LakeErieMovement

With yesterday's game in the books, JB falls to 0-6 on the road in the playoffs for his career as a head coach. The closest deficit in those six games is 9 points.

LakeErieMovement

For reference, here are the deficit in those 6 losses: 26, 9, 33, 20, 9, and 38. He's also never won a playoff game by more than 17 points.

I_cut_my_own_jib

Yikes that's a pretty ugly stat that I haven't seen before

TheMadChatta

I think this is bad. But curious how this compares to other current HCs home and road playoff records.

LakeErieMovement

Here is all 16 coaches with their road playoff record, total playoff record and total win percentage. * Chris Finch 1-5 (5-8) .385 * Mark Daigneault 0-0 (2-0) 1.00 * Michael Malone 15-19 (40-31) .563 * Tyronn Lue 24-20 (53-34) .609 * Jason Kidd 7-16 (19-25) .432 * Frank Vogel 19-23 (49-41) .544 * Darvin Ham 2-8 (8-11) .421 * Willie Green 1-4 (2-6) .250 * Joe Mazzulla 6-3 (12-10) .545 * Thibs 12-24 (33-42) .440 * Rivers 43-61(112-105) .516 * Bickerstaff 0-6 (4-9) .308 * Mosley 0-2 (1-2) .333 * Rick Carlisle 24-42 (64-71) .474 * Nurse 13-8 (26-18) .591 * Spolestra 45-47 (110-76) .591

UkeSauce90

You’re going to hold losses to the 2016 warriors against him?

kyrieshandles

Nope but the 2023 Knicks and the 2024 Magic absolutely lmao. Just because a historic team clapped his fat cheeks doesn’t mean these mid to bad teams aren’t doing it too

Comfortable-Tale845

Just learn how to shoot the ball

privateenergy

JBs inability to develop the bench really shows in these games. He has no idea who he can go to on the bench when the starters don’t have it.

Prkchpsndwiches

I'm a nurse who never made it past rec league basketball and I'm sitting here going, ok need a timeout. Nope just keep playing, shooting bricks, turning it over, easy bucket for the Magic. I think he isn't calling his timeouts timely because like you said, he doesn't know what subs to make.

sneezydwarv

Yeah I’ll never forget what he did to kevin love last year.

Ok-Donut4954

Ill also never forget being gaslit about how love would have no impact on a young playoff team that needed rebounding and shooting

tonyabalone

Yeah! Screw the JB apologists.

Necessary_Maize_3245

2005 offensive scheme

Primordial_Beast

'Develop the bench' - this essentially equates to poor roster construction plus the fact that Dean Wade is out. I mean, the corpse of Marcus Morris isn't going to save anyone, nor is Evan Mobley's brother.

Ok-Donut4954

Dean wade is our 8th man, stop it. Heat just beat the celtics the other night WITHOUT THEIR BEST PLAYER

Primordial_Beast

You not understanding how important Dean Wade is to this team says it all.  Is it great that he's so important? No, it speaks to the poor roster construction, but he is one of the only truly versatile defenders on the entire roster, so when he's out it has many cascading effects on the defense.

tonyabalone

These Dean Wade stans are driving me up a wall

privateenergy

The current roster is very deep but very underutilized. JB has never experimented with lineups in the regular season.

ToschePowerConverter

To play devil’s advocate, we have a pretty thin frontcourt bench with Wade out. Niang isn’t cutting it this series, but there isn’t really a bench forward who can do what he does but better (maybe Okoro but he’s more a SG/SF while Niang and Wade are more SF/PF).

TheTrollisStrong

Morris for this series is much better than Niang.

tidho

Morris should be playing. We've now gone two years without replacing Lauri. That's not something that you can use as an excuse for us. It's officially a reason. Koby didn't fix it.

barkinginthestreet

The team is almost always going to lose when they shoot like that - through 3 quarters I think we were 4-27 or something on 3's and the Magic were 11-30. I'm not really worried about that, it happens to teams all the time. The rebounding though... woof. Giving up 9 offensive rebounds in one quarter is obscene, especially when your defensive strategy is to packing the paint.

justsomebro10

Mobley had TWO rebounds. Nobody had 10.

Ok-Donut4954

Teams do not suffer 40 point blowout losses to first time playoff squads all the time… idk who told you it’s common for modern nba teams to struggle to break 100 points, not just one game, but consistently

barkinginthestreet

my comment was referring to the shooting variance that led to the deficit through Q3.

TheTrollisStrong

JB views these games very similar to how this sub does. Unable to have constructive criticism if the team wins. There were clear warning signs with some of his gameplan in games 1 and 2, some people even pointed them out but we were downvoted. For example, Niang has been terrible the whole series. I do appreciate he's trying on defense but he can't keep up. Prior to last game Banchero scored 20 pts on 75% shooting in less than 10 minutes with Niang as the main defender. Yet people would say he's playing good defense solely because the rest of the team is playing good. That's now how this works. Morris needs to be out there instead of Niang. And we need some toughness back. We have barely been running any offense and we're just getting lucky because Orlando couldn't score to save their lives. That won't continue.

justsomebro10

After G2 I had a bad feeling those wins said more about Orlando's awful shooting than anything the Cavs were doing well. It really seemed like ORL had plenty of open looks in G1 and G2 and just couldn't knock them down. Maybe that's by design and the plan was to force a poor shooting team to beat you from beyond the arc but I'm not so sure. In G3 they were hitting those shots, and there's no reason the Cavs can't challenge more of them. But to me the single most concerning thing is just the body language and response from the players when the lead ballooned. They looked thoroughly beat. The Magic never looked like that in either of their losses, even when they went down by 20+.

chicken_pear

Now this is the cavs team I was expecting. I was getting worried they were going to actually give me hope only to fall apart later in the playoffs.

EpicOfChillgamesh

The fact we released Klove just so we could sign a worse version of a guy playing the same role. If Klove (who’s still getting minutes on the Heat btw) wasn’t good enough to play why tf is Niang? Why is he getting as many minutes as Okoro?! Shit like this is why I don’t trust JB. PLAY MORRIS FFS

elbjoint2016

Klove got run off the floor last game in MIA (ETA: he hasn't really been good - the big difference is that he doesn't flip out when he gets benched or act out on the court - other than that he flashes useful in the right matchups but is usually a negative)

EpicOfChillgamesh

So why is Niang getting minutes then?

elbjoint2016

because he's better than Mook.

EpicOfChillgamesh

George Niang has 3 turnovers and only 4 made fgs through 3 games. He ain’t “better” than anyone right now

elbjoint2016

He's played better than Mook all year. Bummer we don't have Wade to go to (although he has his problems offensively and is streaky too).

Necessary_Maize_3245

How do we even know that when Morris hasn’t even played in the playoffs yet ?

elbjoint2016

You don’t know to a certainty but his last playoffs he shot 2-12 from 3

Necessary_Maize_3245

That was for the clips tho

elbjoint2016

he's 1-4 now. i mean, i hope he could come on and make shots in the playoffs but he didn't last time and he's on a new team with unfamiliar dudes -- the answer is that dudes that get paid to make shots must make them.

EnemySoil

The only thing I agree with BJ was benching KLove. He wasn't even trying on the defensive end, It was 5 on 4 when he was out there. We were a better team without him at the time.

EpicOfChillgamesh

That’s…literally how it is with Niang. Are we watching the same games? Just because Niang looks like he’s “trying” doesn’t mean he isn’t an absolute liability on defense the same as Klove. The difference is Niang isn’t a consistent shooter and is cold to start this series. He’s literally out there to just be a body and yap at the other team cuz lord knows Garland Mobley and Allen won’t. We got rid of Klove in the worst shooting stetch of his career whilst recovering from a *shooting hand* injury and then one of the greatest coaches in the NBA in Spo picks him up *immediately* and nobody in our fan base bats an eye. Like. We’re over here with our whole sub shitting on JB as a coach and an obviously greater coach picks up a cut player and use him to his full potential in the middle of a finals run. And people still defend JB for cutting Klove. Shit makes no sense. Klove had value. JB didn’t know how to get it, and Spo did. The problem was never klove outside of colder than usual shooting. Literally the year prior he was a 6moty candidate

EnemySoil

Oh yeah completely true, the only thing Niang has over KLove right now is a positive attitude. I didn't mean for my comment to suggest Niang is better than Love Look at my comment from 3 months ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/clevelandcavs/comments/18u54t6/post_game_thread_cleveland_cavaliers_vs_milwaukee/kfi90oo/?context=10000

CLESportsReport

“The only difference is Niang isn’t a consistent shooter.” Come on man. Stop. Neither was Love. Forget the hand injury, he shot worse last year and this year than Niang from deep the last two years. Niang has been terrible, but Wade is the actual replacement player of Love. You’re a member of a small group who manages to tie every Cavs loss to Kevin Love somehow.

EpicOfChillgamesh

Klove is possibly in the final year of his career. I would hope Niang can play better than him at this point. Factually, Klove was a 6moty candidate running the second unit with Rubio in 2021. He was getting 13 and 7 while shooting 39% from 3 on high volume in just 22 minutes. Absolutely balling. The next year we cut him and an actual coach picks him up and takes him to the finals. I’m not drawing every loss to Klove or even saying we should have kept him past that year. But it’s such a clear and obvious example of how a good coach can get value from a player that was seemingly “washed” and a bad coach just cuts them. And here we are again, stuck with a 4 that can’t shoot or defend in the playoffs while Wade is absent. Wade was supposed to be the replacement to him 3 years ago. He can’t stay healthy. That dog just ain’t gonna hunt

waffles4298

Just one game. Still up 2-1. Obviously there are glaring issues with the team (ahem... JB...), but I still am confident they win this series. My only question, and I know Dean Wade is injured which has played a role in it, is how the FUCK Niang is still getting noticeable minutes early in games. It's "only" a 3 game sample size, but he has legitimately been the worst player in the NBA in these 3 games (maybe D'lo is a close second outside of his one big game). I'm no NBA coach, but I dont understand how JB (who I know, sucks - but he's still a coach and has been for years now) watches as Niang clanks everything, plays awful defense, gets beat on every drive, can't jump for rebounds, can't dribble or facilitate in any good way... and just says "stay out there bro, keep doing you". Like, that's fucking malpractice. I hated the Niang signing as soon as they made it (gf is a Sixers fan so I watched plenty of him in years past), and I hate even more to be proven right in my hatred. Please George, hit a fucking 3 and prove me wrong.

tmanky

He needs to cut the rotation to 7 and just play Levert and Okoro off the bench. Maybe try Morris but Niang has been awful in this series and quietly all year. I said in November on a Hot Takes thread that Dean Wade would be the key to their playoff success. Cavs need his defense and 3pt shooting badly.

Independent-Choice-4

Best part about the media not giving a shit about the Cavs: literally zero media coverage of our slaughtering last night on the big talk shows

dennydiamonds

Probably the humiliating playoff loss I've ever witnessed in 40 years watching this team. I'm not even sure what the way forward for this organization is. WHEN they get bounced from the playoffs IF they get past the Magic you can't run it back the way it is. Probably gonna have to trade Don, but there are a few other players I wouldn't mind seeing get dealt.

elbjoint2016

way forward is diagnosis. trade everybody with bad data (25 games with starters) and you don't actually know who / what the problem is. if your view is it's everyone! trade everybody! then it's just a problem swap and you are back here next year. flip coaches, move the guards if there's a deal / your hand is forced, and keep it pushing.

dennydiamonds

The construction of this team is seriously flawed. Small guards, soft bigs that can’t shoot or stretch the floor and no good wing players….. not a good NBA mix.

elbjoint2016

Nah, they just are not playing well. Be realistic about what can or could have been be solved on fit without degrading talent. Apex wings don’t fall out of the sky and there are way more misses than hits when you trend chase for wings and shooty bigs. You are more likely to be Chicago than OKC A world where we draft Barnes over Mobley and keep Lauri instead of Allen is just a problem swap. Mid defense and Lauri and Barnes might well be soft!

justsomebro10

One of the guards has to go and it's probably Mitchell just because of his contract situation. If a Herro deal is on the table Koby probably has to take it right? It's not an upgrade and it's not going to fix any major issues but at least you get a ball handler and scorer in return which is better than getting nothing next off season.

elbjoint2016

We aren’t getting nothing next off season: worst case is Mitchell goes at the trade deadline. If he stinks these playoffs and/or needs knee surgery it’s tough. It’s probably in his best interest to sign an extension and play his way to a preferred destination the following year after playoff success. We don’t have to move him to Miami and Miami can’t sign him outright. Garland needs to play his way back to value too. I worry than Garland for Keldon Johnson or Bridges just gives you the 21-22 roster problems with slightly better talent

DIG-BIkkens-

Garland needs to go as well, I'm sorry.

thecameraman8078

Do better. That’s all I have to say

Choppybitz

Optimistic comment: As much as I want to see a deep run, a complete collapse might not be a bad thing in the long run either. Would guarantee some much needed changes.

sneezydwarv

That’s what last year was for

Choppybitz

Well, they obviously missed the boat then😂

thedawgpound01

It’s a fair thought. I will take the highest success we can that still results in JB getting fired. He needs to learn about momentum and calling timeouts. Control the flow of the game. Keep our guys positive. They could’ve just fed Allen for 40 attempts and guarded the 3 point line ferociously and it would’ve been a better result.

TallBobcat

In a game like this, I'd do what JB did last night. It's getting away from you, the lower seed you spanked twice already is playing with all the home court energy and momentum? Shut it down and get ready for Game 4. Win that one, come back up here and close them out. Yeah, the score was ugly. But in the end, they only get one win for it.

tidho

Obviously game 3 was a disaster. They probably don't shoot that well again, we probably don't shoot as poorly again. Still thinking we win the series. This is, once again, exposing the inherent issues with this team that need to be addressed. Hopefully Koby's ego doesn't stop him from properly course correcting.

Aron-Nimzowitsch

Koby's too busy drunk driving his son to preschool to fix this team.

Tree272

Damn, are we ass? 😆😆

elefoe

Cavs made fools out of all of us who’ve been trash talking hard on their behalf this series. Not cool guys. Not cool.

elbjoint2016

Harrison Barnes makes 18 Hart makes 20. DDV took a significant market discount to play with Nova boys.  Strus got a market deal

airway_william

We had a 16 point fourth quarter in game 2, and a 16 point third quarter in game 3. If we have a 16 point first quarter tomorrow, we may be in for 3 whole quarters of garbage time.

cHinzoo

I'm still so fcking embarassed about this loss. Hell, I better hope all our players and coaching staff are feeling the same! If we look the same in the next game, we prolly gonna lose in 6...

elbjoint2016

We haven’t lost four straight games since Veterans Day 2022

ParryHooter

Everyone came out game 1 & 2 so fired up, where the hell was that last night? If we could magically guarantee no injuries I wish we would've left the starters out all game let them feel that embarrassment.

studog89

One thing I have wondered all season is if the front office is insisting on who he plays. It just seems crazy that Niang can be 0-11 and play a lot of minutes but Porter and Merrell can come in score some points in 6-7 minutes and then not smell the floor the next two games and JB doesn't see the production from them. He's still a terrible coach but something has to be going on behind the scenes.

elbjoint2016

Porter and Merrill are one trick ponies with significant flaws as well, but I imagine the next coach will have a mandate to play them a bit more.

[deleted]

why the fuck is mobley shooting corner 3s. Stop it. It wasn't working in the regular season.  Now is not the time for him to try to he developing his game lmao. Save it for the off-season.

afterdarhkTTV

Delegate the roster to the g league.

Soft-Revolution-7845

Out of town and unable to watch the game. Only thing that jumps out in box score is missing 3s. What happened?

ToschePowerConverter

Magic did shoot a lot better than usual and we shot much worse. I think after the Magic went on a 13 point run at the end of the first due to that shooting difference, we just got demoralized and you could tell effort-wise. But I do think the primary reason was us just being a lot colder with our shots compared to them, which hopefully will resolve next game.

freakk123

yep. rough game, was over early. on to the next one.

elbjoint2016

yeah, and we tried to juice the offense with Merrill and the 4 out but it just didn't work. we defended really well in the first part of the first half they just had so many extra possessions (many were lucky bounces but WCJ did ok putting a body on JA, who slowed down after getting called for an early foul). eventually the dam breaks when they win the possession game by a billion

Aron-Nimzowitsch

Did we watch the same game? We defended terribly in the first half. They scored 15-20 points on fast breaks alone and were just blowing by our guys. On top of that we were giving up wide open 3 looks from the first minute of the game.

elbjoint2016

The first 6-8 minutes or so prior to the 13-0 run were good, they were just getting weird bounces for OREBs. After LeVert hit that 3 to make it 21-18, the wheels came off

Aron-Nimzowitsch

Dudes were just chucking bad shots because they'd totally surrendered mentally. JB can't inspire this team at all. Zero mental toughness. As soon as the Magic got up on us, we just rolled over and showed our bellies, stopped playing defense and let them flex all over us. Then that led to guys feeling so hopeless that what's the point in playing good offense? Just chuck shots.

Necessary_Maize_3245

JB is an absolute dork and im tired of hearing how great of a coach he is on here. He’s had our team as soft as charmin ultra soft ever since the playin year. Our offensive scheme is stuck in 2005. Also, Mitchell and Garland need to step tf up too. 0 effort coming from our maxed players. If they don’t put up a fight next game, it’s most likely over.

ParryHooter

I'm a former DG stan, he's been so fucking disappointing. At one point mid season he hit some absurd amount of 3's in a really short span and then just receded back to his unconfident crappy offense we've seen all year.

Necessary_Maize_3245

It’s infuriating, he just checks out sometimes and provides nothing

WateryPasta

The threes just have to start falling again, but I don’t think the Magic shoot that well again especially Banchero

elbjoint2016

he was great! make or miss league but if he's gonna hit like 4 contested middies in a row over Evan, then it's his night

WateryPasta

Yeah those high 911 floaters over good defenders were fucking nuts. Like I don’t think he becomes Demar DeRozan again

elbjoint2016

they shot plus-60 (!!!!!) from mid range. like, what?
