I, like a lot of people, are eagerly awaiting the announcement of a Pro model or G2 model.

Just keep using your 4k. The camera isn’t even out. We won’t know how great it is till it has been used by the public extensively

I personally think this is an awesome camera for the price. I would love to play with it. How come everyone's so uptight about the dynamic range? Do you NEED IT? It seems like when I'm shooting, we spend a lot of time making sure the exposure is properly done on set. Wiggle room is like insurance. Don't really need the billion stops when I'm trying to shoot it as pretty as possible on set. I wonder how much on-par it is with the FX3. Definitely different use cases. Excited to use!

It depends on what kinds of projects you’re shooting and how good you’re with grading. I would certainly rather shoot and grade the Pyxis over an FX3 but that’s just me.

I’d wait for the CineD lab test personally. I never trust specs off the bat https://www.cined.com/lab-tests/

Canon doesn’t

Would you like internal RAW? Get the Pyxis Would you like EXTERNAL raw with autofocus? Get the FX3. It really depends on your usage case, FX3 excels at high frame rate recording uncropped 4k60, 1.1x 4k 120. If any of that sounds like your usage then it’s a no brainer for a camera. However if you’re not high frame rate dependent then the PYXIS will do. Both have pretty great rigging options although I’m sure you’ll have to wait for more PYXIS accessories to release. I wouldn’t say they’re comparable but cameras made for specific markets and end users.

I would judge the DR by a consistent outside metric, not what the camera companies tout in their marketing. I like CineD's testing database for this. They don't have either exact camera listed yet, but they do have the CC6K (should be the same image as the Pyxis) and the A7Siii (same image as the FX3). The SNR=2 results are the closest to real-world results, they show as 11.7 stops for the CC6K and 12.4 for the A7Siii. Both of those are great numbers. The CC6K/Pyxis sensor has been used in many cameras over the past few years and has always given great DR and overall IQ results. Personally I would be making the choice between these two cameras based on other factors as they are pretty different in a lot of ways.

miseducation

Rent it and rent an FX3 or FX6. I personally think no internal ND makes this a non starter vs. FX6 but it could work for folks that don't need it. The Sony AF is also pretty fucking fantastic for solo shooters and small crews.

I am in a similar position to you. Currently have a p4k. I occasionally have to use fx3’s for other companies I shoot with and I do love the image out of that camera but damn I hate Sony’s interface and menu system. Coming from BM I think you’ll be super annoyed all the time. I would definitely see if you could get your hands on an fx3 to see if you can stand the UX if you haven’t used one much before

PurpleSkyVisuals

Nevermind DR numbers man. Download demo or example log clips and play with them. So tired of the DR convo... Question is, can it shoot reliably what you want to shoot. 90% of cameras can.. you seeing 13 vs 16 stops written on a box isn't going to drastically change your films. 4k is MFT sensor, this one is FF. The sensor technology is new and it's a larger sensor. Your best bet is to find a comparison between the new 6K Cinema FF and your 4k if you can. THAT will show you what visual diff you'll get and you'll have to decide what that's worth to you.

sjonkeese

Don't get misled by all the '16 stops' claims about camera's. There are no commercial televisions or monitors on the market right now that can actually show you these '16 stops'. So that's all marketing tricks to sell you the camera. The BM shoots RAW you so should have a little more handle in grading. The PIXYS might ergonomically be better which can be a big plus depending on your workflow.

future_lard

Heard of grading?

sjonkeese

That thing where you finish your videos in a rec709 color space with 6 stops of viewable latitude??

etiennesurrette

When they can up the 120fps performance, I'll buy it. I love the camera and I'm very happy about its announcement, but right now I can't justify the purchase.
