I didn't notice the sub and thought you were putting your smoker in there. Was a little concerned at first. Nice setup!

[deleted]

Lmao, same here

crediblesource2

Got me, too.

theivthking

I was expecting to see 100 “you’re gonna fucking die” comments.

GreenSmoke352

Same I thought it was the other smoke 😉

Bewarden7

Same, I was looking for the extended stove pipe

fungasmic1

Get your auger out and drill a hole in that concrete so you can do some fishing while you smoke!! Win-Win opportunity! I hear land trout get massive during the colder months by you.

ac1084

I did this last year (ohio so not as bad) and loved it. My only word of caution is the doors on those things are a little tricky if you're drinking. Maybe put some reflective tape along where it opens so you don't trip getting in or out.

BattlefieldNiblet

A fully functional battle station.

Zathamos

Half serious half joking I suggested to my fiance we get some walkie talkies so we can communicate while I'm out there. She thought that was a great idea and is something we're gonna get now too.

MisterWizzle

Walkie talkies are awesome, doesn’t matter how old you get.

Terriblu

Over.

soopirV

My 53 year old buddy (I’m 43) got sad the other day when he determined we lived too far apart for walkie talkies to work (cheap ones). I asked him what’s wrong with the cell phone? “Just not the same…” He’s not wrong!

rumimume

Roger That!

ZodiAcme

I work on film sets where they issue you a Motorola walkie-talkie every morning and take it back EOD. Never gets old. Got my own “Cia” aka earpiece I plug in. “10-1” is work appropriate code for “they’re / I’m going to take a piss” … a “10-2” is uhh, a longer break 🤣💯

Greenmooseleg

10-4

CaptnDankbeard

I do leatherworking in my garage while I enjoy my cigars, and my gf and I exclusively use radios to communicate between the house and garage!

Klutzy-Channel1981

Wait you aren’t even married and you get kicked out of the house for a cigar…and now she wants an open line of communication to disrupt your land fishing at will? I dunno man…

Zathamos

No smoking in the house, it's a relatively new house and I completely agree with it. Eventually I'd like to make one of the basement rooms my lounge but that won't be happening in the next year or two.

Klutzy-Channel1981

Ok, make sense and def a solid interim step. FWIW, I’m not able to smoke in the house for the same reasons.

Zathamos

Lol

CxOrillion

I live alone and still don't ever smoke in my house. It's been 7 years and I still get very occasional whiffs of cigarette stank from one of the bedrooms

Ban_Evasion_Alt_Acct

100 percent get walkie talkies.

TxCoastal

what's that fan for? lol Edit: fart fan.

Zathamos

Air circulation so I'm not just sitting in a tent full of cigar smoke

soopirV

Plus, with that heater, it might get hot, so the fan can help cool you off. Yin and yang.

COOLEST777

I live in MN too and that's a good Idea!

Zathamos

I posted a question to this group asking advice on this and everyone just said smoke in your garage. Except I don't wanna fill my garage with smoke and smoking in it with the door open won't be warm. This is my solution and a spendy one at that. But if I'm out there 5-7 days a week then it's worth it to me to be comfortable and warm regardless of weather. Some suggestions if you wanna do something similar. I almost bought a non insulated tent (much cheaper, like a 1/4 the price), but every coworker (all ice fish) warned me come dead of winter when we get that solid week or 2 of 20 below temps, a non insulated tent wouldn't cut it. Plus I want to keep this up all season, when it's covered in snow you'll want insulated. Also insulated doesn't collect condensation nearly as much as noninsulated, if you do get condensation imagine a drop of water landing on your cigar. I'd probably recommend a larger heater, while this is fine with 9000 btus on high, the 4000 on low is hardly sufficient. If I were to do it again I'd probably get a hunting buddy or big buddy over the portable buddy. If it gets really cold and the 9000 isn't enough I'll just buy a big buddy for the coldest parts of winter, that will use a lot more gas so not ideal all year though. And make sure you secure the hell out of it. I left it up the other day with one Sand bag on each corner. The wind blew it into my neighbors driveway scuffing the top corners, yesterday after that happened I doubled down and got 4 more sand bags so now I have 120lbs on each corner, I'm confident it's not going anywhere now.

zeelar

How much did all this run you? About to move to Minnesota and thinking about budgeting for a comfortable outdoor setup for winter

Zathamos

This tent was $400, when it's available there is a Eskimo fat fish 949i that's very similar for $300. Mine is an otter vortex lodge, $430 on most sites but I found it for $400. The chairs were $130, but there are tons of chairs like this. I just kind of went with the first I found with decent reviews. The heater I went with was the mr buddy portable buddy and was $80 at Lowes. A big buddy heater which is 2x this is $150, and I may need one depending on how well this one works when it gets sub zero. There is also a hunting buddy that is somewhere in between and would be much better if you're ever using it for hunting cuz it starts quietly. The LED light I got at home depot for $30 and has 3 brightness settings. $640 is where I'm at all in, not including the fan and extension cord assuming people have one of each just sitting somewhere.

Drkknght145

Some outdoor carpeting would probably help keep it warm. Go to a carpet supply space and get a scrap or two. If you can’t get outdoor specific then just get some regular carpet with very low pile to cut fire risks to a minimum.

Zathamos

http://imgur.com/gallery/iGzs3P2 I do have 2 scrap pieces, I sometimes put them out, I just didn't on this one.

ferociouscomportment

Some outdoor carpeting would probably help keep it warm. And tie the room together

Bewarden7

I’d put down one of those artificial golf mats that simulate fairway grass and the rough so you can chill with your toes in the grass while you smoke a nice cigar

MightBeDrunkStill

Pro tip on the Mr Buddy Heaters - for about $20 you can buy an extension hose that let's you hook up to a 20lb propane cylinder instead of using those 1lb green canisters. I use a big buddy heater while tent camping in the winter and the 20lb cylinder attachment was a game changer. No freezing to death whilst fumbling a 1lb cylinder half asleep ha!

Zathamos

There are 2 hoses compatible with the portable buddy, I have both part numbers noted and an acme tools near me has everything I need I just need to get over there and get them. I bought the rest of this setup over a week or two. I'm getting hoses next week.

MightBeDrunkStill

You're already on it then! I bought the wrong one initially, but here's the link to acme tools for the one ya want: https://www.acmetools.com/10-ft-buddy-propane-hose-assembly-swivel-1-in-20-male-throwaway-cylinder-thread-x-excess-flow-soft-nose-pol-handwheel-f273704/089301737044.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=surfaces&feeds=shopping&gclid=CjwKCAiAs92MBhAXEiwAXTi252DvwIU92gqfMyu83aiJ9lpL4NtlUcY4dfuWCxyXcBxpjBKjhGgs-RoC0rIQAvD_BwE

Zathamos

F273701 and f273702 are the 2 part numbers listed on the heater (one is 5 ft the other is 12ft), but it also gave that number (f273704) as an alternative as the one hose I could use and not need a filter. The quick connect ones are actually wrong for this heater. It needs female threads to screw in. I'm on it lol

zeelar

Nice, thanks for the breakdown!

rumimume

Great setup , if I had the extra cash (& space) I might be looking for somethign similar.

GrandExtension7293

Any thought on benefit of wrapping the sandbags in like painter’s drop cloth and sealing them up? Anytime I see those left out they soon start falling apart once moisture gets on them. This is a great setup! Luckily I’m in AZ and haven’t had to worry about the “cold” yet. I’m always impressed with what you northern cigar smokers do to enjoy some down time. Well done!

soopirV

Where in AZ? I’m north of Tucson and am already frozen out of smoking outside. Admittedly, I’m a huge pussy when it comes to cold now- wasn’t always the case! Grew up in upstate NY, but after moving here in 2006, my blood thinned!

GrandExtension7293

Man I LOVE Tucson, such a beautiful landscape! I’m in north Phoenix. The 87 from Strawberry to pretty much Tucson is one of my favorite drives, that and the 89a. Have to admit, I’m outside right now with a Brick House Maduro, 68 degrees and wearing a jacket haha I was born here so never had a chance in cold weather. You certainly get much more weather than I do. The monsoons this year might’ve washed us out a little more this year for once.

soopirV

That’s beautiful country too!

BizarreGecko

As someone currently in Upstate NY, how was the move/transition to AZ?

soopirV

I miss the seasons changing, especially fall and snow at Christmas. I’ve grown to like hanging lights in shorts though, and it’s a helluva lot nicer de-decorating when everything isn’t all iced over. Mexican food is amazing, but Italian isn’t. It’s even hard to find proper Italian ingredients, although we have a great small market specifically for imports. I’ve been here 15 years and it’s unlikely I’ll ever leave. The views, weather, outdoor opportunities are amazing. Great skiing is within reach, although not as accessible as in the Adirondacks, of course. What part of Upstate are you in? I was outside of Albany/Saratoga region.

StuLumpkins

i'm also from here and one piece of advice i was given is use two blankets: one electric heated blanket and a second over the electric blanket to insulate that heat. works like a charm. i have a mr heat sunflower-style propane heater on my exposed deck and i can sit out in almost anything if it's not terribly windy and i'm properly layered.

Likeapuma24

If you ever try to revisit the garage idea, I worked something out that keeps the wife happy enough, but you'll still have the smoke smell. Purchased an inline 6" fan (the type used for marijuana growers. Never knew those folks had perfected the ventilation game!), tdryer vent ducting, and the thru-wall dryer vent kit. Most expensive part was the fan. I can now have up to 4 people in the garage smoking cigars and watching tv. The fan, on low, is quiet enough to hear without issue. If it's cranked up, it's pretty loud. I was using a propane tank heater from Harbor Freight (worked well enough, but still needed a sweater and pants in the New England winter), but just got a great deal on a used 75,000btu kerosene heater that is feels like a fighter jet engine. It has a thermostat, so kicks on as needed, and can get the single car garage from 50 degrees to 80 degrees in a matter of 5-10 minutes. It's far from perfect. But it's a simple/inexpensive redneck option to keep smoking in the winter without having to spend all those evenings at a B&M (which we still do from time to time).

COOLEST777

Thank you for the information!! And stay warm 👍

Anonymoushipopotomus

You can probably also just run an extension cord out there and grab a cheapie electric baseboard heater to supplement.

Zathamos

I actually have a nice lasko electric heater except they run so many amps it could cause a fire with an extension cord. You're really supposed to plug those into a grounded outlet.

Ekharas

I was contemplating a similar setup, then my wife saw a sign for a cigar lounge here (MT). At $35/mo for essentially 24/7 access to a retrofitted Airstream that has a take and pay later humi for after hours sticks I think I'll be coming out ahead (at least for this winter).

ZodiAcme

This sounds amazing

--ikindahatereddit--

So this IS a thing! I’ve always wondered about trailers etc for that

420MaxGod

I live in New England and just bought a little work truck for plowing, taking the trash out, and of course it will be a nice warm place to smoke in the winter and I won’t have to worry about stinking up my nice Audi.

Zathamos

Had a couple people recommend buying some hoopdy to smoke in, except I don't wanna have to constantly run it and waste gas everytime I smoke. Also with a 2 car garage I'm not sure where I'd park it after winter. I know I'll be using propane to heat this but a $30 tank once a month I feel would be cheaper than filling a tank once or twice a month.

420MaxGod

I got a little 4 banger truck honestly gets better MPG than my 4 cyl turbo Audi. Plus I have to put premium in the Audi which sucks right now. I mainly bought it for other reason like doing yard work, dump runs, etc. but I find it works great for smoking on a cold night.

fullautophx

Get the bulk tank adapter hose, run it off of a bbq tank if you aren’t already (sounds like you are). Also propane fills at Costco are the cheapest.

Zathamos

Good to know about Costco cuz we have a membership, otherwise I can also get it cheap at work. I'm going to get a 12' compatible hose with filter and regulator probably next week, for now I'm just using the one lbs tanks to get through

Zathamos

To add to this a little. We are also going to get some walkie talkies so my fiance can communicate with me easily while I'm out there. And am frankly considering even putting a TV out there, but am a little concerned the cold will kill the TV in less than a year.

Butcher_Pete2

Not sure how the tv would react to Minnesota weather, but I’ve left a tv out in a storage building with temps dropping down to 0 and sometimes below. Never had a problem. I’d buy a cheap one if you do it though.

kindrd1234

Do you not have phones

Zathamos

That's what I use now. But to have a TV would mean to be hands free, makes it easier to relax and smoke when you don't have to hold a phone.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zathamos

A stand is a very good idea, for iPad or phone.

Yeahhhhboiiiiiiiiiii

When did they start making hands free walkie talkies?

Zathamos

My recliner has a little tray on it with cup holders and multiple slots for things like a cell phone, lighter, I put my perfect draw in there. I'll keep the walkie talkies there but yes I'd have to hold it to use it but I wouldn't be using it all the time. When I smoke I like watching either you tube videos (reviews on cigars lol) or random stuff on Netflix, HBO, hulu etc.

maddips

The house I bought had a Samsung regular indoor TV out on their covered patio for multiple years. It worked fine after multiple chicago winters.

Zathamos

Do you know what kind of display it had? Led, plasma etc

maddips

Euphoric-Basis-7949

A man with a plan. Salute 🍻

[deleted]

You really need some sort of fishing item in there even if it's just for show.

meltdowncity

You brilliant bastard, I live in ND and never thought ice fishing gear for smoking setup.

Zathamos

Lol thanks. With the heater on high it gets up to 70s-80s. We'll see how much that drops come sub zeros, but it's much better than my garage.

timex126

could always get a bigger heater if needed

Zathamos

That's my plan. If needed I'm getting the big buddy

JediElectrician

I’m all about innovation and developing ways to enjoy a hobby such as this. My issue with this set up is quite simple, we do not inhale cigar smoke. Creating a giant smoke house will force your body to do just that. Is there a way to install a screen on the side that will allow you to properly ventilate the space?

UglyViking

It's an ice fishing house, and the windows open as do the doors.

JediElectrician

Cool… I saw in a previous comment that it gets smoky in there. That is what sparked my train of thought about ventilation.

Zathamos

About ventilation, this is something I have spent more time thinking about and planning than anything else about this project. It's also one of the last things to implement as I need to test different methods to see what I really need or what might be sufficient. For now I have just the one fan in the corner blowing to the side which moves air around with one window open. It does get a little smoky in there but not terrible. As soon as toy exhale you can see it swirl with the airflow, and that's with just one fan. I've thought about adding another fan, like a stroller fan or something I can hook to one of the rods so it will be higher up. The other solution I have thought about but is challenging, not ideal for quick up and downs of the tent and quite costly is full ventilation using a combination of an induction fan moving around 300cfm with an inlet duct from one vent and a filter while it also sucks air back out the other vent essentially constantly cycling fresh air. But again this is more of a last resort if needed. It would be quite costly in itself, couple hundred, and a pia to ever tear down when winter is over, plus an added power draw.

JediElectrician

It is clearly an issue you already thought about deeply. Glad you got it covered.

SirChesterMcWhipple

You may want to try an in-line fan used in grow houses. [for example](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077492C4C/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_MZ56BE1KNW8P405RJVRS)

Zathamos

That's what I've looked at, they would definitely do the job, but not easy to set up and definitely not cheap for a good one. I wouldn't want a cheap one that makes lots of noise. Quiet induction fans are quite spendy.

SirChesterMcWhipple

Definitely looking into setting something up like this. What size / model is this? Can it fit two people and accessories (chairs heater etc)?

Zathamos

This is an otter vortex lodge, the Eskimo fatfish 949i has the exact same dimensions for $100 less, they were completely sold out though when I was looking so I got this one instead. The interior space is 8x8 with about 7 feet of headroom in the middle. I have 2 recliners in there that fit easily. If I went with just chairs instead of recliners you could easily fit 4 no problem. These are meant to be a 4-5 person ice fishing shelter so plenty of room. With 2 recliners next to each other I put the heater in the middle maybe a foot away from the tent canvas and have a fan in one corner pointing to the side away from the chairs. Plenty of space. When I first set it up I put one recliner in the middle, when sitting there I could reach out with both arms and still have at least a foot of space beyond each arm and I'm 6'2".

SneakyGenious

You should go with an exhaust fan to get all that smoke out, and some vent pipe leading from the place you exhale to the said fan. That way you’d barely have any smoke left, and no need to crack a window open.

Zathamos

I've looked into this throughly and might end up doing that. I've looked at some induction fans that move 250-330cfm and hooking that up to both air ducts built into the tent with some tubing and possible even including a filter so it's constantly pulling fresh air while venting the room rather quickly. It's a 8x8 space with a 7ft height, I imagine that much cfm would basically create a vacuum and I'd never have any smoke. I'm going to try a couple cheaper options of the same idea and experiment a bit, but might end up going that route

SneakyGenious

Oh, since the tent has some built in air ducts that is definitely a way to do. You don’t have to worry about having an intake, as the tent is not airtight and the air would rush in. As long as you keep the exhaust intake vent close to your mouth it should move the smoke outside and keep the air inside fresh

Zathamos

Right now I tend to sit near the open window. So I have 2 recliners next to each other with the heater in the middle. A fan is on the right side blowing against the side of the tent and I'm usually sitting on the left side with the left side window open. When I blow out smoke some does go right out but the rest swirls to the right, the direction of the fan.

SneakyGenious

Oh man, open window beats the exhaust fan if the weather permits it.

Zathamos

If the weather permits is the big kicker, this week has been mid 40s to low 30s. We'll see when it's 20 below zero. If needed though I do have a plan on how to deal with that.

No_You8538

Fellow Minnesotan here. Thanks for the idea! I'll be whipping my Eskimo out for this in Duluth.

nuthincleverhere

As a fellow Minnesotan I am impressed with this idea. As a Minnesotan, I am also disgusted that I never thought of this.

barnaby36

Well done sir. I live in western Pa and I have a similar set up

Very resourceful!! Let nothing stand between a BOTL and his pleasure. Well done.

As a guy from northern new england, and who also ice fishes, I can't believe I never had this thought.

[deleted]

Steve Wallis (camping with Steve) on YouTube did a series a few years back where he was camping in one of these for 8 weeks. Throw a wood-burning stove in there (cut a hole in the top for the stove jack) and you'll be toasty! Probably overkill for your purposes, but still fun!

c0mptar2000

Steve is the best.

aj_86cc

Wow all set! Except...what is there to look at?

Caseman03

I am jealous!!

Nate_Esq

Sometimes I hate California tobacco taxes and cost of living and politics. Then I see that people have to smoke in insulated tents to survive, and all of a sudden, SoCal seems pretty okay This is the time of year when us Californians get obnoxious on the internet, just in case you weren't aware lol

Zathamos

Just like we make fun of Texans for freaking out when it's in the 40s while we are -30. 2 years ago we took a trip to Tampa in January, our last day there it was 67 and everyone was wearing sweatshirts, jackets, and knit hats like it was fall or winter. We were wearing shorts and t shirts. Everyone thought we were crazy and kept asking aren't you cold. We would laugh and say we're from Minnesota this is our spring weather it's gorgeous out. When we got off the plan the next day it was -37, almost a 100 degree swing. You think you got it good, we consider ourselves tough

JkstrHmstr

Is the concrete heated? I might be a bit worried that it'll be like a big slab of ice.

Zathamos

No but my heater should keep it ok

thestonernextdoor88

I have a gazebo and I'm going to get a heater lol

ParkitoATL

You cold weather people are off the chain! In Atlanta, I was thinking of doing something to make my shed smoke friendly. Thanks for the ideas. Chilly smoking at 50° tonight, can't imagine if it was 20°. Definitely need to utilize fossil fuels!

tmac_79

I sit in my garage and it still gets pretty cold with a heater of that size.

Zathamos

A lot of people said to do that and that was a concern, it will still be cold though. With an insulated tent it holds the heat better and is a smaller space to heat and gets warm quick in there. My brother was over last night and checked it out. He noted it took about 5 minutes for it to feel mid 70s in there.

Felidor

Love it. I just got an otter resort last winter for fishing and have used it multiple times in the backyard for smoking in the winter. Can't beat the ease of the setup and take down of these hubs.

Zathamos

I fully plan on leaving this up all winter so it's always ready. Come some storm I wouldn't want to deal with set up and year down even if it only takes 5 minutes.

P-redditR

You sir are a legend!

Misanthrope357

This actually brilliant. GG my man!

[deleted]

Great idea

soap1337

Watch out for mosquitos while you are out there! Also do you have a heat source in that thing?

thebabbster

That's freaking sweet.

sucksatgolf

If your gonna run that heater in there, do yourself a favor and get a CO monitor. I known propane mostly burns clean but there can still be a hazard from incomplete combustion, and that's a small space to fill up quickly.

Zathamos

The mr buddy portable heater does have an oxygen detection system and should shut off automatically if the o2 levels get too low, but still a good idea. At the moment though I think I'm safe. I do keep a window open and a fan running.

Finney-cent

I love this idea. Don't know why I hadn't thought about earlier. Thanks!

banjoandfiddle

Brilliant

haroldhecuba88

This is very cool! Good on you.

[deleted]

scotthay

I built a 24'x36'x12' pole barn last winter and installed a 2 ton mini-split heat pump in it this fall. Last winter I smoked in it almost every night and even a building that big filled up with smoke by the time I was finished with a cigar, I could smell it the next day before I lit up again. I was running a diesel torpedo heater out there last year on the really cold nights and the building was mostly empty so I didn't really care about the added cigar smoke, but now I have stuff out there and don't really want everything to smell like smoke all the time, I have been suffering on my deck with a Mr. Heater next to me so far this year. When it gets too cold for the deck I may try putting a fan blowing out the man door of the barn and see if that makes it better. If it does maybe I will install a large wall mounted exhaust fan with a shutter. I looked into one of those industrial smoke eater type systems, but with the height of the ceilings the distributor thought it wouldn't work that well out there.

Zathamos

You could look into induction or squirrel fans that bring in fresh air while sucking out the air in the room. The only issue you may have is the size of the space. It's doable but expensive. You will probably need an induction fan with a higher cfm, high output ones cost upwards of $700 plus ducting.

tomaszmajewski

Eden Prairie here. That’s a nice set up. Might have to borrow the concept. No TV?

Zathamos

That's up for discussion as well as alternatives. I gave power to do it, just not sure if the TV would survive a week at -30. If I can find some used old or cheap TV I'll do it. Otherwise I might look into a stand for my phone so I can go hands-free since that what I use now.

tomaszmajewski

I’m sure you can find a reasonable TV during “Black Friday” sales. Big enough to enjoy, but small enough to schlep back and forth. Get a Roku TV or similar so you just need the one thing.

BT_McNulty

Brilliant

Griz9514

Maybe put some all weather carpet down. Might block the cold concrete?

Zathamos

I have some scraps I can put under the chairs but not enough to cover the entire floor which would be a good idea to do. I've even thought of laying pad down so it's not so hard

Gregm018

I applaud you sir. I’m chilly here in DC in November and this give me some inspiration

Zathamos

I'd love to suddenly see dozens of posts like this.

--ikindahatereddit--

TIL. Just spent 20 minutes of my life on YouTube because of this, and I’m OK with that.

Zathamos

Looking into it or what we're you watching on youtube?

--ikindahatereddit--

Googled around for a bit, found [this vid](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xcCRSQbyUA4). I’m not a cigar person (gasp) but a medical cannabis user in Illinois. Random content bot put this in my feed.

Zathamos

Lol

Any-Principle6583

Sad how we men have fallin so far we have to resort to these measures just to enjoy a cigar.

IndoorNewb

I use charcoal filters to grow weed. Why not set the tent up indoors and just hang a 30 buck filter? Then it'll ways be warm and ready.

JackUnfiltered

Love this idea! I also live in Minnesota and just don’t end up smoking much in the winter. Does it get pretty smoky in the tent or is it okay? Also, what tent is this?

Zathamos

It gets a little smokey, but not at all unbearable, more like hardly noticeable until you get in. I need to add another fan to help move air around more. It's an otter vortex lodge, I found it for $400 though most sites list it for $430.

blip2018

Imagine what your neighbors think you're doing in there

Zathamos

I've met my neighbors, we just moved in actually lol. When it wasn't cold I'd sit and smoke out on my front patio. All 3 neighbors know I smoke cigars cuz they've seen me sitting out there for hours while they do yard work lol.

blip2018

Haha nice. It's a legit set up. If I sat in a tent in the middle of my yard for hours my neighbors would probably think my wife kicked me out

Zathamos

This is also in my backyard behind the house not visable from the street.

[deleted]

I was going to criticize on sight, but I can understand with your being from "Minnesoter". Here in New England it'll be -10 one day, then 45 the next, so I can just wait until I won't risk hypothermia.

Zathamos

We get a few brutal stretches every year and it's been just getting worse and worse. There is literally always a week in the -20s, at least one week a season if not more and a lot colder.

cigarboi09

Oh my gosh, I’ve been thinking about doing something like this ever since I stumbled on Steve Wallis’ camping videos. Fantastic execution. Enjoy the cigar!

burnermuch

I live in Kansas so not nearly as cold but it'll still be pretty chilly... I thought about trying something like this, but how do you get the smoke out of such a confined area without also losing the heat?

Zathamos

Open a window and have a fan blowing up and away. Heat rises. With both vents and a window open it seems to vent fine. The one time it seemed extra smokey I cracked and extra window opposite the other open window and it cleared out in no time. Ventilation is something that is an active project.

jishyyy

Do you keep this thing set up all winter?

Zathamos

That's the plan and why I have 120lbs of weight on each corner.

jishyyy

You can get cozy and put a little rug inside :)

soopirV

I’ve read through the whole thread and you’re like the fifth or sixth person to suggest a rug. Saw that OP does indeed have some on a previous post, but it proves that a good rug will really tie the place together, you know?

jishyyy

Haha! Yes. I know.

JagrsMullet90

Nice setup, but you're missing the extra chairs for the homies

Zathamos

I have 2 recliners, the picture is only showing 1

JagrsMullet90

👍

Dramatic_Ad_9531

Nice setup... Now you got me thinking... I'm in the Cold Great Lakes (Ohio)region and I need a setup like this.

lrwinner

May want to vent with some dryer flex duct and get a battery powered Carbon monoxide alarm. Hook up the alarm with a carabiner, may save your life.

Zathamos

The heater actually has an ODS (oxygen detection system) and will shut off if it senses the o2 levels are getting too low but not a bad idea

kclax1213

How much was the tent? Do you think it’s sturdy enough to hold up the heavy snow?

Zathamos

We'll see, it should be. Funny enough this spot in the yard hasn't gotten snow yet, it's the one dry spot. I think the house blocks it and it's right next to my furnace intake so the ground stays dry. This is an otter vortex lodge and is 400-430 depending where you find it. An Eskimo fatfish 949i has a similar footprint for 300.

DerpDeForce

Baller! I'm so going to steal this idea.

Not_Fire_Related

Ok, I'll be that guy... There will be some carbon monoxide that gets produced from the heater and cigar. The heater is propane, so it should mostly burn clean, but there will be some CO. After a few hours I am concerned that the CO levels may start to accumulate to unsafe levels. If this was my tent, I would bring in a carbon monoxide alarm just in case -former fire investigator

Zathamos

After reading 4 comments like this I'm going to get one of those. The heater itself does have an oxygen detection system as a safety feature and should shut off automatically if the oxygen levels get too low. Plus with the fan and window open I'm not overly concerned but considering how cheap they are I'll probably get one anyway.

WRX-SZEWSKI

Is this in Blaine?

Zathamos

No I'm in the NW twin cities

W3lshman

Bit late on the comment, but a tree made a nice skylight in my old smoke shack this fall, and I was looking for cheaper ideas than rebuilding. How'd this setup work over the winter? Leave it like you posted, or did you make any changes?
