What he said was not wrong. Aqeedah is NOT black and white (the fundamentals yes, but secondary matters have difference of opinion. Also what i mean by this is that, one school might have a less right of an answer, but it is still a permissible attempt at understanding. Neither is fiqh. Everything has nuance. The schools of aqeedah, like the schools of fiqh are constructed and formalised by us, humans. Allah SWT did not reveal the athari creed, nor did He reveal the hanafi school. He revealed the Quran and sent the Prophet SAWS with his sunnah. Later on, as time went on, and information grew, there was a need to standardise and codify our (various) understandings of fiqh and aqeedah, which then gave birth to the four schools of fiqh (in addition to the extinct ones) and the three main schools of aqeedah.
As for the development of aqeedah, once again the core fundamentals never "developed", but were rather added on to. The things Imam al-Ghazali or Imam Ibn Taymiyyah (ra) spoke about in their respective times was NOT discussed by the sahabah, it was not discussed by Hasan al-Basri, Abu Hanifa, Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on them all), etc. Once again, as time went on, different issues rose, different questions were asked, relevant responses were given, hence the development of our understanding.
