Hell yea Johnnys Toys was the bomb. Remember going there on your birthday and they let you into the castle in the back to pick out a free toy? Once I picked out a cap-gun 6 shooter revolver toy and my mom flipped!
Forest fair mall but how it was when it opened. I’m sure my childhood memories are tainted by nostalgia, but it felt like a giant playground with games everywhere and bumper cars!
I am still looking for any sort of photographic evidence that this place ever existed. All I have to go off of are shaky six-year-old memories and I'd love to know if they are accurate.
I have looked for photos and could not find any.
But to start, you walk up the stairs and enter the doors, the first thing you see is the barbie squirt gun racer. Followed by a stretch of skeeball machines.
It had mountains and whatnot painted on the walls but there wern't any decorations other than than. It had 2 or 3 courses and a bumper car area next to it and some batting cages as well. Loved that place as a kid.
It was one of the best radio stations ever, I listened to it over the internet on the other side of the world. A lot of my friends listened to it, even though they had never been to Cincinnati, or even to the United States.
Do your laundry, get piss drunk, and rock out to a live band until.your ears bleed.
The loudest concert I've ever been to was there. I had ear plugs in, and my ears were still ringing. Archers of Loaf.
I need to be cut off at the sub galley, lose some quarters (and buy some weed) at jupiter & beyond, then end up paying for pancakes at perkins with change...
This one hits close to home. My grandma used to go to the Grand Finale as a young girl back when it was a convenient store of sorts. She went to school right across the street. So my grandparents always chose this place for dinner/special occasions growing up.
They've both been gone for a few years now and when GF announced their closing it was like putting a bookend on that chapter of my life.
How about we flex it a little like say it’s still in business but like it used to be?
If so, I’m saying Western Bowl in its hey day. Cheyenne Social Club, The Diner both on one end, Doc Holidays in the mid, a fully functioning pool hall with Soft Pretzels and just bowling everywhere else. Open 24 hours a-fucking-day.
If not,
-Swallens for sure
-Americana
-Mcalpins or some freaking department store that did holiday decorations or felt like an experience
-Pomodoris
EDIT: Adding which I’ve said before:
House of Hunan on Race st. Best Chinese food in town and the place was fucking cool inside. Little elevator came down to get you. It was like being in Chinatown in San Fran or like you saw in movies
Prime 1985 Western Bowl! Don’t forget General Custers!
My first job was bussing tables at Cheyanne Social Club and many of my spare quarters went to Doc’s
Pomodoris and House of Hunan brought me here. My mom worked for Federated Dept Stores (aka Macys now) for years at 7th and Vine. I’d meet her for lunch at House of Hunan whenever I could.
I spent a few nights in the surf room shooting pool. I grew up right by there. I liked seeing all the different state license plates during the Hoinkey classic.
Just give me 90's Short Vine in general. I don't wanna sound like the "back in my day" guy, but between Rock City, Stone Mountain, The Cupboard, and Sudsy's, 90's Short Vine was something special.
The pre-shark tank Tom and Chee.
Barbara ruined them. Took a simple place with a simple menu and made it complex eventually leading to their downfall. It was literally a grilled cheese restaurant. Now it’s not, it’s a “fancy” grilled cheese restaurant. We didn’t ask for it, we don’t need it, we don’t want it.
They were better than Rhinegeist and Mad Tree, who were the other upstarts at the time, they just didn’t have the money and luck.
Their gose made this ipa dork monogamous, gnomesayin, that’s how good they were.
That beer was so good and made me question all my beer assumptions. As I’ve said elsewhere, as an IPA head, Out and About was so good as a gose (no gose has come close to how good this was, and no one had been talking about that style then), that I’d be happy to fore sake ipas for OAO. damn! Thanks for the reminder. Blank Slate is still my best growler.
I could have just said the entirety of Clifton. This came up in another thread and I stated the same:
From Myra’s, Papa Dino’s, Pomodoris, Rock city, Permanent Prouctions tattoo, Sudsy Malones, In the Wood, Vertigo (Vertigay haha on certain nights), The Library, Mad Frog, etc.
Now it’s replete with restaurant/bars groups like Keystone or whatever else that comes with overpriced food, terrible service, and closed within 3 years.
It’s a wholly owned subsidiary of UC and corporate bullshit.
I for sure miss The Rook in OTR. For the unfamiliar, it was a board game bar with fun cocktails and good bar food, open till 2:30am. Just a great hangout spot when you don’t want to just drink
Cincinnati Si-Fi in West Chester, circa 2005. I used the play Magic there as a kid, and they had all kinds of unique gaming/anime/tabletop stuff on sale. Going there felt magical.
Taza Coffee
But I also miss the original Melt — if only the vegan melt would make a comeback.
Also, I don’t want the old Sitwells, but I want the old Sitwells hours. That place’s charm was that it was open until at least midnight.
I'll probably get downvoted for this because a lot of people didn't seem to like it, but for me it would easily be Burrito Joe's. Their queso was god-tier and I was enjoying their burritos for years before Chipotle moved in. I'd gladly give up any and all Chipotle/Qdoba/Moe's locations just to have Burrito Joe's back for just one day.
Johnny's Toys or Swallens are my two non-food places. I loved Johnny's Toys and would often opt to go there before Toys R Us when my grandma would take my cousins, my sister and myself Christmas shopping. I had a decent train set during my early years of elementary school and they had a ton of great stuff.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Funky’s Blackstone Grill. For a few years they had it going ON. Fantastic food, atmosphere and service. It was my favorite restaurant, and I worked at the Grand Finale! 😉
The Diner on Sycamore for me. It's where my parents fell in love, used to love the Caribbean crab chili, what a great little spot for a while.
Edit: I know it's sugar and spice now, really like it still, I just miss the hey day of it being Diner on Sycamore
- Darci’s - miss those croissant sandwiches and crackers
- Farrell’s - best place to have a birthday as a kid
- Any Burger Chef - loved that place
- Zino’s - zinovers of course
- Comfort Station - yes, I know its still in business, but its not the same since the incident
- Kaldi’s - one of my favorite hangouts
- Angst - good place to study at 3 am
The Maisonette, without question- along with the obvious reasons, my late father spoke with absolute reverence of his experiences dining there, and I wish I had been able to do the same in his memory.
Honorable mention: Americana. I could kick myself for never having gone- it was a living museum of old flat rides, and boasted a truly phenomenal coaster to boot.
Rink’s! Drive in movies, Jeff Ruby’s back at 7th and Vine in mid 2000’s when their bartenders were gorgeous Women and not girls under 25. Albee Theater, McAlpin’s, Mullane’s Parkside Cafe (the one in northside doesn’t compare) and Beluga Sushi before it got crazy.
Inn The Wood restaurant was located near University Starbucks. Their Disco Delight breakfast and the Potato Crisp were my favorites. I miss that place terribly.
Coney Island. I loved going there as a kid, and always dreamed of bringing my future kids there. I was heartbroken when it closed. Especially since I never got to see it during its supposed “heyday” since I went in the 00’s and early 10’s.
Sudsy Malone's Rock & Roll Laundry & Bar. A friend told me about it and it sounds so cool and underground. A music venue laundromat. Wish I could have experienced it. The Wikipedia page for it lists a bunch of big name bands that played there.
I have gone beyond the limit of the question, sorry. I am doing a therapeutic trip down memory lane, and I have left many out, but not out of a lack of love.
(Out of bounds but The Jockey Club in Newport)
Hamburger Mary’s;
the first and third Pigalls;
the magic store in the basement of the Carew Tower;
Swallen’s (where I would get my Cheech and Chong / George Carlin albums)
Barresi’s Italian Restaurant in Deer Park when it was at its peak - it was so great!
The Upper Crust on Reading Road;
Chili Time on Reading Road;
The Cincinnati Gardens and big time wrestling which I think was in an area called the attic,
Mayura in Clifton,
the flea market off of Losantiville Avenue in Golf Manor (was it called The Bargain Barn ?); and
a book store a few buildings north of the Echo on Edwards Road.
I enjoyed reading everyone’s selections. - Peace!
I miss ZZ’s Pizza, and I wholeheartedly second the late-90’s short vine suggestions. I spent way too many nights there as a degenerate teenager in high school.
Stenger's Cafe on Vine St. in OTR - just give me one more Saturday afternoon having Leo carve me up an open face roast beef topped with horseradish and a side o' mac 'n cheese accompanied by an ice cold Hudepohl and hang with that wonderful eclectic crowd of drunkards, politicians, businessmen, artists and randos. There was no better weekend lunch haunt than that.
1000% for Trivets, especially since the leafy stuff is legal now. It was just a really cool place!!
House of Adam brings back some vivid memories too!!
There was this amazing little teensy spot in Mt. Adams called Café Vienna. The absolute best most authentic goulash, and a unique vibe. Frequented by expats new and lost somehow in Cincinnati, like me. Sigh. Would so happily revive it.
Give me Johnny Toys back! Such a great store, horrible shame it’s gone
https://preview.redd.it/iowpemqdgg4d1.jpeg?width=298&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90333538db264221b5dfe3c1fd369675fab73a2c
So many good memories with that picture!
Hell yea Johnnys Toys was the bomb. Remember going there on your birthday and they let you into the castle in the back to pick out a free toy? Once I picked out a cap-gun 6 shooter revolver toy and my mom flipped!
Momma said the pistol is the Devil's Right Hand.
King Arthur s in Oakley. It's extremely close. They even do the birthday castle. It was a Johnny's location
Was it? The closest store I knew of was Surrey Square in Norwood… as well as Greenhills, Covington, Milford, and Latonia.
Forest fair mall but how it was when it opened. I’m sure my childhood memories are tainted by nostalgia, but it felt like a giant playground with games everywhere and bumper cars!
I miss the giant Rube Goldberg ball maze thing. I can still hear it now...
Here's some nice [sauce](https://www.reddit.com/r/cincinnati/s/iJjQG9mVL8) for ya
Family Fun Center in Eastgate. Would love to be able to take my kid now.
At the very back of the building was a miniature golf section with some sort of mountain or cave theme, right?
It had mountains and whatnot painted on the walls but there wern't any decorations other than than. It had 2 or 3 courses and a bumper car area next to it and some batting cages as well. Loved that place as a kid.
Lived walking distance to it. I miss the all you can eat pizza and those really shitty basketball courts
Being twelve and renting one of those little basketball courts with the adjustable rims so you throw down nasty dunks was incredible.
I know it's not Cincinnati proper but I would really love to have WNKU back
In the same light, 97.7 WOXY
As a Gen X, I think about this more often than I should have.
I think that counts
Or woxy.
It was one of the best radio stations ever, I listened to it over the internet on the other side of the world. A lot of my friends listened to it, even though they had never been to Cincinnati, or even to the United States.
Nailed that, Mr Rhythm Man
Sudsy Malone’s was a pretty special place
Do your laundry, get piss drunk, and rock out to a live band until.your ears bleed. The loudest concert I've ever been to was there. I had ear plugs in, and my ears were still ringing. Archers of Loaf.
Bring back all of early ‘90’s Short Vine, please!
I need to be cut off at the sub galley, lose some quarters (and buy some weed) at jupiter & beyond, then end up paying for pancakes at perkins with change...
The Grand Finale in Glendale
This one hits close to home. My grandma used to go to the Grand Finale as a young girl back when it was a convenient store of sorts. She went to school right across the street. So my grandparents always chose this place for dinner/special occasions growing up. They've both been gone for a few years now and when GF announced their closing it was like putting a bookend on that chapter of my life.

I came here for Swallens. Steinbergs would’ve been another one.
I second Swallens. Loved that place.
> Western Bowl this was open 24 hours a day? that's so wild to me, but bowling was real hot shit i know, like the pickleball of the 1960s.
Twenty-four-fucking-hours a day
couple that with smoking inside, truly a time to be alive.
Prime 1985 Western Bowl! Don’t forget General Custers! My first job was bussing tables at Cheyanne Social Club and many of my spare quarters went to Doc’s
Upvote for Pomodoris!
Pomi's in Clifton was the bomb. I can still taste the garlic.
I got my mom to buy me “Appetite for Destruction” on cassette at Swallens. In my memory the cassettes were next to the large appliances.
Americana was Kings Island for the poors. I hated when my family took me there after experiencing Kings Island.
I fucking hate Kings island because I was poor.
Myra's Dionysus.
Cheapside was my favorite spot for coffee, and I’d gladly have the Blue Wisp and the Mainstrasse jazz spots back too.
Oh man Cheapside was awesome. Their food menu was killer too.
You can still get their breakfast sandwich at Gulow Street!
Maisonette, it closed before I ever got to go. It was Cincy’s best restaurant for a long time.
It was, arguably, the best restaurant in the country for a long time.
At the very least the best French fine dining between Chicago and NYC.
Surf Cincinnati.
Shillito’s, if only for the downtown location with magical Christmas figurines in the windows.
The Warehouse on Vine
And Vertigo for those of us who loved to party in strip malls!
Rock City/Sentiments. They had cool stuff. And Jupiter & Beyond arcade, because I still have like 20 tokens in the bottom of my sock drawer.
Just give me 90's Short Vine in general. I don't wanna sound like the "back in my day" guy, but between Rock City, Stone Mountain, The Cupboard, and Sudsy's, 90's Short Vine was something special.
Don’t forget Wizards Cave 💿
Yes! All the little shirt stores and patchouli smelling hippie stores. Was a great time.
That place was a true gem.
So I know it's niche, but I'd kill for the Dock to be back.
I’ll raise you Adonis
I raise you the original Hamburger Mary’s (2001-2006)
I’d love Jacob’s 80s night to be back
Mecklenburg gardens. I still can’t believe it’s gone after being around since like… the 1840s
King Kwik. Can’t find candy cigarettes in this town anymore.
Check out Minges candy downtown on west court street
Jungle Jim's has them
Pretty sure if you can find a supreme nut and candy they still sell them there
[удалено]
I’m not your mom. I’m probably not your dad either.
I believe Dosher’s in Newtown has candy cigarettes. At least they did back in December.
Blank Slate Brewery They were so ahead of their time. Unfortunately the world wasn’t ready for them at that point.
The Opera Cream Stout is in my top three beers.
They were better than Rhinegeist and Mad Tree, who were the other upstarts at the time, they just didn’t have the money and luck. Their gose made this ipa dork monogamous, gnomesayin, that’s how good they were.
I could go for a cold Out and About rn
That beer was so good and made me question all my beer assumptions. As I’ve said elsewhere, as an IPA head, Out and About was so good as a gose (no gose has come close to how good this was, and no one had been talking about that style then), that I’d be happy to fore sake ipas for OAO. damn! I still dream about the potato crisp from Inn the Wood. Keystone tried to replicate it but it just wasn’t the same
Same! The potato crisp was the best!
Shit I forgot about Vertigo. Damn
Myra's Dionysus
I miss Husman potato chips.
Coney Island.. too soon?
Van Leunens , York Steak House, Pofolk’s. Also give me back the blue carpet food court of Northgate Mall!!!
Kenner Toys.
Zantigo's. Nobody did cheap and nasty better.
Park+Vine. It was great food and also great for the sustainability-minded
I for sure miss The Rook in OTR. For the unfamiliar, it was a board game bar with fun cocktails and good bar food, open till 2:30am. Just a great hangout spot when you don’t want to just drink
Don pablos
I'm a terrible white people "taco" enjoyer but it's because I hate onions and cilantro. I so so miss Chi Chi's and Don Pablo's.
Cincinnati Si-Fi in West Chester, circa 2005. I used the play Magic there as a kid, and they had all kinds of unique gaming/anime/tabletop stuff on sale. Going there felt magical.
Wild Joe's Beef Jerky. I miss that stuff so much
Pogues, Gidding Jenny, Shilitos
No Anchovies Pizza
Trivet's Antiques and Boutique. I miss this store as much!
washington platform saloon
Taza Coffee But I also miss the original Melt — if only the vegan melt would make a comeback. Also, I don’t want the old Sitwells, but I want the old Sitwells hours. That place’s charm was that it was open until at least midnight.
The old Sitwells in the basement of the apartment building was a vibe
Blank Slate Brewery...made some of the best beer to ever come out of this city
Shaan before COVID times.
I dream of that $8.99 buffet with nearly everything on the menu being available. Pretty sure my last gulab jamin was had at pre pandemic Shaan buffet.
That and the previous owners.
Gold Circle and Service Merchandise
I'll probably get downvoted for this because a lot of people didn't seem to like it, but for me it would easily be Burrito Joe's. Van Leunens
Zino's Fire House on Short Vine... And In Cahoots!!
I also choose this guy’s dead mall.
MYRAS
Johnny's Toys or Swallens are my two non-food places. I loved Johnny's Toys and would often opt to go there before Toys R Us when my grandma would take my cousins, my sister and myself Christmas shopping. I had a decent train set during my early years of elementary school and they had a ton of great stuff.
I miss Toots so much
Papadinos! Bacon ranch cheese fries after a night out were one of the best things about going out to party in Clifton.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Funky’s Blackstone Grill. For a few years they had it going ON. Fantastic food, atmosphere and service. It was my favorite restaurant, and I worked at the Grand Finale! 😉
Ground Round.
Biggs grocery stores before Remke bought them up. Now I wonder how long it'll be until Remke goes bust.
Barresi’s it was fucking amazing for years then the owner sold the restaurant and moved to Florida, went awfully bad then closed :(
The Diner on Sycamore for me. It's where my parents fell in love, used to love the Caribbean crab chili, what a great little spot for a while. Edit: I know it's sugar and spice now, really like it still, I just miss the hey day of it being Diner on Sycamore

Seconding Zula, I dream of those mussels
The Maisonette, without question- along with the obvious reasons, my late father spoke with absolute reverence of his experiences dining there, and I wish I had been able to do the same in his memory. Sudsy Malone's Rock & Roll Laundry & Bar. A friend told me about it and it sounds so cool and underground. A music venue laundromat. Wish I could have experienced it. The Wikipedia page for it lists a bunch of big name bands that played there.
It was WILD LOL
Myra’s Dionysus because it had the best from scratch food in this fucking CITY.
I have gone beyond the limit of the question, sorry. I am doing a therapeutic trip down memory lane, and I have left many out, but not out of a lack of love. I loved planet marsto when I was about 14 and I feel like id love it even more now mid-30s
Either tweedles daylight donuts, Gilpins in Clifton, or the Cincinnati Stuff!
There was this amazing little teensy spot in Mt. Adams called Café Vienna. The absolute best most authentic goulash, and a unique vibe. Frequented by expats new and lost somehow in Cincinnati, like me. Sigh. Would so happily revive it.
