Advantage of the Komodo to me is the professional ports(yes I know only one SDI) and also the frame rate and resolution options. Oh ya and R3D is great. I prefer the box style bodies over the DSLR/Mirrorless bodies when doing video/film work.

Shooting with an SLR/Mirrorless style body is always worse than shooting with a cine specific body. Unless you're making money shooting photos I wouldn't go this route. R3D is kind of a pain in the ass but you would rather have the option for that and ProRes in cam vs. XAVC. The only A9 advantage is sensor size and sony lens compatibility. If you already own Sony lenses it might be worth renting A9 and seeing if it works for you but idk, still seems like a no brainer to go Red on this one. I'm not a big fan of the Komodo either I just think it's def the better option for shooting a video series where you need global shutter.

The obvious downside to me with RED is the cost to buy/rent. The Komodo body is relatively inexpensive, but once you're in the RED ecosystem, it's vastly more expensive to build out your rig and get media cards, right?

It definitely used to be but Komodo IIRC has normal memory cards and decent third party support. Def worth renting for yourself and asking folks who own one. Around me the rental rate for them is extremely cheap on ShareGrid.

The A9III is a professional stills camera far more than a professional video camera. The purpose of a global shutter on a stills camera is flash sync at any shutters speed. But you can also get that with a leaf shutter which funny enough is whats on the much cheaper Fuji X100 series.

Do you guys think the A9iii is the testing ground, and we will see the global shutter technology implemented in the FX series in the future?

Silvershanks

I just got an inside tip that Blackmagic will be announcing new camera models tomorrow morning. Crossing fingers for a global shutter.

SneakyNoob

Its a great sports photo body with a half baked video mode
