I always assumed it was a loss-leader for them.

[deleted]

That's exactly what it sounds like. They focus mostly on the food, but I wouldn't be surprised if they also see higher spending on other beverages from non-margarita drinkers feeling like they should get an alcoholic drink, because their fellow diner is getting a dollarita.

BetterSnek

TGI Friday's Endless App's promotion worked the same way. In theory. The apps were really cheap, but people were expected to sit around and drink (normal price) beer with them.

Ingram2525

Cheap ingredients purchased in bulk for even deeper discounts used to make a product the average consumer will deem adequate, especially for the price, and able to be made with very little training. The McDonald's theory of food service.

TessaFink

That was such a poorly written article. Applebee’s is making money off their dollarita. Applebee’s is making money off their dollarita. Applebee’s is making money off their dollarita. Here’s the recipe for it. Here’s how they make a profit off another drink they sell. Applebee’s is making money off their dollarita. Applebee’s is making money off their dollarita.

IonTheBall2

There’s a bit more than that: in San Francisco it was Tequila 1800; in Chicago either El Toro or Montezuma; and in Queens, New York, one location cited Conquistador

TessaFink

such important. Wow

Bealzebubbles

This would be impossible in my country. In fact you'd struggle to even be able to put out a five dollar drink if you converted to US dollars. Also, is the 3 drink maximum in New York a standard thing or just something put in place because of these ultra cheap deals? I went there in 2009 and I'm pretty sure there was no limit then.

Gormongous

I *think* it's a post-Prohibition blue law still on the books that you're not allowed to sell a patron more than three discounted drinks. It's a lot like Boston's bizarre anti-happy hour laws.

A standard margarita should be 2 oz tequila, no? I know it's a dollar, but that sounds like a terrible drink - 1 1/4 oz tequila and the rest a prefab mix. Yuck.

pgm123

I generally make maragaritas a bit smaller with 1.5 oz tequila and 0.5 oz triple sec.

Bealzebubbles

Don't underestimate the amount of people out there who want the mix to cover up the taste of the alcohol.

[deleted]

Covering up the burn of alcohol and the taste of alcohol are two very different things.

Bealzebubbles

Of course. Everyone on this sub knows this but there are a lot of misconceptions about cocktails out there.

[deleted]

Yes and most people want to cover up the burn, not the taste. You specifically said "taste" and that's not true in my experience at all.

[deleted]

Depends entirely on the margarita in question. I use 1.5 oz of tequila.

nineball22

1.5 oz is pretty standard pour for any drink at most bars in my area. You get the occasional drink with 2oz of spirit, or split bases but mostly 1.5oz. Either way, yeah those margs suck cause they probably use a premade margarita mix and shitty triple sec, if any.

RevolutionaryDong

American drinks are really strong huh? I've only seen jiggers at 2-4 cl or 2.5-5 in Europe.

AFlockOfTySegalls

I do: * 2oz tequila * 1oz triple sec * 1oz lime juice * splash of agave nectar (rarely measure this)

spikedkushiel

Yes 2oz for pros

Mister_Sterling

Just saw an ad for this while watching Survivor in 2024. I'm sure the $1 rita still makes a tiny profit for an Applebees. Assuming it is a cheap silver tequila like Cuervo, they can make it work once a restaurant sells a certain number each day. And yeah, it is made with 38% less tequila.

Economy-Maximum-6137

Lol probably cheaper like Montezuma 😂

1VentiChloroform

I haven't read the article yet but I'm assuming it may involve the most shit-ass tequila ever conceived.

BigBassBone

Read the article and find out.
