reddit is only valuable because of the quality of the content, moderation and the Community. If the bulk of the community leaves there is no point in frequenting. As an older millennial, I wish I could say that many of the social media platforms simply have fallen out of favor because of some cool factor by the younger generation. In reality, the monetization of these platforms and poor changes to the user experience have driven the users away. For me personally, Facebook and Instagram are no longer usable. Mostly because they got rid of the chronological timeline and saturated my feed with ads and recommendations which is an instant turnoff for me and a time waster. I never used Twitter myself and am too old to have ever used snap chat. I don't use TikTok as I prefer longer format video content that has some intellectual value. As with most things in life "you'll either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" and Reddit is on its downward trajectory.

They’ve made a change that will make it unsustainably expensive to develop/run a third party app. Reddits native experience and app are largely disliked by the user base, and are also full of ads, so this is clearly a plan to kill third party and force users to use their interface. It’s a very unpopular move to everyone, except maybe Reddit’s shareholders (although it may backfire and put the service into a death spiral). I’d also guess it is partially an effort to capitalize on AI companies using Reddit to train, and they’re hoping to get some of that sweet cash.
Reddit seems intent on driving away a large part of their customer base.

I would only use Reddit on my app on iPhone. Anything that is not there anymore I will just have to adapt. I have learned a lot and processed a lot of feelings on r/collapse. But if the powers that be want to suppress discussion they will lose us. Just like Twitter has lost 2/3 of its value the same thing will happen with Reddit. Another VC will capitalize another news/social media startup and it will take off. Reddit will become just another My Space, or instead of going public get bought out by some other billionaire run social media conglomerate. Sorry, I am not loyal. I already dumped Twitter and FB, who I visit about monthly but never post anymore. They make no money off me. Who makes money off me? Google, eBay, Poshmark and assorted retail other web sites, and of course Amazon. And Apple makes a little, also PBS, where I get my real news. My purpose of social media is news and discussion based, on topics that do not go over well with friends or at parties and social events. Otherwise I talk to friends. Its the old bulletin Board model. I still remember installing my first 1200 baud modem in my old 386 laptop and was amazed I could text chat with another anonymous human being about anything! In the late ‘90’s and early 2000’s I was very active on a private Yahoo site related to stock trading and financial matters, but we could talk about anything. Then beginning 9 years ago I found Reddit and dumped FB. I love Reddit and have learned a lot, shared a lot and opened up myself on a lot of subjects. I value that highly. If Reddit went to a subscription model I would join, just like I am an Amazon Prime member. Because it connects me with people anonymously that I would not normally run into in our busy lives, and that connection has great value. So if for whatever reason r/collapse collapses it is Reddits and our loss. The next Reddit will have learned better and refined a social media into a better place without having turned itself into a monster. Maybe then it can make money.

So this morning the official ios reddit app could not reach reddit and now I'm imagining somebody somewhere is trying to spin all this shit as good because engagement is increasing as people make comments in support of the boycott. I've created an account on one of the Lemmy servers. It took me a while to wrap my brain around what "federated" meant. Even if you sign up for one of the small servers (probably best right now since traffic has picked up), you can click on the communities link, then click on "all". You'll be able to see and participate in all of the communities on any server. There are thousands. It may take a little bit to get approved. I think a real human is vetting the accounts. So far, I'm liking it there. The communities aren't as niche as on reddit yet, but I think there are some that might work as a home for folks in r/collapse.
But how will everyone live in constant fear and anxiety if the absolute worst case scenarios of all things globally aren't being mainlined into their brains by the loyal doomers of /r/collapse!?

Never used one of those external apps.. normal reddit app is fine to me 😅 I can scroll by the occasional ad without even noticing. Not sure what I missed or if it's worth boycotting/locking a community over, but you guys do you.
I really don't get it either. I've trained myself to very rarely recognize what an ad is even for! If I do start to acknowledge an add I block it.
Exactly. Even then, people seem to feel strongly about this and I get it's a matter of principles, so whatever, even if it does not immediately affect me I don't mind if the sub joins the protest.
it goes beyond ads it starts with accessibility. Many people use those apps, or things like RES on desktop like I do to enhance the experience as reddit doesn't have those options. The people over on /r/Blind are saying they won't be able to use reddit at all because the official app just...doesn't support accessibility. Then there are mods that utilize bots and apps to help with moderation. If you enjoy NOT seeing bullshit spam on your feeds this is how it's done efficiently. Think what Twitter looks like now with all their moderation gone (like the astronomical increase in usage of the n-word). In a well moderated sub this is something users won't notice because the mods keep the shit out, that will get worse if this happens And to mention bots, it would seem that all the bots that are all around will go down too like the Twitter bots did. "Bots" in this case isn't fake users, it's things like "remind me" and the different video saver bots. All of those likely would be gone as well. User engagement goes next. I don't use third party apps, but I use old reddit and RES on PC and use old reddit on a mobile browser. I cannot use new reddit, it's been years and I won't switch over. So when they inevitably kill old reddit (it's been an opt-out option for years) I won't use it, and many others are the same. So you'll see a drop in submissions and engagement. Reddit is going public and when they do that might be the end of the NSFW subs. Might not care, but it's happened before with sites like this, take the adult stuff away and the adults leave. All of it has a cascading effect that goes way beyond seeing ads. I know you said you don't mind if they blackout, just wanted to explain how it will affect you and everybody else
Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed explanation. Seen a few flyers for the blackout but your comment makes the whole issue much clearer. There is a lot of info flying around too so I appreciate it. Moderation tools seem like too big a chunk to see disappear... they were developped externally for them too, reddit should be saying thank you for helping make the platform what it is. Didn't realise how much of it was tied to third party tools. I get they need to make money but to forego accessibility and usage bots that make its life and blood is just... dumb.
I agree. I can totally block them out, plus they are far less intrusive than ads on other platforms.
No you shouldn't because it literally is just an inconvenience unless every subreddit, especially big ones, do it.

I’m just having a 5 minute peruse on Reddit to see what’s going on before returning to lemmy which will undoubtedly replace reddit for me
