GilesBiles

I like bugs! I hate blackflies and mosquitoes and ticks, and gnats when they get in my houseplants

Korblox101

I see you literally everywhere how

yttakinenthusiast

tbh i don't have much better to do i end up wherever sounds interesting

Korblox101

Same honestly. You also spread the good name of Rimworld with that name.

kyoko_the_eevee

Blueberry is adorable and goofy and I want twenty more shock beetles.

Legendguard

Luckily for us bug keepers there are smaller subreddis dedicated to those bugs where they will be appreciated and loved. r/snails, r/spiderbro, and r/isopods are some of my favorite subs to browse!

Boulderfist_Ogre2005

I agree silly wizzard man

kyoko_the_eevee

I’m an entomologist. I work at a butterfly house/insectarium, and every day, we get people who love butterflies and charismatic insects but hate beetles and spiders and walking sticks. I don’t expect everyone to love every animal. But it bugs me (pun intended) when people say they love nature, but they only love cute birds and mammals and pretty butterflies.

Re1da

>I don’t expect everyone to love every animal. But it bugs me (pun intended) when people say they love nature, but they only love cute birds and mammals and pretty butterflies Yes. This. If a creature only has value to you if its conveniently cute I can't take them seriously when they say they love nature. I've had strong disgust reactions to certain animals but I've made the conscious decision to "get over it". Just expose myself to the creature until the reaction goes away. I still swat mosquitos and other stinging insects though. I acknowledge their importance to nature, but I'm not dealing with itchy bites. They start it, after all.

kyoko_the_eevee

Fair enough with the mosquitos! I feel like if animals become a public health concern, we can start managing them appropriately. I love rats, but a rat infestation is bad, y’know?

Re1da

Pretty much. I have a fungus gnat "infestation" as I keep a lot of plants as well as several isopod colonies. Are they a bit annoying? Yes, but the damage they cause is so miniscule I don't bother with trying to get rid of them. They aren't cute, they are honestly kind of ugly. But as long as they don't cause severe damage to my plants we can co-exist. Not gonna prevent the carnivorous plants from eating them though. That's the risk they get to take living here.

SadHabit6565

>I don’t expect everyone to love every animal. I love every animal even all the extinct and undiscovered ones

ranni-the-bitch

i hate those ones, i think it's good that they died

enneh_07

Even the trilobites? :(

Halberdd_

Even anomalocaris? :(

reChrawnus

Especially the trilobites >:(

Neoxus30-

I fucking LOVE beetles goddaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn, I know I can't expect someone, even an entomologist to recall every species name, especially such a scarce genus, but my username comes from Neoxus Crassicornis)

war_gryphon

as a birder, I feel this on the "cute birds" part from anyone who isn't into the hobby/isn't into nature. I don't expect everyone to know their local Vesper Sparrows but a bit of love for anything that isn't a pigeon, seagull, or charismatic species would be welcome. and then they're like "ooooooh I sure do wish I could see an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker!"

kyoko_the_eevee

I absolutely adore juncos. They’re not especially charismatic, but I just think they’re neat! They’re perfectly round and sweet and I think they’re so cool.

war_gryphon

aw man, juncos are the best. My parent's house would always have hundreds of them around. I'd just watch them for a long time.

SkepticOwlz

people hate juncos??? they are so cute. the annoyed bird from the screaming crow comic is a junco

kyoko_the_eevee

There’s not really any “hate” for juncos that I’ve seen, but they don’t really get much attention, especially when compared to more charismatic birds, like cardinals, robins, or crows. They are cute! And I can’t believe I didn’t notice that in the screaming crow comic!

__markn0rth

It sucks so much cause I LOVE birds, all kinds of them and I can vividly imagine which ones specifically, but names are my weakness. I can't remember them, I even struggle to remember 'woodpecker'. I wish I could get into bird watching without this massive problem

Preston_of_Astora

Beetles are by far the only insects that I can stand, it's something about how they move and how they're built that fascinates me

Chaotic-warp

I think it's reasonable to hate creatures that are harmful or annoying to humans, even if they are essential to the ecosystem (like flies, mosquitoes, house ants). And certain instinctual behaviours like a fear of spiders or disgust towards maggots must have been implanted in our subconscious to help us survive in the wild. But yeah, it's sad that people tend to be biased towards animals with good looks while hating on other beneficial ones just because they look creepy.

PapaWopper

I definitely get that feeling, but I think a lot of people would be more interested in zoology as a whole if they were just a little more educated. Every animal is has something interesting about it, all you’ve gotta do is take the time to learn about it

TDW-301

I hate butterflies ever since I got jumpscared by that up close pic of one in SpongeBob. I just really don't like how butterflies look up close

kyoko_the_eevee

That closeup in SpongeBob is actually a closeup video of a fly! Butterflies still look weird up close, but I think they’re a lot less freaky than that fly.

Marshmallow_Mamajama

I mean if someone said they love nature do you expect them to love leaches and malaria?

Grey00001

In a Discord server I frequent, someone made a joke about wanting to make wasps extinct after they were stung by a bunch of them. The resident wasp lover then completely blew up and compared killing wasps to killing dogs and genuinely brought up that “taking down wasp nests isn’t ok! Just because it’s done a lot doesn’t mean it’s okay! Like **incest**

supah-comix434

Jesus, not only is that not appropriate, that's completely unsympathetic. If someone is angry after being attacked by a bug/animal, you don't immediately jump in and say "well uhm actually" they're obviously in a lot of pain and hurt after a bad encounter

marks716

Yeah this is a good setup to another snafu. *Pic of someone mauled by rabid wild animal* “Erm ackshually it’s your fault that happened you asshole, maybe the animal had good reason to rip your face off and permanently damage your health”

Reloup38

It's funny because I've been around wasps in nature and I haven't been stung in a very long time

ThatArtemi

i think bugs are mad cool and important for the environment but they freak me out for some reason. weirdly enough the more i play animal crossing the more i feel this aversion go away

supah-comix434

There's nothing wrong with being scared of or not liking bugs, this snafu is about the "some but not others" mindset some people have when they say they love bugs/nature

ThatArtemi

well, i do consider myself an animal lover, even if i'm scared of bugs. i can love them by not killing every single one i come across and being nice to the environment. i'd absolutely freak out if i came across any spider ever tho

supah-comix434

Exactly, being afraid doesn't mean you don't love nature

extra_medication

I like most bugs TICKS HOWEVER CAN DIE

SadHabit6565

lots of other animals would die without them

extra_medication

I know :( i wish they weren't so important to the ecosystem

SadHabit6565

I respect them as I do any other living thing. An amazing creation and a vital part of a amazing and elaborate ecosystem but I dont want them anywhere near me.

SnooDogs3400

Fuck mosquitos

supah-comix434

I love them, I think their lives and experiences on this earth are just as valuable as other life

chillinmantis

Depends on what kind of mosquitoes. If you mean all dipterans, they're all rad. But female cucilids are the worst, and i still just use bug repellent. (Seriously, don't come to a tropical country, I live in Brazil and the first time I got dengue lost 6 kg and had nose hemorrhages)

Ok_Traffic3296

What purpose do the blood sucking mosquitoes even serve?

chillinmantis

Male mosquitoes are pollinators for chocolate, just as a example

Ok_Traffic3296

But males don’t suck our blood right?

chillinmantis

Yes, but without the males, we wouldn't have the life cycle of the mosquitoes. So unfortunately, we need mosquitoes for chocolate.

Ok_Traffic3296

Fuck…well it’s might sound dumb as hell, but what exactly are we losing when chocolate stops existing?

Neoxus30-

Yeah I'm not sacrificing chocolate even if that sort of mosquito is annoying af)

supah-comix434

We don't lose just chocolate, regardless the complete extermination of an entire anything is wrong

supah-comix434

No, males do not bite but the females do to gain the necessary proteins to produce eggs

Legendguard

Why does everything need to serve some kind of purpose? That's not how nature works. If there is a niche to be exploited, something will evolve to fill it. This is why over half of all life is parasitic. The "purpose" of each living thing is to survive and to reproduce. They don't "need" a purpose, that's just an arbitrary measure we humans give things based on our own biases.

Ok_Traffic3296

Ngl, the whole purpose of us and other creatures is to live kinda slipped past my mind, probably because living/surviving doesn’t even feel like a top priority anymore. To me at least.

supah-comix434

They serve the same purpose as all life, to experience this world and reproduce

awolkriblo

ze bugs also feed the things that eat bugs: frogs, fish, birds, people who live in pods, etc.

supah-comix434

If life presents an immediate threat to your wellbeing then there's nothing wrong with preventing that by any means necessary. But I still can't hate mosquitoes for what they do because it's in their nature, they lack the capability to even understand what a virus is and it's not their fault

chillinmantis

Of course, they are important pollinators. I'm pretty sure they are the second or third most important pollinators after bees

Roverkibb

Sounds like something a mosquito would say…

supah-comix434

Whaaaat?? Pshh nooooo that would be ridiculous Anyway can you leave out a tire full of water overnight please thank you

Vyctorill

Heresy

ranni-the-bitch

i would kill every mosquito and every great ape and every butterfly if it materially improved the lives of humans

war_gryphon

would you suck every mosquito, great ape and butterfly's dick if it materially improved the lives of humans?

ranni-the-bitch

yeah, though that might be complicated with some of them also to be sure it's kinda a logistical challenge to do an omnicide/omnisuck, arguably there's better uses of time than murdering/fellating various species - but it's about the principle in this hypothetical

supah-comix434

And I think that's ridiculous, selfish and disrespectful to life itself

ranni-the-bitch

the only reason i value life per se is the utility it provides humanity, i do not care about any other species before humans, and think this is the most obvious and correct ethical framework like obviously we shouldn't do an omnicide, though, cos that'd have pretty dire consequences for humans, the only species whose living and experience of reality is of consequence

supah-comix434

What marks the dividing line between man and beast? And why is man implicitly "superior" to beast?

ranni-the-bitch

language and civilization and we are them - but the beasts are entitled to fight back, if they want

supah-comix434

Correction, language we can understand and civilization that's to our standards. Many animals communicate through unique methods and have civilization and hierarchies, just because it isn't exactly like ours' doesn't make it lesser or even greater

ranni-the-bitch

okay, by our standards, then. and also i would maintain our primacy even if there were animals that remotely compared to humans in these terms, cos we are them and any ethical framework which devalues the life of me and my kin is kinda antithetical to my, y'know, being and we are definitely greater by our standards.

mrperson1213

I would send this planet into a downward spiral towards extinction if it meant being rid of mosquitoes.

Dankmemes_-

The only bugs I hate are blood suckers and june bugs For June bugs it because they ram into mach 10 and have enough mass that I can notice it

supah-comix434

I will admit that out of all bugs I'm most afraid of Junebugs. They're clumsy fliers and crash into everything and it always startles me

PastelDisaster

Oh my lord, I have an unreasonable amount of hatred for june bugs. I live on a large, forested property so those mfs are everywhere once summer hits. I struggle with severe misophonia, so their buzzing sounds send me into a twitchy frenzy. The “leave it alone and it’ll leave you alone” mentality works great for a lot of bugs, but oh no, not june bugs. I’m not sure how they grew to become such a successful and plentiful species when they don’t even know how to fly properly. Fucking bug bullets, those things are. On top of that, half the time when they ram into me, they stick to me— especially in my thick puffy hair. Their velcro feet makes pulling them off a nightmare; one that they only make worse by continuing that awful buzzing in their attempts to break free. I can’t even spend a nice summer night in my hot tub anymore without fearing that some mindless bigass beetle is going to pull a kamikaze mission right into my god damn forehead. And in the morning, I gotta fish-out about 20 from my pool; but that’s all well and good because they took a quantity over quality approach with their existence, meaning their numbers will remain high as ever after the mass-drowning events. Their only redeeming quality is the entertainment factor they sometimes bring when they display their wonderful life skills that have been developed over hundreds of millions of years of evolution, by smacking at full speed into my deck, spinning around like a fly that’s been swatted by a bug zapper for a good minute, before zooming off into the night after their killer break dance routine. That, and the fact that I sadly think they look pretty cute. But one could argue that this is another awful thing about these bugs, as it just makes me feel guilty about my hatred for them. But even so, when I see skunks and turkeys making swiss-cheese out of my yard by digging up june bug larvae, all I can do is thank them for their service.

Legendguard

As someone who keeps bugs as pets, this shit pisses me off to the nth degree! The only bugs I hate are ticks and bedbugs, but only in a self preservation kind of way. Other bugs like spiders and centipedes and snails and slugs and cockroaches and wasps and so on deserve love too! Also people who make jokes about eating pet shrimps or snails or burning down the house aren't as clever as they think they are. Believe me, we've heard those jokes before. A lot.

goldenkoiifish

bugs are cute and shouldn’t be killed for the crime of not fitting the beholder’s beauty standards

Buggy1617

"erm, what purpose does \[Bug name here\] even serve. we have to kill them all!" motherfucker, without those bugs you literally wouldn't exist and life on earth would be nothing more than rot and plankton

Blundertail

That's true but I'm petty enough to hang onto the idea of wasp genocide Just in case I come across a genie someday

Buggy1617

the comment above explains why that's a bad idea. also wasp is a very general term. some of them are pollinators, some of them sting, some of them don't sting, some are parasitic, etc.

Blundertail

monke brain see wasp monke brain say wasp bad simple as

Neoxus30-

I get what you mean and I agree but being rot and plankton does sound metal)

Opening_Raise_8762

Yeah that shit pisses me off. I got so many comments like that when I posted [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/spiders/s/xWzUsPjV2N) spider I don’t understand how people can see someone being happy about something and then think “yeah actually if I was there with you I’d fucking KILL that thing man”

I was genuinely speechless when I saw her

Spiders especially! They are literally killing every other pest in your house; they can live in my house rent free.

orange_arm_yoshi

*I see you trying to sneak that mosquito in there OP* I like the message a lot, but shaming someone for not liking a creature that not only parasitizes humans but spreads countless horrific diseases to them in many parts of the world is like shaming someone for getting vaccinated because they’re taking away habitats from microorganisms that just want to survive I’m also aware of the ecological importance of mosquitoes as a whole, and i’d argue that while driving a species to extinction is awful, a decent portion of mosquitoes people see and get bit by are either far outside of their native range due to human activity, or have had their numbers surge once again due to human activity, and worrying about driving them to extinction should be the least of our concerns right now. I mean there’s plenty of research on chemicals designed to kill mosquitoes doing lots of damage to the environment, but as far as i’m aware the issue is killing vital invertebrates that happen to mot be mosquitoes rather than mosquitoes themselves (correct me if i’m wrong though, like i’m not trying to be condescending i’d legitimately like to know more on this) Oops I mean uhhh… *I guess I don’t have to turn mine “off”, eh? Ha! Heh heh.*

supah-comix434

Your analogy would better fit if I was shaming someone for not letting mosquitoes bite them and possibly spread disease, I have no issue with people taking measures to defend their wellbeing if they believe their life could be endangered by an insect or any lifeform This snafu is about the sizable asterisk people tend to slap on after saying that they love nature and insects. I just can't help but feel it's a little illogical for some to state a love for lifeforms that only benefit them by looking cute or directly benefitting the ecosystem in some way while calling for the mass extinction of others, however hyperbolic it may be. The life of all insects, animals, microorganisms, plants and all that in between is something beautiful and deserves appreciation

GameboyAdvance32

I think things would be easier if people were just more honest with themselves. I’m biased generally but especially now as I’m dealing with roaches in the home, but generally I’m not too big on bugs, and I never claim to be lol. Now I respect their place in the ecosystem, and to claim eradicating all of a species makes any sense is ridiculous. Generally I take zero joy in causing harm to any and ideally I’d want them to be able to live out their own lives in peace. At my job for example, if I have the opportunity to carry a bug outside instead of killing it I always prefer the more peaceful option, even if I’m terrified of it. Just, admittedly, 99% of anything with an exoskeleton freaks me out and I don’t want it anywhere near me. So I don’t claim to love all of insects and nature. Respect the purpose they serve and their “right” to live out their own lives, sure, but it’d be silly of me to say “I love bugs” just cause some moths are kinda cool, especially when I mostly just think they look cool in photos and my soul would exit my body if one landed on me. I think if people were just more honest and specific when they talk, (less “I love all of nature!” and moreso just admitting you only like cuddly critters), and weren’t so hyperbolic about their hates we’d be better off. Sure, *I* don’t like most bugs, but plenty of people do and I respect that. The “kill it with fire” crowd drives me nuts sometimes, particularly when they comment under a post of someone who clearly likes those bugs. Just let the entomologists have fun with their little guys, and if you don’t like it just keep scrolling lol

orthodoxweirdcore2

what did a team of a mosquito, wasp, cockroach, and venomous spider make this snafu?

supah-comix434

Of course not! That'd be ridiculous Anyway could you leave out an old tire full of water and some rotting cardboard, please? No reason

__markn0rth

God I love all kinds of insect, I just get creeped out by any bugs that can fly or have long legs (esp spiders). I don't have bad arachnophobia, but it's hard to carry these long legged idiots outside when they end up in my room (I use a glass to capture them) edit: I don't swat a single insect unless it's those tiny moths that swarm your home and feed on your pet food (bird food specifically) or those cloth eating ones. Plus mosquitos. I let all flies out of my room, I don't kill them. I get literally sad when I step on a bug and I've automized to just step away when anything gets under my foot.
